Ordinary People. Ordinary Things. with Melissa Radke

My mom’s King Ranch Chicken casserole. My small hometown in East Texas. My eleventh grade choir teacher. Know what all of these things have in common? None of them are famous. None have been written about or sung about or reported on. You might call them “ordinary.”

Welcome to Ordinary People. Ordinary Things. Where we talk about all the things that we see and touch and fear and feel and eat and hope for – every day. Because that’s what life is, you know? It’s one miracle after another – we just get so used to seeing them…we call them ordinary.

“THE WORLD IS A SERIES OF MIRACLES. BUT WE’RE SO USED TO SEEING THEM WE JUST CALL THEM ORDINARY THINGS.” – Hans Christian Anderson

The "F" Word Part One Mar 13, 2018
    Show notes

Lead Pastor Jeremy Yancey from the Timber Creek Church is here today to talk about the "F" word. No, not that "F" word. We're talking about forgiveness. Jeremy is married to one of my best friends, and he is a firm believer that when you go out to dinner it should begin with an appetizer and end with dessert. He is also my go to for all things Netflix and podcast. He is also one of my best friends, and I've already had many requests to have him on the show.

This conversation is so good that we had to divide it up into two parts. I share some stories about how unforgiveness and forgiveness affected my life. Jeremy shares his wisdom about how forgiveness benefits the person who does the forgiving. We also have a fast and furious lightning round session, and share some entertaining and embarrassing moments.

    You can find Jeremy here:

    • [08:22] How so many women struggle with not only not forgiving others but not forgiving themselves. As a pastor, Jeremy sees this all the time.
    • [09:36] How everybody is dealing with some level of dysfunction.
    • [10:58] How keeping peace can be dysfunctional because you're not actually communicating about the problem.
    • [11:28] There needs to be a counterbalance how you do it is the key.
    • [14:07] It's not super easy to do the hard thing. If you can do the hard thing and make it a discipline in your life, you're going to have a good future.
    • [14:45] How forgiveness has had to become part of Melissa's life. We have to learn forgiveness so well that we do it daily, and it becomes part of our spiritual life.
    • [15:38] The three categories of offenses. The irrational. Betrayals of confidence or trust. Horrific injustices.
    • [20:12] It's up to us to identify the level of offense we're dealing with when it comes to forgiveness.
    • [20:45] You have to have the right process for forgiving certain types of offenses.
    • [21:19] Melissa tells the story of when a friend betrayed her, and it literally broke her.
    • [21:44] She had to bury it. It hurt, and she became eaten up with unforgiveness.
    • [22:40] Betrayal can be paralyzing.
    • [23:18] Melissa was browsing books on Amazon and came across Total Forgiveness. She ordered the book and started reading it. The dedication said "for Melissa". She knew that this was a sign that this book was for her.
    • [26:56] Not forgiving is like resentment and self torture and walking around with a wound.
    • [27:09] Forgiveness starts with you and works its way outward.
    • [27:26] Not forgiving is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.
    • [29:32] Lightning round questions.

What to Do When He's No Fun and Divorce is Expensive Mar 06, 2018
    Show notes

David Radke, the Attorney General himself, is my guest today. He is the man behind all of the overdraft fees from our first year of marriage. He is my husband Mr. David Radke. I want you to meet the man who makes sure that I wear pants when recording this podcast. We have been married 23 years and 16 of those have been really awesome.

David and I share part of our story of when we first got together. This story is kind of a cliffhanger, because I'm going to make you attend one of my events to hear the hilarious ending. We also talk about marriage clichés that just aren't true. David talks about the importance of communication and how having a successful marriage is a choice.

    • [01:34] 25 years ago, David asked Melissa if he could hold her hand.
    • [03:08] The story of how David and Melissa got together. They met in their first year of college. They were in a group that traveled and sang together, and they became best friends.
    • [03:44] Over time, David knew there was something more there.
    • [04:12] The night David decided to tell Melissa that he wanted to be more than friends, his current girlfriend just happened to be out of town.
    • [04:56] The reason Melissa opens a lot of her engagements with this story and why it's an entire chapter in her book is because David's girlfriend or ex-girlfriend was an adorable cheerleader.
    • [05:35] Melissa always wanted to be a cheerleader, but she can't jump.
    • [05:49] When Melissa went back to her dorm room to get ready for her date with David, the former girlfriend and the entire cheerleading squad was waiting for her. They wanted her to either cancel the date or to record it.
    • [06:41] Melissa put a Sony Walkman in her purse and hit record when David came to pick her up.
    • [07:01] Melissa actually got David on tape talking about how amazing his ex-girlfriend cheerleader's car was.
    • [07:38] He kept talking about the car, but Melissa couldn't hit stop on the recorder or else he would know. Then he wined and dined her at Macaroni Grill.
    • [08:39] David was Melissa's best friend but she wasn't thinking about love at that point in her heart. She was actually thinking that she just beat a cheerleader.
    • [09:17] When Melissa got back to her room, the cheerleader ex-girlfriend was sitting there waiting for her.
    • [09:45] The end of the story is actually better than the beginning of the story. But I'm not going to tell it you here. You're going to have to listen to me speak live to hear the ending of the story.
    • [10:28] David is this first guest on the second show because he is such a common reference in Melissa's life.
    • [11:53] David got the nickname the Attorney General after playing a game of Mexican train dominoes with Melissa's family. He started reading the rules to everyone after the game rules were changing during play.
    • [13:54] Melissa's new book is coming out it's called Eat Cake. Be Brave.
    • [16:18] Our marriage is ordinary in the most beautiful sense of the word. How do ordinary marriages stand the test of time?
    • [17:00] How do we keep a marriage a living, breathing, and ever-expanding thing?
    • [17:41] Communication and communicating how you feel for each other on those great days and on those days when things are not so fun.
    • [18:00] It's also important to communicate our expectations. Without me articulating those thoughts to you there is no way for you to know.
    • [18:31] Marriage clichés. Put a jelly bean in a jar for every time you have sex. Never go to bed angry.
    • [19:36] The reality is sometimes you might go to bed angry.
    • [19:54] Marriage counselors can help you work through many things. They helped us off and on over the years.
    • [21:05] Sometimes the most important communication you can have with your spouse is the really really hard stuff.
    • [22:15] Two humans trying to make it work comes with lumps and bumps and bruises.

    • [27:37] I also have a snapshot in my head of you in Maui when we were getting our vows renewed.

Melissa explains why she chose the title Ordinary People. Ordinary Things on her very first podcast episode. And why "ordinary" might be one of the most perfect words of all.

The world is a series of miracles. We're just so used to seeing them, we call them ordinary things. You are listening to Ordinary People Ordinary Things, and I am your host Melissa Radke, and I am the most ordinariest of them all.

Welcome to episode #1 of the podcast. If you have never heard of me before, you are listening to this episode based on my podcast thumbnail picture. I thank you for that. You know how they say a picture is worth 1000 words? This picture is only worth 31.

I am holding a pillow on my head, because I was asking for something, and my husband was telling me no, and whenever he does that I cover my head and pout. I am a giant child, and you will either come to love me or loathe me. Welcome to the show.

    • [01:45] There is no gray area when it comes to me. People either love me or want to have me killed.
    • [02:29] I started making videos on Facebook, about a year ago. My husband suggested I put videos on social media instead of just writing posts.
    • [02:55] When you have a face for radio, putting yourself out there for the mass population is a bit scary.
    • [03:18] One of the first videos I did was called Red Ribbon Week. This is where our school has us dress our kids up every day in order for them to stay off of drugs. I couldn't make sense of this in my head.
    • [04:09] Monday dress like a Minion. Tuesday wear crazy socks and crazy hair. Thursday, we don't want drugs to find us, wear camouflage.
    • [04:28] I was railing about how this didn't make sense and that little video has had about 100 million views, and that was the start of me doing more video and saying more things.
    • [04:43] This video has opened a ton of doors for me on social media platforms.
    • [05:21] I am married to a man I like to call the Attorney General, because no fun can be found in him.
    • [06:38] We have been married for 23 years and 18 of them have been really really awesome. I adore him. We have two children Remi and Rocco.
    • [07:27] I am from a small town in East Texas called Lufkin.
    • [07:57] The Attorney General and I lived in Nashville for about 16 years, but we moved back to Lufkin, my hometown about seven years ago.
    • [08:12] We were in the music business in Nashville. Nashville is awesome, but we wanted to raise our children around family and Texas BBQ.
    • [09:08] I have been a podcast fan for a while now. I'm a mom, and I live in my car. I am always listening to something, and I like how podcasts have a wide spectrum of options.
    • [10:38] I am hooked on Atlanta Monster, but don't turn it on when your kids are in the car.
    • [11:56] I have so many favorite podcasts. If you have a recommendation, feel free to hit me up. I'm always looking for great shows. I'm also so happy to have my own little piece of podcast real estate.
    • [12:06] Do you ever look at the cover of InStyle Magazine and say I really relate to that woman? When you see JLo at the Oscars, do you think to yourself I really get her?
    • [12:45] Unfortunately, I do relate to those what not to wear articles where the woman has the black band across her face.
    • [13:36] Some of the best and most relatable people that I have ever met are ordinary.
    • [14:16] My professor was an ordinary man, but he gave me life-changing advice.
    • [14:55] I set this podcast up, so I can interview ordinary people that are just like you and me.
    • [16:59] When you are sick nothing beats your mom's homemade chicken and dumplings. You know what those are? They are ordinary.
    • [18:22] We are not famous, well-known, or experts in any field. We're just people trying to do the best we can.
    • [18:48] I think you'll find that I'm a lot like you, and that you fit in here.
    • [19:56] The ordinary moments make up the big stuff.
    • [21:02] Melissa shares her last great moment that she remembers. The family pulled up to Ray's Drive In in Melissa's car Big Darla. They ordered cheeseburgers and watched America's Funniest Home Videos on the laptop.
