Our scripture for today comes from 1 John 4:18: “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love” (1 John 4:18, ESV). In a world often plagued by anxiety and uncertainty, Advent calls us to find rest in the unshakable love of God—a love that overcomes fear and offers peace.
1. The Source of Fear: Fear often arises when we feel vulnerable, guilty, or uncertain about the future. But John reminds us that God’s love is perfect—it confronts and overcomes the root of our fears. In Christ, we have no need to fear punishment, for Jesus bore it all on the cross. Romans 8:1 declares this liberating truth: “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1, ESV).If you are in Christ, there is no sin too great, no failure too deep, that His love cannot cover.
2. Love in the Midst of Fear: Advent is the celebration of God’s love breaking into a fearful world. When the angel announced Jesus’ birth, what was his first message? “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy” (Luke 2:10, ESV). This “good news” wasn’t merely an announcement; it was a declaration that God’s love, embodied in Jesus, had come to defeat sin, death, and fear itself. Calvin wrote, “The love of Christ will never leave us void of courage, for it gives us confidence to approach the throne of God boldly.” Advent teaches us to live with confidence, not fear, because the Savior has come.
3. Love That Sustains Us: Even when life feels overwhelming, God’s perfect love sustains us. Psalm 23:4 reminds us: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me (Psalm 23:4, ESV). This love doesn’t promise a life without hardship but assures us that God is with us in every trial. His love steadies us and drives out the fears that try to take root.
