    Matthew Smith, PhD, professor in the University of Michigan School of Social Work, talks about his research and shares resources for individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities who are seeking employment, including the Level Up Employment Skills Simulation Lab and the Job Interview Training for Transition-Age Youth. In response to the need for more accessible ways for individuals with disabilities to secure employment, Smith founded the Level Up Lab which helps bridge the equity gap in employment opportunities for underserved groups.

    Addressing the Inequity of Access in Health Professions for People with Disabilities Oct 12, 2022

    Lisa Meeks, PhD, discusses her work and research on improving access to medical education for learners with disabilities and reducing health care disparities in patients with disabilities. Meeks is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Learning Health Sciences and Family Medicine at Michigan Medicine and the founder and director of the Doctors with Disabilities Initiative As an administrative leader and researcher, Meeks helps inform policy and best practice in the area of disability inclusion for medical education, training, and practice.

    Puerto Rican Opinion Lab: Understanding How US Policies Affect Islanders Oct 01, 2022
    Show notes Mara Ostfeld, associate faculty director at Poverty Solutions, assistant research scientist at the Ford School of Public Policy, research director at the Center for Racial Justice, and faculty lead for the Detroit Metro Area Community Study, focuses her research on understanding the relationship between race, gender, media, and public opinion. This week, Ostfeld joined Michigan Minds to discuss a study that surveys residents of Puerto Rico to better understand their opinions. Ostfeld explains that the lack of existing data makes the initiative more important than ever, especially with the complications created by Hurricane Fiona.

    Examining Factors that Promote Healthy Development for Latinx Adolescents Sep 21, 2022
    Show notes Fernanda Cross, PhD, joins this episode of Michigan Minds during Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month to discuss her research examining family and cultural factors that promote a healthy development for Latinx adolescents, and various ways to learn about National Hispanic Heritage Month. As an assistant professor at the U-M School of Social Work, Cross’ research utilizes a strength-based approach to look at factors that promote healthy development and mitigate the risk of poor psychological and/or educational outcomes for Latinx adolescents and families. Her work also examines the impact of documentation status on the family.

    Joe Himle, associate dean for faculty affairs and Howard V. Brabson Collegiate Professor of Social Work, is a mental health intervention researcher. He works to design, develop, and test mental health interventions with a focus on those who have limited access to interventions including racially and economically underserved populations. Himle, who is also a professor of psychiatry in the U-M Medical School, joins Michigan Minds to talk about his research designing and developing lost-cost and accessible anxiety interventions.
