Ellery Queen: "The Adventure Of The Comic Book Crusader" (1975) Feb 07, 2022
    Show notes

Based on a (remarkably inconsistent) series of novels from Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee, Ellery Queen was a fourth wall-breaking, fair play mystery show that allowed viewers to join in on the sleuthing. The NBC program revolved around the titular character, a mystery novelist and large adult son, and his irascible police inspector father. The Queens must team up to solve murders in New York City after World War II.

"The Adventure of the Comic Book Crusader" is the fourth episode of Ellery Queen's first and only season. The episode aired on October 2, 1975, and stars Jim Hutton, David Wayne, Tom Bosley, Lynda Day George, Donald O'Connor, Ken Swofford, Tom Reese, and Arch Johnson.

Áine and Kevin sketch out their first foray into mystery box games, the depressing history of comic book giants like Marvel and DC, and Dick Tracy.

    Law & Order: UK: "Unsafe" (2009) Jan 31, 2022
    Show notes

Gather round, yet bobbies and barristers. In this episode, we'll be reviewing an episode of Law & Order: UK.

First airing on October 22, 2010, "Unsafe" is the fourth episode of the show's first season, and a rewrite of its trans-Atlantic sister show's 1993 episode "American Dream." The discovery of a skeleton on the banks of the Thames throws a spine in the works of justice, allowing a posh and perfidious killer to make a bid for freedom. The episode stars Bradley Walsh, Jamie Bamber, Harriet Walter, Ben Daniels, Freema Agyeman, Bill Paterson, and Iain Glen.

Listen to Áine and Kevin have a chat about cities, time travel, and why Áine thinks TV's beloved Jack McCoy is overrated.

    The Maltese Falcon (1941) Jan 27, 2022
    Show notes

It's the one-year anniversary of Mystery to Me! To honor our silly podcast's birthday — and its inaugural review of Satan Met a Lady (1936) — we're talking about the good version of this Dashiell Hammett story.

The Maltese Falcon is the 1941 film noir marking John Huston's directorial debut. The movie features Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Gladys George, Torchy Blane's Barton MacLane, Lee Patrick, and introduces Sydney Greenstreet. Bogart plays private eye Sam Spade, who is thrust into a murderous quest for a glitzy antique after his partner gets snuffed out.

Listen to Áine and Kevin pay tribute to this film with gems like discussion of Fleetwood Mac, Frank Sinatra's passing, and the Fonzi factor of Pinkerton detectives.

    L.A. Confidential (1997) Jan 24, 2022
    Show notes

"Remember, dear listeners, you heard it here first, off the record, on the Q.T. and very Hush-Hush."

L.A. Confidential is a 1997 film from director Curtis Hanson, based on the novel by James Ellroy. It stars Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey, Kim Basinger, Danny DeVito, James Cromwell, and David Strathairn.

This well-acclaimed neo-noir centers around a trio of Los Angeles Police Department detectives in 1953. Ambitious rookie Edmund Exley, brutish Bud White, and celebrity cop Jack Vincennes each come into contact with a murderous, mysterious conspiracy, one that proves that if you scratch the tinsel surface in the City of Angels, all you'll get is grime beneath your fingernails.

Listen to Áine and Kevin expose restaurant murders, gigolos impersonating as William Powell and Wally Cox, and Kevin’s first date at an Elvis impersonator’s concert.

The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries: "The Disappearing Floor" (1977) Jan 17, 2022
    Show notes

    Beam us up, Hardys.

"The Disappearing Floor" aired on March 6, 1977. It's the twelfth episode of the second season of the The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. It also takes its name from a book pumped out by the Stratemeyer Syndicate published in 1940, although its predecessor focuses on a more grounded case featuring earthbound criminals.

In this episode, the Hardy Boys take on a case that's out of this world. The brothers have to deal with hallucinogenic home decor and unidentified flying objects! But they've got to keep it together as they face off against Cold War spies and bizarrely botched movie references.

Listen to Áine and Kevin phone home about family-owned businesses, Casablanca, Sanford and Son, and Kevin's ongoing investigation into his wife.

Sherlock Holmes Faces Death (1943) Jan 10, 2022
    Show notes

Sherlock Holmes will be the death of us!

Hey, it's a cool title. But the movie itself is at death's doorstep, so to speak.

Sherlock Holmes Faces Death is a 1943 film starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce and directed by Roy William Neil. Set during World War II, this film is at least slightly based on the 1893 story from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, "The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual."

In the film, Dr. Watson calls in Holmes to investigate after a disturbing and nearly-deadly incident at the great Musgrave Manor, an estate where a group of wounded soldiers are convalescing. And this is a 1940s mystery picture, so you know more murders are going to follow, as certain as death and taxes.

Listen to Kevin and Áine pay the ultimate price by talking about Razzle Bathbone, The Prisoner, falcons, ridiculous speeches, and Áine's poor taste in fiction.

Murder on the Blackboard (1934) Jan 03, 2022
    Show notes

Listen up, pupils! It's time for another lesson from Ms. Hildegarde Withers!

Murder on the Blackboard is a 1934 Pre-Code mystery film from director George Archainbaud. The picture stars Edna May Oliver as a strict teacher-slash-amateur-sleuth Hildegarde Withers, along with James Gleason as Police Inspector Oscar Piper. It's also based on the 1932 novel of the same name by Stuart Palmer.

This wild and wacky storyline features murder showing up for class. While overseeing detention, Ms. Withers gets assigned some gruesome homework: discover who killed a fellow educator a few rooms down the hall. She schools her snarky ally Inspector Piper on the case, and the two get to work figuring out who's behind the creepy classroom conundrum.

Listen to Áine and Kevin study up on highly-educational topics like bizarre fire escapes, famed director Sergio Leone, ominous dreams, and fetishes.

Sorry about the weird buzzing noise in this episode — we're technologically ignorant fools, but we'll try to figure out what happened.

Night and you and blue Hawaii ... and Tom Selleck, of course!

"Laura" is the seventeenth episode of Magnum, P.I.'s seventh season. Airing on February 25, 1987, this episode stars Tom Selleck as everyone's favorite Hawaii-based private-eye. It also features a swingin' guest star, and a depressing but effective storyline!

So the summer wind came blowing in from across the sea, and it brought a retired cop from New York, New York played by Frank Sinatra. The famed singer guest stars as a commanding stranger in the night, who's determined to track down a missing person his way. Magnum gets a kick out of working with the ex-detective, until the mysterious mission they're on starts to get under his skin.

    A Christmas Mystery (2014) Dec 25, 2021
    Show notes

Forget the little town of Bethlehem. This flick will drag you to the little town of boredom.

Listen to Áine and Kevin carol on about sexting, bad acting, and Áine’s John Ratzenberger fandom.

The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries: "Will the Real Santa Claus...?" (1977) Dec 20, 2021
    Show notes

Drew you hear what I hear? It's another Mystery to Me episode about Nancy Drew, just in time for the holiday season!

"Will the Real Santa Claus...?" aired just shy of Christmas Eve, on December 18, 1977. It's the twelfth episode of the second season of the The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries. But there are no twelve drummers drumming in sight! No, just Pamela Sue Martin playing our favorite Yuletide sleuth Nancy Drew.

In this episode, Santa Claus goes on the run after witnessing a drug deal. Hitmen are after old St. Nick, and his reindeer and elves are nowhere to found! Nancy's the only one who can save the day in this holly jolly hot mess of a show. There's also a terrifying burglary sub-plot. And special guest star Rick Springfield, as a better, hotter Ned Nickerson!

Listen to Áine and Kevin deck the halls with discussions of nudity, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, and scary St. Nicks.

We recorded this episode in 2020 when we were living in Brooklyn, not yet married, and unfamiliar with the ways of podcasting. Please forgive any early podcast difficulties in our sound or otherwise.

Also, happy holidays to all you wonderful listeners from the Mystery to Me team!
