84: What you should(n't) do in your business (or life!) Oct 18, 2021

This episode is a bit of a rant— I am so frustrated seeing folks on the internet telling others what to do. The truth is they have no idea how you operate, what your privilege and access is, your mental and physical health, your trauma response, how your brain works, or more. I break down why this frustrates me so much, and how to avoid it.

How no one can or should give general advice to an audience knowing what each individual should do
How folks giving generalized advice don’t know your personal unique situation, yet tell you what to do
Why it’s problematic that often people giving advice on the internet come from massive privilege and don’t acknowledge that

There’s a lot of talk about anti-capitalist business in my communities, and while I have been embodying some of the principles for some time now, I built IMBY with anti-capitalism as a core value. 49: Zero waste is a scam (solo series) Sep 25, 2019

Okay, I know this might be a bit controversial. And I am a big advocate for reducing waste, of course. The problem is, I think the way zero waste is presented doesn’t present or allow for the complexity of the situation. We are often pigeon-holed into picking the “non-plastic” item in order to keep up with what’s presented as best for the planet, but there are so many other considerations at stake. 30: The history and heritage of artisan fashion and why fast fashion is a threat, and getting started with ethical fashion with Livia Firth of Eco-Age and Marianne Hernandez May 15, 2019

This episode is a bit different than usual— I had the opportunity to interview ethical and sustainable fashion advocate and entrepreneur Livia Firth, Co-founder and Creative Director of Eco-Age and founder of the Green Carpet Challenge and Marianne Hernandez, President of PACUNAM, the foundation for maya cultural and natural heritage, and decided to record it for the podcast! The two of them partnered with a handful of other individuals to create a short documentary, Fashionscapes: Artisans Guatemaya, which “tells the story of the rich heritage and craftsmanship of Guatemala’s 1 million artisans.” We sat down after the premiere at Parsons and they answered my questions about the film and their views on ethical, sustainable, and artisan fashion.
