Mormon Apologist Exposes Himself! RFM: 481 Sep 28, 2026
    Show notes

Ever wonder if Mormon Apologists like Jacob Hansen actually believe the arguments they make on behalf of the Mormon Church? Well that answer is now settled, and it is settled by none other than Jacob Hansen himself! On a recent podcast, Jacob Hansen admitted there is a difference between “Jacob the historian” and “Jacob the apologist.” “Jacob the historian” is interested in facts and what is most likely to have happened. “Jacob the apologist” doesn’t really care about any of those things, as it turns out. Who would have thought? The amazing thing is to hear Jacob Hanse himself admit to it! This is one you won’t want to miss! And it is a warning that should be played at the beginning of every Jacob Hansen podcast!

Will The Church’s Lawsuit Be Dismissed? RFM: 480 Sep 27, 2026
    Show notes

All the pleadings have been drafted and filed relating to John Dehlin’s Motion to Dismiss the Church’s trademark infringement case against him. RFM is joined by esteemed co-counsel Kolby Reddish to explain what is going on and who is likely to prevail in the motion to dismiss. As an added bonus, Church lawyer David Jordan gave an interview on a pro-Mormon podcast recently that we dissect and catch David Jordan trying to confuse the audience, and use their lack of legal acumen against them. David Jordan also manages to tell at least one whopper which we demonstrate with receipts. If this is the best legal representation the Church can find, maybe RFM should go back into active practice! Join us for this great episode! RFM and Kolby make the law understandable and even entertaining. No small feat, that

Man Overboard On Post-Mormon Cruise Sep 25, 2026
    Show notes

This week on A Mormon Newscast, we’re covering several stories where religion, policy, doctrine, and institutional change all collide. We’ll start with Jehovah’s Witnesses and their latest shift on blood transfusions—what changed, what technically didn’t, and why high-demand religions often seem to work very hard to change without ever having to say, “We were wrong.” We’ll also look at the latest developments surrounding the abortion measure in Idaho and the LDS Church’s decision to publicly oppose it, including some of the tensions and questions that creates around political neutrality, consistency, and institutional influence. From there, we’ll turn to temple news: the continuing controversy surrounding Lone Mountain, another temple groundbreaking, and the latest developments involving the Church’s major project in Denver. And finally, we’ll spend some time talking about our Post-Mormon Cruise—what went well, what didn’t, some of the stories and experiences from the week, and yes, even the remarkably underwhelming “taco lunch.” But we’ll end on a much more serious note with the tragic story of a passenger who jumped overboard during the cruise, what happened afterward, and how that experience affected those of us who were there.

    Ex-Mormon The Musical Sep 25, 2026
    Show notes

On this episode of Mormonism Live, we sit down with Rachelle and John Moyer, the creators behind “Ex-Mormon: The Musical,” to talk about how the project came together, what inspired the songs, and why music can be such a powerful way to process faith, identity, loss, humor, and life after Mormonism. We’ll dig into the story behind the album, the creative process of turning the ex-Mormon experience into a musical, and some of the themes woven throughout the soundtrack. We’ll also play and discuss several of the songs along the way. Whether you’ve left Mormonism, are questioning, still believe, or simply appreciate clever songwriting about complicated human experiences, this should be a fun and fascinating conversation about what happens when religious deconstruction meets musical theater. Listen to “Ex-Mormon: The Musical (Original Musical Soundtrack)” on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/album/4OxkzS1jbuwicBjZkGw2TS Join us as we talk with Rachelle and John Moyer about the humor, pain, creativity, and lived experience behind Ex-Mormon: The Musical.

LDS Apostle Says Real Men Apologize ! Sep 10, 2026
    Show notes

This week on Mormon Newscast, an LDS apostle has some surprisingly strong words about what “real men” do and the irony will stop you in your tracks. We’ll dig into that irony, plus a packed week of Mormon news. Tommy McKay is speaking up about the Mormon Stories lawsuit, and we’ll look at what he’s saying and why it matters. We also have the tragic story of a Latter-day Saint missionary from Tonga who died while serving. There are several temple developments this week, including vandalism connected to the controversial Fairview temple and a new development involving the Heber Valley temple court fight. We’ll also get into a fascinating—and potentially uncomfortable—Salt Lake Tribune discussion about sex, intimacy, and older LDS singles, along with a disturbing criminal case involving a former bishop and child sexual abuse material. And finally, FAIR appears to be gearing up for an absolutely massive 69-part series. Yes, sixty-nine. All that and more on this week’s Mormon Newscast—where we take the biggest stories in Mormonism, add the context that often gets left out, and try to figure out what they actually mean.

How Did Joseph Smith Know All This? Sep 04, 2026
    Show notes

Tonight on Mormonism Live, we examine a recurring pattern in Joseph Smith’s prophetic career: when he encountered something mysterious, incomplete, inaccessible, or simply unknown, he rarely seemed content to say, “I don’t know.” Instead, he supplied an answer—and often an extraordinarily detailed one.

A skeleton becomes Zelph, complete with a name, identity, history, and ancient associations. Egyptian papyri become the writings of Abraham. Egyptian figures become Abraham, Pharaoh, Shulem, Olimlah, gods, and cosmic teachings. The Kinderhook Plates produce an ancient genealogy. A stone becomes a seer stone capable of revealing hidden knowledge. Native Americans become Lamanites. Landscapes become Cumorah, Zion, the Garden of Eden, Adam-ondi-Ahman, and the “plains of the Nephites.”

And the pattern extends beyond objects and geography. Where scripture appears incomplete, Joseph supplies the JST, Book of Moses, Enoch material, and D&C 7’s hidden parchment. Where ancient language is unknowable, he supplies the “Pure Language” of Adam. Where the universe remained largely mysterious, Joseph supplies an elaborate Abrahamic cosmology involving Kolob and an entire hierarchy of named heavenly bodies.

But this raises a more important question than whether any single claim sounds strange: How reliable was Joseph Smith’s method of knowing?

We separate these claims into those that eventually became independently testable, those where some physical evidence exists but Joseph’s specific identification remains difficult to test, and those constructed around realities essentially beyond external verification. And a troubling pattern emerges: where later evidence allows us to check Joseph’s extraordinary claims, serious problems repeatedly appear.

So what should we make of the claims that remain safely beyond our ability to test?

This episode explores the possibility that Joseph Smith’s greatest prophetic advantage may have been the unknown—because the less anyone around him could verify, the more room he had to “know.”

Trust, Obey, Endure: How Mormon Conditioning Makes Abuse Harder to Recognize Sep 02, 2026
    Show notes

What happens when a religious system spends a lifetime teaching you to trust authority, obey, forgive, sacrifice, endure, distrust your own doubts, and fear the consequences of leaving? In this episode of Mormon Discussion, Teresa Hobbs leads Bill Reel and special guest Wendi Wilcock Jensen through a difficult question: Can LDS teachings and institutional structures unintentionally condition members with some of the same psychological habits that make coercive control and abusive relationships harder to recognize, resist, disclose, and escape? We trace these patterns across the Mormon lifespan—from Primary lessons about obedience and following the prophet, to teenage worthiness interviews and sexual shame; missionary obedience and surveillance; BYU’s institutional controls; temple marriage, gender hierarchy, forgiveness and divorce stigma; and finally the enormous social, familial and spiritual costs that can accompany dissent or leaving the Church. We also examine how these dynamics have affected women, LGBTQ and transgender members, racial and ethnic minorities, and others whose personal judgment or identity has sometimes collided with institutional authority. The argument is not that every Mormon experiences abuse or that every LDS teaching was deliberately designed to facilitate it. The question is what happens cumulatively when obedience, authority deference, confession, shame, hierarchy, self-sacrifice, institutional dependency and high exit costs become deeply embedded in a person’s understanding of righteousness. Because the disturbing possibility is this: the qualities someone has been taught make them faithful may sometimes be the very qualities an abusive person can exploit.

Wendi Wilcock Jensen Wendi Jensen is an author, speaker, and identity reconstruction coach who helps people rebuild a relationship with themselves after high-demand religion, toxic relationships, and other systems that taught them to distrust their own inner knowing. Her work bridges emotional healing, nervous-system awareness, and embodied self-reconnection, helping people move beyond simply understanding what happened to them and begin creating a life rooted in autonomy, authenticity, and self-trust by reconnecting with the body. She is also the author of The Healing Questions Guide- relevant questions to ask the mind to activate healing in the body. To reach Wendi – Wendi@wendijensen.com

Teresa Hobbs Teresa Hobbs is a Certified Trauma Recovery Coach™, Pain Reprocessing Therapy practitioner, and Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) provider and founder of Monarch Integrative Coaching. Her work integrates nervous-system regulation, Polyvagal Theory, attachment theory, mindfulness, somatic practices and mind-body approaches. She also works with people rebuilding self-trust and identity following high-demand religion. Coaching and Chronic Fatigue support https://www.monarchintegrativecoaching.com/

This conversation ultimately asks something larger than whether Mormonism explicitly condemns abuse. What does a lifetime of religious conditioning teach a person to do when authority conflicts with intuition, obedience conflicts with boundaries, forgiveness conflicts with accountability, and “enduring to the end” conflicts with getting yourself to safety? #MormonDiscussion #Mormonism #LDS #ExMormon #ReligiousTrauma #SpiritualAbuse #CoerciveControl #DomesticAbuse #ReligiousDeconstruction #Trauma #HighDemandReligion #MormonChurch

LDS Church Caught Lying In Court: RFM: 478 Sep 02, 2026
    Show notes

This time the LDS Church has gone too far! Lying to its membership is one thing, because the members know better than to criticize the leaders of the Church, even if the criticism is true. But this is in a court of law! Judge’s are not famous for taking it well when lawyers lie to their face. We’ll have to see what happens in this lawsuit once that realization starts sinking in! Here it is. The whole story of how the LDS Church just got caught lying in their lawsuit against John Dehlin! (This podcast contains material previously released on the 8-31-26 Mormon Newcast; substantially streamlined through editing for your pleasure.)

LDS Church Misrepresents Its Own Evidence Against Mormon Stories? Sep 01, 2026
    Show notes

Tonight on The Mormon Newscast, we dig into several stories making waves across the Latter-day Saint world. Our lead story returns to the LDS Church’s lawsuit against John Dehlin and Mormon Stories. A recent Church filing claims a Mormon Stories guest believed the podcast was “Church affiliated”—but when we go back to what the guest actually said, there appears to be an important difference between believing Mormon Stories was a faithful Mormon podcast and believing it was actually affiliated with the LDS Church. Did the Church misrepresent its own evidence?

We also cover the increasingly ugly backlash surrounding Charlie Bird and Ryan Clifford’s plans to become fathers through IVF, egg donation and surrogacy. What began as a debate among conservative Latter-day Saint commentators about same-sex parenting has now included disturbing personal messages and reported threats directed toward Charlie, Ryan and their future family. Also tonight: new data suggesting 22% of LDS college students surveyed identified as something other than heterosexual; Latter-day Saint creators using AI to produce cinematic Book of Mormon imagery; an update on the deadly Kearns LDS funeral shooting; a look back at the Church’s infamous “baseball baptisms” and what membership numbers actually tell us; and new research challenging some assumptions about women, ordination and religious retention. Finally, we look at the major restructuring happening inside BYU athletics surrounding Kalani Sitake and the football program, and Jana Riess takes a look at Ensign Peak’s investment performance—with outside analysts concluding that despite the Church’s enormous gains, its publicly reported stock portfolio has still lagged the S&P 500.

Join us as we break down the stories, the claims, and—most importantly—the details underneath the headlines on The Mormon Newscast.
