    Show notes

Hear how to launch your own business, successfully

In this podcast you are going to meet Maggie Karshner. She loves to work with people who want to set themselves up in a new business or grow the one they currently have. She and I talk about how to help solo-preneurs take their ideas and become coaches, consultants, therapists, chefs, specialists helping kids get into college, branding experts...you name it and Maggie has done it. During our podcast, we want to help you see what is possible and make it happen. Listen in!

Watch and listen to our conversation here

The challenge of making it on your own

What Maggie and I both know is that it is difficult leaving a career in a corporate job and launching your own business, successfully. My husband Andy and I have seen that among the students at Washington University during our Simon Initiative for Entrepreneurship summits. And at SAMC, we witness it every day as people come to us to help them frame their story, strengthen their brand, conceptualize their business, and get it off the ground, maybe with a Blue Ocean Strategy.

In our conversation, Maggie describes her approach of taking clients through a systematic, step-by-step process that helps them break down tasks into manageable steps. We then talk about the tools you need as an entrepreneur, from a good business plan and a clear understanding of client needs to the marketing and staffing requirements of your particular business. It isn't easy. But it is happening all over the place as men and women launch new businesses and watch them grow—or not.

    About Maggie Karshner

Maggie Karshner is a self-employment coach based in Seattle, WA, serving solo-preneurs throughout the US. Rather than telling clients how it "should" be done, she listens to their goals and helps them achieve what's important to them. She is widely versed in all things relevant to self-employment, from organizational structure and financials to marketing and promotion.

Prior to launching her business coaching firm in 2014, Maggie had ten years' experience managing a small business, supporting non-profits, and being a corporate business consultant. In addition to working closely with entrepreneurs throughout her career, she is an entrepreneur herself twice over. She has a BA in Geography from Syracuse University. You can connect with Maggie on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, her website www.maggiekarshner.com or her blog.

    Show notes

Learn a new way of thinking for new types of solutions

Have you ever really wanted to know how to think about a problem in a new way? Maybe you need to improve your company's communications and conversations. Or your employees' motivation and productivity. Perhaps a Design Thinker could help you step back and objectively observe what the problem is and how you could conceptualize different ways to resolve it. Today I have the pleasure of interviewing Lisa Perrine. We have known each other for quite some time, and I am endlessly amazed at what she brings to our audience. Please listen, learn and share!

Watch and listen to our conversation here

Using Design Thinking to solve workplace problems in new ways

Lisa and her colleagues focus on the human elements of communication: the interplay between workplace culture and communication, how people experience media, and how individuals interact with technology. As an anthropologist, I am particularly interested in the ROI of Design Thinking, in part because Design Thinkers have embraced ethnographic research and bring different types of observational thinking into their designs, much like we do at SAMC in our work with clients. During my interview with Lisa, you will learn a great deal about:

    • Media Synchronicity for Virtual Meetings
    • Psychological Safety in Workplace Teams
    • The ROI of Design Thinking

    About Lisa Perrine

Lisa is an experience designer, communication strategist and CEO of Cibola Systems. She approaches her work with a mixture of curiosity, creativity and the expertise gained from completing over 1000 consulting engagements for clients such as Netflix Los Angeles and London, Pacific Life Insurance Headquarters, Providence St. Joseph Health Donor Experience Design, SAG-AFTRA Los Angeles and New York, Sony Music West Coast Headquarters, TikTok Studio and United Talent Agency Headquarters.

In 2013 Lisa successfully defended her dissertation for her doctorate degree in Organizational Leadership from Pepperdine University. 293: Marie-Claude Stockl—The Time Is Now To Boldly Reinvent The Role Of Women In Business Nov 29, 2021
    Show notes

Hear how change can really, actually happen for you

While I have known Marie-Claude Stockl a long time and we are both devoted horse lovers, I never had the pleasure of really getting to know her back story, and how she became so successful doing interesting and important things in teaching people how to better communicate. Today we have a splendid conversation about the challenges women face in the workplace, and the slow pace of change taking place in our society today. Both Marie-Claude and I have experienced being the only woman in the room and we have both endured, determinedly overcoming challenges and bias. Yet, we are both optimists at heart and enthused by the possibilities and opportunities we see for women today, and going forward.Do listen in!

Watch and listen to our conversation here

Three themes we discuss which you will enjoy:

    1. We both grew up with strong women in our lives. They served as inspirational role models and taught us a great deal about how to thrive when we don't always have a clear path forward.
    2. Marie-Claude is a big believer in helping people change. Her current venture is to become certified in a program to help organizations reinvent themselves. Our discussion about the relationship between innovation and reinvention is fascinating. Since for most of my career I have helped organizations change, I love learning about new thinking and innovative approaches for getting organizations and the people within them to do what they don't like to do, which of course is to change.
    3. The Horse Institute which Marie-Claude created is a brilliant idea. She brings people and horses together and lets them each teach the other about how to communicate, given that horses cannot talk and humans often have trouble listening.

    About Marie-Claude Stockl

Marie-Claude is a native of France who began her career in New York, where she reported to presidents and CEOs at Nestlé, Bristol Myers Squibb and Revlon for 20 years. She has orchestrated high profile events with such newsmakers as a former US President, James Earl Jones, Michael Jackson, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Angela Lansbury and Henri Winkler.

Fifteen years ago, she combined her two passions, corporate life and horses, by creating The Horse Institute, where she brings executives to her horse farm in Ancramdale, NY for strategic retreats and team development. Marie-Claude graduated summa cum laude from the University of Paris with a Masters Degree in Communications, is a certified facilitator and executive coach, and is currently studying to become a certified Reinvention Practitioner.

You can reach Marie-Claude through LinkedIn, Facebook, or The Horse Institute website. You can also email her at mc@thehorseinstitute.com.

    Show notes

Hear how fulfilling customers' needs can lead to a big success!

Marsha Friedman is one of those women entrepreneurs who started with little and built a great business in the public relations and communications arena. She didn't start with a plan. Her parents didn't enable her to go to college. She was simply supposed to find a wealthy man and get married. She never had much funding or capital. She just listened and believed in herself. As she shares with us, she learned over the years to care a lot, have the courage to try and try again, and to think about the customer as part of your team. Hers is an amazing story, one we should all listen to and learn a great deal from.

Watch and listen to our conversation here

Marsha's secret to starting and growing a hugely successful business

In our podcast, Marsha and I speak at length about her own journey. As a fellow entrepreneur, I know the feeling of not being sure where to start and how to get going. She did as well. Throughout our conversation, we share with other women the art of starting and growing a business, no matter the industry.

Marsha learned early on to listen to what people were asking for and find ways to fulfill their needs. It worked. Her media PR firm, News & Experts, became an exceptional organization which she sold after 30 years. Now she is on her way to her next journey.

For Marsha, there really is no retirement. This current stage is just a time when she can grow her spirit, share her wisdom and enjoy life with her husband, children and grandchildren. Enjoy our talk and think about your own journey.

291: Michael Schein—How To Hype Your Business Into Success During Fast-Changing Times Nov 15, 2021
    Show notes

Learn how to make "hype" powerfully work for you

This was an amazing interview. I met Michael Schein when he interviewed me for an article he was writing for Psychology Today about my podcast, On the Brink with Andi Simon. That's right, the one you are listening to right now. Our conversation led to today's wonderful opportunity to interview him and share his big ideas about how to embrace "hype" and use it to build success. I know "hype" sounds suspect, but in Michael's case, it involves learning about how people make decisions, and how charismatic leaders capture our attention and cause us to follow them, even when what they are pushing is a hoax or a sham. Here's your chance to learn from an expert how to capitalize on hype, in a good way!

Watch and listen to our conversation here

Grow your big idea into a big success

In our talk, Michael outlines some of his tricks so you can try them. Here are several which we use at SAMC, and you can as well:

    1. Develop a simple slogan that captures the essence of who you are and what you do. For us, it's "We turn observation into innovation."
    1. Produce a visual symbol that stands for you. Make it bold and simple and then imbue it with meaning. Remember how Nike so powerfully did that with their swoosh. To the right is ours:
    1. Embrace repetition. You can never say it, sing it, or show it too much. It takes a lot of time for a message to become yours.

    Show notes

Hear how to really find more happiness in your life

What can one say about a man who is on a journey to bring better clarity and purpose to all of us who meet him? Interesting? Inspiring? Passionate? Of course. But what I love about Frank Schaeffer is that he has discovered the beauty in caring for others and the power of love, children and family to bring meaning into our lives. In today's podcast, Frank and I talk about his latest book, Fall in Love, Have Children, Stay Put, Save the Planet, Be Happy, but we could be talking about his entire life. It has been one of discovering himself, what really matters, and how, from this new-found purpose, he has emerged as an author, film director, screenwriter, public speaker...and an inspiration. Frank is a true gem. Enjoy.

Watch and listen to our conversation here

Our conversation is all around that elusive word "Happiness"

Why is it so hard for people to find purpose and happiness in their lives? Far too many of my clients have achieved professional success yet are searching for something more. They arrive at a point where they've finally "made it" only to discover it isn't enough, or they find themselves banging up against a glass ceiling that won't budge, or they're asking themselves almost daily what are they doing in that job.

So many of the things we thought we valued have come under greater scrutiny as a result of the pandemic. The impact of these past two years is not going away, and the way we used to do things is probably not coming back. What can we do? Ask Frank. What he might tell you is that this is a time to shift your life's direction and focus on what "really matters."

Are you ready to make some life changes?

Read Frank's new book. Also, perhaps our program, Rethink Your Journey wth Andi Simon, could be of help to you. Maybe you want to join our group on Facebook, Rethink with Andi Simon. We are here to listen and help you become the best that you can be. Frank is as well. Don't wait, go find your joy!

289: Leslie Rasmussen—Are You Compelled to Write a Great Novel? Nov 01, 2021
    Show notes

Hear how to find your voice, even in the midst of change

What a powerful conversation I had with Leslie Rasmussen, award-winning author of the novel After Happily Ever After. It is a book that tells a story about a woman, perhaps you or me, who realizes that it is time for her to rethink the woman she used to be and wants to become. Sounds both familiar and intriguing, right? It is. While Leslie will tell you in our podcast all about her own journey, she also will shed light on how this novel emerged and why she has used it to give a voice to many women today facing the pain of change. Whether it is pandemic fatigue or watching the house empty as the kids head off to college, I know this is a conversation you will enjoy and a book you will want to read.

Watch and listen to our conversation here

An empty nester learning to love herself "one blunder at a time"

Inspiration for Leslie's debut novel can be traced back to 2016. As she spent time around other mothers, she decided to write a fictionalized treatment of actual human scenarios from a woman's perspective. From information gleaned in interviews with anonymous women who spoke candidly about their marriages, she connected the dots between their stories and created a protagonist who is the composite of many women, including herself.

    About Leslie Rasmussen

After graduating with a bachelor's in communications from UCLA, Leslie wrote television comedies, becoming a member of the Writers Guild of America West. She wrote for Gerald McRaney, Burt Reynolds, Roseanne Barr, Norm McDonald, Drew Carey and Ralph Macchio, as well as The Wild Thornberrys and Sweet Valley High. She then earned a master's degree in nutrition and ran her own business for ten years. Most recently, her essays have been published in more than 20 online magazines, including Huffington Post. She is a member of The Alliance of Therapy Dogs and volunteers at her local animal shelter. You can connect with Leslie on LinkedIn and through her website.

288: Todd Wheeler—How Can This Guide Help You Get To Where You Want To Go? Oct 25, 2021
    Show notes

Hear how happy employees can drive your bottom line

Todd Wheeler heard me speak at a Vistage International talk I was giving on Blue Ocean Strategy®. While it was remote (I was in New York and he in Colorado), we hit it off. What we talk about today is his fresh approach to helping people see things that are all around them. We shared so many of the same ideas about what holds people back, their resistance to the unfamiliar and the new, and their attachment to things that no longer have much value. Todd thinks of himself as "The Architect." I see him as both the architect and the builder, and when you listen in on our conversation, I bet you'll agree. Enjoy.

Watch and listen to our conversation here

Helping people and their organizations think and act more creatively

One thing Todd and I immediately agreed upon is that there are important core values and stories that structure the foundational roots of an organization, and like it or not, we live those stories and they in turn reflect our values. When Todd works with a company, he looks at its very roots, the critical aspects that drive it forward or possibly hold it back. By examining what's beneath the soil or behind the curtain, he not only knows what the result is going to look like but what it "should" look like.

Todd also believes that businesses prosper when employees are trusted members of a team, are treated like valuable individuals and assets, and are happy and thriving. When you have thriving, trusted people who care, he says, the collective creativity, production and value of the work delivers a tangible asset to all projects that ultimately determine the bottom line.

    Meet Todd Wheeler

Todd counsels businesses on organizational policies and procedures, sculpting company culture and the structure that supports it. During his more than 40-year career, he has been an entrepreneur, a business coach, a yoga and mindfulness teacher, a consultant, a key note speaker, an investor, a partner, a business owner, a manager, a concierge trainer and a master coordinator.
