Washington Post Questionable May 25, 2016
    Show notes

This is a Native Opinion special episode: "Washington Post is Questionable". This is a commentary provided by Michael Kickingbear which is a follow up regarding the recent article published by the Washington Post, and it's assertion that 9-10 Native Americans do not find the name of the Washington "R" NFL team offensive. We feature an audio discussion from an episode of The Young Turks (See www.tytnetwork.com) which involves the questionable practices of the Washington Post. The take away from this episode we hope is this: 1.) The Washington Post is owned by Amazon's "Jeff Bezos" who contribute millions to various Democratic causes. This is one indication as to why the Washington post is biased towards the establishment. 2.) The Poll regarding the Washington Team is in itself flawed. 45 percent of the respondents the Post states are "Enrolled" with native American tribes. But they do not state which tribes they are. The REMAINING 55 percent are what they called "Self-Identified as Native American". Well, that can be any non-native that "thinks" they are native American but aren't sure.... 3.) A poll conducted by Vince Schilling (of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe) through his own Twitter account show results that completely reverse the findings. (Take Poll, or see it's results: http://bit.ly/1YZiDBc) Defenders of the Washington poll have tried to discredit his poll stating that it is tainted because the bulk of Schillings followers are Native American. Well, what sense does that make? The Washington Post professes that they polled native American and people who "identify" as Native American. Which would you rather have? A poll that you aren't quite sure all or most of the respondents are Native people or one where you are pretty sure are? Resources that you can use to balance what you are hearing from non-native defenders of the poll: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2013/08/07/the-politics-of-jeff-bezos/ https://twitter.com/VinceSchilling http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2016/05/20/offended-redskins-indian-country-twitter-poll-164554 http://www.tytnetwork.com http://www.indianz.com/News/2016/05/23/vincent-schilling-mascot-poll-doesnt-ref.asp https://twitter.com/blackhorse_a TO REACH OUR SHOW: Website: http://www.nativeopinion.com Twitter: @nativeopinion Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/nativeopinion Leave us a Voice Message!: https://www.speakpipe.com/nativeopinion

Help us get to know you better! Please fill out our survey CONTENT SEGMENTS: Why is it that money makes people who seem to be fair-minded, turn into something completely unrecognizable to most of their supporters? The Mayor of DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser was once against the use of the name “redskins” when discussing the Washington football team. Now that she is trying to get the team to return to Washington DC, she is more than happy to use the name, “redskins” to cozy up to the team’s owner, Dan Snyder. I guess money does have an influence on those who have no “skin” in the game. Here is the article where she professes to NOT using the term "Redskins" to describe the Washington NFL Team: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dc-sports-bog/wp/2015/05/11/washington-mayor-muriel-bowser-says-she-doesnt-use-redskins-because-its-offensive-to-many-people/ Here is latest article where now (apparently due to the motivation of MONEY...she know feels it's ok to use the offensive name: http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/politics/DC-Mayor-Muriel-Bowser-Saying-Redskins-Again-303363151.html The Washington post also professes to have conducted a poll of 500 Native Americans asking them if the Washington Team name is racist. They "Claim" that their poll is on the up and up as the result they posted states that 9 out of 10 Native Americans do NOT find the name offensive: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/new-poll-finds-9-in-10-native-americans-arent-offended-by-redskins-name/2016/05/18/3ea11cfa-161a-11e6-924d-838753295f9a_story.html Update on Carlisle story: Tribes Hear Promise of Cooperation from Army in Requests to Bring Children Home from Carlisle On May 10th, several Tribes met with the Department of Defense in Rosebud, SD to discuss the return of at least 13 children buried at Carlisle Indian School. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe and the Northern Arapaho spurred the meeting with formal requests for repatriation of their relatives; however, other tribes with children buried at Carlisle came to the meeting about repatriation including the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Oglala Nation, Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, Cheyenne River, and the Northern Cheyenne. Hillary Clinton's Native Adviser, Holly Cook Macarro is Wife of a TYRANT, Who Harms Native Americans. Summary: Over Ten Thousand Native Americans have been harmed by their own tribal leaders and they look for justice. Is Hillary Clinton the right president for them? We already KNOW that Trump is not right for America. With her choice for Native American advisor, now we see why her "HONEST and Trustworthy" poll numbers are so low. Her Native American Adviser is none other that lobbyist Holly Cook Macarro, who supported her husband's efforts to steal water from Temecula Indian Reservation allottees, going so far as to write a bill doing just that. Mrs. Macarro's husband, under his tenure as Chairman of the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians in Temecula, California, there have been numerous gross violations of human and civil rights committed against tribal members. As a result, over 300 tribal members, many elders and children, have been stripped of their tribal citizenship. Many hundred more eligible tribal members have been denied enrollment with the tribe as well. The results of the gross human and civil rights violations did not stop at dis-enrollment, as each victim was stripped of voting rights, healthcare, education, and elder benefits/assistance. WTF does she know about Native issues, other than being married to a tiny Native dictator? Reinstatement_Restitution said... It is clearly a token effort to show interest in Indian issues. To the Clinton campaign Indian issues mean very little otherwise, she would have retained a more respected advisor. Kumeyaay Queen said... "There Corruption will fail". Ther foundation is money and not the Spiritual creator. "The earth will Cry for many days "and their ignorance will be known when the Capital is Charged with fire and energy. Close of the show.

Summary: Sanders meets with Tribal youth and other tribal members at the Pine Ridge reservation. Bernie Sanders met with tribal youth, and other tribal members at the Pine Ridge reservation on 12 May 2016, In the New Gym of Pine Ridge School (Pine Ridge, SD). Senator Sanders spoke about the state of the country and attempted to show how those problems related to Indian country, and how those problems impacted the Pine Ridge community. Senator Sanders took the time to hold a question and answer session with tribal members and was particularly interested in hearing from the youth of the community. The tribal members answered questions that, Senator Sanders posed to the audience after the tribal Attorney General spoke a few words. https://go.berniesanders.com/page/event/detail/gpgyxd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9joMslOVKQ Title: THE WORM HAS TURNED: Barring unforeseeable events, Bernie Sanders will be the Democratic nominee. Article Author, By hootch Date: Feb 7th, 2016 Source: The Daily Kos Summary: The implosion of the Clinton campaign, and how they are trying to prevent it. Hilary Clinton and her campaign are waging an old-fashioned campaign. Collect a war chest of big donor, marginalize your opponent when they begin to close the gap on whatever lead you may have. We are in a new era of politics with a more aware and astute political base within the Democratic Party. People are no longer willing to accept the status quo, and be spoon fed the “this is the way politics work” crap. Senator Bernie Sanders has awakened a sleeping giant, the American grassroots base, and there is no stopping the forward momentum. Senator Sanders will stay the course. “The worm has turned.” This author believes the days of politics, as usual, are gone forever, or at the very least, are seeing the beginnings of its demise. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/2/7/1481253/-THE-WORM-HAD-TURNED-Barring-unforeseeable-events-Bernie-Sanders-will-be-the-Democratic-nominee

Episode 27 Bernie Sanders Visits Pine Ridge Youth May 12, 2016
    Show notes

This is an audio special presented by the Native Opinion .... Bernie Sanders addresses the youth on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation School Gym. This is unprecedented to not only have a presidential candidate visit Native American reservations, but as you will hear, spend nearly an hour asking tribal kids questions about their concerns, passion, and dreams! This community meeting took place on May 12th, 2016. As may of you are aware, We publically support Bernie sanders on our show, and this outreach by Senator Sanders is just another example of why we feel he is the right candidate to represent the democratic party in the general election. Ask yourself this...Where is Hillary Clinton? Why is she not visible on Indian reservations? We feel this is an example of how she does not take Native voters seriously. There are well over 5 million Native American Indian people in the United States. Clearly Hillary Clinton does not feel we are worth her time. Show notes

IN THIS EPISODE OF NATIVE OPINION: Hour 1: We discuss North Carolina's "Bathroom Law" introduced in North Carolina, endorsed by that state's Governor, Pat McCrory, as well as the state of Mississippi. The law directs trans gendered people to use bathrooms that match the gender listed on their birth certificates. Later in the hour we look at the complete irresponsibility of the EPA to Native American farmers in not even sending a representative to hearings that discuss the Colorado mine disaster late last year. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy will not attend. This is considered a complete insult to native American Farmers and the respective tribes that they represent who are adversely affected by the toxic sludge that spilled in the Animas River affecting the waterways that those tribes and farmers rely on. Hour 2: We provide a deconstruction of the Democratic debate leading into the April 19th Primary in the State of New York. Native Opinion officially backs Senator Bernie Sanders. Discussion includes why we feel News media outlets should not run these debates, the lies Hillary Clinton consistently commits, and we play several clips from the debate with commentary. Episode 21 Hemp vs Pot Apr 10, 2016
    Show notes

HEMP VS POT? Tribes are considering starting crops for both Medical Marijuana, and Indian hemp. But should they? On this episode of Native Opinion, we discuss these issues and more! Discussion points with our guest, Ruth Hopkins: 1.) Excerpt: "Pot and Pretendians" Author: Ruth Hopkins Recently, officers in Sonoma County, California, confiscated marijuana plants from the Oklevueha Native American Church. Members of the church say the plants are sacred and used ceremonially. They’ve since taken the matter to Federal Court, suing Sonoma County, its Sheriff, and the Governor of California, claiming they’ve been discriminated against under the Constitution of the state of California, and alleging rights violations under the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. The members assert that marijuana is integral to their sacraments, just like peyote. There’s just one problem. It’s not. While I’m not a member of the Native American Church, I practice Dakota/Lakota spirituality, and marijuana has not, nor has it ever been, used as a part of ceremony. Claiming its part of our spirituality to avoid catching a case threatens the rights of actual Natives who deserve protection under the American Indian Religious Freedom Act. Yes, I said ‘actual Natives.’ You see, the Oklevueha Native American Church, established in April 1997 in Gunnison, Utah, doesn’t appear legitimate. There is an old black and white hemp propaganda film which was released in 1942 called “Hemp for Victory”. I say propaganda because it was one of those old war time films. It really offers an insight into how we were and (arguably) are controlled by our government through ridiculous regulation, and as native people its even worse. It has always been our sovereign right to grow and harvest Hemp. There is a part in this firm directing farmers to register to be allowed hemp growers is interesting because in the film, the show a copy of the registration. Back then it was called a “Special Tax Stamp”. They were issued for one dollar. And in bold print is stated “Producer of Marihuana”. [Play Hemp for Victory] "What is the difference between Hemp and Marijuana? A.) Genetics Cannabis is believed to be one of the oldest domesticated crops. Throughout history, humans have grown different varieties of cannabis for industrial and medical uses. Other plants were recognized for being psychoactive and were bred selectively for medical and religious purposes. This led to unique varieties of cannabis that we now know as marijuana. B.) THC Content Cannabis plants contain unique compounds called cannabinoids. Current research has revealed over 60 different cannabinoids so far, but THC is the most well known. THC is credited with causing the marijuana high. C.) Cultivation Hemp and marijuana are grown for different uses, and therefore require different growing conditions. Dan Sutton of Tantulus Labs, a Canadian company that specializes in cannabis cultivation technology, states “the core agricultural differences between medical cannabis and hemp are largely in their genetic parentage and cultivation environment.” Article Sources: http://www.leafscience.com/2014/09/16/5-differences-hemp-marijuana/ http://www.medicaljane.com/2015/01/14/the-differences-between-hemp-and-cannabis/ http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2015/12/21/pot-and-pretendians https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMvvNnRjkOo 2.) Black Hills Sacred Site land in trust Why do the nine tribes constituting the Great Sioux Nation, including those on Pine Ridge, staunchly refuse to accept $1.3 billion from the federal government? The refusal of the money pivots on a feud that dates back to the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie, signed by Sioux tribes and Gen. William T. Sherman, that guaranteed the tribes “undisturbed use and occupation” of a swath of land that included the Black Hills, a resource-rich region of western South Dakota. But in 1877, one year after Gen. George Armstrong Custer’s infamous defeat at the hands of Crazy Horse at Little Bighorn and without the consent of “three-fourths of all adult male Indians” stipulated by the treaty, the government seized the Black Hills, along with their gold, and began profiting from the protected land. On November 30th, 2012, Rosebud Sioux Tribal Chairman Cyril “Whitey” Scott, the purchase of the sacred lands in the black ills as a done deal. “I can tell you that Pe' Sla, the sacred land on behalf of the Oceti Sakowin, is secured. The $9 million was secured, Pe' Sla has been purchased.” Additional Article Sources: http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2014/06/28/reclaiming-sacred-black-hills http://www.pbs.org/newshour/updates/north_america-july-dec11-blackhills_08-23/ 3.) Should Tribes Trademark Their Names? In the United States, Native American names and symbols appear on many company products. Jeep Cherokee, Pontiac cars, Shawmut Bank, Mohawk Paper Company, Crazy Horse Malt Liquor and Sioux Industries are just a few examples. The federal and state systems of trademark registration can be a powerful way for Native American Nations to register and protect their names - and to stop companies from using their names on products, such as the Jeep Cherokee. trademark law regulates and protects the names and slogans that companies use to sell their products. The names and symbols of indigenous groups may be among the few remaining resources or cultural properties of many indigenous societies. Can the unauthorized use of Native names and symbols be stopped?
