What Is My “Brand” And What Do I Do With It? May 15, 2017
    Show notes

Can we be honest for a second? We live in a social media obsessed world. That means, everybody who is in the entertainment industry needs to know about their brand. Now before you cry about being a creative-type and "artist" who doesn't believe in social media, let me reassure you with this weeks' episode. My guest is Marissa Garcia, Co-President of M+C Collective, a marketing and strategy company that works with TV and movie studios, top brands, and movers and shakers in the entertainment world. Before launching M+C Collective Marissa was Motion Picture Marketing Agent at CAA for 14 years. Yes, that CAA. Her knowledge of what really goes on behind the scenes when marketing a movie is incredible and I'm so glad she was generous enough to share her expertise. If you're an actor or writer and you don't think your brand matters, you are wrong. It's a topic of conversation in boardrooms all over this town and the actors who get that will rise to the top more quickly. Christine Tasto & Marissa Garcia of M+C Collective Marissa talks about why she left CAA and launched M+C with her partner Christine Tasto. Christine has 11 years experience in marketing at IMAX. These women have quickly merged their talents and created a powerful marketing company that knows how to work with moms. Do you know why? Because they are both moms! We are living in a new age of Hollywood where women don't have to feel tied down to a 15 hour work day and be a servant to this business. Marissa explains how they started their own company and now make this business fit into their schedules as women and mothers. Amazing! This episode has so much great stuff in it you can practically hear me leaping with joy. Listen, then tell me what you're doing to work on your brand whether you're an actor, blogger, or business owner. For more information on Marissa Garcia visit mandccollective.com.

Lisa Loeb Shares Why She Loves Children’s Music May 09, 2017
    Show notes

I've had the song "Stay (I Missed You)" stuck in my head since interviewing Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb last week. It was a juggernaut hit for her in the 90's and she followed it up with a string of hit singles. She'll never know how lucky she was that I didn't sing it to her during our interview or I'm afraid it would have been a much shorter interview. I've been wanting to have Lisa on the show for a while now because of her presence in the LA music scene and popularity with kids. But also because of her longevity in the music industry. Lisa was a trailblazer when she released "Stay" from the Reality Bites soundtrack because she was the first independent pop musician to have a Number 1 single while not signed to a recording contract. Anyone in the music industry can tell you that's a huge accomplishment. Since then she's carved out a niche for herself with a large following of loyal fans. The music industry has changed a lot over the years and so has Lisa. She explains how motherhood has changed her perspective on music and her priorities. She also told me about her children's albums, which she recorded before having kids and why she's drawn to that style of music. Her children's albums “Catch the Moon” (with Elizabeth Mitchell) and Amazon Music exclusives, “Nursery Rhyme Parade!” and “Feel What U Feel” (featuring Craig Robinson and Ed Helms). She has also published two picture book-CDs for Sterling Children’s Books: “Lisa Loeb’s Songs for Movin’ and Shakin'” and “Lisa Loeb’s Silly Sing Along.” Her latest album "Feel What U Feel" is a family album of mostly original songs featuring guest artists Craig Robinson, Ed Helms and others. It's available exclusively on Amazon Music. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform at the Great Big Family Play Day in LA and it was wonderful. Parents who have been fans since their college days stopped by to listen and introduce their kids to her style of music. And it is a very unique style. Lisa has gentleness to her music and her spirit which I think is what draws people in and keeps them coming back for more, and makes them stay. In a few weeks she'll be doing a short residency at the Cafe Carlyle in NYC from June 6th to June 17th. For more information on Lisa visit her website, lisaloeb.com. Why Is It So Hard To Stay Healthy After You Have Kids? May 01, 2017
    Show notes

Why is it so hard to stay healthy after you have kids? This is something Chris and I talk about a lot so I invited him back to the show to chat with me. Plus I just loved talking to him so much and I wanted to do it again. You might as well get used to it. It's going to be a more regular thing. Chris and I constantly lament our unhealthy lifestyle. Why can't we eat better? Why are our pants so tight? Is it Channing's fault? Probably. After dissecting it we came to the conclusion that we're tired. Like most of the time, we're exhausted. I work 9 jobs and never sleep. Chris works one job and picks up my slack. There has to be a better way to manage our schedules right? I think ultimately that's what we've realized. We have to cut back on some things in order to add others. Pretty profound for adult people. But really I'm a night person and can never get up early. Chris is an early morning person so he lives to wake up and make breakfast (seriously). In some ways we complement each other like that. However lately we've been enabling each other when it comes to bad food, and lack of exercise. I'm too tired to make dinner so he runs through a drive-thru. Then we eat and sit on the couch all night. Sound familiar? I know we're not alone in our struggle to lose weight and get healthy. Or even just get motivated to get moving. I did a hard push last spring to lose 15 pounds by my 15th wedding anniversary and I reached my goal. Now here I am a year later, about to celebrate another wedding anniversary and I've gained everything back. I've let you down. I've let myself down. I've let America down. So I need to get back in the groove, but honestly I don't know how. We both do. Maybe if we do it together we'll have more success. Listen to the episode and you'll hear the challenges we've made to each other. Then tell me what has given you success in your weight loss goals!

BusyKid Uses Chores and Allowance To Teach Kids The Value Of Money Apr 18, 2017
    Show notes

April is Financial Literacy month so I thought we'd take a look at teaching finances to our kids! Gregg Murset is the CEO of BusyKid, a new website that helps parents teach their kids the value of money in a modern world. Nearly one quarter of US states receive a failing grade when it comes to teaching kids personal finance in schools. Twelve states don¹t attempt to teach it at all. This could be one of the reasons that only 35% of credit card users don¹t carry a balance and pay off their bill every month, and that only 1 in 3 Americans is saving for retirement. We don¹t expect kids to learn how to read, write or drive without instruction, but another essential life skill, money management is ignored for the most part. In this episode we are breaking down how parents can start teaching the value of money to their kids at an early age.

I didn't realize I was a fan of comic book movies until Marvel came out with Ironman. It was a game changer for mine, and many other people's moviegoing experience. Since then I have seen (almost) every Marvel movie and most of the DC films. But there's something different about the DC movie experience. Some fans love it, and a lot are frustrated over what's happening to their beloved franchise. So we're breaking down the Marvel and DC movie worlds...in under 30 minutes.
