    Mother Plus Podcast

This is the podcast for “too much” moms who feel like they are failing at motherhood and don’t want to fail anymore. Your hosts, Stacey Hutson and Stephanie Sprenger, two ADHD moms of four girls ages 4-18, most definitely don’t have it all figured out. But we know one thing for sure: understanding our brains is the key to enjoying our motherhood, and our SELVES again.

Here, we are brutally honest about our ADHD motherhoods (the missed Spirit Weeks, the mountains of laundry, the nostalgia for our old “fun” pre-mom selves) so you know you’re not the only one struggling.

When we don’t know the answers, or aren’t qualified to give them, we bring on the experts. Mental health therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, women’s doctors — we want to learn from them all. Because we believe once you know how to work WITH your ADHD brain rather than against it, it changes everything.

You found your people. We’re them. And you’re ours. Let’s figure this out together.

We Don't Like Playing With Our Kids: Here's Why Jan 10, 2022
    Show notes

    In this episode, we cover:

    1. What about playing makes us so uncomfortable: when you’re drained, and in perpetual “mom mode,” it’s hard to flip a switch into being playful.
    2. How to tap into play that feels good for both you AND your kids and ditch the guilt, too.
    3. Why the Montessori method not only gives us permission not to play, but shows us why it’s better to teach our kids not to rely on us for entertainment.
    4. What it looks like on the “other side of play” as our kids get older: when the “playing field” is leveled, it’s more fun, more genuine, and more natural.

How Making Space For Creativity Helped This Mom Get Unstuck Jan 03, 2022

    In this episode, we cover:

    1. Kimberlyn Owens-Hughes helps women make space for creativity-- creativity is the first thing to go when we are burned out.
    2. To do list vs to be list--how do you want to feel during the day?
    3. The importance of setting boundaries with our kids to foster their own independence and creativity.
    4. The role confidence plays in moms forgetting our identities and losing our spark.
    5. Using connection and community to get unstuck.

Kimberlyn is the founder of Coffee and Create, a virtual co-working space for female creatives. Kimberlyn offers personalized creativity coaching to help women learn how to manage their creative energy and make space for a creative outlet in motherhood and a society that emphasizes productivity over creativity.

Part over-achiever and part rebel, Kimberlyn has spent most of her adult life swaying between the expectation of making a successful and profitable business out of her language skills and her dream of reading books all day and writing her own. After her daughter was born, she spent the better part of the past 8 years pursuing more “sensible” and “productive” translation work, focusing more on the bottom line than on her inner desire for fun and creative freedom, with the belief that there was no longer room for creativity in motherhood. Little did she know this was the fast track to burnout. It wasn’t until she shifted her focus towards making space for creativity that she realized she could enjoy both creative and financial abundance.

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, she has resided for the past 15 years in Valparaiso, Chile, where she now lives with her daughter, her Argentinean fiancé, and their 4 pets (2 cats and 2 dogs).

In this episode of the Mother Plus Podcast, we cover:

    • How Niki lost her connection with music when she became a mother 2 + years ago. But she soon realized it was key to her mental health, to developing new skills, and really the best way to bond with her daughter.
    • She performs with her daughter on her back or her husband’s back, or with her hanging on stage with them and their band because Niki wants to have her daughter be a part of their love for music.
    • Overcoming your prior expectations of the kind of mother you were “supposed to be” vs. being the kind of mother that works for you (which you learn as you go)
    • Don’t be afraid to do what you love and bring your kid along.
    • Do what makes you feel wonderful - Niki’s take on following her dream to become a neonatal nurse and lactation consultant after having such a good experience with her own.
    • Don’t let anything stop you from doing things that make you happy, that make you "you"
    • In looking to find your passion, remember the things that made you feel happy before you were a mom, but don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t want to do them or aren’t ready to do them.

Niki Tredinnick is a mother + musician who writes and performs alongside her husband with The Dollhouse Thieves, Mile High Brass Band, Distance Walk, and various Colorado ensembles and projects. She plays the saxophone, clarinet, flute, guitar, and dabbles in the piano and the drums. She is also a full-time stay at home parent to her two year old daughter and a nursing student.

Niki lives in Denver with her husband, daughter and two cats.

In this episode of the Mother Plus Podcast, we cover:

    1. When a career change upended Mandy’s identity, she used her background in both biochemistry and mindset to create a business supporting the mental health of prospective medical students who are preparing for the MCAT.
    2. Why and how Mandy made a professional pivot during the pandemic. What happens when the right thing for your family isn’t the best for your career?
    3. Mandy shares her guilt-free perspective and why work makes her a better mom.
    4. Honor your motherhood style: why a “one size fits all” approach doesn’t work when it comes to parenting choices.
    5. Small, incremental steps are the key to success: Be authentic and follow your gut when starting your business-- you do not have to do what everyone else is doing or have everything perfect.

Mandy Siglin has a lot of titles: Mother to three + PhD, yoga instructor and mindset coach. Siglin received her PhD in Molecular Pharmacology and Structural Biology from Thomas Jefferson University. She lovingly served as the Director of Juniata College’s Health Professions Program for five years. When family circumstances took her away from her Director position right before the pandemic hit, she had to make a pivot. Inspired by her ability to change the students she worked with in the past with her unique science and mindset perspective, she founded ThiveMed, a company dedicated to the wellbeing of pre-med students. Mandy uses strategic, evidence-based practices to help students increase their confidence and lower their stress and anxiety around standardized entrance exams for admission to professional school.
Mandy lives in North Carolina with her husband, Josh, and three children.

Bri Hill is a mother of two children plus artist, teacher, course creator, and writer. She wanted to do something with her life that involved art, but questioned her skills after a damaging experience with an unsupportive professor as an art major. Bri shares the unique evolution of her experience as an artist, writer, and teacher, and how she found her way back to herself in this episode of The Mother Plus Podcast.

Find her on her website: https://brihillcreative.com/ or on Instagram @bri_hill_creative

    1. Curiosity: Why Bri recommends following our curiosity to lead us to what makes us feel most alive.
    2. The Evolution of Creativity: Bri shares how she overcame her need to see her own artistic process through someone else’s journey and how she arrived at the "aha" moment of her latest creative project.

    3. The Importance of Connection + Community: How vulnerability and validation helped Bri take herself seriously with her writing and art.

    4. Does every mother feel like this? We dive deep with Bri about whether all women want more than motherhood, and what happens when it’s not enough to fulfill you.
