The pain and politics of migraine disease Jan 24, 2022
    Show notes

Nearly 40 million Americans suffer from migraine attacks. They’ve been viewed as a ‘middle-aged white woman’s malady,’ but research shows otherwise.

Dr. Courtney White talks about racial disparities in treatment and why the syndrome is misunderstood:

“People think it’s just a bad headache and that you can tough through it -- take some over the counter medications. And this is not true, this is a neurological disease.”

Then Jaime Sanders, who has coped with daily migraine pain for forty years, tells why she pushes for better access to care, and talks about her advocacy goals:

“To make sure that everyone is seen and heard and validated and respected. I’ve gone through so much of my life being dismissed, and I know how that feels not being believed.”

Winter hiking? Why not? Jan 21, 2022
    Show notes

Bundle up! The Natural History Society of Maryland is gearing up for outdoor expeditions this weekend.

Professor Vanessa Beauchamp leads a tree identification tour at Towson University’s Glen Arboretum and says you’ll be surprised by what a simple twig can reveal.

Plus, Naturalist Kerry Wixted says a winter hike along the Patuxent River holds lots of surprises. Growing up, she thought she’d need to travel to faraway places to experience the glory of nature, but now she finds it in her own backyard.

“So what I like to do is share those wonders of nature and wildlife with others, and teach people how to see all the cool stuff that we have here in Maryland.”

What happens when the pause on student loan repayment ends? Jan 20, 2022

Freedom to vote Jan 19, 2022
    Show notes

Since the huge voter turnout in 2020, many states are making it harder to vote: Dozens of new laws restrict who can vote; and how, when and where they can do it.

University of Baltimore law professor Gilda Daniels, author of Uncounted: The Crisis of Voter Suppression in America, says she’s not surprised.

“It is consistent with history. Which is that we have these cycles of progress, and they are met with these almost violent attempts of regression in regards to the right to vote.”

The odds are slim the Senate will pass the proposals it’s debating to set national standards for elections. But Maryland Congressman John Sarbanes, sponsor of a bill at the center of the fight, says he still hopes the debate will impel a couple colleagues to move to his side.

Undoing the American residential caste system Jan 18, 2022
    Show notes

When millions of African Americans moved from the rural south to northern cities, exclusionary zoning and restrictive covenants worked to constrain their space. Over time, these practices evolved into lending discrimination and then into urban renewal projects that displaced Black communities.

Georgetown law professor Sheryll Cashin argues that geography is central to the American residential caste system, "The biggest myth in this country is that high opportunity living is earned and that ‘hood’ living is the deserved result of bad individual choices. It’s government systemic practices that created this landscape, that frankly, we’re all ensnared in."

Cashin’s latest book White Space, Black Hood.

Omicron and the continuing inequity of coronavirus care Jan 14, 2022
    Show notes

The Covid-19 omicron variant has thrown the US into another wave of confusion -- how to mask, when and how to test, when to isolate.

Dr. Zachary Berger, a physician at Johns Hopkins and Catholic Charities ‘Esperanza Health Services Clinic,’ shares his thoughts about the current surge in infections … and also ways he see the pandemic further exposing inequities in access to health care:

“Be better, behave better, wear masks better, be more careful. Sure, I’m a doctor and I tell people to be careful. But I also tell people to recognize when things are larger than them and we should organize to make those things better.”

And Baltimore Teachers Union president Diamonté Brown tells us what her constituents have been experiencing this week … and her hope for working more collaboratively with leaders of the schools district as the pandemic stretches on.

“The shift was very abrupt and communicated late and people would like to see transition plans built in for the future so that doesn’t happen again.”
