117. The Life of Leasure and Murder: Bill Leasure Mar 31, 2021

Show notes

Police were trying to bust a ring of thieves who were stealing yachts and then selling them. The detectives had received information that a yacht by the name of La Vita was stolen and was going to be docking nearby at Marina Bay Yacht Harbor in Richmond, just north of San Francisco.
Detectives were waiting for this yacht to pull in and when it did, they wanted to have a little chat with the crew, in particular, a man by the name of Robert Denzil Kuns who they believed was involved in this. As the yacht pulled in, a man jumped out to tie up the boat. He was not Robert Kuns but another man by the name of William Leasure, an LAPD officer. Detectives were shocked to find one of their very on board but this was just the beginning of the end for Officer William Leasure in a shocking tale with a few surprises.

115. Killing A Lie: Bart Whitaker Mar 17, 2021

Show notes

Ethan wrote us another great script! Thank you, Ethan!
The Whitakers were a perfect family. They were well known in the affluent city of Sugar Land Texas. But things aren't always what they seem. On the evening of Dec. 10, 2003, the family of four were gunned down as they returned home from a celebratory dinner. Mom, Tricia Whitaker, a retired teacher, and her youngest son 19-year-old, Kevin, died from their injuries. The dad, Kent, and oldest son Bart survived.
Originally, police thought the Whitakers had interrupted a burglar but what they uncovered was a conspiracy to commit murder.

114. The Drug Addict, the Porn Star and the Heiress: Pati Margello Murder Mar 10, 2021

Show notes

Today we are beginning our case at the Del Mar Resort Hotel in Las Vegas and it is far from a resort. It is the kind of hotel that rents by the hour and adult movies are included in your room rental. The hotel has the usual cast of seedy characters that you expect on rotation. The Del Mar is no stranger to despair and darkness so on August 5, 1998, when a couple checks into the hotel and reports to the front desk that there is a putrid smell coming from the air conditioner, it is not out of the ordinary that someone may have died in the neighboring room. What was out of the ordinary was that the body was located inside the air conditioning vent making this not only a murder but the dead woman is at the center of what would become yet another huge scandal involving one of the richest American families ever to grace the East Coast.

113. The Fake Doctor: Dean Faiello Mar 03, 2021

Show notes

It is Monday, April 14 2003 when co-workers of Maria Cruz become concerned. 35-year-old Maria was always a dependable, conscious employee who would just not show up for work. A few of her employee friends decide to swing by her apartment to check on her. They arrive at her home where they are greeted by a stack of newspapers on her front door. They knock on the door and no one answers it. Clearly, Maria is not home and has been gone for longer than just a day or two but they are sure she would have told them if she were planning a trip. One of her friends contacts her uncle who lives in nearby Queens and he immediately calls the police to report her missing and file a missing person’s report on Maria. What happened to Maria Cruz?

111. Binding Love: Brittany Kilgore Feb 17, 2021

Show notes

A 9-1-1 call comes in from a woman who is speaking in a muffled voice barely understandable. The operator is able to understand that someone is hurt at a hotel in the town of Fallbrook which is located in the northern part of San Diego county. After the operator calms the caller down, he is able to get an address, and police are dispatched to the location. When officers arrive and knock on the door, they can hear noises coming from inside the room but are unable to make out just what is making the noise. The manager uses his key to get officers inside. Inside they find a woman on the ground and blood everywhere. The woman barely has clothes on but there are obvious signs of injury. As officers look around the room, they notice a spiked collar near her body. In the bathroom, there is an array of knives and scalpels. They also notice a letter that informs them of yet another body. What officers are about to discover is a twisted, dark tale that seems like the plot of a bad mystery novel.

110. The Pig Farmer: Robert Pickton Feb 06, 2021

Show notes

Before you listen to this particular episode, I wanted to mention that the perpetrator in the case targeted sex workers many of whom were indigenous women struggling with addiction and/or mental health issues. According to www.statista.com, in 2018, the rate of homicide victims among women in Canada was more than six times higher for the indigenous population. Often, victims of violent crimes, Indigenous people are twice as likely to suffer a physical assault, and three times as likely to become victims of robbery and sexual assault compared to their non-indigenous counterparts. If you would like to find out more about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, please visit.amnesty.ca or kairoscandada.org.
Robert William Pickton was a Canadian farmer who, along with his brother, would run the farming business after his parents passed away. The men had some success with the farming but Robert's greatest legacy had nothing to do with farming. This is a grotesque story about a man who would ultimately be responsible for a series of missing women and the horror they must have endured.

109. Honor Thy Father or Die: Eddie Sexton Jan 27, 2021

Show notes

Eddie Sexton was an ordained minister so all those in town knew him and he was the go-to guy who could marry you and fast with little fuss. Eddie and his wife, Estella May had 12 children in all, seven boys and five girls. From the outside, this large church-going family seemed to be an ideal family but we all know looks can be deceiving and in this case, twisted and deadly. This is a story about a father who ruled with an iron fist by instilling fear, among other things, to get exactly what he wanted. After all, he always got what he wanted because if he didn't there would be hell to pay.

108. Albert Fentress: New York's Own Hannibal Lector Jan 20, 2021

Show notes

On August 20th, 1979 civil lawyer Wallace Schwartz gets a phone call at 2:12 AM When he answers he hears his friend, 38-year-old Albert Fentress, in a low emotionless tone, say he is going to kill himself because he did something awful, something unthinkable. The story that Albert would tell his friend Wallace would be a tale of cannibalization, mutilation, and murder involving a teenager. The man who committed this heinous crime would become the darling of prison officials but the question remains: Did Albert lose touch with reality that summer afternoon or did Albert know exactly what he did and how to get away with it?
