Pregnancy following Pregnancy loss, and Birth Preparation from a First Time Mom Jun 19, 2025
    Show notes

*Disclaimer: We speak about pregnancy loss in this episode at great length.*

This is our first real mom spotlight, a series we are committed to bringing to you guys! Real moms, real stories.

Today Taylor and Natasha have conversations with a first time mama - and a long time friend, Kelea. Before her current pregnancy, she experienced a traumatic pregnancy loss - and in the moment felt completely at a loss at what to do. Do you go to the hospital, do you stay home and let it run its course? Do you Chat GPT what to do? How do you know the point to go in? All of these things have us wondering why something that is so common - feels so difficult to navigate. We also walk through Kelea’s current pregnancy, navigating things like her birth plan. Why do women seem to NEVER catch a break in terms of judgment towards their birth plan, we truly are all doing something hard. Let’s give each other a break. P.S., NIPPLE STIMULATION CAN START LABOR. You heard it here first. We can’t wait for you to listen.

Millennial Dads & the Mental Load: Fatherhood & Partner Support Jun 12, 2025
    Show notes

Dads — this one's for you. Kind of.

In honor of Father's Day, Taylor and Natasha give credit where it's due: millennial dads are genuinely more present and emotionally available than any generation before them. Dads in ancient Rome could legally disown their kids. Victorian upper-class dads saw their children for 15 minutes a day. 1950s dads might say "I love you" on graduation day if you were lucky. In 1975, only 7.5% of new fathers took any form of paternity leave. Today that number is 66.5%. Progress is real.

But there's still work to do — and this episode gets into all of it.

They break down the mental load and why the division of labor after a baby will never be truly 50/50 (and why that's okay, if both people are getting what they need). They talk about why dads can actually experience postpartum depression — one in ten men do — and why it makes more sense than it sounds when you consider that their lives don't really change until the baby arrives, while moms have been adjusting for ten months already.

There's also: what Instagram followers said were the most helpful things their partners did postpartum (and one very memorable "absolutely effing nothing"), why "just do it, don't ask what she needs" is the best postpartum advice for any partner, the date night pressure that needs to stop, and an ancient Mexican practice involving a rope and a husband's testicles during labor that Taylor and Natasha would very much like to bring back.

Happy Father's Day. You're doing better than King Louis XIV. The bar is on the floor, but you're clearing it.

Topics covered: millennial dads, mental load, division of labor after baby, postpartum depression in men, paternity leave, relationship after baby, what partners should do postpartum, fatherhood through history, postpartum support, date nights after kids, self-care for parents, single parents

It Takes a Village: How to Build Mom Community, Make Mom Friends & Set Up Postpartum Support Before You Need It Jun 05, 2025
    Show notes

Everyone says it takes a village. Nobody tells you how to build one.

This episode is Taylor and Natasha's honest, practical guide to the modern mom village — what it used to look like, why we've lost it, and how to actually create it when you live six hours from your family, your friends don't have kids yet, and society wasn't set up to support you in the first place.

They start with the big picture: how the shift to nuclear families separated women from the communal support they had for centuries, and how we've been trying to reinvent the wheel ever since. And then they get into the practical stuff — because knowing the village is missing doesn't help you if you don't know how to find it.

The biggest piece of advice: set up your support system while you're pregnant, not after. Therapy, an IBCLC, a cleaning person, a breastfeeding support group — find and vet these people before the baby comes so you're not Googling alone at 2am in survival mode trying to figure out who to call. Free breastfeeding support groups exist in almost every city, and showing up pregnant is not weird — it's actually the smartest thing you can do.

They also talk about the part nobody makes sound easy: making mom friends as an adult. The awkward eye contact at the fish market. The stranger at the YMCA who said "you look normal, want to hang out?" and became one of their closest friends. Why you should just ask — because every mom wants more community, even if they look like they already have it figured out.

Plus: why you don't need half the baby gear you think you do (it's keeping you inside and alone), how to be a villager not just a village-receiver, the college friend who used her only PTO to fly out and do dishes, and the reminder that your baby's cry is the loudest in the room only to you.

The village is there. You just have to go build it.

Topics covered: mom community, postpartum isolation, how to make mom friends, building a support system during pregnancy, breastfeeding support groups, postpartum support, IBCLC, postpartum therapy, nuclear family, loss of the village, new mom loneliness, postpartum resources, baby gear minimalism, mom friendships

Stages of Labor Explained: What Contractions Really Feel Like, Prodromal Labor & Why You Don't Have to Give Birth on Your Back May 22, 2025
    Show notes

Nobody taught us this in school. You got a sex ed class but zero information about what actually happens when a baby comes out of your body. Taylor — certified childbirth and lactation educator — is fixing that right now.

In this episode, Natasha and Taylor break down everything you actually need to know about labor and birth: the stages, what they feel like, when to go to the hospital, and what the movies have been lying to you about for decades.

They cover why your water probably won't break dramatically in a parking lot (that's only 10% of births), what contractions actually feel like ("period cramps on crack"), what prodromal labor is and why it sent Taylor to the hospital multiple times for three weeks, and the 5-1-1 rule for knowing when to head in. They also get into why staying home as long as possible in early labor isn't just comfortable — it's backed by science (oxytocin vs. catecholamines, look it up).

Then there's the birth position conversation. Why do women give birth on their backs? Turns out the answer traces back to King Louis XIV of France, his 22 children, and a very disturbing personal fascination. No, really. And it might make you want to ask your provider about alternatives.

Plus: what doulas actually do (and how Taylor got certified), intuitive pushing vs. being told to push, the ring of fire, birthing the placenta, and the fact that Taylor still has hers in the freezer. Her son is almost two.

Knowledge is power. You don't have to be crunchy to understand how your own body works.

Topics covered: stages of labor, what contractions feel like, prodromal labor, active labor, transition phase, pushing phase, birthing the placenta, birth positions, why women give birth on their backs, doulas, DONA certification, birth education, Lamaze, epidural vs. unmedicated birth, 5-1-1 rule, oxytocin, advocating for yourself in labor
