Dr. James Hollis - The Jungian Way To Hear Your Calling Mar 08, 2022
    Show notes

I've waited a long time for this one! Deeply honored to have spoken with Dr. James Hollis, one of the foremost Jungian analysts. Ever. Period. This conversation focused almost entirely on men and their relationship to fear, women, purpose, direction, and what Jung had to say about all of them. An hour isn't nearly enough for such a heavy conversation, so he'll be returning in the near future. If you've ever been curious about the Jungian approach to therapy, have a listen.

James Hollis, Ph. D., was born in Springfield, Illinois, and graduated from Manchester University in 1962 and Drew University in 1967. He taught Humanities for 26 years in various colleges and universities before retraining as a Jungian analyst at the Jung Institute of Zurich, Switzerland (1977-82). He is presently a licensed Jungian analyst in private practice in Washington, D.C. He served as Executive Director of the Jung Educational Center in Houston, Texas for many years and was Executive Director of the Jung Society of Washington until 2019. He now serves on the JSW Board of Directors. He is a retired Senior Training Analyst for the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, was first Director of Training of the Philadelphia Jung Institute, and is Vice-President Emeritus of the Philemon Foundation. Additionally, he is a Professor of Jungian Studies for Saybrook University of San Francisco/Houston.
He lives with his wife Jill, an artist and retired therapist, in Washington, DC. Together they have three living children and eight grand-children.
He has written a total of seventeen books, which have been translated into Swedish, Russian, German, Spanish, French, Hungarian, Portuguese, Turkish, Italian, Korean, Finnish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Farsi, Japanese, Greek, Chinese, Serbian, Latvian, Ukranian and Czech.
The next book, The Broken Mirror: Refracted Visions of Ourselves, comes out this year.

Duey Freeman - Gestalt Therapy, What Men Struggle With, And How We Protect Ourselves Feb 28, 2022
    Show notes

Forgive the occasional sound blips. Sometimes Zoom behaves badly! Whether you've just dipped your toes into therapy or have been a long-time adherent, have a listen to this. I love Duey's no-nonsense yet compassionate approach. It's rooted in connection and relationship—a result of his extensive training in gestalt therapy. We cover what gestalt therapy is, what men typically struggle with and why, and how we're all just trying to protect ourselves.

Duey Freeman, MA, LPC is co-founder of the Gestalt Equine Institute of the Rockies, director of the Gestalt Institute of the Rockies, and owner of his psychotherapy private practice. After teaching for 24 years at Naropa University he has decided to move in a more creative direction. Most recently and in collaboration with Kimberly Beck M Ed, he has created: The Coming Home Project and Relational Rewilding Retreats.

As a licensed psychotherapist, teacher, and consultant, Duey has extensive training and experience in gestalt therapy, equine therapy, family therapy, bioenergetIcs, and counseling with children and adolescents. In 1982, Duey joined and revived the Gestalt Institute of the Rockies, he co-founded the Gestalt Equine Institute of the Rockies in 2008. This institute sprang out of the need for thorough training in working relationally with horses as therapeutic partners. GEIR is one of the only Institutes that require competence therapeutically as well as competence in relational horsemanship.

Duey joined Naropa in 1992 and has been extensively involved in the creation of the Gestalt, Human Development, and Family Systems programs. He has helped to develop the Equine section of the Wilderness Therapy certification and degree. He taught for the University of Northern Colorado, traveling across Colorado teaching and working with schools systems supporting teachers to better understand and work with the children they teach. Prior to working in higher education, Duey was a therapist in the school system and a principal of a school.

Throughout the year, Duey partners with professional therapists and skilled horsemen and women throughout the country and world to provide psychotherapy, Gestalt Equine Psychotherapy, parenting and human development workshops, and Relational Horsemanship classes. Some of Duey's partners include Joan Rieger, Duane Mullner, Erika Friess, Megan Powers, Rosemary Wyndham-Jones, Rob Pliskin, Kristi Moon, Kimberly Beck, and Amy and Steve LeSatz.

Dr. Shy Krug - Navigating A Healthy Sex Life Feb 21, 2022
    Show notes

This was such a good conversation! Dr. Krug has to be one of the most engaged and informative guys I've had on when it comes to sexual health. We cover the mind's role in healthy sex, balancing what you can and can't control in your sexual health, the surprisingly critical role of uncertainty and anxiety in sex, the physiology of erections and orgasm, how porn addiction works, the list goes on.

Dr. Shy Krug is a Clinical Psychologist and AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He specializes in sex therapy and sexual health in addition to sexual addiction. He also specializes in trauma, depression, anxiety, and couples counseling. His work has also led to a deep understanding of how mental illness can impact changes in arousal or sexual function

Dr. Krug mainly utilizes a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness. He is also trained in Gottman’s Method of Couples Counseling, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE).

To ensure that an individual’s sexual dysfunction is not being caused by a medical issue, Dr. Krug takes a team-oriented approach and works closely with a team of medical providers. When working with a client who has a history of trauma, he also discusses the challenges of trauma-focused work and lets them know that it is common to feel more distress in the beginning of treatment to ensure they are ready to start talking about their traumatic experience(s).

He has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a B.A. in psychology with a minor in biology from Yeshiva University.

Dr. Carl Erik Fisher - The Complex History Of Addiction Feb 14, 2022
    Show notes

It goes without saying that the more informed you are on the nature of addiction, the easier it is to see and break the patterns that trap you or the people you care about—addiction can be a LOT more subtle and nuanced than you think. So this week, I asked Dr. Carl Erik Fisher to dig into his new book, The Urge: Our History Of Addiction. It's a profoundly empathetic, personal, and intelligent book, and if you like this episode you'll want to check it out.

We cover how addiction was perceived by ancient cultures and philosophers, how societies and communities have responded from Ancient Grecians to Native Americans, why community plays a huge role, the difficulty of boundaries and interventions, and a lot more.

Carl Erik Fisher is an addiction physician and bioethicist. He is an assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University, where he works in the Division of Law, Ethics, and Psychiatry. He also maintains a private psychiatry practice focusing on complementary and integrative approaches to treating addiction. His writing has appeared in Nautilus, Slate, and Scientific American MIND, among other outlets.

The Boys Are Not Alright Feb 10, 2022
    Show notes

We all crave meaning, purpose, and feeling like we're needed. It's deeply important for anyone's mental health. But for a significant number of men, it simply isn't happening. There are all sorts of reasons for this, and there's no easy answer, but it's something that genuinely worries me. This week, I'm thinking out loud about what's going on for younger men and what they can do to find that purpose and meaning for themselves.

Dr. Martin Shaw - The Depth And Value In Myth Feb 07, 2022
    Show notes

How do I sum up this conversation? Because we could have talked for days. Dr. Shaw's work is incredibly powerful, so get ready for a very depth-oriented and intense conversation. For example, Dr. Shaw and I cover the real meaning of blessing and the importance of being defeated—not winning. The power of story and myth, comfort versus shelter, and how it all relates to how we're living now.

Martin Shaw is widely regarded as one of the most exciting teachers of the mythic imagination. Author of the award-winning Mythteller trilogy (A Branch from the Lightning Tree, Snowy Tower, Scatterlings), he founded the Oral Tradition and Mythic Life courses at Stanford University, and is director of the Westcountry School of Myth in the UK. He has introduced thousands of people to mythology, and for twenty years, Shaw has been a wilderness rites of passage guide, working with at-risk youth, those who are unwell, returning veterans as well as many women and men seeking a deeper life.

His translations of Gaelic poetry and folklore (with Tony Hoagland) have been published in Orion Magazine, Poetry International, and Poetry Magazine. Dr. Shaw's work has received top praise from the likes of Malidoma Somé, Stephen Jenkinson, Coleman Barks, Robert Densmore, and Robert Bly. His essay and conversation with Ai Weiwei on myth and migration was released by the Marciano Arts foundation.

Traver Boehm - Victimhood, Incels, And Modern Masculine Culture Jan 31, 2022
    Show notes

This week isn't so much an interview. Instead, a long-ranging conversation with an old friend focused around some of the more, uh, volatile aspects of modern masculine culture. The functionality of incel ideology, redpill rhetoric, the rise of victimhood narratives on all sides. In short, we're talking about some heavy stuff. Expect an open dialogue and frank opinions.

Traver Boehm knows men. How they think, what’s behind their behavior, and most importantly — their unique challenges in the modern landscape.

Traver is the the founder of the UNcivilized Men’s Movement, the fastest growing men’s movement in the world. He is the author of Today I Rise, and Man UNcivilized as well as a two time TEDx speaker, men’s coach and podcaster.

Drawing upon an eclectic background ranging from professional bodyguard and Mixed Martial Arts to a Master’s Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine and meditation, Traver counsels men, women, and couples on how to better understand men’s mental health and relationship difficulties.

Although he’s not quite sure how to feel about the title, he has been dubbed, “The Man Whisperer” as he has the unique ability to speak to men in a way they can hear and understand.
