Season Two — Episode Eleven (Featuring C.S. Armstrong's "Covers EP") Feb 12, 2018
    Show notes

This is season two's bonus episode — one like we've never done before. Today's episode features an entire EP of covers recorded by LA-based singer/songwriter C.S. Armstrong. Across a low key but illustrious career Armstrong has developed a sound that is ruthlessly soulful, one that calls back to decades past while charging forward and defying boundaries.

This is an EP of covers, composed of timeless songs recorded by Armstrong with the intention of being placed in major motion pictures. For reaons unknown many of these songs never received soundtrack placement, however Armstrong's rendition of Bobby Bland's "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" is currently in Taraji P. Henson's latest film Proud Mary. Joining the table for today's episode is a NOT97 alum, our first ever recurring guest, Amsterdam's own Van Common. Since August, the Dutch artist has been traveling around America and was gracious enough to book end his trip with appereances on the show — from season one's bonus episode to now.

01 "Five to One" originally by The Doors 02 "Not At All (interlude)" by C.S. Armstrong 03 "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" Originally by Bobby "Blue" Bland 04 "With a Little Help From My Friends" Originally by The Beatles 05 "Tainted Love Originally" by Gloria Jones 06 "I Need You" by C.S. Show notes

Season Two comes full circle with our final guest, Brooklyn's own Faith Harding aka Novelty Daughter, whose song "U Want What I Want" was featured on this season's debut episode. Faith introduces the off-kilter pop stylings of Ryan Powers, as well as Suzi Analogue, an ambitious electronic producer and DJ with a wholly unique sound landing in the lineage of footwork djs & experiemental instrumental hip-hop. We discuss Loma—a newly-formed power trio from artists behind Shearwater and Cross Record—and their enchanting three-part harmonies on the single "Black Willow." Fresh-faced London four-piece Sorry offers a raw nod to grunge in their contagious track "Lies." And Portland duo Nurses delivers a warped psych balad with "In The Mirror."

We also play the title track from Faith's alluring & wonderfully daring 2017 record Inertia.

NOT 97 wouldn't exist without Pigeons & Planes. The influential new music blog has served as a constant authority in the world of music discovery for the better part of the last decade. For season two's penultimate episode we welcome Pigeons & Plane's Founder and Editor-in-Chief Jacob Moore and Managing Editor Alex Gardner to the shop. Through a wide range of hip-hop artists we explore the genre's globalization and the unique sounds and styles that come from such cross-cultural influence. France-born, London-based artist Octavian displays such a global influence effortlessly on the bouyant dance cut "Party Here." Season Two — Episode Eight (Feat. Charlie Adelman) Jan 02, 2018
    Show notes

Charlie Adelman is the ideal guest for Not 97. He has years of experience working in digital marketing and management at the major label level, and currently handles product management for Crush Music. But really that’s the least of it, because he lives a floor above Only NY, the home of this show.

On today’s episode Charlie introduces “Ready Yet,” a contagious creeper of a single from LA’s Sasha Sloan.

Duendita—a soulful, Queens-bred singer/songwriter—flaunts versatility on the hopefully offering “Pray.”

We explore Melbourne’s rock scene with the four-piece Neighbourhood Youth and their sunny new single “Lately.”

And uncover underground UK lyricists like ManikMC and Verbz.

Season Two — Episode Seven (Feat. Rae Witte) Dec 18, 2017
    Show notes

Full disclosure: today's episode is sad, but beautifully so. With writer, social media editor, and radio dj @raewitte at the table we introduce a round of weighty songs powered by lost love, sacrifice, self-pity, and redemption.

Rae brings in a smooth, utterly sinister break up ballad by singer, songwriter, and producer Chaisley Lussier. We break down "Evergreen," Yebba's devastating and yet somehow hopeful ode to grief.

Young Brooklyn-based lyricist Rosehardt battles through self-doubt and depression on his powerful single "Bad Song," while up-and-coming hip-hop artist Ophelia Cache stakes claim to her due fortune on the no bullshit release "Money."

01 "Easy Raider" by Pomona Dream 02 "Talk" by Chaisley Lussier 03 "Alright With You" by C.S. Armstrong 04 "Evergreen" by Yebba 05 "Bad Song" by Rosehardt 06 "Am I Enough" by Nick Nery 07 "Money" by Ophelia Cache 08 "Squeeze Me" by Keir

Season Two — Episode Four (Feat. Dan Solomito) Nov 20, 2017
    Show notes

On today's episode we welcome industry veteran Dan Solomito to the Only NY store. Solomito has over 15 years of experience in the music industry with an impressive resume that ranges from work in artist management, A&R, and even as an assistant to Damon Dash. These days you can catch him slinging coffee beans at his own S,T Coffee in Bedstuy. Featuring one of the strongest tracklists yet, today's episode is completely balanced. The first half pulls influence from throwback sounds born in the 70s and 80s—vibrant and dynamic picks like "Just Do You" from multi-instrumentalist Lord Echo and "Luck of The Draw," a modern spin on New Wave from Common Body.

The second run around the table hip hop takes over. We introduce a song about healthy eating from a prolific underground Atlanta rapper named Tha God Fahim, as well as a Neptunes-inspired track from Ohio's Vada Azeem, and some weighty, rasp-ridden bars from Dallas's Rikki Blu.

Episode four finishes strong with a smooth, contagious track form londoner Col3trane—a promising young crooner who manages to remain fresh while displaying a striking resemblance to the god Frank Ocean. 01 "Little Red" by Germans 02 "Just Do You" by Lord Echo & Mara TK 03 "Move With Me" by Tawiah 04 "Luck of the Draw" by Common Body 05 "Eat 2 Live" by Tha God Fahim 06 "Money Fhone" by Vada Azeem 07 "Hearses" by Rikki Blu 08 "Penelope" by Col3trane Playlist Available: soundcloud.com/not97/sets/not-97-season-two-episode-four Artwork by Jordan Moss © NOT 97. Season Two — Episode Three (Feat. Daniel Schultz) Nov 06, 2017
    Show notes

With Daniel Schultz—RCA Records' rap-focused A&R—at the shop for today's episode, hip hop comes to the forefront. We explore New York rap's vast spectrum of classic sounds from sharp-lipped Brooklyn lyricist Latasha Alcindor to the effortless flows and intricate stories of Gabe 'Nandez.

The tight and dynamic Vancouver five-piece Peach Pit offers "Alrighty Aphrodite" and a mesmerizing single from Denmark duo Smerz is played.

We dive into "Lost Inside You" by Uhmeer, a song co-producer by illustrious London DJ Eric Lau (previously featured on 2.2). Lau shared with us high praise for the furtive young artist: Uhmeer is "one of the most gifted young people I've met," he says.

    Show notes

Stro Elliot — prolific producer, multi-instrumentalist and the newest member of The Legendary Roots Crew — shares the table for Season Two's second episode.

Digging deep into London's rich, ever-evolving music scene, we introduce Hak Baker's street-worn stories, the jazz sensibilities of producer Eric Lau, and Puma Blue: a shadowy, lovelorn young crooner.

Northampton's Mal Devisa plays a raw, menacing new track called "Crowd Pleaser," experimental psych-soul project Clark & The Community is discussed, as well as a grand, cinematic, fiddle-forward song by Dina Maccabee.
