Nine Lives: A Musical Story of New Orleans

Host Chris Joseph dives into the 39 songs of the Nine Lives Project, with special guests telling their stories about their involvement in this wonderful endeavor.

Nine Lives started as a book written in 2009 by the New York Times best-selling author and former New Yorker writer Dan Baum. The non-fiction book marvelously covered nine “characters” in New Orleans, starting from Hurricane Betsy in 1965 through Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

In 2011, Paul Sanchez and his writing partner on this project Colman deKay turned the book into a musical. In addition to the CDs, live performances of Nine Lives have graced the stages of New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and (of course) several shows in New Orleans. Paul was also the producer of the CDs.

What’s next for Nine Lives? More live shows around the country? Broadway? A limited TV series? Tune in to find out!

Song 1: Fine in the Lower Nine Sep 28, 2022
    Show notes

"Fine in the Lower Nine" is the first song on the 2-CD, 39 song set that comprises Nine Lives: A Musical Story of New Orleans. The song summary and musician credits are as follows:

"Now, of all the city’s neighborhoods, none is more maligned than the Lower Ninth Ward. It lies as far downriver as you can go without leaving the parish. It’s out across the Industrial Canal. And on the eve of Hurricane Betsy, it is poor, full of people fresh in from the country. Hell, it’s an embarrassment -- to everybody, that is, except those who live here and love it.

Ronald Lewis is one of those who loves it most. He’s a son of sharecroppers who migrated in the 1940s from the virtual

slavery of Louisiana’s sugarcane fields. They have no idea they’re poor. All they know is, there’s plenty of work on the waterfront, plenty of time for family and friends, and they’re living their own Lower Ninth Ward version of the American dream."
