James Vaulkhard - MoA Bonus Episode 05 Mar 18, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to James Vaulkhard (@jamesvaulkhard)

James Vaulkhard holds a BA degree in History of Art from Leeds University, and has both trained and taught at Charles Cecil Studios and Studio Della Statua in Florence, Italy. Here, he gained a formidable reputation for his ability to embrace and manifest traditional techniques in both portraiture and sculpture. Notably, upon his graduation in 2013, Vaulkhard was commissioned to participate in a bridge project between Italy and Kenya, developing the preliminary studies for The Sacred Heart Cathedral Kericho in collaboration with local Kenyan sculptors.

In his most recent work, Vaulkhard has combined techniques developed in both these series of works and married them to the aesthetic arena of Japanese art, specifically addressing the mysterious concept of Ma or negative space. The result is a series of abstract landscapes intended to draw the viewer deeper into nature via an overwhelming visual cacophony that seeks to communicate the vast potentialities that exist between the elements.

‘World Waxed Green’ opens at Asia House on 23-28 March and is curated by MC Llamas

Ep.167 Karen Turner - Ministry of Arts Podcast Mar 14, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Kare Turner (@karen_turner_artist)

A figure and portrait artist, her paintings mostly feature women and are a commentary on the weight of expectations placed on the female sex. With a particular focus on the physical body and the scrutiny to which it is commonly subjected, she works in oils and seeks to highlight pigments in the skin that can often go unnoticed, emphasising and exaggerating them to accentuate their

    extraordinariness.

In 2020 Karen’s work was selected for the Portraits for NHS Heroes exhibition and the accompanying Bloomsbury book, and in May 2021 she was awarded the President’s Prize at the Institute of East Anglian Artists Open Exhibition. She was a finalist in the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize 2021 and has

been shortlisted for both the New Emergence Art Prize 2022 and the Women United Art Prize 2021. In March she will be exhibiting at The Other Art Fair in London, where she has been selected as the Fair Director's Pick.

Ep.166 Rich Miller - Ministry of Arts Podcast Mar 04, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Rich Miller (@richmillerpots)

Richard studied ceramics at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, graduating in 2003. For the last 12 years he’s been running Froyle Tiles, a handmade tile company based in Surrey. Specialising in the bespoke production of high fired stoneware tiles, they have to date carried out a range of commissions for a variety of notable architects and designers.

Richard has a passion for clay and continues his own studio practice, exhibiting his ceramics at selected shows. Richard's work makes reference to historical design patterns. It draws on themes of British colonialism and the way in which the U.K. has become an eclectic mix of cultural styles, as immigration has brought with it a rich source of influence. Images associated with the colonies, that have become adopted by the British mainstream are the core influence on Richard's practice.

More recently Richard fulfilled the role of judge on the Channel 4’s ‘The great Pottery Throwdown’.

Ep.164 John Dalton - Ministry of Arts Podcast Feb 14, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to John Dalton (@johndaltonart)

John Dalton is an artist, writer and podcast host (John Dalton’s Easy Does It)

The work of John Dalton arises at the intersection of consciousness and love.

With influences as diverse as Anish Kapoor, Charles Bukowski and Krishnamurti, new insights are distilled from both internal and external dialogue.

Art, for John, is a crucial means for expressing felt knowledge.

His diverse work in Further Emergence, podcasting, painting, and writing, gently probe the curtain of existence, pulling it aside in places allowing glimpses into the mystery beyond.

Like most people his age he’s had many lives within the one. He’s loved deeply, cried hard, lost what was most precious to me and been given the greatest of gifts.

John got the cosmic joke from an early age but for most of his life, he’s been saddened by how few people are laughing.

Ep.163 Camille Walala - Ministry of Arts Podcast Feb 03, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Camille Walala (@camillewalala) Known for her ambitious, large-scale and explosively colourful interventions in public spaces, Camille Walala uses the man-made landscape as a platform for disseminating positivity. Her work encompasses full-facade murals, immersive 3D installations, street art, interiors and set design – characterised by a fusion of bold colours and playful geometric patterns. Since her ‘Dream Come True Building’ burst onto the Shoreditch streetscape in 2015 and thrust her into the spotlight, Camille and her creative producer, Julia Jomaa, have been engaged in an increasingly bold roster of international projects. These have included collaborations with leading global brands – such as LEGO, for whom she created the HOUSE OF DOTS; the creative direction of the ground-breaking Mauritian hotel SALT of Palmar; and a slew of major installations for events like NYC’s WantedDesign and London Design Festival – including Walala Lounge, as complete suite of semi-permanent street furniture that transformed South Molton Street, Mayfair, into a corridor of colour. Camille finds inspiration in community and collaboration, and the power or colour and pattern to transform atmospheres, elevate moods and spark positivity. Ep.162 The London Police - Ministry of Arts Podcast Jan 24, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Bob & Chaz of The London Police (@thelondonpolice)

The London Police is an art collective started in 1998 when two English geezers headed to Amsterdam to rejuvenate the visually disappointing streets of Hollands capital.

They were part of a small group of artists at the end of the last century that helped pioneer the street art movement. After a few years of mixing traveling and making art in the street TLP began to receive worldwide recognition for their contribution to the graffiti/street art movement.

They were included in many of the books documenting the scene and invited for shows and live drawing performances all over the globe. Some 22 years on TLP have amassed more than 100 shows and events in over 35 countries and their street work continues to pop up everywhere they go. Since 2009 TLP has concentrated on more intense canvas work, on bigger solo shows and large scale mural projects.

The London Police are Chaz Barrisson who draws the iconic ‘LADS’ character and Bob Gibson whose tight portrait and architectural illustrations help marry the two styles to create an endearing, exciting fantasy world...

Carolyn Tripp is a classically trained ceramic artist receiving her degree in ceramics from Camberwell School of Art under the professorship of Richard Slee in the 1990’s.

“Working with clay is a constant learning curve and in order to improve my practice I regularly top-up my learning by attending classes in groups or one to one sessions with makers, whose work I admire in the ceramic community.

I am happily situated at Wimbledon Art Studios in south London, within walking distance of home. In addition to my own practice I hold a board and teaching position at Studio 306 Collective, a social enterprise based in Wood Green, London. The collective works alongside adults living with and recovering from Mental health illness. I have been working in this field for the past 12 years and believe passionately in for the role of expressing creativity in maintaining our positive mental health. I have also held a teaching position at Workshop 305 another social enterprise, but this time working with adults with learning difficulties. Currently I teach adult evening classes at the workshop on an ad hoc basis”.

Ep.160 Keith Brymer Jones - Ministry of Arts Podcast Jan 03, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Keith Brymer Jones (@keith brymerjones)

Keith Brymer Jones is a British potter and ceramic designer, known for his homeware Word Range with retro lettering and punk motifs. In 2015, he debuted as an expert judge alongside Kate Malone on BBC2’s The Great Pottery Throw Down where his readiness to shed tears at the contestants' work attracted comment. He has continued his role and remained as judge when the programme transferred to More4 in 2020.

At the age of 11, the London-born Brymer Jones made his first pottery object – an owl. It was then that he knew he wanted to be a potter and, after a brief stint as the lead singer of British punk band The Wigs, he became an apprentice for Harefield Pottery in London. This is where he learnt to make modern ceramics.

After his apprenticeship, Brymer Jones started out hand-making ceramics for retailers including Conran Group, Habitat, Barneys New York, Monsoon, Laura Ashley and Heal's. He began to develop the Word Range for the first time; he was originally attracted to words because of their shapes, as he is dyslexic. Brymer Jones describes working with clay, shape and form as a natural affinity, as a result of his condition.

Brymer Jones also works as Head of Design for MAKE International. In this role he collaborates with other designers including Jane Foster, Scion Living, Hokolo and Becky Baur.
