At current, there are 89 active missing persons cases within this region. And before researching this episode, I thought that most would be due to people being lost whilst hiking or exploring. But it would soon be clear there is much more at play.

Having a stalker can be a terrifying ordeal. Sadly, women are targeted much more in cases of stalking. One in six women will experience stalking in their lifetime which is a ridiculous statistic. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own environment. Even for men where one in 19 will experience stalking seems crazy high. But what happens when someone’s obsession leads to murder..

Today’s cases are all considered solved, case closed. However, there are still remaining unanswered questions as to what really happened. Some seem obvious while others will haunt families and investigators forever. Not knowing the full picture of what truly happened.

There are several reasons why people might disappear. Ranging from criminal intent to mental health issues or simply choosing to start a new life. The uncertainty and lack of closure that missing person cases bring can devastate family and friends. And the impact on communities can also be significant.

True crime is filled with unsolved murders that have so many question marks surrounding their outcome. Even though to authorities it may be case closed. In their eyes, it was a simple accident. However, when even the most amateur of sleuth digs below the surface. All may not be what it seems.

This episode of Mysteriously Listed will focus on missing persons throughout the 1960s. Honestly, it was a struggle to get information. Case files get lost. Evidence gone forever. And what is left are families going lifetimes with no answer as to where their loved one could be. I have tried to steer away from more well-known cases of the time and instead focus on those you most likely have never heard of.

We all know it as the happiest place on Earth. Well, not if you die there, then it’s not. A quick google search and there seems to be a surprising number of accidental deaths on Disneyland rides. So many things can go wrong on an amusement park ride. Mechanical error. Operator fault. And then you get the people who refuse to follow the rules. In an instant, you can go from gleefully screaming on a rollercoaster, to witnessing someone fly to their death. It’s why this podcaster prefers her feet firmly on the ground!

Right now there’s remarkably little regulations in homeschooling. In ten states in the United States, homeschooling is completely unregulated. And in 15 more, parents only have to notify their school district that their kids will be learning at home. There are no minimum educational standards for teachers, no curriculum review, no testing or monitoring to make sure that any education is taking place at all. No one to check if these children are okay. Allowing some parents to hide their crimes. Sometimes fatally.

Tortured artist is a term we have all heard. And musicians are a breed of their own. Drugs, sex and rock and roll as it will. But there are certain mysteries in music that haunt the background of songs or silence between tracks. When it comes to musicians, a bright spotlight can often cast the darkest of shadows. Allowing those involved the greatest ability to hide, escape and, sometimes, disappear forever.

Investigators look at many methods of evidence to solve a crime. Forensic DNA. Witness testimony. Confessions from the perpetrator. In the cases we will discuss today, it would be the victims themselves that point the finger at their killer. Whether it be through a social media post, a diary entry or other interactions they had before their death. Each one of these victims left behind evidence that helped investigators to find their killer.

In the United States, approximately 4200 indigenous people go missing and are murdered. All unsolved. Although it is thought these numbers are way higher due to underreporting. We will get to that over the next couple of months. But even at the official numbers, these are alarming rates. On some reservations, women experience violence and are victims of homicide at ten times the rate of women in other communities. This is obviously a complex issue with prejudice and jurisdictional issues and these all play major roles.

From 1959 to 2019, there has been at least one reported hazing death every year and thirty reported hazing deaths in the years 2009 to 2019 alone. According to the Oxygen website, 95 percent of hazing survivors do not report the hazing to officials. 2020 marked the first year in the last 60 that no hazing deaths recorded. But unfortunately, since then, there have been three in the last eighteen months. All related to alcohol intoxication. A theme you will see throughout this episode.

The cases we will talk about today involves a murder victim or missing person who expressed fear or indicated that they were in danger just prior to their death or disappearance. They reached out to others to either ask for help or just simply state they were scared of hurt. Unfortunately, shortly after these messages were sent, the sender either vanished or were later found deceased. Even more terrifying is that all these cases are still unsolved.

Break up violence is common in relationships that were physically abusive. According to the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence, “women in abusive relationships are about 500 times more at risk when they leave”. However, break up violence can occur even if there was no history of violence. The Ohio Violence Free Coalition has made a strong effort to inform parents about break up violence which is an ongoing issue amongst teens and young adults. According to their studies, “a person is more likely to be seriously injured and killed after a break up. And in 20% of relationship homicides, the killing itself was the first act of violence”. If anything, I hope the tragic cases we will talk about this week will serve as a reminder to take extra safety precautions when dealing with a potentially violent ex.

The three women we will talk about today were amongst the most beautiful in the world but sadly, their lives were cut far too short and in the most brutal and horrific of ways.

For anyone who listens to my podcasts, you would know that I gravitate towards missing persons cases. There is something about a person living their lives one day and then vanishing without any explanation. Without any trace of their whereabouts the next. And then decades go by and the case goes cold. How can a person just disappear into thin air?
The Charley Project is a detailed, amazing website that lists more then 14,000 missing person cases right across the United States. To me, it’s always sad when these profiles only have a sentence or two because of the lack of information available. But there are others whose disappearance is chilling to the core. It’s always shocking when it is revealed a crime was committed by a minor. When searching for their killer, investigators typically search for those who have patterns of violence and criminal activity. And while there are teens with a juvenile record, they don’t typically fit the profile of a potential murder suspect. And this is supported by statistics. Only 7% of murders that occur in the United States are committed by teenagers and young children. Heinous murders committed by teenagers. This week on Mysteriously Listed.

The Flinders Highway runs 800km, or almost 500 miles, between Townsville and Mount Isa. Between 1970 and 2018, twelve disappearances have been reported on this length of highway with only one being solved. Leading it to be more commonly known as The Highway of Death. One theory is that a thrill killer operates along the highway. Police have come across leads to support this but none have been conclusive. It’s more likely the crimes were committed by multiple perpetrators who gravitate to the barren stretch of road.

Home is usually the place where a person feels the safest. This is why home invasions are perhaps the most frightening crimes that can occur to a person or family. Particularly because it’s unexpected and victims likely do not see it coming. In today’s technological society, it is not uncommon for both criminals and victims to have social media accounts. Many victims who were active on social media made posts right up to the time they disappeared or were murdered. Today’s cases involve missing persons who posted on social media right before their disappearance or death. These posts have become potential crucial evidence in their cases, as they provide insight into their state of mind and actions prior to their disappearance.

Modern technology plays a large role in solving today's crimes. GPS devices can aide in searching for missing people. Cellphone records and phone pings can help pinpoint a missing person's last location or help identify a murder suspect. However, technology can also add a layer of eeriness to certain cases, especially those cases that remain unsolved. 38,000 missing person reports are made to Australian police each year. Three in five of those reports relate to a young person under the age of 18. Whilst most come home, there are still many families still waiting for their return. There are quite a few cases where someone disappears while under the influence. Heck. It sparked a whole urban legend in the Smiley Face Killer. Alcohol slows downs the brain, leading to not only to the body’s delayed responses but also more risky behaviours. A dangerous combination. A person who goes missing under the influence of alcohol makes them more vulnerable to potential predators and less aware of potential surrounding dangers. Despite all of this, many of these cases do not always get the attention they deserve because of the stigma of addiction and the idea that the person may be just out partying.

Each year about 35000 people are reported missing in Australia. That’s one person every 15 minutes. More then 95% are located within a week. But some like the cases we discussed the next two episodes. They remain missing for decades. 14 women vanished in the Hunter region of New South Wales in the late 1970s and 1980s. Several of these women were believed to have been murdered by Ivan Milat, the Backpacker Killer. He is still considered a prime suspect in many of the cases we will discuss the next two episodes because they fit his MO and he worked in the area at the time. We may never know since Milat died in 2019 taking his secrets with him to his grave.

When someone vanishes into thin air, it is extremely disturbing. But when multiple people disappear at the same time, it makes the situation even more unsettling. And adds even more questions for the people that are left behind.

Many crimes are solved with the help of CCTV footage. We actually have a whole episode dedicated to solved cases due to CCTV footage. However, there are quite a few cases that have remained unsolved. Despite having surveillance footage that leads up to the disappearance or murder.

Work is something that takes up a large part of our lives. It’s so easy to grow complacent with our surroundings. Unfortunately though, people at work are not exempt from danger. Even those who work the most mundane jobs run the risk of facing suspicious situations.

It is generally thought that living in small towns are somewhat safe. The age old adage of everyone knows everyone and people don’t lock their doors. Most of these towns we will talk about in this series are considered quiet communities with relatively low violent crime rates. And this makes these mysteries all the more eerie. Are there a murderer lurking amongst their inner circles? These mysteries remain unsolved to this day.

Many children who go missing are runaways. According to recent statistics by the National Runaway Safeline, one in seven children between the ages of 10 and 18 will run away at some point. Because of this, police departments will classify many missing children as runaways even when there is no history or evidence of this. Unfortunately, there are many cases where a missing child is wrongly classified as running away. But instead something more nefarious happened. This week on Mysteriously Listed….

In some cases the Federal Bureau of Investigation will become involved in a missing person investigation. This is usually the case when it’s believed the person may have crossed state lines or there is potential for a homicide investigation to follow. Local police may ask the FBI to assist them when the investigation becomes larger or more intense then first believed and more then their resources will allow. The FBI have a list of those missing who are their priority. This week we will continue a series discussing some of these cases and what makes them Mysteriously Listed.

Each year, one in four murders remain unsolved. While some of these crimes might have faded from the media’s attention. These unsolved murders and missing persons may not have received the coverage as some other high profile cases which is why I am bringing them to you this week on mysteriously listed.

According to the National Missing Persons Coordination Centre, approximately 35000 Australians are reported missing every year. That’s one person every 15 minutes. More than 95% of these people are found within a week. And 99.5% of all missing persons are eventually found. But what happened to the 1600 people still missing in Australia and have been missing long term. We will discuss some of these cases, from my hometown, this week on Mysteriously Listed.

What makes someone confess after they’ve gotten away with murder? Some are racked with guilt. Haunted by the ghosts of people they have killed. Others are opportunists. Whose admission is for the attention of the media. Or alternatively, they confess to reduce their sentence. And still others are taken down by the confessions of their accomplices, family or even the victim themselves. The confessions that may get them mysteriously listed.

Camping. Hunting. Hiking. All things that are synonymous with the woods. The isolated cabin in the woods brings up images of horror movie staples such as Friday the 13th. The woods are a dark, quiet, peaceful and mysterious place where you can relax and forget about your problems. Or can you? What is lurking behind that tree? What was that sound? The woods can also be a haunting setting because you never know what is beyond what you can see. And that is exactly what can get you mysteriously listed.

Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world. In a nation with one of the highest populations, it recorded only 440 homicides in 2014 and a conviction rate of an astonishing 99%. However, until 2005, the statute of limitation for murder was only 15 years. Because of this, some murder cases have never been solved which makes them mysteriously listed….

Whenever someone goes missing and their disappearance is covered by numerous media outlets, it’s inevitable that investigators begin to be flooded with tips from witnesses claiming to have seen the victim in the days, weeks, months, even years after their disappearance. Generally, these reports are never confirmed and it is assumed that the witness mistook the person they saw for the missing person. However, in the cases we will talk about today, the witnesses will supply certain details that make investigators take notice of these sightings. And while these missing persons cases remain unsolved to this day, these strange witness sightings caused everyone involved to look at the case in a very different light. This week on Mysteriously Listed.

Mysterious short-wave radio broadcasts have been heard, often on the air since the 1950s, and usually consisting of a sampled or synthesized human voice, reading out random strings of digits, usually in groups of five, in various languages and accents not always matching where the signals seem to be coming from. They can appear out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly. Confusion about their purpose has led many to believe that they’re related to intelligence services, ghosts or extraterritorial life. Judge for yourself today on mysteriously listed.
