    In 1986, the United Way of Cleveland launched nearly 1.5 million balloons to set a new world record and call attention to its annual fundraising campaign. It was beautiful for a few minutes, but then a stormfront caused the inflated balloons to fall, causing car accidents, closing an airport runway, spooking horses, and hindering the Coast Guard's effort to find two missing fishermen.

    In his lifetime, Revolutionary War veteran John Lamont became a punchline for his Ashtabula neighbors, who blamed him for everything that went wrong in their lives.
