"What are the types of roles that up and coming people should be looking at?"
---
This week on the podcast I had Ian Rifkin, the Sr. Director of Recruiting at Endeavor and Head of Music Careers at The Digilogue. I wanted to switch things up this time around and do an episode that wasn't as focused on artist marketing tactics but something more general for those people that are looking to simply work in the industry. That said, I also think artists should think about working within the industry as well, that way they can build up their network and learn the ins and outs before going off on their own.
Part 2 coming next week, enjoy!

This week's guest on the unsigned podcast is Benji Stein. After starting as a musician himself, Benji realized that his passion was more on the manager side of things, so he decided to switch several years back. That lead him on a path to find the best ways to help him and his artists systemize the things they could, one area being playlist pitching outreach. So in the early days of the pandemic, Benji decided to start a software company called PlaylistSupply. The software is essentially a search tool that allows users to find third-party playlists on Spotify while also providing their contact info!
In part 1 of our convo, we talk about Benji's early days, his tips for artists on the rise as well as what PlaylistSupply is. Part 2 is coming next week. Enjoy!

Anna Bond is the Senior Director of Global Business Development at Songtrust, a full-service global publishing administrator built with the artist in mind. A seasoned industry professional, an Indie band geek at heart, and a longtime advocate for independent artists, I couldn’t think of anyone better to talk to about music publishing in 2020.
Companies like Songtrust are putting pressure on the labels by showing artists that they don’t need to sell their soul in order to sell their music. Founded in 2011, the company started with the goal of becoming the easiest way to collect publishing royalties for anyone at any stage in their career. Today, they are the most popular music royalty collection solutions in the world. Music professionals of all kinds use Songtrust to simplify music rights management, including the administration of music publishing assets, performing rights, and digital licensing.
Understanding how Songtrust operates as a publishing administrator through Anna’s eyes is also an excellent framework for learning how publishing works in today’s digital music landscape!

Fast forward a year, we became fast friends and even worked a few projects together!
But this week I wanted to pick his brain on how he got started and his best practices when it comes to creating a story with your images.

This week's guest is Michael Persall. Michael and I met via Frank Woodworth, another guest I had on the podcast (check his episode HERE), but I first heard about his company, Treble, a few years back when they started throwing parties and events around NYC. Since then I've been following them on social media and decided to hit Frank up to connect the dots for us. Treble has come a long way and are about to launch a new version of their platform to help connect artists with the team members they need in order to take their careers to the next level!

This week I sat down with Liz Snair. Liz and I met a few years back when I was working at Sony Music but Liz is now the VP of North American Label Management at The Orchard, a subsidiary of Sony Music. I couldn't wait to speak with Liz about The Orchard and how they work with artists because I feel that it's something a lot of up and coming artists and managers ask about, what is a distribution deal, and how do I get one? Liz answers that question and more on this week's episode, so pay attention!

We've been trying to get this recorded for the last year so I'm glad we could finally make this happen! I wanted to take a few weeks off for the podcast and I thought it was best to not take up any unnecessary airtime from people and outlets that truly need it. And even releasing this episode with Cliff Joseph, who runs marketing at Arista Records, I wanted to make sure that we began the convo talking about the #BlackLivesMatter movement and how important it's resurgence is. We also talked about how Cliff got his start working in entertainment by cold emailing Paul Rivera, a key member of Lebron James' inner circle, and how he made the transition to music marketing full time. Cliff also shines a light on how artists should be embracing their uniqueness at all times.

This week on the podcast I wanted to talk about something that stops a lot of great art from people created, the notion of having to wait until the quality of the music is at the highest level it should be. “I'm starting to gain some traction with my free event, how do I monetize?"
“How do I impact culture and create a moment?”
“What's Jay Z like in real life?”
—
Manufacturing a moment is something all artists and brands try and accomplish when they're trying to launch something new. The problem is, most of the time it doesn't work because they don't fully understand their culture and their place within culture. Also, they try too hard. But when you do things because they're natural and true to yourself, that's when the magic can happen.
In episode 12 of the "unsigned podcast," we sat down with the founder of Dusse Palooza, Kam McCullough. Kam tells us about how he got his start in the entertainment business and what he's learned turning his simple house party into a series of national events which ultimately lead to partnering with Jay Z's company, Dusse. “I want to throw an event for my new music, how do I make it memorable for my audience?"
“What is the one thing I'm forgetting to do when it comes to creating content?”
“How can podcasts benefit me as a musician?”
—
Creating content is one of the biggest things artists need to do when it comes to their careers, especially during the period in between new releases, but like anything else, it's hard to know what you should spend your time and what you should ignore. This is increasing harder if you've never had a digital strategy before. Also, how can you take something from being online to being in the real world?
In episode 11 of the "unsigned podcast", Jessica Angeles from Anchor, the podcast company that was acquired by Spotify this past year, stopped by to chat about her previous time at Tumblr, event production, creating digital strategies, and the potential future of how podcasting and music can better work together.
Enjoy!

“I want to play college shows, how do I know if I am ready for that?”
“Who do I talk to when I'm trying to book a college gig?”
—
In today's music business, one of the many keys to longterm success is having a great live show. That said, many artists that are starting out and seeing success online fail to make this happen because they think they only have to post on social and people will pay to see them. That isn't always the case and more often than not, when that does happen, it's the exception, not the rule. So how do you make sure that your online success translates to people showing up at your gigs?
In episode 1o of the "unsigned podcast", we sat down with booking coordinator at UTA, Ron Perks to talk about how college tours work and what artists and managers should really be focusing on when it comes to building a touring business for themselves. We also talk about how Ron got his start booking shows in Buffalo NY before moving to NYC and ultimately becoming Cheryl Paglierani's (Post Malone and 21 Savage's booking agent) assistant before becoming an agent himself at United Talent Agency.
