140: 1967, The Year Canada Was Invaded Without Knowing Feb 13, 2023
    Show notes

1967 was a unique year for Canada. While the United States was embroiled in its own flap that saw the Ohio Valley play host to a myriad of strange activity, the Men in Black run amuck on UFO witnesses, and the government shunt off its UFO program to the University of Colorado, Canada’s flap was a quiet affair… but a predicted one.

“In the spring of 1967 the late Dr. Olavo T. Fontes of Rio de Janeiro, an intensely interested student of the UFO mystery, predicted the fall of that year would record more UFO sightings than any period in the 20-year history of the phenomena.

“Asked on what basis he made this prediction, he explained that he and other researchers had noticed that UFO waves occurred every 26 months. In addition he had made the personal observation there was a peak period every five years, and according to his calculations the two cycles would merge late in 1967.

“Some weeks later when Dr. Fontes was visited by Jim and Coral Lorensen of the Aerial Phenomenon Research Organization, the three of them discussed his forecast and tried to select the areas where activity would be most pronounced. Because Canada and England always had their share of visits, but so far not in any unusual number, they picked these two countries as the probable areas of most noticeable activity.”

Canadian UFO Report dubbed 1967 “the year we were invaded without knowing it.” In this episode we will explore the UFO activity that occurred in 1967, beyond the big two cases, The Falcon Lake Incident and the Shag Harbour Incident, to the corners of the country where the UFOs took an interest.

139: The Robertson Panel & James E McDonald with Sequoyah Kennedy Feb 06, 2023
    Show notes

We're taking a bit of a break from our abduction series, and this week, Sequoyah Kennedy from The Nonsense Bazaarjoins me to talk a little shit about the C.I.A.

In 1952, the new Project Blue Book was riding high. With Captain Edward Ruppelt at the helm, the project was now taking UFOs seriously... but for a limited time. Before long, the project was hampered by press leaks and understaffing, but its open mindedness to the UFO subject never waned.

That would all change over the course of two successive weekends in July of 1952 when UFOs would appear over Washington D.C. and cause a massive uproar in the press. An uproar that Blue Book was not prepared to handle. President Truman wanted answers quickly and asked the C.I.A. to step in. Leading to the infamous Robertson Panel, the C.I.A. would set the course of Blue Book's investigations in the following years.

All of this was a secret until the report was discovered by the unsung hero of the ufological world, Dr. James E. McDonald.

    Show notes

This week, we begin a three part series on one of the most important figures in alien abduction lore, Whitley Strieber. Through a singular image on a book called Communion, Strieber captured the uncanny valley of many readers and introduced the aliens that we know as the greys.

On this episode we explore the contents of Communion, mainly Whitley's main experiences of October 4 and December 26, 1985, and all of his other strange experiences contained within the book's pages.

Special thanks to Jeff Demers for researching and writing this episode!

134: The History of Alien Abductions, Part 6: Budd Hopkins, David Jacobs and the Shaping of a Phenomenon Jan 02, 2023
    Show notes

    CW: Sexual abuse

When it comes to the alien abduction phenomenon, no two figures have played a greater roll in its shaping than Budd Hopkins and David Jacobs. And shaping, I think, is the perfect word, because, as we’ve covered on this series, before this point, abductions were very different animals. It was through Hopkins that it became an intergenerational phenomenon, that its captors all looked the same with slight variations, and that those captors were lying, deceiving assholes with an agenda that could be gleaned through hypnosis. Alien-human hybrids dominated the field because of Budd Hopkins. In short, the phenomenon that you know as alien abductions is the product of Budd Hopkins’ research, and the proliferation of that research from other figures, like David Jacobs.

In an interview with Ed Conroy, for his book Report on Communion, Whitley Strieber had this to say about Hopkins and Jacobs: "'He and Jacobs are censoring the experiences of people with visitor experiences in order to fit them into a theory they have about extraterrestrials,' Strieber told me in a December 1988 interview. 'If some of the experiences in people's lives don't fit with their theories, they just exclude them. In my books, I have maintained an account of the experiences which is very close to how strange and bizarre they really are. That is why my books have gotten such a tremendous response, while Intruders was a failure.'"

On this episode I dive into the work of these two figures, and expose the flaws and abuses that is contained within.

133: The History of Alien Abductions, Part 5: The Andreasson Affair with Stephanie Quick Dec 26, 2022
    Show notes

Eight years before Whitley Strieber's Communion was published, The Andreasson Affair hit the shelves and challenged the notion of what abductions could be. Part alien abduction story and part contactee story, Betty's contact occurred during a tumultuous period in her life. It proved to be a frightening, and reassuring experience, one that proved to reinforce Betty's own religious beliefs.

Stephanie Quick stops by to discuss the case, how social status plays a part in the UFO and alien abduction stories we know by heart, the out of body nature of the Andreasson Affair, and esotericism vs. its practice.

    132: The History of Alien Abductions, Part 0: Paleo-Abductions Dec 19, 2022
    Show notes

In our first installment of our History of Abductions series, I put forth the premise that abductions weren't in print before 1957... welp, that's not entirely true. On this episode I dive into the origins of the phenomenon with fae encounters from Celtic lore, and the stories of the chaneques, gnomes, from Mexico. I also dive into the classic stories of paleo-abduction, including James Everell's luminous swine, the attempted abduction of Col. H.G. Shaw, and the strange disappearance Karl Hunrath and Wilbur J. Wilkinson.

    Show notes

CW: Self-harm, Childhood Sexual Assault, and CSA Material

We're taking a break this week from the abduction series to introduce a new series, UFO Grifters, featuring the worst of the worst in the UFO community. We're starting with a big one: Stan Romanek.

Romanek came to prominence in the 00s as an experiencer who had one of the best documented cases in the history of ufology. The story quickly evolved into one of the strangest and most convoluted contact stories on record, that ultimately led to his arrest in 2014 for the possession of CSAM.

Brian Hastie from Double Densityjoins me to pick apart this shitty story and expose it for what it really is.
