Rep. Jamie Raskin on living through the 'Unthinkable' Jan 12, 2022
    Show notes

A year ago tomorrow the U.S. House voted to impeach then-President Trump, alleging he had incited insurrection at the Capitol a week earlier, and Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin was immersed in organizing and leading the legal arguments for conviction. It was the hardest thing he’d ever done professionally, Raskin writes in his memoir, "Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy," but gave him a way to pour his radical faith in democracy into mourning his son Tommy, lost to suicide just two weeks before. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255. The Crisis Text Line is a texting service for emotional crisis support. To speak with a trained listener, text HELLO to 741741.

COVID relief, cannabis, and climate change: A preview of the 2022 General Assembly session Jan 11, 2022
    Show notes

The General Assembly convenes tomorrow, amid a surge in COVID infections. Baltimore Sun state politics reporter Pamela Wood and Maryland Matters editor Danielle Gaines join us to preview issues lawmakers are expected to tackle.Crime is at the fore. While Gov. Hogan pushes a $500-million-dollar increase for law enforcement, Gaines says Democrats think funds would be better spent another way, "The general response was that police agencies haven’t seen their funding cut, so it’s kind of a non-issue. But Democratic lawmakers do want to see funding directed in other ways: to community programs, violence intervention programs. "We tee up topics from tougher sentences for gun crimes to climate change and protecting tenants. Listen to Midday's General Assembly preview here. Check out WYPR's politics coverage here.

What is genius? Jan 10, 2022
    Show notes

Genius is about more than being smart. Journalist and historian Walter Isaacson has written biographies of geniuses from Leonardo da Vinci to Steve Jobs … to Nobel Prize-winning biochemist Jennifer Doudna. Isaacson, who’ll be speaking in Baltimore tomorrow, says he’s learned genius is more about curiosity … and the creativity that surrounds you. He says some cities are cradles of creativity, and Baltimore might be one. He plans to talk about those lessons:

“Here is how they became creative and here is how we can make ourselves think in more creative ways.”

Stories from the Stoop: Mark Gunnery Jan 10, 2022
    Show notes

We typically offer our listeners a Stoop Story each Friday -- We’re diverging from that pattern … to offer you one today. And it’s a perfect fit because this tale comes from a recent Stoop show called: “Didn’t see that coming! Stories about shocks, surprises and real life plot twists!” Here’s a Stoop Story from Mark Gunnery about words spoken to him by a stranger that no one ever wants to hear …

The first Stoop Storytelling event of 2022 is coming up this month! For this event The Stoop is partnering with our sister station W-T-M-D and Ottobar to present an evening of tales from some of the wild, and wildly talented, folks who have created Baltimore’s music scene, past and present.

It’s hosted by The Stoop’s Jessica Henkin and WTMD’s Sam Sessa, at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27 … at the Ottobar, 2549 North Howard Street. Tickets here.

From the mistress of mystery: Lippman's latest Jan 04, 2022
    Show notes

Baltimore’s Laura Lippman has been publishing tales of suspense, and winning awards for them, for a quarter century. She doesn’t take for granted the devious characters and puckered plots that shape her stories.

"I keep trying to make this harder on myself. I think the scariest thing for me would be to sit at my computer and think: ‘This is easy, I know how to do this.’ I want to be kind of terrified.”

We readers are kind of terrified, too, as we make our way through the twelve short stories in Lippman’s latest offering, a collection titled Seasonal Work. Healthy walks in Leakin Park. Common-wall brick houses on the west edge of town. Such common places, such ordinary things. And so many murders.

A Maryland family pushes to prevent military rollover deaths Jan 03, 2022

Since he was a kid, Conor McDowell had wanted to defend his country. He was proud to be a Marine, but the risks started to worry him. In 2019, his father, Michael McDowell, and mother, Susan Flanigan, got the awful news their only son had been killed: the light armored vehicle he commanded rolled over, crushing him. The investigation the McDowells pushed for counted hundreds of similar accidents in the last decade, many-preventable. We talk to the McDowells, and to Maryland Congressman Anthony Brown, about changes that could save lives. Read about the GAO report on military vehicle deaths.Original air date: October 25, 2021.

Two decades ago, just a few months shy of high school graduation, Sherise Holden learned she was pregnant. Today, she leads a nonprofit called SheRises, that connects teen moms to resources and mentors. Holden says this work is valuable, "I can help so many other young mothers rise, just by giving them a word of encouragement and giving them sort of like a sneak peek to the other wise of the window, like, you know what, your life isn’t over. There’s so many things that you can do, there're so many ways that you can accomplish goals."We hear about love and perseverance from Sherise and her daughter, Autumn. Find out how to get involved here.
