Is It Time to Return to the Gold Standard? Mar 16, 2025
    Show notes

As gold prices hit an all-time high, investors are scrambling for certainty in an uncertain world. But what’s causing all this instability? In this episode of Mark and Pete, we break down the history of the gold standard in Britain and America, exploring how it shaped economic policy and why both nations abandoned it.
With Donald Trump reintroducing tariffs to protect American industry, global markets are reacting with volatility. Tariffs disrupt international trade, fueling inflation and economic unpredictability. So, if gold represents stability, should the world return to the gold standard to restore certainty in global finance?
Join Mark for a humorous poetic take on the gold debate before Pete dissects the petrodollar system, explaining how it keeps the US dollar dominant and whether its decline signals an economic shift. With China, Russia, and other BRICS nations exploring alternatives to the dollar-dominated trade system, could a gold-backed currency be the future?
Tune in for sharp insights, lively debate, and a fresh look at how gold, tariffs, and economic uncertainty shape the world today.

Britain’s Welfare Budget Cuts: Too Little, Too Late? Mar 10, 2025
    Show notes

Rachel Reeves, Austerity, and the Future of Public Spending:
Rachel Reeves is taking Labour in a bold new direction—one that looks a lot like austerity. With billions in welfare cuts on the table, including restrictions on disability benefits and reductions in civil service jobs, the Chancellor is making it clear that fiscal responsibility is her top priority. But is this a necessary course correction, or a political miscalculation that could alienate voters?
In this episode, we break down the details of the proposed £6 billion in welfare savings, the potential freezing of Personal Independence Payments (PIP), and the restructuring of Universal Credit. We’ll also examine how these policies compare to past Conservative-led austerity measures—and why Reeves’ approach may be even tougher than Trump’s, who largely avoided welfare cuts.
Is this a strategic move to reassure markets and prove Labour’s economic credibility, or will it spark a backlash from both the public and Labour’s own MPs? We explore the political risks, economic impact, and whether these cuts come too little, too late.
🔹 Tune in for an in-depth discussion on Britain’s economic future, fiscal policy, and the shifting identity of the Labour Party.

    Show notes

In this episode of the Mark and Pete Show, we delve into the intricate world of single malt whisky, focusing on recent and historical controversies that have shaped the industry. We begin with the current debate ignited by the English Whisky Guild’s application for Geographical Indication (GI) status for “single malt English whisky.” This move has faced strong opposition from the Scotch Whisky Association and Scottish politicians, who argue it undermines traditional Scotch whisky production and could devalue the esteemed “single malt” designation. We explore the nuances of this dispute, including differing production standards and the potential impact on Scotland’s £5.4 billion whisky industry. Additionally, we revisit the early 2000s controversy surrounding Cardhu distillery’s transition from a single malt to a blended “pure malt,” a decision that led to significant industry backlash and discussions about transparency in whisky labeling. Join us as we uncover vital and amusing facts about these pivotal moments in whisky history, offering insights into the passion and politics that continue to influence this beloved spirit.
