Alexa can hack ITSELF! Mar 17, 2022
    Show notes

    How secure is your Alexa?
Researchers have discovered new vulnerabilities in these home assistant devices that would allow them to self-issue commands, to open doors, tamper with smart devices, and listen to your conversation.
The original report was released in February:
    https://arxiv.org/pdf/2202.08619.pdf
And a great new article in Ars Technica summarized the findings well:
    https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2022/03/attackers-can-force-amazon-echos-to-hack-themselves-with-self-issued-commands/
We go into details of the possible hacks with one of the researchers, Sergio Esposito, and with the author of the Ars Technica report, Dan Goodin.

    Assange's Appeal Denied Mar 16, 2022
    Show notes

#Shorts Quick update: The UK Supreme Court just refused Assange the right to appeal against the US extradition request.
A spokesperson stated that the reason it was denied was because Assange's application did not raise "an arguable point of law".
Now the decision goes to UK Home Secretary Priti Patel to authorize the extradition.
After approval, Assange will have one last opportunity to challenge the ruling in a final appeal to the High Court.
The corruption & vindictiveness of this case is staggering.
Watch my interview w/ Assange's brother as we dive into all the details:

The Secret NSA building hidden in plain sight Mar 10, 2022
    Show notes

Once the most trusted search engine for private and neutral search results, Duck Duck Go, just announced that they will now be censoring and filtering content. It may have lost them their core userbase. We'll dive into some alternative search engines, and share Brave CEO Brendan Eich's responses about how Brave Search works.
Also, it turns out that one of NYC's most iconic skyscrapers, shrouded in mystery for years with no publicly available information about it, is actually a giant NSA surveillance center. Codenamed TITANPOINTE, the center is hidden in plain sight right in the middle of Manhattan, but is actually one of the most important NSA surveillance sites on U.S. soil.
Ryan Gallagher and Henrik Moltke wrote a couple of great pieces for the Intercept a while ago diving into these, which recently resurfaced again on Hacker News, that we'll explore on the show.

THIS 2-Factor-Authentication method is NOT secure!! Mar 06, 2022
    Show notes

If a hacker gets access to your email, bank, or crypto account, they can turn your life upside down. How secure are YOUR accounts?
One thing that can help you secure them is to use 2fa (2-factor-authentication) where you have to use multiple methods to sign into an account, rather than just a single password on a website. 2FA makes your account MUCH more secure.
But not all 2FA methods are create equal. For example SIM swaps allow hackers to intercept certain 2FA methods, so if your account is tied to a phone number then you're more vulnerable to being hacked.
We dive into various 2FA methods, including SMS verification, TOTP apps (authenticator apps), and security keys (like YubiKey), explain which is the most secure, and also talk about the tradeoffs of each.
For more info about 2FA, check out this awesome article from Paul Stamatiou: https://paulstamatiou.com/getting-started-with-security-keys/

Is your ROUTER selling your data?? Mar 03, 2022
    Show notes

All traffic from devices connecting to your Wi-Fi passes through your router.
How much do you know about what your router is actually doing with that data?
    Which data does it collect?
Is it tracking the websites you visit?
Is it selling your data to 3rd parties?
A great article was released this week in CNet by Ry Crist, diving into all of this, and as an expert who has been researching routers for years he was able to dig into the privacy policies of major router companies and also ask them directly about their data policies.
We dive into what you need to know about routers: the data your router has access to, whether your privacy is at risk, and tools you can use to protect yourself.

No, we're NOT entering Crypto Winter Mar 03, 2022
    Show notes

Bank of America just released their “Digital Assets: In the Flow” report. Their analysts predict that, while the upside for cryptocurrencies will be limited for the next 6 months, we're not entering a "Crypto Winter", given the current "levels of user adoption and growth in development activity".
We actually agree. This market downturn isn't like previous downturns: the use case of uncensorable money is loud and clear right now.

Bitcoin Donations Flood to Ukraine as ATM Runs Continue Feb 26, 2022

Crypto took a major dive this week upon news of Russia's invasion of the Ukraine. Despite this, the value proposition of decentralized and uncensorable money rages on. ATMs run out of money in the Ukraine as people rush to get access to their cash, meanwhile a digital wallet raising funds to support the Ukrainian army receives over $700,000 in bitcoin.
Meanwhile another fundraising campaign on Patreon raising money for a nonprofit giving body armor to Ukrainian army, was shut down by Patreon.
