    Show notes

July 28th, 2017: In today’s show I share my thoughts on Spending Time With Your Spouse which in my opinion is one of the most important aspects in keeping your marriage fresh and new no matter how long you have been married. Podcast #152: What Is A GMO? Jul 14, 2017
    Show notes

July 14th, 2017: In today’s show I educate on GMO's. There is a lot of controversy over GMO's – some say they will take us into the future and provide our food supply, others like myself who are seeing the awful affects are saying they are poison. You need to decide, but it is TIME that YOU educate yourself! My dear friend Rhonda at The Farmers Lamp shared a GREAT article Beyond The GMO Propaganda. It is important that you read this and educate yourself. You decide! Everytime I eat ANYTHING with GMO's I get horribly sick!

For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast:

You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes.

Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show where we are homesteading traditionally 100% off grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow here's your host; Tammy Trayer.

Tammy: Hey everyone, glad to have joining me today and welcome to my north Idaho wilderness we’re out walking and I’m out with my favorite children today and getting some peace, some exercise and giving them the same; I saw it during our walks and through running around is good for them and so for me as well [chuckles]. Many of you know that I was on the healing side of breast implant illness and some of the struggles that I still have even though I have healed for the most part is that I have to be very cautious of certain things: one of which is mould, mould will create auto-immune reactions, for me it causes me to get very sick and I need to be away from [e-maps] which are electromagnetic frequencies which makes living off the grid the absolute best location for me, because we don't have high tension lines and wires and that around our home. However, when I go to town I do get affected by it and it's just one of those odd things that I have to be really cautious of. The other thing I've got to be really cautious of is what I put on and in my body. Meaning topically and what I eat and it brings up the discussion of GMO’s. I say that to many people locally often and it surprises me with the reaction that I get. Many people don't know what a GMO is and I would bet that many of you aren't familiar with GMO’s.

GMO's are genetically modified organisms, sadly they are in much of our food today and what that–what genetically modified organisms mean is that it's not something that was handed down from my ancestors, it's not an heirloom seed that was-that's 100 years old and still going strong, it's something that was grown in a lab and that was modified by scientists and there are many perspectives on GMO's. There's one side that's all excited because scientists can continue to provide our food supply. However, they don't test or see the side effects for years and we are now seeing side effects from genetically modified organisms and sadly there's many with blinders on both in our government and in our society that just don't want to acknowledge that our food is a problem but I'm here to tell you our food is a very big problem. Eating for me is extremely overrated, it is the hardest thing I have to do because I have to find organic non GMO foods in our food supply and locally as well which makes it tricky when you live like we do. Not having access to health food stores like the average person does that are only 10, 15 minutes away. The good health food stores are an hour to two hours away from me. So being able to access certain things can be really tricky. However, we have online options such as Amazon and Thrive Market, Zaycon meats, you can access Amazon by going to trayerwilderness.com/Amazon, they have an Amazon pantry or prime pantry as well as just regular prime but there are all kinds of organic options available and you can go to trayerwilderness.com/thrivemarket and trayerwilderness.com/zayconfoods.

But the thing that people don't also realize is–okay so corn it's a great example, canola is another example. They're genetically modified seeds, those seeds some of the genetically modified seeds are designed in such a way that when they grow, fertilizers have been genetically incorporated into the seeds. So if an insect eats it and kills it from the inside out drying up its organs and turning them to dust, what do you think that does to our bodies? Soon as I have anything with GMO in it I get sick, my face flares, my face swells with red splotches and I am sick for a lot of days and it's really not a pleasantry. So I got to be very selective on what I eat so now eating out with friends sometimes I tend to-I feel as though I may insult them with their cooking and it's not their cooking, it's just GMO's and even seasonings are flavored with natural flavorings; natural flavorings today in our food supply could include MSG. MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) is toxic to my body and to many others. I have a friend who when she eats it all of her organs swell until she needs to go the hospital, it's deadly for her and it's no different for me it gets worse as I get older. So it's really important that you realize how these GMO’s are in our food and how they are affecting us corn, corn syrup is in everything and Canola oil is in a lot of things. It's not like before where our grandparents and great grandparents can get something off the shelf that was made of quality products it's just not the same anymore and genetically modified organisms start out as seeds but from there in time it travels into our food it carries on and the other thing that people don't realize is when you feed your chickens GMO feed, your chickens are laying GMO eggs and their meat is GMO meat. So it's no longer organic even if you're raising it on your homestead it's just not. So it's really important that you educate yourself on GMO’s and focus on trying to feed your family as much

So it's really important that you educate yourself on GMO’s and focus on trying to feed your family as much non-GMO food as you can because what people don't realize is the GMO's are causing a lot of our digestive issues and our digestive issues cause all kinds of other health issues including auto-immune diseases which there is a huge rise in the number of auto-immune diseases Hashimoto disease, Lupus, all kinds of auto-immune diseases and being that my auto-immune system is impaired and I just can't risk, I just can't risk eating those things. So it's gotten to the point where I find–I found out how sick I get eating GMO’s, that it is just not worth what's going to happen to me; I refuse to eat regardless how hungry I am or drink if there is not a good source of food or liquid. I've got to be so careful what I'm drinking, I can't have sugar in my diet so I use our own Stevia but that means I can't go out and I can't be drinking all these juices that are high in corn syrup, I've got to stick with water, coconut water and such things and I really do focus on water anyway and we have beautiful well water. But it's just the point that people don't realize how much toxins and poisons we're putting in our system from our food and it really started for me when the Mountain Boy needed to go on a gluten free and dairy free diet; that was 14 years ago and when I really started analyzing the labels then I realized how much junk was in our food. Stuff that you can't even pronounce, is just not healthy and I wouldn't eat it-you know from that point on, we focused on making everything from scratch and we do, but now I've also got to keep in mind that when I'm getting my from scratch ingredients, I need to be consciously aware that I am getting non-GMO ingredients so that what I am making is wholesome. So it can really be very complicated, it sounds complicated, the complicated part is that if we keep letting the scientists make our food and allowing the companies to process all our foods and not really caring or being cautious and conscious of the ingredients we are putting in our food, our healthy food supply is going to diminish and all we're going to have left is junk and I just don't want to see that happen, but in order for that not to happen we need to all be very proactive and be aware. The biggest thing is to initially be aware–I've been to so many different places recently looking for like non-GMO coconut milk when I go to get a tea or something at a coffee shop and they don't know what I mean and all the different sugars on their shelves that are all made of corn syrup, is just making a conscious effort and being aware of what you're putting in your mouth. The next thing is that I've got to be conscious of what I'm putting on my body because those things absorb into your skin, into your scalp, into your hair and my body is so different senses illness that I have to be very cautious that I'm putting

The next thing is that I've got to be conscious of what I'm putting on my body because those things absorb into your skin, into your scalp, into your hair and my body is so different since my illness that I have to be very cautious that I'm putting non-GMO ingredients on my skin as well and not putting other toxins back into my skin. So my hair care and I don't wear a lot of makeup but what I do wear is quality made products that I can trust. So those are things I'll be sharing in a blog post upcoming so that you can find out the different things that I am using, but like every day after my shower I put coconut oil on my body and it's got to be non-GMO or I get sick, it's just being aware and the thing is once you get off of GMO foods, it's hard to go back and have something with GMO’s because then your body gets used to not having them. Right now it's considered a toxin and your body's not sure what to do with it which is what causes a lot of the obesity in the United States because the body doesn't know what to do with these toxins and then

They are considered a toxin and your body's not sure what to do with it which is what causes a lot of the obesity in the United States because the body doesn't know what to do with these toxins and then the body just shoves the toxins in our fat because that's the safe keeping spot for it, versus trying to process it so, hence why people gain weight and can't lose it. It is because of the food we're taking in, it's also why most people can't sleep and don't rest well and struggle with varying achy joints and sore muscles and swollen legs and it's just–it's really becoming an epidemic and people don't even realize it and neither does our medical system and it's important that you realize that by eating a good healthy non-GMO diet, you can cure a lot of illnesses and heal a lot of problems by just removing those things from your diet. I'm telling you this because I am living it and people need to be aware.

So I wanted to put the word out there, I will talk more about this, this is just a little taste I want you to be aware of what a GMO is and I encourage you to go look it up and stay tuned for a blog post and more topics on this as we discuss it and how it is affecting everybody in our society but pay attention to what you're eating – fast food, processed foods, non-organic foods are jam packed with GMO's and there's a lot of companies that are trying to do it right and they're trying to get good labeling on our products because like I said right now — FDA has allowed companies to put natural flavorings on things and M.S.G. could be in anything from dairy to your spices, to yours sauces, your dressings and you'll never know it because it's nicely hidden under the words “natural flavorings”. So really start paying attention and try cutting them out of your diet and watch how your health changes. I encourage you and recommend that you start paying more attention and researching it yourself – do your due diligence. Those are my thoughts for today, I look forward to visiting with you next Friday and I wish you all a great week and until then you guys take care and God bless.

You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes.

Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show where we’re homesteading traditionally 100% off-grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow here is your host, Tammy Trayer.

Tammy: Hey everyone, welcome to the Idaho wilderness, I'm your host Tammy Trayer and you can find myself and my family at trayerwilderness.com where we educate on our off-grid lifestyle. If you're new to my show, you can go to trayerwilderness.com/mountainwomanradio and you’ll find all the past and archived podcasts as well the show notes and links that were discussed in each of the shows.

I’m out here today with my furry children and we’re half way through our 5 mile trek and I thought I would jump on here today and chat with you about the power of positive thinking. People don’t really correlate that with happiness and a peaceful life, but I wanted to talk about it today it was sort of divinely implanted in me today that this is a subject that needs to be discussed with you. So you know people don't realize how one negative thought can turn your entire day upside down. And it's just as quickly rectified positive thinking. You know in life you're going to have situations where things don't go as planned regardless if you're living in an apartment, you're homesteading whatever you're doing; you're going to run into obstacles, things are going to break, things aren't going to work the way you wanted them to, plans are going to fail, goals aren't always going to be met the way you want them to be met but I'm a true believer that everything in life happens for a reason and it’s not always the reasons to the ways we wanted to be, But ultimately it's better than you could have ever imagined.

I feel that is my life and I feel it's something I need to share with you guys. There so many people talking about the cup half empty and the cup half full. Half empty being a negative pessimistic person, half full being an optimistic person and seeing the brighter side of things and I just got to the point where I don't care either way, I'm just thankful to have a cup. It's all in perspective, it's all how you think about things, it's all how you view things and it's really easy to get stuck in a rut to get in a really negative place in a funk and sometimes you don't have other people to get you out of that place. However, you don't realize that you alone have the power to turn these things around. You know I was at of a friend's house the other day and I got tied up there longer than I had anticipated being there and I've got a lot on my plate right now and I could have viewed that in such a negative way. I could have been very stressed by that situation but I found it very relaxing, very comforting and just where I was supposed to be and just what God wanted for me because I've been moving at such a pace out of necessity, that I–despite how hard I'm trying, I'm not taking as good a care of myself as I'd like to be. So I feel a bit God orchestrated that and that's how it's supposed to be and I was right where I needed to be relaxing myself and just taking a break. I had a very enjoyable time with my friend and it didn't really hold me up any more than I was already held up.

So you need to sometimes just view these situations and the circumstances in a positive way and not allow them to break you. Just like with our equipment out here, we do so much more in a day than the average person and in doing so much more, we also sometimes run into so many more problems and you could do the wows me, God's testing me, I'm in a valley thing, but quite honestly I never feel like God is testing us, I feel that's the enemy trying to get his claws in there and disrupt where you're headed and when you have faith like a giant and your hope and trust is in God and you have a positive mindset and you keep working past all the struggles and you’re unaffected, the enemy loses his stronghold. Not that he won't keep trying, but sometimes, he just has to walk away I think and shake his head and I like that. I just want you to know you're not alone. You know we all have struggles, we all have problems, we all have things pop up but when you have something like that happen and you do the wows in me and you get into that negative mindset, it's really easy to allow that to consume you allow that to breed into you and make you a very negative and unhappy person and I hate to see that happen to people, I mean it happens to me sometimes too. I catch myself and I don't like being in that place, so I quickly turn it around and when–you know we're faced with adversity, I always try to find the silver lining and I have some really just

I just want you to know you're not alone. You know we all have struggles, we all have problems, we all have things pop up but when you have something like that happen and you do the wows me and you get into that negative mindset, it's really easy to allow that to consume you, allow that to breed into you and make you a very negative and unhappy person and I hate to see that happen to people, I mean it happens to me sometimes too. I catch myself and I don't like being in that place, so I quickly turn it around and when we're faced with adversity, I always try to find the silver lining.I have some really just

I have some really just awing people in my life that just blow me away. I'm very optimistic, but these people have some extreme challenges and my friend Pat Kenny; he just blows me away with his, ah, just amazing good nature and positivity and it's fun to be around people like that. So surrounding yourself with positive people can be a huge influence on you. If you're a negative person and you're trying to change that by hanging around with positive people it is contagious and I think it's a great way to live life. I love surrounding myself with happy and just positive people makes my life happier and something else that's really important is, ah, being able to laugh at yourself. You know we all make mistakes and if you go around in life trying so hard to be perfect you are kind of missing your mark because it's just going to happen; things are going to happen, you won't always be perfect because there's no perfect person. So learning to roll with the circumstances in your life, sometimes understanding that everything has a purpose and the meaning behind it not that you always know what it is and you never know who you're going to affect in your surroundings, I've talked about that many times but learning to turn your negative thoughts into positive thoughts is a real big growth step in your life. My son has always been a negative

So learning to roll with the circumstances in your life, sometimes understanding that everything has a purpose and the meaning behind it… not that you will always know what it is, but you also never know who you're going to affect in your surroundings while you are rolling with the circumstances. I've talked about that many times but learning to turn your negative thoughts into positive thoughts is a real big growth step in your life. My son has always been a negative

My son has always been a negative Ned and is some times he still is because of his literal mindset but he's learned too through me how to be positive and sometimes he's actually the light that I need some days because he turns things around when I'm in that spot. Like I said, we're–none of us are-exempt, it's going to happen to us at some point and knowing how to handle it and knowing you're not alone but learning to positively look at things.

The other thing with-the other day when I got tied up at my friend's house–you know sometimes the reason those things happen to is because it's keeping you in a safe place and out of harm's way. There have been circumstances for friends of mine and even my husband where we were tied up, they were tied up and had they not been tied up, they would have been involved in deadly accidents and different circumstances that were life threatening. So God has a unique way of working things out and I really feel that we just need to learn to accept circumstances and not be so taken by them. That's what makes our homestead roll the way it does and makes it easier than what it used to be because not everybody rolled when things happened, it was very disturbing and disrupting and like I said, because we do so much here on the homestead; so much more than the average that we often have a lot more things breaking and different struggles and so forth. So there was a time when that kind of stuff would break parts of my family and they'd really struggle with that negative-the negative feelings and they get even more irritated when I would find some kind of positive spin on the situation. However, over time things have shifted and I guess I've become contagious and it has become a really good thing because you can't change your circumstances, you can just change how you react to your circumstances.

So I just felt it was necessary to discuss that with you because it pertains to every aspect of our life. We go through so many different ups and downs and valleys and different things happened to us on the way to work, at work, with our children and our reactions are not only detrimental for us but they are a learning point for our children too. I was listening to the radio the other day and I guess they were doing some-just some positive things and this fellow got on and he said how his mother had to raise five children as a single parent because their father had passed so young and she was just always such a faithful and positive person and he realized that that did carry on through he and his siblings but he didn't realize how much until he has-he became a single parent and he said that it's such a blessing that his mother shared that trait with them because he could have so easily given up and because of her positiveness and her extreme faith and hope, he's got it too and now he's seeing it in his children and that's a really neat thing, that's one heck of a tradition and a heritage to pass down and something to be proud of. And I just want to encourage you guys that when you catch yourself feeling negatively about something, about someone and struggling through circumstances find the positive side through that situation, turn your situations around, every negative thought has a positive thought that counteract it and I encourage you to do that. Every week I tell you I'd love to hear from you and I thoroughly would if you ever have things that my podcast kind of stirs in you to share, I would love to hear from, you you're welcome to email me anytime at survive@trayerwilderness.com but I encourage you to look positively at life regardless how doom and gloom things can look. No matter how unknown our future and everything else is, just remember you have control of today. Today is a gift, tomorrow is unknown and yesterday's the past and we should not be looking back.

So live each day and sometimes you have those days that you have to embrace each minute and if you have to do that one minute at a time, that's how you got to do it. So those are my thoughts today, I wish you well, I look forward to visiting with you next Friday, I appreciate you all and I wish you a good week, till then God bless.

Podcast #150: Harvesting The Summer Bounty Jun 30, 2017
    Show notes

May 30th, 2017: In today’s show I talk about being wise to Harvesting The Summer Bounty whether it is in your garden, in the wild around you or in local u-pick farms or farmers markets. Filling your pantry this time of year is one of the wisest things you can do. For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast: You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show where we are homesteading traditionally 100% off grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow here's your host Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hey everyone, glad to be with you today again I am in my truck so you may hear the hum of the diesel in the background I hope it's not too bad and upcoming I'll be getting out on the lake and doing some of my podcasts there too. We are working in that area again this year and it has just been so therapeutic for me being able to utilize the track there, to ride my bike and I'm hoping to get out my roller blades and I've been jogging and walking and just taking in the tranquil environment which has been really healthy for me and I'm looking forward to that and I look forward to sharing that with you. But today, traveling again to a customer’s location and I figured I'd jump on here quick and share some information with you. This time of year is a wonderful opportunity to take advantage of some of the wild things available to you such as raspberries, huckleberries, blueberry, cranberries. There's all kinds of different things growing and available in the wild that you can forage which we try to take advantage of as much as possible and additionally some of you may be located in areas where there are farms and farm stands, flea markets–we came from an area that was polluted with such things and was such a blessing and when we relocated to Idaho, it was almost kind of disappointing that those things weren't available to us especially as abundantly as they were back east. So that's spoiled us greatly but there's so much available in the wild and it sickens me sometimes when I am like out here driving around and even along the lake, the lake track used to be a railroad track. So back in the day when people were traveling they'd throw out their apples and their pears, so there are wild apple and pear, plum trees growing all over the place and nobody's taking advantage of all that fruit and a lot of it goes to waste some of the animals eat but a good bit of it goes to waste. So when we were down there last year, we were harvesting some of the apples and pears that we've made jams and jellies with and this year I'm going to be making our family recipe of apple butter which is just amazing. But the reason I want to talk to you guys about this today is to prepare you and get your mind set in the right place so that you don't miss out this summer on all the great things that are available to you. We absolutely love canning and preserving our food and I will be honest I do not have a garden growing this year because of the amount of work on my plate. Right now I am too overloaded and I don't want to put myself back in the position that I am sick again so I have chose not to do anything in my garden because I don't know how frequently I will be able to take care of it, my responsibility is with our construction business and my writing have really taken off and I need to keep myself at a good pace and I have learned what that is. So I don't have a garden growing this year but I do want to take advantage of every opportunity to get my hands on fruits and vegetables that I can. So I am harvesting and forging from the wild and I have a dear friend Gudrun who is in an area with a lot of U-pick farms. Now we are not in an area that offers that and we are not in an area that has really good organic produce available to us and also at a cost that is affordable to us. I'm not opposed to spending money to get good quality food for my family but sometimes it's just so overly pricey that I just can't justify it so I have to go elsewhere to find it and Gudrun is an amazing resource for organic produce, she has helped me do my chili sauce every year–physically help me as well as provided some of the produce for me and it's a really fun time. It's fun to do these things not just by yourself but in the company of friends, good memory making time and I thoroughly enjoyed doing that not only does she help, but Austin the Mountain Boy has been a huge help and we have had so much fun over the years listening to our favorite music, listening to podcasts, just having some really great in-depth conversation. So being able to spend quality time with your family while you're learning how to do these things is another great thing to do and so much today everybody's heading in different directions, kids are in front of all of their electronics and they're missing out on learning and honestly I feel that both the parents and the children are missing out on that great quality time because that's something that I just-I live for, I thrive for; it's really fulfilling to me to be able to spend time with my son. So I encourage you to get out with your children, if you have U-picked farms available to you–I used to take my kids out and we pick blueberries and strawberries and we go to the pumpkin patch in the fall. Those are just good memory making moments, good traditions to start and I want to encourage you to get out and do those things with your family but not only the time spent together but the amount of bounty that you can put on your shelves and the beautiful part of it is you know where your food’s coming from, you know where it came out of the ground and you know how it was processed, you know what was put in it and that in and of itself is very huge for me also. So we do all of our jams and jellies in varying kinds whatever we can get our hands on each year; I love our apple butter and we had not done that for a couple years and we are out and we are thoroughly missing that good taste from home-that's grandma's recipe and it's just amazing and it's makes your house smell so incredible when you're doing it. And we also do our chili sauce and we do pickles, we do carrots, I would love to do green beans and there's nothing better than freshly canned green beans, pulling them off the shelf and cherries-bean cherries. So there's a lot of available and they all start coming into season, right now being cherries, it will be available and we did some things with strawberries, it's just really nice to have those things in the winter months. We eat a lot of venison and a lot of elk and it's nice to be able to sweeten those dishes up and gives a variety, so I often add pear jelly to my–either my venison or my elk while it's cooking up in the frying pan or I will cook it all day in a pear jelly like broth and it just smells and tastes so incredible. So there's so many things you can do that add variety to your diet, not only in the spring months but it carries through to the winter months for you and for us living the way we do that's really important it gives us a sweet treat. Jellies can be used for all kinds of things; I'll use my jellies and make a pastry and spread my homemade jellies all around the pastry and bake it up for something sweet you know, so there's so many things you can do. You can also make up a pie filling and can it and then just pull it out put it in your pies shell and bake up your pie whenever, you know we did that a lot in the winter months too and you can top a cake with fruit jellies and jams so, so many wonderful good things you can do but it all requires you to take the time this time of year and get out there and gather the fruits and vegetables and take the time to can them. I just wanted to spend the time today and share some of those ideas with you, last week I talked about yard selling and if you're new to canning, I thoroughly encourage you to get out look for canning jars and you can oftentimes find canners as well and canners are a good thing to get at a yard sale but it requires you to double check them and make sure that they're running optimally and oftentimes you can do that in your county, they will have an exchange office where you can go and many of them out here will check your pressure gauges and they will check over your canner and be sure that it's working well and everything's in order. The thing is to, is you want to double check maybe while you're at yard sale when you found a canner. Use your smart phone and get online and just make sure you can still get parts for that particular canner or just in case, because if you can't sometimes it's not worth the investment but a lot of the canners you can get new seals and new pressure gauges for them. So it's certainly worth the investment sometimes of a couple dollars or cents for a nice big canner that you just need to invest a couple more dollars until to get it up and running. But also on Amazon you can find some great canning equipment that is inexpensive and you can go to that directly by going to trayerwilderness.com/canning and you'll find a lot of the different canners available there as well as the jars and the funnels and different things you need but if you can find those little things at a yard sale and start your collection off, that's a great way to do it, great way to get started and the jars too because oftentimes older people will choose to retire their canning equipment because it's just become too much for them to do or they’re by themselves and they don't wish to preserve as much food, so it's really sometimes a very nice find. So I encourage you to check that out. And if you are looking for varying recipes for your canning needs, you can find those-some of those in our Trayer Wilderness Cookbooks, which you can find on Amazon also and you can go there simply by going to trayerwilderness.com/tammytrayer. I'll take you to my author page on Amazon and you'll see my other books there as well. But my cookbook has some of our favorite recipes in there; believe my Hot Mustard recipe is in there, our Chili Sauce recipe is in there, so that is a good place to start with simple instructions and I encourage you to check out my dear friend Melissa K Norris, she offers a great canning class and you can find her in two locations: you can find her by going to trayerwilderness.com/canningclass or you can also go to trayerwildernessacademy.com which will be the future home of our traditional classes and skills and they will be opening and available to you in August of this year, but Melissa has also shared her classes at our academy so you can go there now and add yourself to our waiting list so that you are some of the first to know when our doors are opening and by doing that now you are guaranteed a free month membership so that you can check it out. So I encourage you to go to trayerwildernessacademy.com and get yourself signed up there because we want to have all kinds of classes available to you. The Mountain Man has done a Blacksmithing 101, as well as a full-fledged trapping video. He is also going to be offering a Saw Maintenance and Tree Felling class for those of you that are new to either of those and that will include some of the sharpening skills you need to work with a chainsaw and possibly some of the older saws and I will be doing some from Scratch Cooking and some Gluten free and Dairy free cooking, sock knitting as well as a Getting Organized class and it will be constantly growing. We will be fermenting and canning and showing you how to do all the traditional skills that we do on our Homestead which would also include a class on learning how to hunt and all the steps you need to take from field to table, as far as butchering and field dressing and also even brain tanning your hides because we use everything from the animals when we are hunting. So there are many options and many things going to be available and the Academy will be constantly growing. So I just wanted to share that with you today but think about all the things that are available to you in your surroundings to harvest and forage and if you are uncertain of berries or plants I highly encourage you to check with somebody locally that you can gain new knowledge and information from so that you are being certain you are picking the proper fruits and vegetables and plants. That can be a very scary thing, so there are many people locally that are always willing to share their knowledge especially if you are showing great interest. So and often times at the County Exchange office again there are classes available, sometimes at the local colleges too there are classes available oftentimes free that will enable you to learn such things. So if you're not familiar with a Raspberry or a Huckleberry or an Elderberry that you are educating yourself properly before you are going out and consuming anything because berries are a scary thing, there are many poisonous berries out there. So I just want to put that out there as a disclaimer and a caution to you so that you are careful but it's a wonderful thing to do and for those of you that are afraid of canning I encourage you to take a class because Canning is such a valuable, valuable skill and it's not near as scariest so many people make it out to be, once you do it you will be so hooked and so addicted. So I encourage you to learn those skills and be fearless. That's what I wanted to share today, I wish you a great week and I will see you again next Friday and I look forward to connecting with you next week, till then God bless. Podcast #148: You Need A Budget Jun 16, 2017
    Show notes

June 16th, 2017: In today’s show I discuss the importance of a working budget for your home or homestead. Without a real good working budget, you really have no solid footing and will always be guessing and getting further in the hole. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show where we’re homesteading traditionally 100% off grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow, here's your host Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hey everyone, welcome. So glad to have you joining me today and I wanted to thank all of you that have been reaching out and expressing how grateful you are that I am back. I'm so glad to be back and I'm thankful to have you listening and glad to hear that I am providing you with resources that are helpful to you and today I thought we would really talk about one that I feel should be like the center of everybody's life and that is having a budget and–it’s kind of sad and today's day and age everybody has credit cards and revolving credit and lines of credit and their houses are mortgaged and its just so much credit and it is so much debt. It is what's being seen and it's truly just hard to exist in that situation–it's so overwhelming and it really takes its toll and people don't even realize it and that's the struggle that I see and the thing that happens is, you–nobody really knows what their extreme debt level really is because they just keep switching from one credit card to the next. And I have to say we were in that scenario for quite a while just because of circumstances but it's not a good place to be and it's not a place to be if you want to get ahead. You know we were building our homestead and things were breaking and we needed to get them repaired in order to move forward, our vehicles were breaking down, without our vehicles we couldn't go anywhere, we couldn't work. So you know you keep investing money and putting more debt on your shoulders and we were all guilty of it. But it's a real refreshing feeling when you finally have a handle on your debt and you know where you stand, you know what your level of debt is regardless how overwhelming it is, you have that final number. And now the thing is to get yourself out of that position you put yourself in and learning–you know we live very frugally, so our needs are so much less than the average person. But you know unfortunately, our equipment often is more pricey. So you know when our backhoe goes down, we have much more pricey repairs than a lawn mower you know. So It's just–the thing is you've got to be aware and you've got to pay attention to where your debt level is you're spending and how frugal you are. You know a lot of people are out purchasing things not out of necessity, not out of need but out of want and it's really easy to do when you go in the stores today. You know I see it when we walk into the stores, you know we aren't shoppers but when we go to the big cities and we hit Walmart or something like that and you see all the big sales and all the new items and you know the new the new slow cooker and the new deep fryer, the new cooking pans that are really pretty and attractive but the thing is I already have all that stuff, so why buy the latest and greatest. You know in some cases it might help you but typically not and you're just getting an additional piece in your kitchen that you've already got, so you're adding clutter which clutter is a whole other ballgame and that in and of itself adds lot of stress and weight on your shoulders too because people don't realize living in a cluttered space is so very overwhelming. So I want to break it out today and give you some resources that will help you to get yourself on track and maybe open your eyes to the fact that you are in a bad situation but you can very easily turn it around and start moving in a more positive direction if you start to be aware–and sometimes it's hard to get your others-your other party, your spouse whether your husband or wife or even your partners you know involved and aware you know-oftentimes the weight of finances is on one person shoulder but in reality it's really important that that weight is on everybody's shoulders-that everybody is aware and that everybody is playing on the same playing field because if you're both not on the same page you’ll never going to get out of the spot and you're going to end up on a treadmill and just keep racing and basically chasing yourself. So it's hard to get your spouse on board sometimes but it's a necessity, they've got to be willing to understand and also accept the responsibility that they have helped to put you there. So that's why I want to talk about this today because really you know God is in the forefront of our home and our lives and my husband is the next in line and myself and then my children. But in that mix of things, the budget needs to be in there and it needs to be something that is discussed and it's important to have your children involved in some of your discussions, they need to be aware that it's important to have a budget and that money just doesn't come off of a piece of plastic because we're not helping our children any. As a matter of fact I grew up where money wasn't really talked about, not in a way of how to control it or how to handle it or how to spend it and I got my first car and I got my first credit card and it was great to have that mobility and it was great to have something to put my gas on but the same time it started me out on a really bad foot in my opinion and you know I never was taught to budget my money, I was never taught to handle my money and I was never really taught to deal with the checkbook. You know I guess I just assumed that was things I was learning in school. But that's not the case, our children need to see that first and foremost and in a really realistic way. You know by seeing it firsthand how you deal with your money is something that can be a very good lesson for your children and so in your family the dynamics making a really big difference having God first in our life it is really balancing for us and he leads the way so it's the way as far as we're concerned that it should be. And in addition to that with our budgeting, the first thing that we consider always on top of anything else is tithing and I had shared-my husband and I shared a video on some of the miracles on our homestead and in all honesty those miracles started happening when we started being really visible once we started tithing above anything else and making that the first thing that we do with our money when it comes in. And it's what we're called to do and when you do that it's been really amazing, I mean there have been times where the only money I had was a $100 and I needed that for a bill in two days but we were going to church and I tithed that money and I was trusting in God too and knowing that he would provide for that bill that I had do and you know we've never had to worry. When you put that much trust in God, it's amazing the results. Now I know some of you may not be Christians or faithful people but stay with me because having a budget is really important this is how we do things and this is why I'm sharing it with you this is what works for us. Now–so that is one, that is the first thing we do with any money that we receive is that we tithe our money. Now additionally, it's really important that you have a structure of some sort, whether you have a spreadsheet, whether you have a written note. Many people do it differently and I realize that there are certain things that just work better for other people and that doesn't work for everyone else. It took me a good while to find the proper tools that I needed to be able to budget for my family because not only in my budgeting for my family but I am budgeting for four businesses as well. So it can be overwhelming and it can be really hard to keep track of and often times when we hit overwhelm we just don't do anything and that's not good; that's often what happens-it's like deer stuck in headlights. So you know you have to have the right tools, if something is not working for you don't keep trying to use it, find something different. So today I'm going to give you some resources and tools that I feel are very beneficial to you. For starters, Dave Ramsey's program is a phenomenal program his book; The Total Money Make Over, is worth every penny and you can find that by going to trayerwilderness.com/totalmoneymakeover and that will take you directly to his materials. That book is highly recommended and I think every family should read that book because it points things out for both spouses and really makes it clear that it's not something that one person should be doing but that the family should be doing that as a team, as a partner-you’re partners you should be doing this together. So that's a really important part of things but his concepts are very strong and very solid and I highly, highly, recommend them. Now he also does an envelope program and–excuse me. One of the things that you want to check out that will also be helpful tool for you and your preparedness efforts is the preparedness worksheet that we are offering right now. You can go to our website by going to trayerwilderness.com/newsletter and you can sign up for our weekly newsletter. It comes out every Sunday and you will find in there are the downloadable sheets and one of which is a budget. Now that is pretty much going off of Dave Ramsey's budget and his program. So that is a tool that you can start out with Dave Ramsey's book also provides principles that are available to you. So those are the places I highly recommend to start. Now as I said not everything works the same for everybody else, although Dave Ramsey's materials are very solid, I had a really hard time using his budgeting materials because I have so much to keep track of so I did a couple things and I found the perfect set up for myself. One thing is I needed to carry the checkbook registers with me. I had to carry five checkbook registers with me in order to keep everything written in them was very, very, difficult. You know you only have so much space in your bags and I don't like carrying a lot with me. I created a spreadsheet that is a checkbook register and in this spreadsheet I have different sheets in it for each of the businesses and our personal and I can keep track of my checkbook registers digitally or electronically which has been a lifesaving thing for me because on the fly I can enter any transactions, I know exactly what my balance is all the time because what was happening to me I was forgetting to write in receipts, so things are getting screwed up and I don't like paying fees that was happening also because we do overdraft because I forget to write things in and I didn't have the time to go back and balance the check books because I'm so busy. So it’s really a rough thing and I had to find a balance in that and I know there's so many other people that are suffering from that. In that spreadsheet I also have the main sheet being an overview. So I know what my balances are when just by looking at the one sheet of all my accounts. And in addition to that, at the back of my accounts or of my worksheet spreadsheet, I have information on there that keeps track of yearly payments and different things in there and that's how I was initially keeping track of that. You know you took the yearly things I need to keep track of for the businesses, for personal if I had automatic withdraws coming out of any of my accounts I had them noted and which accounts they were and then the amount, so I had that all in there but it was still cumbersome for me to keep track of things that way. So I found another program that has been an absolute lifesaver to me and it's a very inexpensive program, Dave Ramsey talks about Fresh Books, I tried that it just didn't work for me. I used Quick Books for our businesses for our accounting and our tax purposes but to really keep track of our budgets. I started using a program called YNAB and it stands for You Need A Budget. You can go to their program and get a 34 day trial period with them by using this link it's trayerwilderness.com/YNAB – You need a budget. I highly recommend that you go there and try the program out and then to continue on with the program after the trial period it's like 4.99 a month it is the best money I have ever spent for my family because I don't know–I no longer have to keep track of my yearly and monthly expenditures in a spreadsheet, I can do that in each of my budgets. I can go into each of my budgets one for personal, my businesses and I can tell exactly what to do every month I can and I can budget out extra things and then I can see the reporting of how I did each month budgeting. You know did I go over? Where did I go over? How did we go over? You know it's really important to be able to see what you're spending and that's the thing that most people don't do. I guess you do have a credit card you just keep jamming stuff on there, you never really go back and evaluate things, you never see where you're spending too much, you never see how frivolously your spending because you're really not analyzing it. Well if you have a budget that is right in your face all the time and that is what you base your spending off, Dave Ramsey's spends through envelopes. He puts–has you put so much money in an envelope for your food, for your electric, for whatever your expenditures are and when that money is gone that's it and this you need a budget that works very similarly without the envelopes per se but I still use the envelopes. But it is in my face budgeting program that has saved us so greatly and has helped us greatly with our medical expenditures and on medical debt it has really helped us get a handle on things and really see things in the big picture. Like I said, it's really hard but what you need to sit down and really figure out what your level of debt is. It's overwhelming, it may make you cry, it may make you mad but you need to see it, and you need to be aware that you can't keep pushing it off and you can't keep living as if it doesn't matter, it really does and I know that's how most people are living today. And it will by budgeting and by having a handle on things, the weight on your shoulders will be removed so much and for those of you that are handling the accounting things and the finances by yourself, when you get both parties involved it makes such a huge difference and that weight also is something that is removed from you as well. Now as a closing thought for you folks, in addition to these resources that I have given you, there is one other resource that I think that should be listened to by every family and not just the parents but the children too. Joe McGee Ministries, Fighting For Families, is an amazing program and he talks about a lot like 90% about finances and financial struggles and financial fighting and how to get a handle on your finances. He also talks about raising children and balance in your lives and it is just a very wh…

Podcast #147: Are You Too Old To Live Off-Grid? Jun 09, 2017
    Show notes

June 8th, 2017: In today’s show I share with you one of the top concerns and questions we get from our audience, “Are We Too Old To Live Off-Grid?” This is a concern for many wishing to take on homesteading or off-grid living! Listen in and see what is shared…

For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast:

You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes.

Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio, show where we’re homesteading traditionally 100% off grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow, here's your host Tammy Trayer.

Tammy: Hey guys, Tammy Trayer-trayerwilderness.com. Hoping you guys are doing good today and enjoying this beautiful day, it's always a beautiful day regardless what the weather is. It’s all what you make it. Today we're going to talk about–this is before I stir the pot here-this is one of the most common questions we get on our website and on our social media and so forth is, “Am I too old to live off-grid? And my answer to that right off the bat is absolutely not. Never are you too old to embrace a dream or live a self sustaining lifestyle and there's nothing stopping you from living off grid based on your age. So let's cover that because in my book “How To Embrace an Off-Grid Lifestyle”- you can find that on Amazon and you can also find my other books by going to trayerwilderness.com/Tammy Trayer . So you can go on there check out the other books I have-but my “How To Embrace an Off-Grid Lifestyle” went live in January of this year 2017 on my birthday actually which was a goal and a met goal, so was excited about that. But in Chapter five is where I really talk about this subject and really, really try to cover things because there's such a misconception of off grid living and this applies to people that want a homestead to, you're never too old to homestead it's all about how you wish to embrace it. You could be 75 and get a couple chickens and live in a on a small little piece of acreage and enjoy your life and live self sufficiently and be very content, It's all how you go about it. Let me explain; I see living off the grid what that means, is that you are not connected to the power grid. You are either pulling in power from another source typically alternative energy or you don't have any power at all which would ultimately be our goal just because-just because we can. But right now we are powering our home with solar power. So the sun provides the energy in the sun on our panels, our panels come into the house and they go through a charge controller and that way if the batteries are already full, It protects the batteries and diverts the energy and once it's in the batteries it goes from the batteries to an inverter which inverts your D.C. power-your battery power is D.C. into A.C. current and goes into your breaker box which is no different than what the grid does. The grid provides AC power to your breaker box as well into your home.

So the next question many people have is, “How do you–what happens when the sun goes down?” Well, when the sun's out it’s power my batteries so at night we live off of battery power and we're frugal we choose to be frugal because if your batteries go low you either need Sunder recharge or a generator and if there's no sun you need the generator and the generator takes fuel we just try to be very frugal and eliminate expenses for ourselves and that it's all up to you how you wish to live. If you want to live like you do now on the grid be prepared that you'll probably have to run the generator more often and then we do. But we don't have a lot of the modern day power appliances and at night we’re very simplistic-one light, everybody in the same room, maybe two lights two different rooms but that's max and we don't really do anything that requires power in the evening. So we read books, YouTube, play games, sleep because we're exhausted from all the work we do but the thing is there's a couple things that would deter somebody from living off the grid the way we do. We're out pretty far, I mean we are–we chose to live very traditionally. So we can, we ferment, we harvest our meat, we butcher our meat and we do everything ourselves so depending on your age and what the tasks are, that can get a little cumbersome and a little difficult. But the other thing that is something to consider, is that you can still live the life and maybe just get people to help you. Like for example my son-we have our wood heat and my son cuts up firewood and sells it in the winter months and you know so he delivers the wood and he just unloads it or he can deliver the wood and stack it you know, so there's opportunities out there for you to do some things yourself and others you could pay somebody to do as you age. Now for example living off the grid means that you aren't on the power grid, you’re using other power sources. So suppose you work the nine to five job but you would love to try to be a little bit more green and you go today work, you come home-your house is powered by solar and you live a little more frivolously and you know don't mind paying extra for the generator if you want to come home and do a load of wash but you're off the grid and you can say that you're off the grid and that's one way of living an off-grid lifestyle-you don't have to step back in time and change anything necessarily. That's where the big misconception comes in as people think that off-grid people are dirty uneducated and have less because we don't have the power but we really do, seven years we've been without power twice and we still had power-we just didn't have Sun Power because a cable got snapped by a deer and a breaker went and we were down two days till we got replacements but we still had generator and battery power, so we were still never without power for seven years and that's not something that most people can say on the grid. So it's definitely a nice way to go.

Now the other way you could do off grid living is you could embrace living with solar power, wind power and do a little bit more yourself. You know the first example I gave-they have firewood delivered, they buy their meat at the butcher shop, they use all today's resources and didn't do a whole lot. Example number two, you live off grid on a homestead have a couple chickens, husband still works off site and he is providing and mom stay at home with the kids and they're trying to do a little bit more themselves to cut corners and save money and that's a great way to go so you're not fully traditional but you're still tapping into it. And then you have people like us who dive in and go into the whole nine yards, we really prefer to live it as extremely traditionally as we can and I guess that at some point we'd really like to cut our ties with electrical power and just live back in the woods somewhere. So you know everybody has their own desires but you're never too old to embrace this. A solar system requires that you add distilled water to the batteries every month and just check the battery levels that's pretty much it. You can run an equalization which equals out your batteries but that's something your system does, it's not something you personally have to do. So all you have to do is monitor your batteries and take care of them, is not complicated and how you embrace that is up to you, you don't have to live a full all out little house on the prairie lifestyle if you don't want to and if you're already up there in age and you want to embrace this but you're concerned, you know the things to consider in my opinion are where you're located and also your health needs and they kind of can go hand in hand. If you're too far out and you have health concerns you certainly don't want to stay real far out as you age because things get really complicated in getting you the help you need if you need help. So there's no reason why you can't off grid somewhere closer to town, you know you're not necessarily–you don't have to go out into the middle of nowhere into the wilderness to live an off grid lifestyle. You can live it from anywhere, keep that in mind. Health issues are a big thing, we had two major health situations last year. My husband stopped breathing eight times before the ambulance came which was very scary and we're up pretty far and most people don't know where we live, thankfully the people that were driving the ambulance and the Deputy that was leading the way on the how to get here and our son was able to open the gate but the E.M.T. was having a hard time getting an I.V. in my husband when they did get here. So even with good health and just freaky situations, bad things can go so it's up to you-it's up to you how you want to live, it's up to you how you decide to live, it's up to you if you want to risk those things. We're willing to risk this things because we love being out and you know we can live in a town it's just not our makeup. You know to us that's a risk we're willing to take you have to weigh that. Now if you need close access to doctors to be honest in our location we’re at least an hour if not two hours to specialists and so forth so that's a pretty substantial distance. We’re 45 minutes from regular doctors and Community Hospital. We prefer to go to the further hospitals but these are things to consider. So if you've got health issues then you need medical attention often you're not going to want to live real far away from those things unless that's something you are willing to risk and to deal with. But when people ask if they're too old, absolutely not, absolutely not and I know a woman who lives up in between here and Banners Berry and she and her husband purchased the piece of property and shortly after they purchased that property he passed on and she's been running that place by herself ever since and she's in her 70's and certainly a slowdown but you don't–that doesn't mean you have to keep doing the exhaustive work either, you can change how you start out. If you start out gangbusters like we are, doing everything traditionally and as you age step it back, there's a lot of different ways you can do this and embracing a self-sufficient life, homesteading or off grid life so rewarding. And if it's a dream and you don't ever take the chance to accomplish it you live with regret. So there's lots of unique ways that you can embrace such a lifestyle and a lot of people get really concerned with the cost of alternative energy and I will say that the cost has definitely gone down since we have purchased our equipment seven years ago and five years ago our equipment was paid for-in calculating what we were paying in electric prior to living this way everything was paid for on our fifth year here. So I said that back previously-but it was our fifth year here. So we've been having no electric bill or payment any kind for two years. The upfront costs can be costly but there's also credits available for your taxes and you just had to be very careful with the-you know and checking with your states and your Municipalities. You know example Florida has some heavy laws on off grid living and solar and alternative energy living which is crazy to me because you know it's cleaner and it's part of our freedom and our choice but it's government control wanting to control and that they can gain something off of our electric. But our ancestors live with no power at all and I want to live that way, this is my desire and I really feel we should fight for it; because it doesn’t make two cents for the day.

But I really encourage you to really think about it then if you have questions we do consulting on the side as well at trayerwilderness—[chuckles], I don't know if you can hear but there's an owl two of them, some owls talking right now. Anyway I'm sorry, I'm walking with my dogs today-this is my time for me. Anyway I really encourage you to consider-we do have consulting available to you where you can get unlimited e-mail conversations for a month definitely check that out on our website there's a consulting tab, would love to help you further and help you to set things up and just to put more thought into it because embracing dreams is huge and being able to live the life you desire and you want to live it's so important. I just want to encourage you to give that some thought today but you're never too old never ever, ever, ever, ever to old in my eyes. Podcast #146: How To Recharge Your Batteries Jun 02, 2017
    Show notes

June 2nd, 2017: In today’s show I talk to you about How To Recharge Your Batteries. It is important to take good care of ourselves and to not allow ourselves to get run down. It is also important to do fun things and take time away from all your work to PLAY! To be our best selves we can be, we need to take recharge ourselves. For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast: You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes. Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio, where we are homesteading traditionally 100% off-grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow. Here's your host, Tammy Trayer. Tammy: Hey everyone, I’m glad to have you joining me, this is Tammy Trayer you can find my family and I at trayerwilderness.com. Today we're going to talk about how to recharge your batteries as a parent and as a spouse. We just passed Mother's Day and we’re coming up on Father's Day and both parties need to be celebrated. Either position is an easy one and struggle is we are running that rat race, work in our day jobs, volunteering and getting the kids here and forget to take time out of the week for you and your spouse, you don't have the quality time you want with your kids, and you just start to hit ban out, you have ban out, you start to let those negative voices, that you share with yourself start affecting you and we all go through it. I know I'm not singled out and I hope you feel better knowing you're not alone because it just happens you know. Kids might get tudy, you and your spouse might have a tiff. You know all those things kind of make you feel lesser, inadequate or not a good mom and not a good wife and not a good husband and we go through that negative talk and for starters that's the first thing you've got to curb. And for those of you that have never paid attention to that, these can be really eye opening for you because we're all guilty of it and we're all super good at it and you know you guys know I'm a Christian-that's the enemy in my opinion, digging in and using those negative words to dig–to allow it to degrade ourselves and to degrade our souls and–just put us in a weird spot and we all end up there despite how hard we try to be positive and happy and everything to go right these always never go that way and that's reality. You go through valleys, you go through rough days, you have good days-you know so how do you find that balance and how do you recharge your batteries? For many people that can be a real struggle, I feel kind of blessed because I have good friends, I have good family, I have good spiritual advisers, I have my Bible and I have God and those things really–you know when you really learn how to use some tools and there's nothing wrong with leaning on a friend or a spouse you also were there for we're supposed to be helpmeet and great that men are fixers, so sometimes when you share your struggle with the men, they get a little bit upset because they can't fix it or they try to fix it and you didn't want to fix it you just wanted to listen right? Well got to give him credit for trying to fix it; he's trying to help you but that's his way of doing it. So when you decide to share something with your spouse that's really bothering you, you know maybe you can say to them you know I'm sharing this with you, I know you can't fix it and I don't expect you to mileage kind of just looking for you to listen because sometimes just having that listening ear can be so huge. You know my Mountain boy has been my listening ear. Many times we walk all the time and you know sometimes my dogs, when you're home by yourself and just feeling a little disheveled, you know I'm not the only one. I know other people talk to their animals right? [chuckles]. Anyway, it's just important to express ourselves, it's important to get these things off of our chest, out of our system and by expressing it you're depleting it, you're getting rid of it and oftentimes that's just what you need to do. But it's a process and it’s learning these things. So first of all, if you hear negative talk coming out of your mouth, you know it could be anything, it could be: I'm not a good wife, I'm not a good mom, I look fat, whatever it is, we're all guilty of it, we all have our thing we all have things that bother us about ourselves and that's a process too of becoming whole with ourselves up to a point that we are finding happiness in ourselves and basically seeing ourselves the way God sees us and that's really important and getting rid of that negative talk is huge. That negative talk-you know as soon as you hear it, reverse it turn it around. You know I'm a bad mom, no really I'm not you know Johnny was misbehaving I did what I needed to do he'll love me later and he'll be a better person for it you know. You got a–you got to want to turn these things around because those negative words can be really rough on you and will really put you in bad places. Having a good friend to confide in and that's just expressing yourself. One thing I do want to encourage you folks though is, it's really important not to talk about your spouse you know we all go through rough spots. If you have somebody that you can talk to that you fully trust and you are having a situation and you need somebody to talk to about it, that's good but be careful who you talk to, don't go sharing information-personal information to everybody because one of the things you want to do when you're in your life and finding balance and recharging your batteries for you and your spouse is to not plant negative seeds. You know rumors get started, bad things get spoken, this is not a good way to do things. You know when my husband and I have a struggle-and don't get me wrong we live an awesome life but we have struggles, we're no different than you and when we do, we have a couple of rules one, we don't go to bed angry, we don't leave the house angry and we talk about it and that may mean that we might need to cool down or both need to walk away regroup ourselves and then go have a conversation. My thoughts are, when I have a problem with my spouse my husband, the best thing I can do is talk to him about it. And for those of you out there that could you know–if you were in an abusive situation or something is really wrong in your relationship and you are in danger or your children are in danger, please that's a whole different whole story, whole different ballgame and if you are in this situation I thoroughly encourage you to talk to somebody and really seek help if that's the case. But under normal circumstances, you don't want to be badmouthing your spouse and you want to be there to help me, you want to lift them, you want to love them, you want to encourage them. There's nothing worse in this life than being discouraged by the person you live with and not feeling loved. So in your efforts to find balance, I certainly hope that you have a date night every week, every other week once a month no less than that. You spend time just you and your spouse, if you have children – no children, if you don't have children – no work, no iPhones, no nothing. Just spend time with your spouse, doing something you both enjoy and you might need to take turns, because maybe what he likes to do, you don't like to do and maybe what you like to do he doesn't like to do. But you've got to find even and fair playing ground and take turns to feed each other's batteries to give each other Joy. You know it's–we all require different things to nurture us and that's basically what it boils down to when we're recharging our batteries. Is refilling our joy in our lives and refilling our reservoirs with things that we need and we're the only ones that can really establish that and you might need to sit down and talk to your spouse about it and figure out what it is that you both need. And you know sitting down having those conversations you can learn so much and you know when you're in the high romance of a relationship and then you get married, you know if things do change and it doesn't have to be for the worse, you're going to change, you're going to start to learn each other, you're going to start to realize things but that's where you guys have the opportunity to grow together and in order to do that, you need to both be very open and understanding with each other and-it's a process. But for me finding my balance is taking time also in God's Word. I do that every day because without it I feel really disconnected and it just-it feeds me, it feeds my soul and it keeps me connected where I need to be connected and that's how I start my day. So that is one way, but don't get me wrong. I've had those days where the week has just been hideous and I do that every day and I feel connected and I feel good but I just still feel out of sorts and often times in my mind I feel that's spiritual warfare; that's the enemy trying to get in and just deplete our positive nature and–so I focus really hard when I'm in those modes and doesn't happen often but it does happen. You know I'll go out for a walk, I’ll go ride my bike. Sometimes for people a good cry, you know you've got a lot of stress, you got a lot going on you're getting hit left and right from all kinds of things, kids are acting up, it’s full moon, schools calling and you know you just–cars breaking down, you get all the stuff, it's tough and we're human. It's our human nature and it's okay to break it, it’s okay to fall apart. Cry, get it out of your system and oftentimes you'll find when you do that, you pull yourself back together-you just need to release it all. So if you can't–if you can’t–if you want somebody to talk to, you know hey, e-mail me survive@trayerwilderness.com. We all need a friend, we all need that somebody sometimes and you know there's ways to handle it: Praying-having open communication with God, communicating with our spouses is so important and sometimes if the kids are giving you a rough time, the best thing for you and for them is to just step away, step away, clear your head–I find sometimes when my Mountain boy used to have struggles we were homeschooling, so we just get up, he did not like it because he liked to stay focus on a school work but he wasn't being productive, he wasn't doing-he just wasn't helping himself in any way. It was just not a good situation get–up we're going for a walk by the end of the walk we'd be laughing and carrying on go back and what he was struggling on, amazingly enough it was not a struggle, it's just we all have those moments. So we have to–something else you got to keep in mind is, you've got to give each other grace. We all have rough days, we all have rough moments, sometimes we just need space, sometimes we just need grace that you're not you know already beat myself up don't help me kind of thing you know and give each other grace when you have those bad moments. So you need some time you know and I'm really open with my family, you know look I'm not having a good day or more so if anything, it's been-I'm not feeling good today. You know but thankfully that's gone so you know being vocal expressing yourself and taking the time for yourself you know, one of the things that has been an amazing blessing for me since I got sick is that, I would take time each week and soak in the tub. I was blessed by my dear friend Deanna and Rose who gifted me with a bath tab when I came back from my surgery because I needed to soak is part of my protocol. And you know that has been such a blessing to me to just take that time out and just relax. And sometimes I found that the best thing for me to do is just camp out there for a little while because the soon as I get up and get out of there, I got other chores to do and I'm going to have the demands of my family. So I've learned to cater to myself and some days I need to be in there a little longer other days I don't. But finding that place and those things you can do that will help rejuvenate you. You know, if there were things you and your husband did when you were dating that gave you great joy and you're not doing them now, why not? Enjoy life and enjoy each other. This was just really strong in my heart for Mother's Day and I thought with us being in between both, I'm going to share this because it's not just limited to one or the other. Men and women we both struggle, some men are stay at home moms, others are you know, out working in the nine to five you know so just varies but we've got a mix of society today and it's just really important that we find time in this hustle bustle and this craziness to really find peace and just take time for ourselves because if you don't, you know you're not going to–you're not going to be in a good way, you need to rejuvenate your batteries and fill yourself with joy and find those things that really give you meaning. You know something that we do every week, so every Wednesday night devotion and sometimes we'll play games that night, it’s got a little crazy now with summer hitting us and some of the chores we have to do. But our Sunday is our day of rest and I mean that. We don't do anything, we don't work, we go to church or we have church at home depending on the circumstances, we eat good meals, we spend time together and rare days we play game-board games. On Saturdays we might be out picking around mushrooms whatever. But we spend time together and that day is such a joy to me, to have that date-regroup myself before another crazy week starts. We all have demands and I have another podcast available that is talking about how to avoid overwhelm and I kind of feel the two of these go together. You know it's really important for you to be able to balance things out in your life and not over commit things; to try to help you rejuvenate and recharge your batteries. Recharging your batteries with your spouse can be a lot of different things. My husband and I used to get out on my motorcycle and we haven't had that privilege now and we both missed it-I can't tell you how. So you know it's on our list of future things that something that we would like to do, but for right now we get out, we go for walks and hike and just spend time together. So if there were things you did previously that you can't do now you know find something else and put that on your-you know To Do List, the future things that you want to do together. So there are so many things you can do but communication is huge and taking care of yourself because if you're not good and you're not happy, you can't be your best self for everybody else either. So it's just find a balance folks and just taking time to rejuvenate those batteries and that includes your children too because you know we thrive us moms and even new dads to spend time with those kids and to have more quality time with them. So instead of sitting and watching a movie or playing a video game you do something quality that you actually hold a conversation. My son and I walk a lot, we ride bike-right now I'm in drive and back and forth to his job because of the shuffle and vehicles –So I take that time to talk to him and spend time with h…

Podcast #145: How To Avoid Overwhelm May 26, 2017
    Show notes

May 26th, 2017: In today’s show I felt it was important to talk about “How To Avoid Overwhelm”. This is not just for homesteaders or off-griders, but anyone living life!

For those of you that are unable to stream podcasts or would rather have the opportunity to read, below you will find the transcription of today's podcast:

You're listening to the Mountain Woman radio show which can be found on our website at trayerwilderness.com and also on iTunes.

Welcome to the Mountain Woman radio show, where we are homesteading traditionally 100% off-grid today and offering preparedness and survival tips for tomorrow. Here's your host Tammy Trayer.

Tammy: Hi guys, Tammy Trayer, trayerwilderness.com. Get a little feedback here–there we go. I hope you guys are all doing well today, such diverse weather, I imagine some of you are planting your garden for others of you are just about ready to reap some harvest, we've got snow last week. So pretty crazy, pretty crazy weather but I am out right now walking the dog so hopefully there's a lot of feedback and a lot of noise come in but we’re out walking, it is gorgeous, we are getting spoiled here and there by some really nice days-I’m actually out here in a tank top so go figure. Snow last week, tank top today now it's so crazy.

But I wanted to talk to you today about how to avoid overwhelm. it's not just something that happens to homesteaders or people that live off grid it's global and with the pace of today's world, everybody is moving at such a clip. And I'm actually speaking to you today on this because my last three weeks have been beyond insane and a little of which-okay a lot of which I couldn't really control and I had a kind of just roll with. I am a web designer by trade, I am a writer and radio show host by passion and I am the office staff of a construction business out of necessity because my husband's business is just taking off which is an awesome, awesome thing and we are really excited about it. Many of you know our story with my healing process and surgery and no income for six and a half months last year so to be able to turn things around and God just continues to bless us so it's really awesome. And I wanted to share with you how to avoid the overwhelm because so many of us are organization freaks and multitaskers, and people pleasers, and we want our kids to get to everything and to be able to do everything and have opportunities and we volunteer and we don't know how to say no-I've actually overcome that one but it wasn't an easy thing. And even when I guard my schedule which I do very heavily now, because it became a necessity for me to do that when I was sick and really learned different pace. So to know the importance of that pace and having to race like a lunatic the last three weeks it's kind of scary because I don't want to get back in that rat race and I don't I want to end up in that pace. But how do you do it? How do you avoid the overwhelm? How do you not over commit and how do you learn to say no? So that’s why I thought we would talk about today.

Learning to say no is really a very difficult thing really because it's stems from fear. And fear is a killer, fear is from the enemy, fear is what holds us back, fear keeps us from enjoying life's best pleasures. So with that being said, how do you do it? Well you need to learn to be strategic and you need to be comfortable in your skin and be comfortable in learning to say when someone asks you, “Can you do this for me?” You need to learn to say, “I would love to.” “Let me check my schedule and I'll get back to you.” Period end of story. And then disengage if you can because we're all really manipulated by pressure and if you're new to learning to say no, it can be very difficult and you feel guilty, but you shouldn't feel guilty. Now by walking away, and by saying those few simple words, let me check my schedule and I'll get back to you, you give yourself three opportunities. One, that you can totally walk away and you can say no. Message back my schedule is full, sorry I can't do that. Two, you can let them know that you'd really like to do but your schedule is really full, is there another opportunity some other time? Or you can give yourself time to really think about it and maybe you would like to do it, maybe it is something that you definitely want to commit to. But you gave yourself a chance to think about it, to pray about it, to talk to your spouse about it-you know so you've given yourself a freedom that most of you don't know because we're so quick to say yes and that was one of my biggest fault because I'm a people pleaser, I love helping other people and it was just something that I was so used to doing. So when you learn that one, that all in of itself will help you to learn to commit your schedule to you, your family, your needs, their needs and keep you from overcommitting that is huge. Now organization is something else that's really, really, important in my opinion and that's not something that everybody is gifted with. Praise the Lord I am right in really deep trouble but I am very organized and almost to a degree that I'm you know-however, I know that there's many people out there that struggle, they try so hard to be organized and they have a notebook and they have a planner and they have apps on their phone and then they hit overwhelm there because they don't know how to keep track of it all and where is the best place to do it. So the thing, is you got to find the one thing that really helps you to keep track of everybody schedule. Because if you're like me, if you're a mom-I keep track of my schedule, I keep track of my son schedule, my husband’s schedule, three businesses and who knows what else. So there's always things to keep track of and in each business there's a multitude of different levels of things to keep track of. So finding that happy place of organization is really important and staying focused on it every morning; seven, eight o'clock, I regroup on my schedule and at night before I go to bed I try to do the same what I didn't get done today needs to be transferred to tomorrow and that way I don't miss things, I don't forget things. I also have an organization class that will be available at trayerwildernessacademy.com, so if you haven't signed up there we will be opening doors very soon, I highly recommend it if you're not an organized person because it will help to simplify things for you; that's the biggest thing is people overcomplicate things. When you can keep it simple that's huge. So getting your schedule, keeping it and understanding it, I use something called NOZBE you can go to trayerwilderness.com/nozbe as in boy E. And the best thing I've ever done for myself, I also corporate that with Google calendars, I saw that on my phone. I can see a month at a glance on a regular basis and everything is color coded, so I know what business it is and what person it is. So I know that sounds over complicated but I've got a lot to keep track of so that's what works for me. And the other thing that is my right hand is Evernote, if you have not heard of it or you're not part of it, go to trayerwilderness.com/evernote. There are apps on a lot of the phones, I know my iPhone has a notes app pad but it wasn't very functional. You can search-they have definitely improved it but Evernote is so important for me. When I was sick, one of my biggest struggles was remembering things and my brain staying intact at all times. So if I didn't write it down, I was lost and to have a million sticky notes all over the place, bad business-bad news. So I started using Evernote very, very, seriously and I actually use that with my staff as well so that they can keep in touch and they can see the some of my notes that are of relevance to them. So it's very, very, good software and I highly recommend it. But being organized is key and being able to say no, not letting people attack your schedule and it's hard trust me, I know how hard it is folks but those are the two things that you want to get under wraps.

The other thing is making sure that you’ve set aside time for you. I am out here walking with my dogs right now for two reasons: One, I need it and two, they need it because when they get cooped up for too long they get really rambunctious and really crazy. So I can walk and talk to you and I am recharging my battery, I am detoxing, I am getting sunshine and vitamin D and my dogs are just happy as all get out. So whatever it is that gives you happiness sink into it, ride a bike, walk, exercise, scrapbook. Whatever it is that suits your fancy, make sure you give yourself at least 15 minutes a day if not more. I try really hard to be good to myself because if I am good to myself, I'm good to everybody else; my family, my husband, children you know and that's important to me. I want to be the best me that I can be and good to me as well because when you're tired and worn out and overwhelmed you don't even say nice things to yourself. So consider those things.

Now this is something that is really important to me and may not work for you and may not be important to you but it is my key thing. In the morning before I do anything, I’ll sip my cup of coffee or my herbal tea and I will read my Bible. I will get into the word that like totally rejuvenates me in a different way. It balances me, it makes me feel connected and just feel so different. When I go without that, I feel the difference. So it's really important to give yourself that time and to find those things that works for you and if reading the Bible is something that you're into, I really recommend it every day. Doing that just–can't even explain–I almost feel like I can't put it into words because when I go without I just feel so bland, so stunted, so dysfunctional, so disconnected–that's what I'm looking for-disconnected-I feel disconnected. So you know find the things that work for you. I know for me, part of my overwhelm is that I don't get to spend the quality time with my son that I want to or with my husband because I’m chasing the next tasks, the next chore, the next trip to town. Right now I've been racing to town. As you all know I stay very much that I like to hunker down and I hate leaving the homestead. So for the last three weeks I've been gone just about every day and working on the road which gets very difficult sometimes especially when all your equipment is failing and fighting with you with our financial struggles, my IPhone, my iPad and my laptop all started going at the same time because I haven't had the funding to upgrade them and that too can be a real overwhelm because my laptop is my life, it's my livelihood and I'm down to 13 gigabytes of storage space so I've got to make some adjustments and you know if you're working environment isn't–if you work from home you know having your working environment clean and organized and your equipment working well for you that too can just make life so much easier. I really struggle with clutter because clutter screams at me and requires my attention before other things to which it shouldn't but that's how I'm made up. So I try to keep things organized and neat so that I am fully functional and those things aren't overwhelming me and dragging me down and making me be less or feel less of a productive person.

So those are my thoughts on trying to avoid overwhelm. The other thing too that really goes along with your schedule is having a to-do list and I do that through NOZBE and I also do that through Evernote. You know coordinating sometimes like my big things on my calendar when I have little things I got to do like running to get carburetor cleaner for the Mountain Man and you know that goes on Evernote for the day and those it's like a shopping list. So you know keeping a To Do list is really important. What's also important is not letting it overwhelm you, don't put too much on it or be like I am and I put everything on it but what doesn't get done today gets moved to tomorrow is just it is what it is. You can't do everything, you're not superwoman, you're not Superman as much as we want to try you know you will kill yourself trying. I did, done here-so you know this applies to both men and women it's not just us ladies. You know men go through this too and we all process things differently, our brains look at things very differently.

So these are my biggest tips to you as to what has helped me because I don't like living life feeling like I'm having a panic attack to get everything done and I really see and feel that that's what a lot of people are doing today and you really need to step back and enjoy your life and feel good about the things that you're doing in your life and how they are going and you know what nobody else is in control of that except for you and me. We have to hone in on as on our means and lasso in the structure we need, and the balance we need and it's very hard. But this tips I shared today will give you a good basis to get yourself on track. So I hope this helps, I encourage you to go to trayerwilderness.com.
