The Inclusive Workplace Revolution - Ayo Owodunni, Author of The Immigrant View and City Councillor in Kitchener, Ontario Oct 25, 2023
    Show notes

It’s not easy immigrating to a new country and trying to navigate a new workplace with different shorthand, customs, and rules… especially when that workplace isn’t set up so all employees feel seen, heard, and safe no matter their background. This was Ayo Owodunni’s initial experience when he immigrated to Canada from Nigeria back in 2016, before he became a City Counsellor for Kitchener Ontario and a management consultant for large-scale organizations such as Spotify, Canada Life, Microsoft, Thomson Reuters, CIBC, TMX Group and Hydro One. Seeing as over the past 5 years, Canada has welcomed over 1.5 million immigrants, with 6 out of 10 being economic migrants with years of professional experience and education, Ayo realized fairly quickly in his work that big change needed to happen on the institutional level. This is what inspired him to write his new book The Immigrant View to help companies develop a more inclusive culture and take advantage of the extensive skill sets that newcomers to Canada bring to the table as employees. In this episode, we discuss the specific challenges that immigrants may face in the workplace, the qualities of inclusive leadership, the importance of cultural intelligence, as well as practical steps for building a harmonious and diverse team.

From Never Enough to MoneyZen - Manisha Thakor, CFA, CFP and Author of MoneyZen Oct 18, 2023
    Show notes

Have we lost sight of what's really important in life and are we too focused on hustling our way to riches? For many of us, the answer is yes, and thanks to Manisha Thakor and her new book , we can start learning how to get back to a place of zen. I'm so excited to have Manisha on the show because her book is honestly right up my alley (as you may have noticed with some of the themes of the podcast lately). In this episode, she helps break down some of the personal, cultural, and societal forces that exist that have led many of us to falsely believe we can never have or be enough, and what steps we can take to embrace pure joy and have a healthier relationship with money. Manisha has worked in the financial services industry for more than 30 years, with an emphasis on women's economic empowerment and financial well-being. In addition to MoneyZen, she has also co-authored two other personal finance books: and . Although she's a CFA, CFP and has her MBA from Harvard Business School, Manisha's work now focuses on helping people of all ages to balance their financial health with their emotional wealth.

Better Financial Decision-Making Through Mastering Confidence - Peter Atwater, Economist and Author of The Confidence Map Oct 11, 2023
    Show notes

Why is it that often what's in the way of us achieving our financial goals and attaining wealth is ourselves? That's what I'm discussing with Peter Atwater, economics professor and author of , on the show today. After decades of working in financial services, when he turned 45 he abruptly quit his job (partially because his son reminded him he was halfway to 90) and changed course to study confidence and the impact it has on individual and group decision-making. Now, he's out with a book all about it in addition to teaching the topic at William & Mary University as well as the honors program at the University of Delaware. As we've discussed on the show before, money is simple but the hard part is controlling how it makes us feel. Luckily Peter offers some great insight into how to own those feelings so we can do a better job of reigning them in when we need to and make better financial decisions for the long-term.

Unlocking the Power of the Sharing Economy - Eleanor Tucker, Author of Thanks for Sharing, Speaker and Sharing Economy Consultant Oct 04, 2023
    Show notes

We hear the word “sustainability” a lot more now than we used to, but what can people like you and me actually do to make an impact? What role can we play to ensure we’re putting less waste in landfills and are being more thoughtful consumers? To answer these questions and more, I have Eleanor Tucker, author of , on the show. In this episode, she not only shares her personal journey of becoming more sustainable and trying out new apps and programs within the sharing economy with her family, but she also provides actionable tips for people in the US, UK and Canada so we can all start right doing something right after listening to this episode! I’ve gotta say, after talking with Eleanor, I found myself having a lot more hope for our future and our planet. Although bigger change needs to happen at the top (e.g. corporate and government levels), that doesn’t mean we can’t do what we can to save this planet we love as well as reconnect with one another in our neighbourhoods, cities, and global communities.

Breaking Bad Money Habits - Gabe Dunn, Author of Bad with Money, Podcast Host and Actor Sep 27, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back to the More Money Podcast and the premiere of Season 17 of the show! To kick things off, I've got New York Times best-selling author, podcast host, actor and filmmaker Gabe Dunn on the podcast, who you may already be familiar with from their popular book and podcast Bad with Money. In this episode, Gabe shares their personal finance journey from navigating private school as a lower-income kid, to studying at an elite college accruing mountains of student debt, to working an unpaid internship that got them further into debt to afford food and rent, to eventually becoming one of the most honest and vulnerable voices in the personal finance space today. Not only does Gabe openly share the mistakes they've made and lessons they've learned along the way (so you don't have to repeat them), but they also share the raw truth about managing money with bipolar disorder and the real costs of transitioning especially in the midst of losing health insurance due to the WGA strikes.

Borderless Banking & How to Be Wise With Your Money - Brigit Carroll, Policy Lead at North America at Wise Jun 15, 2023
    Show notes

I can't believe this is the last episode of Season 16! It's been an amazing season and I'm so happy to close it out with a great episode for all my summer travelers wanting to know how they can save money on converting their currency abroad. Or even if you aren't travelling this summer, if you aspire to be a digital nomad or frequently receive/send money to family or friends internationally, then you'll want to listen up. Brigit Carroll who joins me for this episode is the Policy Lead, North America at Wise, and she's sharing how Wise is changing the game for how we can send, receive and exchange money internationally and effectively normalize borderless banking. Brigit advocates for Wise’s mission of instant, convenient, transparent, and eventually free cross-border payments vis-a-vis policymakers in the U.S., Canada, and beyond. Based in Washington, D.C., Brigit joined Wise’s policy team in Brussels in 2019, focused on EU policy. Prior to joining Wise, Brigit gained 5+ years’ experience in public affairs and advocacy in Brussels, at global communications firm FleishmanHillard and the American Chamber of Commerce to the EU. In this episode, Brigit explains how Wise works, including how it keeps your money safe and makes international transactions easy with lower fees and better exchange rates. She also shares her own story of using Wise before she started working for the company while she lived in Europe and how they are constantly trying to improve and partner with financial institutions to make things easier and better. Thank you so much for listening to another season of the More Money Podcast and thank you to all the amazing guests that came on the show! I'm going to take a much-needed summer break, work on my book and visit my family in Vancouver. So with that, see you in September and enjoy your summer too!

    Show notes

It's the penultimate episode of Season 16 and today I'm joined by a millennial making waves with her personal finance content on Instagram and Tiktok — Melissa Jean-Baptiste aka Millenial in Debt. Melissa is a former high school teacher turned financial educator and career coach who helps millennials and Gen Z build generational wealth and gain financial freedom in a shame-free digital environment. In this episode, Melissa shares her debt journey and why she thinks it's important to add yourself into your budget, in other words, don't forget to have fun and live a little! She also shares what she'd do differently looking back at her twenties and what the reality of going viral online was like (FYI, it's not all fire and high-five emojis). This episode is for all the people who think they're running out of time because they've hit their 30s. As someone who recently turned 37, let me tell you, don't worry, you still have plenty of time to achieve your goals and change your financial life!

The Case for Passive vs. Active Investing - Anu Ganti and Joseph Nelesen, Senior Directors of Index Investment Strategy at S&P Dow Jones Indices May 31, 2023
    Show notes

As we know, I'm a huge advocate for index investing and today on the More Money Podcast I have two guests who are sharing their expertise on the subject including some of the pitfalls of investing in actively managed funds. Anu Ganti and Joseph Nelesen, both Senior Directors of Index Investment Strategy at S&P Dow Jones Indices, are joining me today and I'm telling you, this episode is chock-full of valuable investing info! Anu is a CFA charterholder and holds her MBA in finance and economics from Columbia Business School, as well as her bachelor’s degree in finance and marketing from NYU’s Stern School of Business. She is often sharing her expertise with both print and broadcast media outlets and helps lead the index investment strategy team in providing research and commentary on the entire S&P DJI product set, including U.S. and global equities, thematics, commodities, fixed income, and sustainability indices. Prior to joining the team, Anu worked in the asset management space, completing a post-MBA rotational program at Russell Investments within their fixed-income research and trading divisions and also worked as a portfolio manager focusing on emerging market equities at Parametric Portfolio Associates (a subsidiary of Eaton Vance).

Joseph holds a Ph.D. from Northwestern University, an MBA from the Kenan Flagler Business School at University of North Carolina, and a Bachelor of Arts with honors from the University of California at San Diego. He also helps lead the index investment strategy team, but prior to working at S&P DJI he headed iShares Institutional Factors Strategy at Blackrock and held roles in exchange-traded product research and development. Joseph also previously worked in mergers and acquisitions and corporate investment banking with Citigroup and Bear, Stearns & Co. In this episode, Joseph and Anu challenge the myth that indexing only yields average investment returns and share how SPIVA measures actively managed funds against their index benchmarks worldwide using the data and insights they've gained over the past 20 years.

One topic I don’t talk enough about on this podcast is giving back, specifically by donating to charities and making room for those donations in our budgets. That’s why I’m so happy to have Shannon Craig, Chief Marketing Officer at CanadaHelps, on the show today to talk about how easy, fun, and fulfilling giving back to our communities can actually be.
