    Episode 304.
    "Hell or High Water"
    Cinematographer: Giles Nuttgens.

Filmography includes: Hell or High Water The Wedding Guest and Enola Holmes 1 and 2.
Giles lensed David Mackenzie’s Hell or High Water, which premiered in Un Certain Regard at 2016’s Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim. Starring Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine and Ben Foster, Nuttgens earned a 2017 BAFTA Film Award nomination for Best Cinematography for his work. In 2016 Nuttgens also worked on The Fundamentals of Caring, which first screened at Sundance.
With his latest release, Montana Story, earning the 2021 Platform Prize at Toronto International Film Festival, Giles Nuttgens, BSC is an award-winning cinematographer with 25 years of experience.

Shot on 35mm, the film marks Nuttgens’ reunion with directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel, with whom he shot, among others, his first U.S. feature The Deep End (2000), earned the Best Photography award at Sundance Film Festival. Another long standing collaboration links Nuttgens with prolific British director, Michael Winterbottom, for whom he photographed Greed with Steve Coogan and The Wedding Guest starring Dev Patel. Nuttgens and Winterbottom are preparing another film, set in 1930’s Palestine under British colonial rule. Nuttgens shares other titles with director David Mackenzie, from Young Adam, starring Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton, to the critically acclaimed Hell or High Water – BAFTA nominated for Best Cinematography and Oscar nominated for Best Picture.

Since completing Montana Story, Nuttgens photographed Enola Holmes 2, a new film following upon the blockbuster success of the first Legendary Pictures movie, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill and Helena Bonham Carter, about Sherlock Holmes' inquiring little sister. Nuttgens' career has seen him filming all over the world, from his start in the industry shooting documentaries in 16mm for the BBC to the transition to feature films, working for Lucasfilm as 2nd Unit DP on Episodes 1,2 and 3 of Star Wars.

He has shot multiple projects set in India, including Deepa Mehta's Oscar nominated Water, which also won Nuttgens a Canadian Genie Academy Award for Best Cinematography. In 2018, he spent six months in Anatolia and Detroit, filming the dystopian feature Grain for acclaimed Turkish director Semih Kaplanoğlu, one of the last films to be shot on 35mm Black and White Kodak stock.

His upcoming project, 'The Friend' is once again with David Siegel and Scott McGehee, set in New York and scheduled to start shooting early summer.

    Welcome, Giles Nuttgens.

    Episode 301.
    The Haunting of Hill House.
    Film Composers: "The Newton Brothers"
Andy and Taylor were both learning and making music from a young age, educated and inspired by such wide-ranging influences as Puccini operas, John Williams film scores, and albums by Kraftwerk. Between the two, they play piano, guitar, bass, clarinet, flute, accordion, sax, harmonica, percussion, organ, kazoo, and cello. They fuse their classical education with a skill and savvy in electronics and manipulated sounds, to contribute distinct music to a diverse spectrum of film projects and capitalize on having two musical heads.
They lent their Newtonian approach to score the epic Sci-fi film Extinction for Universal Pictures (Directed by Ben Young, starring Mike Pena ), the acclaimed Shirley Jackson novel The Haunting Of Hill House (Exec Produced by Mike Flanagan, Trevor Macy & Steven Spielberg), Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass.

(Episode 300) "Cobra Kai" Director: Marielle Woods. May 12, 2022
    Show notes

    Episode 300.
    "Cobra Kai"
    Director: Marielle Woods.
I could not be more proud to have the 300th episode be a guest that's this awesome. Really loved speaking with Marielle who is really passionate about filmmaking. We talk all things Cobra Kai, who the real villain is and why the show manages to touch all ages and generations.
    Great talk.
Marielle Woods is an award-winning, queer filmmaker who thrives in the high-stakes world of action storytelling. She pushes emotional buttons and visual boundaries, telling stories that make audiences think — with a few explosions and car chases along the way.
After receiving her BA from Harvard in 2008, Woods moved west and has been working as an LA-based director and producer ever since. She got her start in docudrama television, crafting shows for networks including Discovery, History, A&E and Animal Planet. She cut her teeth filming gunfights, avalanches and animal attacks, traveling around the globe in pursuit of good stories. Now, she lives every week like it's Shark Week.
Determined to move into the scripted world, Woods cold-called and warm-emailed her way to observing on FAST & FURIOUS 6 and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER. Shortly thereafter, she transitioned a similar shadowing opportunity into a hired position assisting the stunt team on JOHN WICK: CHAPTER TWO. She then moved up to become a Stunt Department Coordinator, and spent almost a decade working with some of the best Stunt Coordinators and Second Unit Directors in the business on projects including BABY DRIVER, BRIGHT, and WESTWORLD.
Woods’ short films have toured the festival circuit with acceptances including LA Shorts Fest, Montreal World Film Festival, Cleveland International Film Festival, Cinequest, Rhode Island Flickers, Santa Barbara International Film Festival, and NBCU Short Cuts. She flipped a car in the jungles of Puerto Rico for her short, MI CORAZON, and recreated war-torn Iraq on a soundstage in Culver City for her 2018 film, DO NO HARM. In 2019, Woods turned sign-spinning into a martial art for her AFI DWW film, SPIN.
Woods has been recognized as a member of the AFI Directing Workshop for Women, the Universal Directors Initiative and the HBOAccess Directing Fellowship. She has directed episodes for Seasons 4 & 5 of COBRA KAI for Netflix and Sony TV. Her original queer-action-romance, HEART SHOT, made as part of Netflix's Emerging Filmmakers Initiative, is streaming worldwide on Netflix.
Currently, Woods is in development on a number of original action projects spanning a range of genres and tones. She is working to create “non-binary” filmmaking – blending the emotional resonance that some might deem “feminine” with the societally assigned “masculinity” of the action genre.
    Welcome, Marielle Woods.

    Show notes

    Episode 296.
    "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"
    Actor: Daphne Maxwell Reid.
You wouldn’t blame someone with a lifetime of success as a performer to take it easy in their later years, restricting their efforts to the occasional fun gig or reunion appearance. But that’s not Daphne Maxwell Reid, who continues to thrive as a creative entrepreneur and artist, continuing to dazzle anyone who knows her with her bold spirit, grace, and work ethic. One of the first African-American women to make the cover of Glamour magazine and one of television history’s most beloved sitcom moms, Reid now balances her acting gigs with her work as a photographic artist, clothing designer, and education activist, demonstrating that it’s never too late to pursue new passions and find new opportunities.
When she attended Northwestern University a half-century ago, Daphne Maxwell became the prestigious school’s first African-American homecoming queen; but that was just the first of many barriers that Maxwell broke in her career, arriving into the industry at just the right moment as a new perspective on race was emerging in the wake of the
civil rights movement. “Being among the first of a few black women to work in popular television reminds me that one doesn’t choose to be a pioneer,” she says today. “One does what comes next in their journey, and sometimes you happen to be the first to do it. I just happened to land in that slot of being first for some things – but being the first
doesn’t mean anything if it doesn’t seed the growth of a lot more. I’m pleased that my seed bore fruit, and now there are so many more black homecoming queens and cover models and actresses in popular entertainment.”
Best known as being "Aunt Viv" from The Fresh Prince of Bell-Air from Seasons 3-6, You will come to see she is so much more than that.
    Welcome, Daphne Maxwell Reid.
