On the eve of my birthday we talk about the final disillusionment I had with American culture after joining the middle class suburban normie wife life and felt like I had been teleported to a different planet, a planet just for breeders. We also talk about the outliers of whom there are plenty in our generation — the opposite of this suburban breeder world — the urban class that has voluntary sterilized itself…and how all this came about.

We broadcast to you from bed, barely awake, to talk about the election — Kamala, Trump, what we’d do if we had to choose between the lib and the MAGA camps…we even manage to get into a fight. So strap in and get ready for some real scenes from a marriage.

The Third Temple and the End of Judaism Nov 05, 2024
    Show notes

We get out of bed to talk with Rachel Feldman about messianic zionism and the Temple Movement, which wants to end Judaism as we know it and replace it with an Israelite theocracy in the Holy Land complete with animal sacrifices — to go back more than 2,000 years to before Rome destroyed Jerusalem and ended Jewish rule. We also discuss the core of Rachel’s research: Noahidism, a new global religion for non-Jews that’s being spread by messianic zionists, including Chabad rabbis, in support of this future Israelite theocracy.

Along the way we discuss the religious origins of zionist ideas, the unbroken chain linking secular and religious zionism, and the increasing radicalization of Jewish society in the direction of this messianic movement. This whole thing is a lot less fringe than you might think.

Feeling down this Election Day? Take a listen…maybe the End Times are just around the corner. So none of it will matter.

Rachel Feldman is a professor of religion at Dartmouth and is an anthropologist of Judaism. This talk is inspired by her new book: Messianic Zionism in the Digital Age: Jews, Noahides, and the Third Temple Imaginary. Check it out!

    Paul Schrader's Third Act Oct 25, 2024
    Show notes

In this bonus ep for subscribers we lie flat in bed late at night on the edge of sleep as Evgenia talks about seeing Paul Schrader present his latest film — Oh, Canada — at the Woodstock Film Festival. We also discuss the upscale boomers of the Hudson Valley, Yasha’s anti-rabbi TikTok optimization, Jewish identity being forced on Jews whether they want it or not, how Lars von Trier is a Jewish soul accidentally put into an aryan body…but mostly Evgenia talks about Paul Schrader, his approach to filmmaking, his discussion about how Wall Street a******s took over Hollywood, and his advice to anyone who’s thinking about getting into the movie business: Don’t. If you can find anything else that brings you a modicum of happiness, do that, not movies.

    Sweet dreams.

St. Francis of Hollywood Oct 22, 2024
    Show notes

Late at night in bed we talk about Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola’s self-financed new film. Unlike most people out there, we were impressed and touched by it. Coppola dissects American society and its media propaganda machine only the way foreigners usually managed to do in the past — people like Paul Verhoeven with Starship Troopers and Robocop or Neil Blomkamp with Elysium. Maybe that’s why most mainstream critics hated it. It’s both wildly experimental for a big budget film and also classical, almost neorealist, in its humanistic ethos…taken from David Graeber, who Coppola was inspired by.

For an iconic Hollywood director and a minor oligarch in his own right, Coppola comes off as a saint and a ray of light aka Valis, trying to break through the Black Iron Prison to get to the people’s minds and hearts. Unfortunately he was not very successful at it since people’s brains have been so rotten out by our bread and circus entertainment complex.

That’s the first half of our talk. At the end we talk about Sofia Coppola, who seemed to inherit her dad’s outlook on life and Hollywood and is often hated as well.

Exiting the art world with Andrew Norman Wilson Oct 14, 2024
    Show notes

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.nefariousrussians.com

We got out of bed to talk to artist and filmmaker Andrew Norman Wilson about his work and his viral essay in the Baffler about the impoverished jet-setting life of an artist without a trust fund. He’s now turned the essay into a talk/stand up show he performs in New York. What he talks about is relevant to all media precariat — not just visual artists but journalists, filmmakers, writers, adjunct lecturers. He’s got great comedic way of relating what that “art life” is like…if you don’t have generational wealth propping you up.

    A few notes.

Evgenia compared Norm’s essay/stand up show to Chris Morris’s work. There’s Blue Jam, a cult radio show that Evgenia listens to as therapy when she feels down. And then there’s Jam, the TV version of the show. Chris Morris also wrote a suicide journalist column under a pseudonym for the Observer…

Check out Norm’s work and follow him on Twitter and IG.

PS: We have a video version of the interview which we might release soon.

The Hebrew god and Israeli bombs Sep 18, 2024
    Show notes

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.nefariousrussians.com

For the first half hour we talk about the Hebrew god, zionism, and Yasha’s newfound vocation as the self-appointed Chief Rabbi of All Jews. Then we discuss the opening salvo of Israel’s digital device bombing campaign in Lebanon and about all the nukes that Yahweh has. And in the last twenty minutes we talk about a memoir that chronicles a Russian woman immigrant’s success story — marrying rich, duh. It’s called Dreaming in Russian and Evgenia thinks it’s so bad it’s actually good.

We recorded this from bed last night. Sweet dreams.

Pavel Durov, tech billionaire dissident? Aug 28, 2024
    Show notes

We get out of bed again to do a quick ep on Pavel Durov, his arrest in France, what happens when you run a successful international tech business like Telegram without playing by the rules, and how this all fits into the thesis of my book Surveillance Valley.

The fact that Durov isn’t tied into the US imperial-military complex like his biggest competitors — including Signal, which was launched with CIA spinoff money — clearly hasn’t been doing him any favors. Can you imagine Zuck not cooperating with the cops and getting snatched off his plane? No, because Zuck and the rest of his peers are made men in a system that demands loyalty.

    Take a listen.

    —Yasha

A few notes. On the show I mentioned a few of my articles that touch on the political aspects of privacy, crypto, surveillance, state power…

    * The Crypto- Keepers: How the politics-by-app hustle conquered all. This one features my extended interview with Pavel Durov from 2017. One thing that Durov and I shared was bewilderment that big name privacy activists, including Edward Snowden, could with a straight face promote Internet crypto tools like Signal and Tor—apps that are openly funded by CIA spinoffs, the State Department and the Pentagon.

    * All EFF’d Up: Silicon Valley’s astroturf privacy shakedown

    * And of course I cover all this in Surveillance Valley.
