This week on Melanin Mayhem:In Alabama, they called him Reverend… but he didn't have a pulpit. But Rev. Willie Maxwell was stacking bodies and cashing checks. Family members kept dropping like flies, and somehow the “Voodoo Preacher” always had an insurance policy ready to cash in.

Was it voodoo? Was it hustle? Or was it just cold-blooded murder wrapped in a church robe? For years, Willie Maxwell played the system — untouchable, unstoppable, and surrounded by whispers of black magic and deep-country curses.

But karma don’t miss. One funeral turned into front-row vengeance when someone decided to handle the Reverend’s “last sermon” himself… in front of a packed house.

Tap in as we dissect the twisted shyster of a man who turned faith into a fatal hustle and see how the so-called “Voodoo Preacher” finally met his match.

Two men. Two families. Two devastating killing sprees separated by more than 40 years.

In this episode of Melanin Mayhem, we examine the cases of Romeo Nance, the 23-year-old Illinois man linked to the 2024 Joliet mass shooting, and King Edward Bell, an Indianapolis father whose 1981 family massacre became one of the city’s most disturbing crimes.

Both cases involve men who turned violence toward the people closest to them, but the circumstances, warning signs, motives, and aftermath could not be more different. From domestic conflict and mental health concerns to prior violence, manhunts, courtroom battles, and unanswered questions, these stories show just how complicated familicide and mass murder can be.

This is not just about what happened. It’s about what came before, what investigators uncovered afterward, and the questions that still remain.

There are some things Black folks just know we don’t do.

Except… sometimes we do.

This week on Melanin Mayhem, Your Favorite Country Girl is calling an audible and tackling one of the most uncomfortable myths in the Black community: Black people don’t die by suicide by hanging.

Our history gives us very good reason to question a Black person found hanging from a tree. But when does healthy skepticism become an unwillingness to accept evidence? And on the flip side, when should we refuse to accept a quick explanation when the investigation leaves far too many questions behind?

We’re looking at several real cases involving Black men, women and teenagers whose deaths sparked everything from unanswered questions and independent autopsies to family investigations, public outrage—and, in some instances, evidence that challenged what people desperately wanted to believe.

Then we’re opening up another uncomfortable conversation: what does it mean to be Black in predominantly white spaces when something goes terribly wrong?

This episode isn’t about paranoia. It’s about history, evidence, instinct, safety—and knowing the difference between something doesn’t feel right and something doesn’t add up.

Because sometimes the official story deserves another look.

And sometimes… the evidence really does say what we don't want it to say.

This week on Melanin Mayhem, we’re heading to Maryland for the unbelievable story of Lawrence Banks Sr., later known as Malik Samartaney—a man whose violent history stretched across decades, jurisdictions, relationships, and more trips through the criminal justice system than anybody with his track record should have been allowed.

Banks could work, charm, marry, build relationships and blend right back into society. But behind that smooth-talking exterior was a disturbing pattern of violence that began in the 1970s and refused to stay buried.

Arrests. Prison. Parole. Protective orders. Murder investigations. More prison. More freedom.

And somehow, the door just kept revolving.

By the time authorities finally stopped Lawrence Banks for good, the trail behind him raised one maddening question:

How many chances does one dangerous man get?

This week, Noir Nation, we’re unpacking the decades-long criminal history of Malik Samartaney AKA Lawrence Banks Sr.—and trust me, you’re going to be yelling at your speakers.

This week, Your Favorite Country Girl is headed to 1990s Chicago, where the Englewood neighborhood had more than enough mayhem to go around.

Hubert Geralds Jr. had been in and out of trouble since his teenage years, but petty crime was only the beginning. After landing in Chicago and making himself comfortable at his sister’s house, Geralds graduated from neighborhood nuisance to something far more sinister. When a horrifying discovery in a backyard trash bin brought police knocking, one investigation suddenly became much bigger than anybody expected.

But in a city where vulnerable Black women were disappearing and multiple predators were roaming the same streets, figuring out who did what wasn’t nearly as simple as getting a confession.

This week on Melanin Mayhem, we’re talking serial murder, survival, questionable police work, and one sister who apparently said, not in MY house.

Come on, Noir Nation. We’re going to Englewood—and baby, it is MESSY.

Two spree killers. One last name. No relation... at least I certainly hope not.

This week on Melanin Mayhem, we're diving into the chilling cases of Arthur James Davis and Leon Davis Jr.—two melanated spree killers separated by four decades, hundreds of miles, and completely different motives, yet forever connected by a name they happen to share with your favorite country girl.

The Wilkes-Barre Massacre was one of the deadliest mass killings in Pennsylvania history. In 1982, a troubled corrections officer with a violent past and growing paranoid delusions turned two quiet neighborhoods into crime scenes within hours. But the massacre was only the beginning of a legal battle over mental illness, the death penalty, and whether the warning signs were ignored. This week, Melanin Mayhem examines the life, crimes, and decades-long aftermath of George Emil Banks—one of America's most disturbing mass murderers. Stay connected:
