Episode 173 - The Girl with All the Gifts Oct 05, 2023
    Show notes

Spooky season is officially upon us, and Not A Bomb is ready to hand out all the treats! This year, our listeners picked out the movies for Spooktober! We are kicking this terrifying month off with 2016’s post-apocalyptic sci/fi horror film - The Girl with All the Gifts. Based on the book of the same name, The Girl with All the Gifts depicts the breakdown of society after a fungal outbreak. Does this sound a lot like a popular Sony video game that turned into a critically acclaimed show? The two share a lot of similarities! Sporting a very strong cast and a unique spin on the zombie genre, The Girl with All the Gifts was not released in the United States but did receive a lot of critical acclaim in the UK. Does this film have what it takes to stand out in the zombie crowd? Should it have played in American theaters? Are fungal zombies scarier than the classic George Romero zombies? Listen and find out! The Girl with All the Gifts is directed by Colm McCarthy and stars Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine, Glenn Close, and Sennia Nanua. Shoutout to listener Tom H for the great recommendation! If you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com or Contact Us - here. Also, if you like what you hear, leave a review on Apple Podcast. NAB Presents: Breaking Brad - Experiment 9: Labor Pains Sep 30, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back to Not A Bomb Presents: Breaking Brad. The premise is simple. Troy, Sammy from GGTMC, and Jose from Watch/Skip+ pick some of the worst films imaginable to see if they can break Brad. In this episode, the gang “delivers” a discussion on 2009’s Labor Pains. Starring the infamous Lindsay Lohan, Labor Pains finds Lindsay faking a pregnancy to keep her job. Yep, that’s the premise. The 94-minute runtime is plagued with unfunny jokes, a bratty little sister, Chris Parnell belittling himself, lame dog jokes, smoking in the girls room, and some of the worst music ever created. This may be the film that ends these little experiements! Make sure to stick around after the discussion to hear the winners of the listener requests for October! Be sure to subscribe to the Gentlemen’s Guide to Midnite Cinema to hear more of Sammy. Also, check out Jose’s podcast - Watch/Skip+ • A podcast on Anchor. Both are highly recommended. Is the core relationship between the leads too controversial for mainstream audiences? Does the film deserve a second look? Listen and find out! Licorice Pizza is directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and stars Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, and Benny Safdie. NAB Presents: Breaking Brad - Experiment 8: Love on a Leash Sep 16, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back to Not A Bomb Presents: Breaking Brad. The premise is pretty simple. Troy, Sammy from GGTMC, and Jose from Watch/Skip+ pick some of the worst films imaginable to see if they can break Brad. In this episode, the we tackle…well, we’re not exactly sure what it is, but the film is called Love on a Leash. In this “romantic comedy,” Jana wears a lot of green, finds a dog that turns into a man at night, gets sexually assaulted by her store manager, tries to walk on water, sleeps in a heart-shaped bed, takes erotic dog-themed photos, and becomes an old woman by the end of the film. Not only did this film Break Brad, but the collateral damage is quite evident. Do not watch the movie, but certainly listen to the episode! Show notes

Welcome back to another exciting episode of Not A Bomb podcast. Normally, this is the podcast where we go back and re-examine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. However, this week we’ve decided to invoke the “Don Lee Clause.” What is the “Don Lee Clause?” Without using a ton of legal jargon, we reserve the right to discuss any Don Lee film regardless of the movie’s critical or box office success. This week’s show is a full house as we bring a ton of guests to discuss 2018’s Champion. Sammy from the GGTMC, Jose from Watch/Skip+, and professional Don Lee cosplayer John Nance take time out of their busy schedule to discuss this Korean sports film centered around competitive arm wrestling. We kick things off talking about some of our favorite sports films that make our eyeballs sweat (because guys don’t cry). Eventually, everybody spends ample time gushing over this amazing film that showcases the acting prowess of Korea’s most popular movie star of 2023. Please do yourself a favor and watch Champion! This film deserves all the attention! Champion is directed by Kim Yong-wan and stars Don Lee (Ma Dong-seok), Kwon Yul, and Han Ye-ri. Welcome back to Not A Bomb podcast! This is the show where we go back and reexamine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. On this episode, we discuss one of the most visually stunning films released in the past 10 years - Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets. Based on the French comic which may or may not have been an influence on a certain “galaxy far far way,” Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets has a lot to enjoy and one glaring weakness - the chemistry between the two protagonists. We finally get to tackle the filmography of Luc Besson and evaluate the acting talent of Dane DeHaan (spoiler - it’s a pretty quick evaluation and it’s not good). Is Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets just eye-candy or does it have more going on than just stunning visuals and interesting gleep glops? Download and find out! Timestamp: Intro - (1:12), Background Info - (3:00), Listener Feedback - (90:30), and Outro - (106:36) Valerian and The City of Thousand Planets is directed Luc Besson and stars Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu, and Rutger Hauer. Show notes

Welcome back to Not A Bomb podcast! This is the show where we go back and reexamine some of the biggest bombs in cinematic history and see if they deserve a second chance. On this introspective episode, we tackle 2022’s box office bomb, but critical darling - The Fabelmans. Legendary artist Steven Spielberg directs this coming-of-age drama and gives us a glimpse into his adolescent years as an early filmmaker. We are lucky to have our good friend Alex back on the show who, apparently, has seen this film three times! Before we discuss this very expensive therapy session, we spend a little time discussing some of our favorite “movies about movies.” The Fabelmans failed to recoup it’s production budget on it’s initial run but did manage to get a bunch of Oscar nominations. Where the critics just giving this film a pass because of Spielberg’s name? Did audiences miss out on an interesting and intimate portrait of a great American film director? Download and find out what we think! The Fabelmans is directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Michelle Williams, Paul Dao, Seth Rogen, Gabriel LaBelle and Judd Hirsch. NAB Presents: Breaking Brad - Experiment 7: Argento's Dracula (Dracula 3D) Aug 28, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back to Not A Bomb Presents: Breaking Brad. The premise is pretty simple. Troy, Sammy from GGTMC, and Jose from Watch/Skip+ pick some of the worst films imaginable to see if they can break Brad. On this episode, the gang tackles “Legendary” director Dario Argento’s adaption of Dracula in 2012’s Dracula 3D. Oh boy. There is so much to unpack in this one: Asia Argento’s “performance”, a CGI praying mantis, color changing trains, a sleepwalking Rutger Hauer performance, and garlic bullets. Was this the film that finally broke Brad? Or did it cause some collateral damage among the group? Listen and find out!
