Chris O'Dell, Author and Tour Manager Jan 02, 2025

Chris O'Dell has led a fascinating life; one that planted her firmly in rock royalty's inner circle in the 60s and 70s. Befriending Derek Taylor in LA, she soon found herself working for the Beatles' Apple Corps in London. While there she was present for the recording of The White Album, Abbey Road, Let it Be, and sang in the Hey Jude chorus. She sat on the rooftop while the Beatles played their last live performance in January of 1969 and even lived with George Harrison and Pattie Boyd at Friar Park.

She went on to be one of the first - if not, THE first - female tour managers, working with the likes of George Harrison, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan on his 'Rolling Thunder Revue' tour. She inspired George Harrison to pen the song, "Miss O’Dell,” she's the subject of Leon Russell’s “Pisces Apple Lady” and “Hummingbird," she is the “woman down the hall,” in the Joni Mitchell song, “Coyote,” and her picture can be seen on the back cover of The Stones's 1972 masterpiece, Exile on Main Street.

Jenny Boyd, though not a musician, is well-known in the music industry. Formerly married to Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac, she's also Pattie Boyd's sister and sister-in-law to George Harrison and Eric Clapton. Jenny was surrounded by rock royalty from a young age and experienced many legendary moments in rock history as a result.

The Wrecking Crew & Immediate Family Docs with Director Denny Tedesco Nov 06, 2024

The Wrecking Crew in the 60s and The Immediate Family in the 70s were the faces behind most of the hits of that time. They were proficient, able to improvise and highly sought after. However, their experiences as session musicians and their relationships with the bands and artists they supported were very different. While the members of the Wrecking Crew were the anonymous, unsung heroes of their time, the members of the Immediate Family were credited on the albums on which they played and forged strong relationships with the bands and artists they supported on the road.

Director and Producer Denny Tedesco joins My Rock Moment in today’s episode. As the Director of both The Wrecking Crew and Immediate Family documentaries, he takes us behind the making of the two documentaries and shares stories about the musicians they celebrate. He also recounts personal moments growing up as the son of Tommy Tedesco, one of the most highly revered session guitarists of the 60s and part of The Wrecking Crew.

My guest, author Richard Campbell, wrote a compelling book, ‘Gettin’ Kinda Itchie: The Groups That Made The Mamas and The Papas.’ It’s a prequel to this fabulous foursome's success as a group. As a close friend to the band and the “keeper of the flame,” as Michelle Phillips affectionately calls him, Richard brings us into John, Michelle, Denny, and Cass’ worlds with stories, photos, and rare album covers.

In this episode, you’ll hear out-of-print songs from their previous bands - The Journeymen, The Mugwumps, and The Big 3 - songs that Richard has compiled on YouTube and Spotify. Skip Taylor - Music Producer & Manager of Canned Heat Sep 04, 2024

Skip Taylor's life and times are part of rock legend. He cut his teeth in the LA music scene in the 60s working with the who's who of rock at the time. However, Skip is best known as Canned Heat's manager and has been managing the band since the mid-60s, shortly after discovering them playing at a UCLA frat party. Also playing at that fateful frat party were The Doors, and he shares how he got both bands a record deal. Skip was in the center of it all at Woodstock and Monterey Pop, and recounts his adventures in opening Kaleidoscope, the hot nightclub in Hollywood that became a short-lived dream thanks to some greedy LA gangsters.

This interview is packed with great stories from a guy who was in the middle of some of the most memorable rock moments of the time, so let’s get into it!

Author, Radio Host and Reggae Historian Roger Steffens on His Radio Show "Reggae Beat," Alan Freed and LSD: Part Two Jul 06, 2023

In this episode of My Rock Moment, we sit down for Part Two of our discussion with Roger Steffens. Roger is a writer, actor, radio host, legendary reggae historian, and author of "So Much Things to Say: The Oral History of Bob Marley" (which Rolling Stone headlined in its review “…[arguably] the Best Bob Marley Book Ever.”). Roger was co-host of the "Reggae Beat" on KCRW from 1979 to 1987 and "Reggae Beat International" from 1983 to 1987, which was syndicated internationally to 130 stations. Seven rooms of his home in Los Angeles house reggae archives, which include the world's largest collection of Bob Marley material.

In Part Two of our interview with Steffens, he'll discuss how "Reggae Beat," took Los Angeles by storm...and led to two weeks on the road with Bob Marley and the Wailers. We'll also discuss his love of 1950s rock 'n' roll and the time he got to meet his idol, iconic 50s rock DJ, Alan Freed. Roger will also share how he got turned on to LSD and was almost pickpocketed the first time he touched down in Jamaica by one of the biggest reggae stars at the time.

In this episode of My Rock Moment, we sit down with Roger Steffens. Roger is a writer, actor, radio host, legendary reggae historian, and author of "So Much Things to Say: The Oral History of Bob Marley" (which Rolling Stone headlined in its review “…[arguably] the Best Bob Marley Book Ever.”). Roger was co-host of the Reggae Beat on KCRW from 1979 to 1987 and Reggae Beat International from 1983 to 1987, which was syndicated internationally to 130 stations. Seven rooms of his home in Los Angeles house reggae archives, which include the world's largest collection of Bob Marley material.

While most of his career has been devoted to reggae and its luminaries, his love of rock ‘n’ roll started back in 1953 as a devoted fan of Alan Freed.

Part One of our discussion starts with Roger remembering one particular concert in 1967 in San Francisco - it was an unforgettable night of rock ‘n’ roll, as Bill Graham introduced 2 then unknown acts to an anticipant audience. The concert was a poignant way to say goodbye to the U.S. as the next day he was sent off to Vietnam. We’ll discuss the 2 years he spent there working in Psyops while protest rock erupted across the nation. We’ll hear Steffens’ incredible story about meeting the Countess De Breteuil in Marrakesh in 1971 and how that connected him to the passing of Jim Morrison. Steffens will also share the serendipitous circumstances that led to him meeting Bob Marley for the first time.

Kosh is a Grammy Award Winning art director and former design director for Apple Records. His first project was John Lennon and Yoko's “War Is Over (if you want it)” Christmas card, which led to the worldwide WAR IS OVER billboard campaign that continues to this day. He designed The Beatles’ Let It Be book and album package and the Abbey Road album cover, as well as John & Yoko’s Wedding Album boxed set.

He worked extensively with Linda Ronstadt, garnering three Grammys for her albums, Simple Dreams, Get Closer and Lush Life. He designed and art directed the iconic logo and cover, Hotel California for the Eagles, the classic logo for ELO as well as several albums for James Taylor, Jimmy Buffet and Dan Fogelberg.

In today's episode, Kosh shares more memorable moments working for The Beatles and Lennon, namely the day he got to witness The Beatles perform LIVE for the very last time on top of the Apple Corps Headquarters on Jan 30th, 1969, and his participation in John Lennon's art exhibit titled Bag One, which showcased the erotic art Lennon sketched during his honeymoon with Yoko Ono.

We also discuss the Marvin Gaye album cover, Here, My Dear, he worked on that so aptly exposed the pain and emotion Gaye was feeling during his divorce at the time. Kosh also had the privilege of working with Richard Pryor and art directing several albums for James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg and Jimmy Buffet - and we cover it all in this episode of My Rock Moment.

He went on to write more than fifteen books on musicians and music history including, "Waiting for the Sun: A Rock ‘N’ Roll History of Los Angeles "and "Hotel California," chronicling the Laurel Canyon music scene. He’s also the co-founder and editorial director of the online music journalism archive Rock's Backpages, as well as host of a podcast of the same name.

Pang chronicles it all revisiting her younger self, as a naïve 22-year-old experiencing her first unforgettable love.

Early in his photography career, he worked for the Associated Press by day and hung at the Boston clubs at night. Documenting the punk, post-punk and new wave scene that thrived there, he was able to create a retrospective of that iconic time in his book, “Punk, Post Punk, New Wave: Onstage, Backstage, In Your Face: 1978-1991.”

In our discussion, Michael talks about the venues that were so central to the scene, such as The Rathskeller, Paradise Rock Club, The Channel, Jonathan Swift's and The Bradford Ballroom. He recalls unforgettable moments with Billy Idol, seeing U2 play in the U.S. for the first time, hanging out with the late, great Pete Shelley of the Buzzcocks and even spending time with David Crosby.

Love Founder & Guitarist Johnny Echols on Forever Changes, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and Sunset Strip in the 60s Dec 14, 2022

Love was a groundbreaking interracial band that came out of LA in the mid-60s. They dominated the Sunset Strip with their psychedelic sound and rock 'n' roll style. And it's well documented that The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and of course, The Doors, all found inspiration in Love's music.

In this episode of My Rock Moment we sit down with Johnny Echols, co-founder and guitarist of the band. We discuss his early life as a musician, drawing inspiration from Little Richard, The Coasters and eventually, The Beatles. Johnny tells us about an encounter with Lou Adler and how it moved the band to change their name to Love. And he shares stories about Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison as well as the making of their seminal album, Forever Changes.

Legendary Session Guitarist Waddy Wachtel on Stevie Nicks, Warren Zevon & The Immediate Family Nov 22, 2022

Waddy Wachtel is one of the most well-known and respected performers in the music industry. His career as a guitarist, producer and composer has spanned many decades. From his early beginnings in the L.A. music scene in the 1970's playing with such artists as the Everly Brothers, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Warren Zevon, Bonnie Raitt, Randy Newman, Don Henley and Jackson Browne - to playing and writing with Keith Richards in the X-Pensive Winos - to his recent work as musical director, lead guitarist and vocalist for Stevie Nicks - he's ventured into such creative fields as composing his own songs and writing musical scores for films.

Waddy was born ready....... Ready to Rock It Up! Following Waddy through his musical career, which is an on-going project, is an exploration into the history of Rock 'n' Roll itself. It's also a great example of how one man continues to keep Rock in his soul and gives his music continuously and creatively.

In this episode of My Rock Moment, Waddy discusses his 50 year relationship with Stevie Nicks - from their collaboration on the Buckingham Nicks album released in 1973 to his role as Stevie's musical director and guitarist on her most recent tour. We also dive into his early career with the Everly Brothers, working with Warren Zevon on Excitable Boy and penning the track “Werewolves of London." Waddy's projects and relationships over the decades would ultimately pave the way to his current group, The Immediate Family, a tight knit group of iconic session musicians that are still touring and putting out albums to this day.

Legendary Photographer Henry Diltz on the Eagles, Mama Cass Elliot, Monterey Pop and Woodstock '99 Nov 02, 2022

Iconic photographer Henry Diltz has shot more than 250 album covers and thousands of publicity shots in the ‘60s and ‘70s, for bands and artists such as The Doors, the Eagles, Neil Young, Crosby Stills & Nash, Jackson Browne, America, Steppenwolf, James Taylor, Jimi Hendrix, The Monkees and David Cassidy. He was the official photographer at the Woodstock festival in August 1969. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, LIFE, People, Rolling Stone, High Times and Billboard.

My Rock Moment has been lucky enough to have Henry on twice, and in this episode we delve into the 70s, covering everything from the first two Eagles album covers, to meeting Jackson Browne for the first time to shooting James Taylor's Sweet Baby James album cover. Henry also recalls shooting Mama Cass in Palm Springs, Monterey Pop and Woodstock '99, which is getting quite a bit of attention recently due to the Netflix documentary that painted a dark picture of the 3 day festival.

Harvey Kubernik has been a noted author, popular music journalist, and record producer for more than forty years. Rock, Pop, and Roll in Los Angeles 1956–1972.

In today's episode Harvey and I discuss what it was like to grow up as an LA kid in the 60s & 70s, experiencing the west coast rock revolution as it happened. He'll share stories of being on the set of The Monkees TV show, his friendships with Andrew Loog Oldham and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones, and he'll recount one memorable night with his dear friend Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. He’ll also explain the cultural shift that was happening in LA in the late 50s and how major league sports played a big role.

Danny Kortchmar on his work with Carole King, Jackson Browne, Don Henley, The Immediate Family and more Jun 08, 2022

My Rock Moment sits down with the legendary Danny "Kootch" Kortchmar. Originally from New York, Danny moved to LA in the 60s, settled in Laurel Canyon and made his mark in the LA music scene. Even if you aren't familiar with his name, chances are his work has had a prominent place in your rock playlists.

Danny Kortchmar’s credits as guitarist, producer, songwriter, and session musician include work with James Taylor, Don Henley, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and Billy Joel, among many others. As a songwriter, Kortchmar has both written alone or collaborated with numerous artists, penning indelible tracks such as Don Henley’s “Dirty Laundry,” “All She Wants to Do Is Dance,” and “New York Minute,” as well as Jackson Browne’s “Somebody’s Baby” and “Shaky Town,” to name a few.

Danny is now with The Immediate Family (the modern iteration of a legendary studio ensemble known as “The Section”), a rock and roll band composed of four of the most recorded, respected and sought-after players in modern music: Danny Kortchmar (guitar and vocals), Waddy Wachtel (guitar and vocals), Leland Sklar (bass), Russ Kunkel (drums) and the addition of prominent touring, session guitarist and songwriter Steve Postell (guitar and vocals).

The Immediate Family had a new EP Live From Telefunken Soundstage come out on May 13. This is a bridge release to the band’s forthcoming second full-length studio album and anticipated documentary, directed by Danny Tedesco (The Wrecking Crew). The film is expected to be released later this year.

As a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, he is the co-founder of notable bands such as Buffalo Springfield, Poco and Souther-Hillman-Furay Band, and has penned classics like "Kind Woman" and "Pickin' Up the Pieces." The 60s & 70s LA Music Scene with Bassist, Composer, Conductor & Orchestrator Peter M. Bernstein Apr 07, 2022

Peter M. Bernstein has composed, orchestrated and conducted some of the most well known movies of our time (Ghostbusters & Trading Places among them), including other incredible pieces of work like 21 Jump Street and Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

He’s also the son of Elmer Bernstein, the Academy Award winning film composer whose credits include The Man With the Golden Arm, The Ten Commandments, The Magnificent Seven, To Kill a Mockingbird and Ghostbusters, among others!

But in 1964, when Peter was a young teen, The Beatles and Bob Dylan entered the scene and for Peter his “whole world changed overnight"...and he decided he wanted to be a bass player.

In this episode we discuss his work as a composer, conductor and orchestrator but we also talk about his time as a bass player in LA. As a young musician in the late 60s and early 70s he was part of that famous Laurel Canyon and Hoot Night Troubadour scene, so he has an interesting perspective on that notable time and many stories to share.

Iconic rock photographer Neal Preston talks Led Zeppelin, the movie "Almost Famous," and LA in the 70s Aug 26, 2021

Neal Preston is one of the most well respected photographers in the music business. Neal was the official tour photographer for Led Zeppelin, Queen and Bruce Springsteen, photographer for the film "Almost Famous," and has shot for a multitude of world-class magazines including Newsweek, Time, and Rolling Stone. He was also the official American concert photographer for Live Aid in 1985, cementing his status in pop culture.
