    36. PRIDE month: HIV representation in 90s Jun 13, 2021
    Show notes

It's PRIDE Month and since we are an LGBTQ+ identified and allies podcast we are dedicating all of June to 90s LGBTQ+ topics!
This week, Jeff leads an episode and discussion on HIV and how it was represented in the 90s. Jeff has been an HIV activist for over a decade, and with PRIDE this month, felt it was important to talk about how the world in the 90s viewed HIV and AIDS. We discuss our experiences growing up and now, talk pop culture moments that focused on HIV, and then Ally leads an episode review of season 3 episode 8 of the Real World: San Francisco. The episode primarily focused on Pedro, a cast member who contracted HIV and used his platform on MTV to educate the public. Andy then ends the episode with a Then and Now on Magic Johnson.
Join us all June for more topics centering around the LGBTQ+ community in the 90s!

    Show notes

Up first, we discuss the monumental two part episode of the series Ellen, the Puppy Episode. The series starred comedian Ellen DeGeneres and is notable during the 90s since Ellen, the comedian, just came out as gay, but also her character in the series was the first main television character to come out as gay, paving the way for more LGBTQ+ representation in the media, and thus bringing LGBTQ+ people to America's forefront. Jeff, discusses his coming out stories and also leads a round of Do You Know It?! And Andy rounds out the episode with a Then & Now.
