Starting your day off with a smile doesn’t involve a huge amount of rocket science but like mindfulness itself it does need a bit of patience and persistence. The key thing is setting up new habits and sticking to them every day, even on the weekend.

Do you overanalyse every conversation? (non-judgement part 3) Feb 27, 2021
    Show notes

Have you ever had a conversation, maybe with your co-worker or a friend, and they’ve been a bit abrupt? And you’ve thoughts afterwards, “what was that about? Are they annoyed at me?” We can get swept away by that anxiety or anger and not see what’s really going on - but it's possible to experience what’s happening without needing to react to it, without needing to do anything or, critically, without needing to put our spin on it.

How to handle criticism (non-judgement part 2) Feb 20, 2021
    Show notes

How do you feel when someone criticises you? Maybe it prompts you to start beating yourself up. Nobody likes to be criticised, especially if you have perfectionist tendencies. But unless you listen to criticism, it makes it harder to grow and learn. The golden rule is to treat yourself with kindness, even if you think you’ve made a mistake. Non-judgement is key in mindfulness and you might feel upset with yourself or unhappy with the other person. You don’t have to take a view of yourself or them - accept that they’re feeling the way they are without judging and your own feelings in the same way.

How to stop judging yourself (non-judgement part 1) Feb 13, 2021
    Show notes

Have you ever remembered something embarrassing that you’ve done and thought “you idiot”? Or worse? Everyone does to some extent - its very ingrained in us to regret things from the past, to see ourselves as not meeting some standard and as a result we feel miserable and anxious. Mindfulness can help - non-judgement is one of the key pillars and this episode talks about how we can reduce the harm self-criticism does to us.

The cure for loneliness Feb 06, 2021

Thich Nhat Hanh calls loneliness the suffering of our time, that we can be in a crowd of people but still feel alone, all of us lonely together. That feeling is something that we're afraid of - the fear of loneliness can be worse than the feeling itself, resulting in us trying to distract ourselves with other things. Practicing compassion is the most important way to tend to our loneliness - when we accept our difficult feelings and work on our peace, we start to really see the everyday suffering of other people and feel compelled to help that person, even if it's just listening deeply without judgement. When you really listen and allow someone to empty their heart, that's when you can really make a human connection.

Mindfulness is all about applying 100% of your attention to whatever you’re doing - most weeks we do a guided meditation, focusing on our breath, verses, images, body etc. Doing a little of that kind of formal practice each day is important to see the full benefits, but the other way to develop your practice is simply being present in your everyday life.

Comparing yourself to others is unhealthy - life doesn't need to be a competition Jan 23, 2021

Everyone compares themselves to others to some extent but when it plays on our thoughts a lot this can really impact on our wellbeing. The evidence on this has been around since the 1950s - people have always used their relative position against other people as a way of evaluating themselves. Its probably a natural part of the human experience, but the problem arises when we’re constantly aware of what other people have and what we don’t have, making us unhappy; applying mindful awareness to our competitive energy can transform it and help us to feel grateful for what we have.

Even if you’re experienced in meditation it’s always useful to apply your beginners mind and return to the fundamentals. f you’re new to mindfulness it’s good to practice these basics regularly to get yourself into a routine to see the full benefits. Focusing 100% of our attention on whatever we’re doing - whether your breath, your body, your posture, your thoughts, your feelings - is the fundamental principle of mindfulness; it's not about trying to clear your mind, not about trying to be calm or happy. Letting go of any expectations you have for meditation can help you to make the most of the practice.
