International Orange - Jazzing Things Up Mar 02, 2021
    Show notes

This week No Simple Road welcomes the incredible International Orange! International Orange (a.k.a. IO) is the brainchild of New York City veteran musicians and longtime friends Todd Isler and David Phelps. Leo Traversa provides the grooviest bass and Adam Morrison's keys are the perfect sauce. IO's innovative funky originals marry the slide guitar of the American South to the sensibilities of India, Africa, Brazil and beyond. The members of IO have played around the globe. Their genre-crossing resume stretches from Joe Lovano to Phish's Mike Gordon, Angelique Kidjo, Tania Maria, John Medeski, Abdoulaye Debate and Francis Mbappe, Ivan Neville, Melvin Sparks, Steve Kimock, Jack Mcduff, Betty Buckley and on and on...

We catch up with Adam first in this conversation and the other members join us one by one! We talk about the music scene in NYC, delving into the virtual world to play their tunes, losing a bandmate suddenly and what kept them going, what it means to be 'steeped' in Jazz, and a ton more!

Chris Couch of World's Finest - The Best Of The Best Feb 23, 2021
    Show notes

We are stoked to bring you Chris Couch from World's Finest as our guest this week! This on is up close and personal in the studio and the No Simple Road crew and Chris spend some time talking about all the changes that have taken place in the last year for Chris including working on a kid's album, finding a new drummer, realizing it's time to make things happen, the beauty of the Pacific Northwest music scene, and a ton more.

Chris Couch has been a staple of the Portland music scene for over a decade now, first as a founding member of the reggae-rock group, Outpost, and more recently as the lead singer / songwriter / rhythm guitar player in the West Coast genre-jumping, touring and festival mainstay, World’s Finest. Recently, he has started to branch out in solo performances as well as a kids’ music project called Pajama Jam.

Equally at home on large stages with the full band, as he is in intimate settings all alone, Chris has found his voice to be one of honest reflection and hope for the future. His eclectic approach to songwriting has lead him to many different musical experiences with an audience as diverse as the music he writes.

SONG AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EPISODE IS: 'Postcards' from the album Chromatophores.

Jeff Firewalker Schmitt of Saint Disruption - Beginning The Disruption Feb 19, 2021
    Show notes

We're honored to have Jeff Firewalker Schmitt on No Simple Road this week! It's not every day that No Simple Road can bring you an individual that at 14 had started college. By 15 he was running a research lab with a famous scientist and was being published in prestigious academic journals. Now, based in Asheville, NC, Jeff is a noted scientist, holds a PhD from Oxford, is a Chinese martial Arts expert, practices Peruvian Folk medicine and is one half of the new band Saint Disruption along with improvisational titan John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood). The two met in a chance encounter while both in the Amazon jungle. Jeff holds a long list of musical collaborators from the former King Crimson drummer Michael Giles to spoken-word poet Cactus to REM's producer Mitch Easter. Schmitt is also a founding member of the Wheel Theater Company led by Juilliard and Moscow Art Theater artist Felix Ivanov.

We get into his chance meeting with Medeski in the jungle, how synchronicity and connection played a huge part in the creation of Saint Disruption, how he started on his extremely incredible path of learning and mysticism, and so much more I can't even type it out! You have to just sit back and soak this one in. Headphones.. on and ready to have open ears!

The Blue Skye Barn was constructed in the spring of 2020 in response to the indefinite suspension of live performances and in-person gatherings. It was the venue for the first-ever virtual Northwest String Summit festival. The streamed event included performances by members of Greensky Bluegrass, The Infamous Stringdusters, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Leftover Salmon, as well as performances by Bonnie Sims, Daniel Rodriguez (Elephant Revival), Bonnie Paine & Friends (Elephant Revival), Tyler Grant (Grant Farm), and Burle Galloway. Additionally, the event included all-star collaboration sets led by Arthur Lee Land, the Co-Producer and Musical Director of Blue Skye Barn Presents.

Following the success of the streamed festival, Blue Skye Barn Presents held a virtual Rave to the Grave, an annual benefit that supports the Lyons Emergency & Assistance Fund (LEAF), a non-profit organization that provides a community food pantry, basic needs support, resource matching, mental health services, and grants to support musicians and artists who have incurred losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The streamed Rave to the Grave production included a short-form documentary that detailed how community members can access the various services provided by LEAF, a fundraising portion, and a two-hour long musical performance by Arthur Lee Land and Friends and various guest artists based in Lyons and the Front Range. The event raised over $30,000 for LEAF. The success of the event established Blue Skye Barn Presents’ model of providing a platform for safe, collaborative virtual performances that support participating artists and crew members and non-profit organizations that help those in need.

Diggin Dirt - Dig This! Feb 09, 2021
    Show notes

You're in for a treat this week as No Simple Road brings you Diggin Dirt! The whole band joins us to talk about their humble beginnings in Norcal, channeling the muse in order find the sound, what "if you want the crowd to bleed, you gotta hemorrhage" means, what the road back to the stage looks like, and a whole lot more!

Diggin Dirt began planting its roots back in 2011 in the town of Arcata, CA in Humboldt County. The original lineup was a peanut butter and jammed out quintet that consisted of a double guitar rhythm section like no other, and a tenor saxophone...like no other. The original five (Rory Urquhart, Joey Incorvaia, Drew Weitzel, John Callahan and Aaron Gottesman) had high hopes of getting house party gigs and maybe one day performing on a stage. Many, many dreams later, the quintet became seven. As the band took pieces from each chapter and kept moving forward, all the while staying anchored to the heavy groove element that Diggin Dirt has become known for, they began to search.Dirt found its current form when it added a the soul man, Zach Alder, a Humboldt local. His commanding vocal element was a natural addition to the mix. The horn section rounded out its sound with the addition of Humboldt musician Tyler Martin on baritone saxophone.

The Almost Familiar Podcast - Getting Familiar Feb 02, 2021
    Show notes

This week on No Simple Road we're stoked to bring you Wes and Elizabeth from The Almost Familiar Podcast! Almost Familiar is a show that asks the questions... is Pretty Lights the Phish of EDM? Is it possible to love Dubstep and Bluegrass? Have you ever called someone a wook or been called a wook yourself? Elizabeth Dreeson and Wes Johnson discuss the evolving landscape of what they call "neo-hippie music festival culture." Wes and Elizabeth have witnessed firsthand this emergent subculture's evolution over the last decade and are interested in looking at the past to make better sense of the present. In taking a look at the past they ran into No Simple Road and a friendship was born! We talk to these two amazing humans about the similarities and crossover between the Phish/Grateful Dead scene and the Pretty Lights Community, what their 'turn-on' moments were like for them, navigating the space of disconnection, and a whole lot more! Plus since this is a swapcast you'll get to hear about the NSR crew's 'aha' moment with Electronica at Summer Meltdown, the smell of burning shoes during a Tipper show, and what's kept us on the bus all these years!

Give them a follow @almostfamiliarpod and check out their show everywhere podcasts stream!
