    Mother Plus Podcast

This is the podcast for “too much” moms who feel like they are failing at motherhood and don’t want to fail anymore. Your hosts, Stacey Hutson and Stephanie Sprenger, two ADHD moms of four girls ages 4-18, most definitely don’t have it all figured out. But we know one thing for sure: understanding our brains is the key to enjoying our motherhood, and our SELVES again.

Here, we are brutally honest about our ADHD motherhoods (the missed Spirit Weeks, the mountains of laundry, the nostalgia for our old “fun” pre-mom selves) so you know you’re not the only one struggling.

When we don’t know the answers, or aren’t qualified to give them, we bring on the experts. Mental health therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, women’s doctors — we want to learn from them all. Because we believe once you know how to work WITH your ADHD brain rather than against it, it changes everything.

You found your people. We’re them. And you’re ours. Let’s figure this out together.

    In this episode, we cover:

    • When you finally claim something for yourself after years of telling yourself there was something wrong with you
    • The “got myself back moment”: finding your creative outlet and feeling attractive while doing it
    • The guilt around doing something for yourself that doesn’t make money
    • Find your "plus" as soon as you can because you’re going to need to have all your reserves when your kids turn into teenagers
    • The slippery slope between finding yourself and staying diligent with your teenagers
    • The different stages of life where we find the other side of our "plus" — from awareness that you should have one, to your family fully accepting your passions
    • Being able to answer the question: What would I do if I had a day to myself?
    • This is what this mom can do: What we can bring to the table with our creative skillset

LISA LANE is an overeducated goofball who finds the funny in the balancing act of parenting teenagers, becoming single at age 50, and navigating the chin hairs and wrinkles on her very own face. She is a regular host, feature, and mother figure in the Denver comedy scene, the author of Teenagers Suck and Beyond Mama Bear, an announcer/emcee, and a voiceover actor.

Her shows for parents, parenting groups, and educators offer frank and funny advice for frazzled families and anyone who knows the pain of working with teenagers. Based on years of research and experience as mother, teacher, and funny lady, Lisa’s message gives hope (and lots of laughs) to all those trying to survive the delicate balancing act of surviving adolescence.

Mother + Advocate: The Uncharted Territory Of The Teen Mental Health Crisis Jun 06, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

    In this episode, we cover:

    1. How bullying for teenage girls can be subtle and insidious: It may look more like relational or indirect aggression than traditional bullying, but that doesn't make it any less serious.
    2. Social media has acted as an accelerant for social problems amongst adolescence: externalizing their public identities makes it harder to be authentic and empathetic.
    3. Why fear of being a "helicopter parent" has led many parents to be too hands-off when it comes to their children's social and emotional (but not academic!) experiences.
    4. How can a restorative justice model help our kids navigate relationship challenges at every stage, from preschool through adolescence?
    5. There is nothing more important than showing up for our children and getting involved during social and mental health crises: we're teaching them that they are loved beyond measure, that we have their backs, and that their emotional needs are worth advocating for.

In this Stace and Steph episode, we talk about showing up for our kids to advocate for their emotional needs, even when it makes us question ourselves, and even when it makes us uncomfortable. We navigate that grief, anger, and sense of injustice that happens when our kids' teenage experiences don't go the way we envisioned—there is nothing more painful than watching our kids suffer. We'll discuss the impact social media has had on Gen Z, creating the uncharted territory of a modern teen mental health crisis. Steph shares her struggles with stepping in to advocate for her daughter, and brainstorms ideas for how we as parents could effect positive change.

    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

    In this episode, we cover:

    1. The reality of pregnancy discrimination and the damaging narrative that "having babies means you aren't serious about your career."
    2. What it looks like to be a mother + writer, and how having kids can actually enhance our creative process.
    3. Balancing the good and bad of modern motherhood: more honest, candid conversations paired with unrealistic expectations and overwhelm.
    4. The tempting trap of parenting trends that ultimately make moms feel worse about themselves + the rabbit hole of social media.
    5. There is no "right way" to be a mother AND there is no "right way" to be a mother plusser: pursuing the other side of your plus is not a one-size-fits-all!

    1. Why we are nostalgia junkies and have an obsession with all things 1980s and 90s...
    2. We are drawn to music, movies, TV shows, and books from our past now because they bring us comfort and remind us of a simpler time.
    3. Bringing our own childhoods into our lives with our children is a way to light us up and make "play" more fun.
    4. Ideas to bring our 80s-90s culture to our kids: read-aloud book club with our favorite childhood books; taking back the radio with OUR music, the Pop Classic children's book series with TV series/movies.
    5. Embrace the 80s-90s values of simplicity and freedom: Steph shares her obsession with creating a 1980s summer.

In this Stace and Steph episode, we talk all things 1990s and 1980s. Take a trip down memory lane with us as we share our favorite music, movies, TV shows, and books from the 1980s and 1990s. We dive into why exactly nostalgia is so comforting for us (spoiler: there's a great Clueless quote in here that sums it all up) and why it's so fun to share it with our kids.
In this episode, we reference the Pop Classics book collection (not affiliates; just fans)

This Mother + Interior Designer Helps Other Moms Feel Good In Their Home Apr 18, 2022
    Show notes

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode, we talk about:

    1. Getting curious and becoming an observer: Start noticing how you feel when you enter a space, then ask yourself "How do I WANT to feel in here?"
    2. Starting from a place of gratitude and appreciation—what do you love about the rooms in your home?
    3. How motherhood changes our spaces, and how we can take small steps and get the whole family involved.
    4. Rather than a major overhaul once a year, make "letting go" a regular part of your family's routines.
    5. Michal and Stacey have a "discovery call" to share with listeners what it's like to work with a designer to turn a room you despise into a room you love, and to inspire you to look at your home differently.

Michal Lauren Hunt is a seasoned interior designer with 15 years of experience focusing on large corporate workplaces, sustainability practices and evidence-based design. More recently, she has taken her passion for creating positive change through physical space from workplaces into the home environment. Her studio, TRIO Design Collaborative, seeks to bring peace and ease into the home through intentional design and simplicity. TRIO’s mission to create more peace and ease is inspired by Michal’s alter-ego as “Mama” to three kids under 8 and the recognition that life can feel chaotic and crazy, but your home doesn’t have to.
