130: The History of Alien Abductions, Part 4: Obscure 70s Abductions with Cole Herrold Dec 05, 2022
    Show notes

Abductions in the 1970s are characterized by cases that gained a level of popularity on their individual merits. The Pascagoula Abduction for instance was a media sensation that occurred during a very prominent UFO/humanoid flap. It’s also the first year that a handful of abduction cases were reported. Interestingly, they all occurred within 10 days of each other.

In 1974, The Carl Higdon abduction captured the attention of national headlines, and one year later, the Travis Walton case captured widespread press attention, primarily because it was a missing person’s/murder case before it became an alien abduction. In 1975, 25 abduction cases were reported, setting a new record for the most reported in a year. Aside from the publicity of the Walton case, it’s believed that the premiere of The UFO Incident, starring James Earl Jones and Estelle Parsons, depicting the abduction of Betty Barney brought forth many experiencers, including Patty Roach, who experienced an abduction with her family in 1973. The abduction experiences of Brian Scott became known due to the film's release as well.

Other abduction cases would come to the forefront in the 70s, such as the cases of Lee Parish, and the Stanford Three. All of these cases that I have mentioned we have covered on the podcast before, so it only makes sense to bring the most obscure cases to the table.

Researcher Cole Herrold (New World Explorers Society) joins me discuss some of the strangest cases you've never heard before.

    129: An Interview with Mark O'Connell Nov 28, 2022
    Show notes

Way back on episode three of this podcast, we featured our first of only two UFO Book Clubs, dedicated to The Close Encounters Man: How One Man Made The World Believe in UFOs by Mark O'Connell. O'Connell's biography of J Allen Hynek presented a man on two fronts, a scientists and a UFO investigator who had some really interesting spiritual beliefs. We released that episode way back in 2018, so it only felt natural to have Mark himself on four years later. (Better late than never, right?)

In all seriousness, it was an honor to have Mark on to talk about for Star Trek, the process of researching The Close Encounters Man, meeting Jennie Zeidman and getting her on camera for the show UFO Witness, and to talk about his podcast, Far-Fetched.

128: The History of Alien Abductions, Part 3: Harrison Bailey and the Black Contact Experience with Professor WHAM Nov 21, 2022
    Show notes

    CW: Racism

When it comes to the alien contact experience, and the cases that we've come to revere, we often forget that there are voices excluded from the conversation. The alien abduction phenomenon more often than not seems like a purely American phenomenon, dominated by white voices. I do not say this to diminish anyone's experience, but to lift up others.

This episode about the question of who we deem worthy of contact and the experiences of black people that are often overlooked. Professor WHAM joins the pod to discuss the story of Harrison Bailey, one of the earliest abductees, and who suffered negative health affects as a result of his encounter. We also discuss the black contact experience and other cultures that seem excluded from the conversation.

    Show notes

First and foremost, I can't thank you all enough for the overwhelming support for our first episode. It means the world. On this week's episode Rich Hatem is back and he brings the story of Albert Coe along. Published in 1969, at a time when contactee tales were becoming fewer and far between, The Shocking Truth! tells the story of Coe's encounter with a human looking alien while out hunting. For my part, I bring you the story of Herbert Schirmer and his abduction on December 3, 1967.

126: The History of Alien Abductions, Part 1: 1957-1969 with Rich Hatem Nov 07, 2022
    Show notes

This episode marks the beginning of a L O N G series about the history of the alien abduction phenomenon.

Our premise, in part, can be summarized by Thomas Bullard, “UFO abductions in the strict sense of the term usually include a visible UFO and require involuntary capture or coercion to get witnesses on board. Once they are inside the crew examines them and turns them out after about two hours, and during that time the witnesses usually suffer some impairment of memory, consciousness or ability to act. Failure to remember the encounter often persists long after the abduction is over. The earliest case of this general description occurred as early as 1929 (see Table I-1) and a few others date prior to 1947, but abductions begin to roll only in 1949. A low incidence persists until 1967, but the high rate of that year did not survive the decline in UFO activity or interest current around 1970. The number leaps to new highs during the flap year of 1973 and this time the level holds, with 1979 topping the chart with two dozen cases. A drop-off in the 1980s may follow the general decline in UFO activity during this decade, but delays in reporting, investigation and publication may be responsible. Time will tell whether the poor turnout applies to actual abductions or abduction reports.

“At this point a word of caution is necessary: Many witnesses claim abductions back into the 1940s and 1950s, but a glance at the upper half of Table I-1 shows that no one reported an abduction before 1957. Abductions as a matter of record are 20 years old at best (for the listener, this volume was published in 1987), and most only half that age with 1980 being the peak year with 42 reports.”

With Rich Hatem along for the ride we dive into the earliest modern abduction case in print, the accounts that The Interrupted Journey brought out, the stories of Flora Evans and Gerry Irwin, and strange cases of spontaneous teleportation.

At the end of this week's episode I referenced a webcomic that I've been working on with past guest and all around good dude, Todd Purse, called Welcome UFO People. Well, we decided to get together and talk about it. On this bonus episode we talked about the comic that inspired us to do the series, the comics that we love, giving new life to old UFO/alien encounter cases, and the witness sketches that inspire us.

124: I Lived in a Nest of UFOs with Willow Truman Oct 24, 2022
    Show notes

Page space within UFO journals of the 50s, 60s, and 70s was dedicated to solely to the seasoned investigator, debuting important cases that we quote endlessly today, for the first time; the established theorist theorizing about the true nature of UFO entities, and other topics.

Aside from listener feedback in select journals, those pages were almost never offered to the witness themselves to tell their own stories. That fact alone makes the story of Bernice Niblett unique. In Volume 2, Number 5 of Canadian UFO Report they dedicated a significant amount of space to Bernice and the experiences she had living in "a saucer nest" during the Winter of 1968.

    123: The Summer of Sasquatch '72 Oct 17, 2022
    Show notes

The 1970s produced a distinct flavor of Sasquatch, one that could be found in nationwide headlines in states like Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Often these sightings would be accompanied by other anomalous events, like UFOs, strange voices, and odd smells.

1972 was a year riddled with both. In a commentary for the North American Newspaper Alliance, Keel wrote “Hairy Monsters Eclipse Comeback By UFOs.”

“After a three year ‘lull’ with comparatively few flying saucers being reported, the little green men attempted a comeback this year.

“But a seven-foot hairy monster with a serious perspiration problem walked away with most of the publicity.”

On this episode we look deep into "The Missouri Monster" or Momo encounters that took place in Louisiana, Missouri. The Summer of 72 was an active time for Bigfoots, as a series of other infamous encounters took place in Indiana and Pennsylvania that year, making it the true Summer of the Squatch!

122: The Anomalous Bigfoot with Jordan Heath Oct 10, 2022
    Show notes

When it comes to the big hairy guy in the woods, most people are of the mind that Bigfoot is a salt of the earth creature, feet firmly planted on the ground. Well, on this episode, we talk about the Bigfoot that may have hitched a ride on a UFO.

For decades, hairy creatures have been associated with the UFO phenomenon. In 1954, Venezuela was besieged by short, stocky creatures, with glowing yellow eyes. This particular hairy humanoid was particularly aggressive, scratching many witnesses. The link between the two phenomena would become stronger in the early 70s after a series of sightings in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

On this episode Jordan Heath from Campfire: Tales of the Strange and Unsettling stops by to talk about Bigfoots that are able to disable cars with its hair, a strange case from 1912, and the strange case of George Kowalczyk, who may have been possessed by a Bigfoot?
