Navigating Hard Conversations with Michelle Anthony LaCroix Aug 25, 2020
    Show notes

Send Mara a quick text love note here!

Do you ever struggle to bring up difficult or awkward conversations? Or even if you know you need to do it, you’re unsure of where to start and feel overwhelmed with the thought of it?

For today’s episode, I was joined by Michelle Anthony LaCroix. As a writer, program facilitator, and a life-long sensitive person, Michelle aims to help conflict avoiders and other deeply thoughtful folks disrupt the pattern of keeping everyone around us comfortable — so we can explore what it means to show up for important conversations with more bravery and honesty. In addition to sharing practical wisdom about clear and honest communication, her flagship program and communal writing circles create a space where sensitive people can come together to put our people-pleasing tendencies under a microscope, explore our inner landscape, and hold space for the type of communicators we’re becoming — all in community with each other. Michelle’s work is rooted in a deeply-held belief that if more naturally-empathetic people had the tools to navigate their fear of conflict and engage more fully in conversations about things that matter to us, we’d all be better off.

She and I dive into the job that we have to show up fully in relationships. We also chat about passive aggression that we sometimes display toward others and how we can dismantle ourselves from passive-aggressive friendships and relationships.

Tune in to hear us explore…

    • The price we pay collectively when we aren’t taking up space in conversation
    • How you’re not responsible for making other people comfortable
    • Taking responsibility for your own passive aggression

    Tender Stewardship Aug 18, 2020

For so many of us, the idea of tender stewardship is a complete paradigm shift. Fully embodying your tender stewardship of your body, life, and relationships is difficult because we’ve been taught that what’s right, best, or good is to be last on our list.

In this episode, I talk about the pressures of the never-ending to-do lists and the pain that can come from putting your needs on the back burner.

You don’t need to avoid yourself and your needs until you’ve “earned it”. That external validation may never come so you have to take ownership of this idea of tender stewardship. I also explore building a relationship with yourself and how it’s okay to not have a full understanding of who you are yet.

Tune in to hear me explore…

    • How tender stewardship gives you more energetic capacity and improved relationships
    • Why it’s okay to not know yourself fully yet
    • How building a relationship with yourself allows you to show up in community in a way that’s more authentic to you

Sometimes loving yourself means holding yourself accountable for your self-care, even when you’re too tired or don’t feel like it. This is something that today’s guest, Jessie Harold has discovered in her own life through tending to herself and her needs.

Jessie is a coach, women’s mentor and doula who has been supporting women through radical life transformations and other rites of passage for over a decade. Jessie works one-on-one with women and mothers, facilitates mentorship programs, women’s circles and rituals, and hosts retreats and wilderness quests. Jessie is also the author of Project Body Love: my quest to love my body and the surprising truth I found instead, as well as the forthcoming title, Mothershift: Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage. Jessie’s work has been featured in Spirituality & Health, Green Parent, Expectful and Explore Magazine. She is also the host of The Becoming Podcast. Jessie lives on the east coast of Canada where she mothers her two children, writes, and tends to her land.

We talk about how she incorporates daily rituals into her every day as a way of showing up for herself. She shares the four elements of radical life transformations, why you shouldn’t judge yourself for being “messy” while transforming and how she uses tiny experiments to dismantle rules that don’t serve her.

Tune in to hear us explore…

    • Knowing who you are and learning to learn to trust yourself

Getting Out of the Cycle of Not Getting Your Needs Met Aug 04, 2020

Send Mara a quick text love note here!

You matter. No matter what anyone else does or says. You matter and you don’t need anyone else’s permission to take up this space in your own life.

If your needs aren’t being met, you might be getting caught up in a cycle of neediness, where you don’t ask for what you need, your needs don’t get met, and, ultimately, you internalize this as your needs not matter… which prevents you from asking for what you need in the future. In today’s episode, I into into the cycle of neediness that I shared on Instagram and unpack how this cycle further perpetuates itself and our needs being left unmet.

You’ll hear about the dangers of internalizing the lie that your needs don’t matter. I also get into the fact that many people are ignoring their very basic needs, taking ownership of your needs, and how to get out of the neediness cycle.

Tune in to hear me explore…

    • The false narrative that some people aren’t needy
    • Why your needs are your responsibility
    • What to do if you’re stuck in the cycle of neediness

Saying Yes to Yourself with Tiffany Han Jul 28, 2020
    Show notes

Send Mara a quick text love note here!

Saying yes to all of the parts of you are and really investing in who it is that you want to be is critical to living a life that is filled with joy. In today’s episode, I had a delicious conversation with Tiffany Han about how to say yes to yourself with a greater sense of ease and grace.

Tiffany is a coach, writer, speaker, and podcast host who teaches smart, driven humans how to access and amplify their personal agency so they can say yes to all the things they want to do, be, and say without compromising their standards…or their sanity. As the host of the Raise Your Hand Say Yes podcast, Tiffany is most interested in telling the truth about a life of chasing your dreams—tangles and all. With a penchant for keeping it real, her work focuses on how we can stop over-performing for the sake of the life that somebody else dictates for us and instead start saying yes to ourselves. Throughout her life, Tiffany has said yes to smart things, big things, and seemingly-impossible things, and along the way, she’s learned that the road to a fulfilled life that feels like freedom is paved with bold moves made from deep within our discomfort zones, a vast understanding of ourselves, and a communion with our core values.

Our conversation explored how Tiffany got into this work and how she takes care of her own needs. She shares about how she learned to set boundaries around the things she needs, as well as other wonderful gems about moving at your own pace, slowing down inner self-talk, and how her life has changed since she learned to say yes to herself.

Tune in to hear us explore…

    • Tiffany’s experience of learning to set boundaries
    • Slowing down inner self-talk and the idea of moving at your own pace
    • How your agency archetypes are useful for knowing how you show up and what holds you back

If you’re looking for the other RYHSY conversations that we mention during the podcast dance on over to listen to this one is from 2016 and this one from 2019.

Healing the Mother Wound with Bethany Webster Jul 14, 2020
    Show notes

Send Mara a quick text love note here!

In today’s episode, I was joined by Bethany Webster. Bethany helps women to understand and heal their mother wounds. We discussed her new book, Discover Your Inner Mother and how learning to tend to your needs often involves reparenting yourself.

In 2013 Bethany Webster published an article entitled “Why it’s Crucial for Women to Heal the Mother Wound” based on a body of work she had been developing in isolation over the course of 15 years. Overnight, the article went viral as women around the world shared it on social media, discussed it with their friends, and began referencing it in new blogs and podcasts. Although work by writers such as Adrienne Rich and Christiane Northrup had touched on the concept of a Mother Wound, no one had yet fleshed out exactly what the Mother Wound is and why it remains a universal experience of women the world over. Bethany’s work addresses a crucial gap in our understanding of women’s psychology and empowerment by comprehensively defining the Mother Wound and how it manifests in women’s lives. Through blending cutting-edge research on intergenerational trauma, feminist theory, and psychology with her own personal story, Bethany’s work is the result of decades of research and her own journey of healing. Bethany speaks, consults and mentors around the world sharing her growing body of work that is raising the standard of women’s leadership and personal development.

During today’s powerful conversation Bethany shares how to welcome in grief to process the mother wounds that you have. She talks about creating a bank of empathy to break the inherited cycles of pain that we face from our mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers.

Tune in to hear us explore…

    • How patriarchy has impacted our upbringing and understanding of our own innate worthiness
    • Taking the shame and taboo out of talking about the truth of your relationship with your mother
    • Reparenting yourself and making the choice to love yourself when you make mistakes and fail
    • Bethany’s advice on the two things you can do to start healing your mother wound

A note: Upon recording this interview, Bethany’s book, Discovering the Inner Mother was scheduled for publication this July. However, due to Covid-19 that book launch has been pushed back until January. You can currently pre-order her book everywhere books are sold.

Tending to Your Inner Child with Bear Hebert Jul 07, 2020

Often learning how to tend to yourself includes learning to embrace your inner child and exploring what lights you up. That’s something that today’s guest Bear Hebert has learned to do as they have explored how to tend to their own needs.

Bear Hebert is a radical life coach, social justice educator, and anti-capitalist business consultant with a deep understanding of how capitalism is rooted in white supremacy and patriarchy. In work and in life, Bear actively looks at the intersections of power and privilege and will ask you to do the same, pushing both you and your business in the direction of more liberated moments.

In this episode, we explored why being transparent helps to push back against the culture of invisibility, meeting your need for play, and how to find your way back to yourself when you feel lost. Bear shares what the mental load is and why this can hinder us from making seemingly “simple decisions”. They also share brilliant advice for tending to your inner child.

Tune in to hear us explore…

    • Setting boundaries that create space for you to take are of yourself
    • Why transparency in tending pushes back on a culture of invisibility
    • How to find your way back to yourself when you get lost

Managing Expectations as an Act of (Self) Love Jul 01, 2020

Send Mara a quick text love note here!

A lot of times, people experience shame when their actions don’t compare with that idealized version of who they’ve imagined themselves to be.

Truth bomb: You’ll never be able to meet the expectations that you have for the idealized version of yourself. The idealized version of yourself is just a figment of your own imagination and a result of your social conditioning.

In this episode, I talk about managing the expectations that you’ve set for yourself and allowing yourself to be human. I share a story of my book writing experience and how I’ve had to manage my expectations for myself during that process.

Tune in to hear me explore…

    • Why managing my expectations of myself has become my #1 act of self-care
    • Why you need to get in conversation with yourself and be thoughtful about what you ACTUALLY want
    • What you need to do to support yourself while working toward what you want
