Manga Mavericks EP. 12: Anime Expo Happened... Jul 13, 2016
    Show notes

...And boy was it ever big! Lots of hot and exciting news came out of AE this year, and this week your titular mavericks, Colton and Sid, run down each juicy bit of licensing news and other cool stuff looming on the horizon. But that's not all! We also discuss some other fresh developments, from the revamped Shonen Jump website, to Kodansha re-licensing former Del Ray titles for digital distribution, and perhaps the biggest news of all, Bleach finally actually decisively definitively inexorably assuredly honest-to-god totally ending soon! For reals this time! Lastly, we answer a Q&A asking us why we love* Rurouni Kenshin, leading to a pretty passionate discussion that's not to be missed! NOTE: The character whose name I keep forgetting in the Kenshin discussion is Kujiranami. Also, he has a cannon for a hand, not an axe. Not sure how I mis-remembered something like that. ^^, *Editor's Note, 2020: This podcast was recorded over a year before Nobuhiro Watsuki was arrested for possession of child pornography. As such, please keep in mind that our opinions of Watsuki and Kenshin have soured since the recording of this episode, and we no longer stand by much of what we said about them here. Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha. If there’s something you want to ask that’s too big to tweet, drop us a line in the comments below, or e-mail us at mangamavericks@gmail.com! Thanks for listening!

Manga Mavericks EP. 11: We Finally Read Tokyo Ghoul Jun 29, 2016
    Show notes

It's been ten long episodes in the making, but the promised day has finally come! After weeks of saying we'd get around to it, we finally read Tokyo Ghoul! Well, okay, we didn't read the whole thing. I got through about half of it and Colton only read the first volume. So yeah, I know it might not exactly be what you were expecting or wanted, but the reality is we put everything into making this episode. We didn't try to kickstart it, or set up a Patreon for extra money. We put it all in. So, for now, this is what you hear and this is what you get, for the Manga Mavericks podcast. But, again, we hope that if this is well received, there'll be follow-ups. Because I'll tell you what, I'm not getting my Tokyo Ghoul-podcasting fill. And at the end of the day, even if it's not perfect, it's better than nothing. Besides, listening to this episode will definitely be better time spent than playing Mighty No. 9, and it didn't even cost you a dime (or however much money people wasted backed on that crap)! But seriously, this is a good episode. So good that we had to cut out a 20+ minute rant discussion on when Nisekoi will end for the sake of time! If we had to take out something THAT juicy, then exactly what mouthwatering morsels of manga chatter have we keep in? Join your titular mavericks Colton and Sid as we salivate over a Tokyo Restaurant serving Tonio's full course from Diamond is Unbreakable, speculate on a potential live-action Gintama theatrical film. celebrate Kochikame returning to japanese airwaves with a new tv anime, and accentuate that we're not filthy perverts while discussing the Legend of the Overfiend kickstarter! Awaiting at the end of it all is, of course, the pièce de résistance, our Tokyo Ghoul discussion! Did we like this broken down, broken-down world, or did we laugh without seeing a thing? There's only one way to find out, so dig in! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha. If there’s something you want to ask that’s too big to tweet, tell us, oh tell us, the way it works with a line in the comments below, or e-mail us at mangamavericks@gmail.com! Thanks for listening!

Manga Mavericks EP. 9: Your Favorite Character Dressed in Drag Jun 01, 2016
    Show notes

Wow, it's been a while huh? Almost a month! Man, you guys must have been devastated, going without hearing our pristine sexy voices for so long. Sobbing in a corner like Sugao from Shonen Ashibe and hugging your makeshift Colton and/or Sid body pillows tightly, impatiently tapping the refresh button hping, ever so desperately, for a new episode to load. But that episode never came. So you sat there, wallowing in a mess of piss and tears, eyes red from sleepless nights waiting, ears perked for any hint of our beautiful voices. Your friends and family worried. You'd become a podcast-aholic. You needed your fix, and Manga Mavericks was your drug or choice. Finally, enough was enough. Your family put you in therapy. You resisted at first, but slowly, the therapist gained your trust. You talked. You learned things. About yourself, your problems. You joined Podcastaholics Anonymous, and over time, you got over your addiction. You were free. FREE! ...Or so you thought. The addiction could only be suppressed, not overcome. Deep inside, you still hungered. You re-listened to older episodes, but it wasn't enough. You needed more. Desperate, you tried other manga podcasts, but they didn't satisfy. But you kept listening. You started listening to two at once, then three, then four, then more. Just lying there, engulfed in your insidiously comfy reclining armchair, your life slowly wasting away from a sedentary lifestyle devoid of emotional fulfillment. But you decided enough is enough. "Screw podcasts, I'll watch anime instead!" Weak and malnourished, you blindly clicked upon a random link to a random show on Crunchyroll, hoping you'd land on something light and charming to make the pain go away. And what do you know, you got a comedy. "Rock Lee's Springtime of Youth." Huh. Well, Rock Lee is a pretty cool character, so a show about him show be pretty decent. You hit an ep up. You watch. But...what's this? Dogs pissing on people's heads? Characters steeping in piles of poop? Is this what's become of anime comedy? Then, it happens. A simple image. Rock Lee dressed in women's clothes. Ten Ten makes a big deal of it. Something along the lines of "Oh Lee, you so silly for dressing like a girl. You're a MAN! HUR DUR DUR!!!" You stare, trying to process the incomprehensible scene before you. Then you realize - this is the joke. No, not the fact Lee is dressed in drag and that's somehow supposed to be funny in of itself. That's lame. No, the joke is your life. You're a twenty-something jobless fatass spending your days listening to podcasts and watching crappy chibi comedy spinoffs of overrated shonen action shows. Now, THAT's funny! You snort. Chuckle. Laugh. Laughter that pierces the walls of your decrepit domicile, frightening neighbors who've long thought your home was just an abandoned wreck waiting for demolition. You tear up, roll around the floor in a fit, unable to stop. Then, suddenly, your laughter becomes a cry. A cry for help, freedom, purpose. Ah, what a tragic life! Woe, is the Millennial! Woe, these insufferable first-world problems! Must we want so? Must our desires overwhelm our sense?! Will nothing break the death hold that our destructive desperation for endless entertainment entraps us?! But suffer no longer, my friends! Your titular mavericks Colton and Sid have returned once again to give you to low down on all the hip news and happenings in the manga world. We may have missed a week, but the industry kept on rolling, and we're here today with an extra long episode to cover all the exciting highlights that came out of May! From new manga debuts to new licenses to controversial Kickstarters, there's a lot of ground to cover and we gave ourselves a lot of time to do so. Plus, discussion of the latest Jump Start, Takuan and Batsu's Daily Demon Diary, what makes a good gag spinoff comedy, the historical and empathetic legacy of Barefoot Gen, and much, much more! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperkin

Manga Mavericks EP. 8: Meet the Fast Food Fanatics! May 04, 2016
    Show notes

Felicitations! We're the Fast Food Fanatics! We run down all the latest news and gossip in the deliciously detrimental world of flash-fried quick eats! What's cooking this week? Well, your titular fanatics Colton and Sid are full of beans and keen as mustard to shoot the breeze on some rather fishy business, including McDonald's new chicken nuggets recipe, the consequences of California's controversial $15 dollar minimum wage, why you should never ever eat at a Burger King in Brooklyn, and Chik-fil-A's oh so exclusive "invitation only" loyalty program! (Seriously, did you know about that? I go to Chik-fil-A almost every frigging day, and I've never received no red carpet treatment! "A-list membership" my ass! Screw those chicken-shit frying elitists!) Also, should millennials invest in Chipotle stock? The answer might surprise you! We might have our fingers in a lot of pies this time around, but believe me buddy, we know our onions! So let's fry some fish, and dig in to the meat of thin- WAIT A MINUTE! Don't close that tab! We aren't here to jabber about junk food. We're the mother-freaking Manga Mavericks, and as per our usual m.o., we mean to madly mutter about manga matters! Which we do after talking 10 minutes about how bad fast-food is for you, especially if you live in New York City. ...No, seriously, we're still a manga podcast! We promise! Want me to prove it to you? Well, in this installment, we commend the winners of the Tezuka Cultural Prize, ponder the practicality of Nissan's new manga-inspired Nissan Leaf model, and get excited for the upcoming documentary about Fujio Akatsuka, Makoto Raiku's new manga, the Cardcaptor Sakura sequel series, and much more! Plus, Colton drops a bombshell you'll NEVER see coming! There's no way that can be right! Can it? Also, we briefly talk about them in the episode, but I wanted to provide links to two fantastic analytical pieces on the Dragon Ball franchise I've recently gotten into. The first is the video series Dragon Ball Dissection by a Youtuber named MistareFusion, who has been going through the Dragon Ball manga from beginning to end, thoroughly breaking down each story arc with a critical lens. I've seen many attempts at a "History of Power Rangers"-esque overview of Dragon Ball from many different Youtubers, but Dragon Ball Dissection is far and away the best, not only because it bases itself on the original manga instead of the anime adaption like most others do, but also because MistareFusion focuses on analysis over recap and pulls no punches on breaking down both the series' strengths and flaws in an acute and precise manner. The second Dragon Ball analytical series I'd like to highlight is Derek Padula's brilliant Dragon Ball Culture book series. To my knowledge, Padula is the first and only professional literary Dragon Ball scholar. His books are thoroughly well-researched and written in a formal but still highly accessible manner, providing fascinating insight on the culture, themes, and history that influenced the story and world of Dragon Ball. His books so far have encompassed the entirety of the pre-Z era of the series, with additional books including one exploring the "Over 9000!" phenomenon, and a soulful collection of personal reflections on the series from fans all over the world aptly titled "Dragon Soul." Both MistareFusion's videos and Mr. Padula's books are excellent pieces for for any Dragon Ball fan looking to dig deeper into the essence of the franchise, and I highly recommend them. Oh, and just an FYI, in the episode we discuss Yona of the Dawn going on hiatus, which was still indefinite at the time we recorded of the episode. Since then, however, it's come to light that the series will resume this month in the 12th issue of Hana to Yume out on May 20th. Which kind of makes that whole talking point retroactively pointless, unfortunately, but that kind of thing's to be expected when you're running a bi-weekly podcast. The manga world

Manga Mavericks EP. 7: Today Crunchyroll, Tomorrow the World! Apr 23, 2016
    Show notes

The Skip Beat! Kickstarter was a success! Not only did it meet it's funding goal, but the stretch goal for a blu-ray release as well! This bodes very well for the future of crowd funding campaigns to fund other anime series that have been overlooked or were considered to be tough-sells by big-name licensors. Similarly, the Kimagure Orange Road Kickstarter is going swimmingly as well. When you think about it, it's already half-way there to reaching the goal required to get the series fully published, and there's plenty of time left. As always, I strongly encourage you to support this Kickstarter if you already haven't. Even if you don't have a lot to give, any amount you can give can make a difference. Beyond simply getting this classic title published, this Kickstarter will open up doors for similar projects and more classic or obscure manga beyond just Osamu Tezuka's works to potentially receive crowd-funding campaigns. Both the Skip Beat! and KOR campaigns' success have set great precedents that should hopefully allow a lot of titles that wouldn't or couldn't be brought over through traditional means finally see a western release. These are exciting times, and I'm crossing a fingers a few currently unlicensed favorites of mine will be lucky enough to receive similar treatment one day very soon. Enough with the pitch, let's get on with the show! Join your titular Manga Mavericks, Colton and Sid, as we once again dive into the fast-paced and sexy world of manga news! And this episode covers some BIG news, presenting many fascinating questions worth pondering. What are the ramifications of Kadokawa's partnerships with Crunchyroll and Yen Press? Will the Death Note live-action movie actually be good? When will Colton and Sid finally stop going off tangent and answer the Q&A already?! Plus, rundowns of the latest NYT Top Selling Manga List, the March Bookscan Top 20 Graphic Novels List, and lots of licensing news! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha. Manga Mavericks EP. 6: Diesel Is Not Crash Apr 06, 2016
    Show notes

The new anime season is upon us, and I'm pretty satisfied by it so far. JoJo's and Ushio & Tora are back and better than ever, and My Hero Academia's much anticipated premiere was fairly solid. But can you believe just how many shows are coming out this season? Last I checked, we're getting around forty in total. That's crazy. I know the anime industry has to contract sometime, but every season it continues to put out more and more stuff. And of all of these new shows, how many stay memorable? Only a handful, if even that. Either way, I'll never be one of those people that can somehow keep up with every show in a season beginning to end. Even with JoJo's I'm likely to fall off for a few weeks before picking it back up again. But we're not here to talk about anime; we're a manga podcast after all! Join your titular mavericks once again as they debate about whether it makes sense or not for Viz to run the Assassination Classroom bonus chapters, get excited over the prospect of a Shonen Jump Cinematic Universe, and are overwhelmed by the sheer amount of new licenses announced by Dark Horse, Yen Press, Viz, and especially Kodansha. Plus, we have a special topic on bad manga-inspired comic adaptions, taking on the recent Astro Boy-inspired Image comic Circuit Breaker and the notorious JoJo's Bizarre Adventure rip-off Diesel. Were these comics simply paying homage to great manga, or are they cheap crash-ins on the anime craze? You'll have to listen to find out! Or you can read and judge them for yourselves...but trust us, listening to this podcast is a FAR better use of your time. Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha. Manga Mavericks EP. 5: Colton Loves Yu-Gi-Oh! More Than His Fam Mar 22, 2016
    Show notes

Guys, we have to apologize. We totally forgot to mention all the new manga releases coming out in March on the last podcast! I know how disappointed you all must have been. I mean, how else were you guys supposed to know what's coming out? Look it up yourself? Outrageous! There, that should cover it. We'll remember to cover April's releases properly in the next episode! So with that out of the way, what's in store for the Manga Mavericks this week? Well, as usual, Colton and Sid have got the latest NYT Top Selling Manga List and plenty of news to discuss, and a whole lot of it is Weekly Shonen Jump related! If March is Anime Madness, then April has got to be Jump Madness, because there's a lot to look forward to from the imprint next month, particularly the long-awaited return of Hunter X Hunter! How long will the series run for this time? One chapter, two...gasp, maybe we'll get three whole new chapters! How very exciting! Also, Colton gushes over the upcoming Yu-Gi-Oh! movie, and reveals that he takes a series about a children's card game very, very seriously. Almost unhealthily seriously. Maybe disturbingly so...

4: Good For You, Seven Seas! Mar 10, 2016
    Show notes

Anime Madness is starting up over at Rightstuf again, and this year I'm in it to win it! Sure, I lost miserably in the years before, but as they always say the third time's the charm, right? That said, I'm still mulling over my choices. I mean, Evangelion vs. One-Punch Man? A match-up like that could go either way! How can I possibly quantify and compare otakus obsessive love for two equally and insanely popular anime franchises? Well, leave that for me to worry about, because it's time for another episode of Manga Mavericks! Join your titular mavericks, Colton and Sid, as we go over the latest New York Times Best Selling Manga List, unintentionally patronize Seven Seas, promote the new Skip Beat! anime Indiegogo campaign, answer a Q&A about preferring omnibuses to single volumes, and rave about why you really need to watch Naoki Urasawa's manga documentary series, "Urasawa Naoki no Manben," asap! Plus, we say hello to last week's surprise Jump Start, Bye-Bye Humanity! Did we welcome it with open arms, or were we happy to rid it farewell? There's only one way to find out, so stop reading and get listening! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha. If there’s something you want to ask that’s too big to tweet, drop us a line in the comments below, or e-mail us at mangamavericks@gmail.com! Seriously, send in those Q&As! We want to get to the point where we have to make entire episodes dedicated to answering them just like all the other big anime/manga podcasts out there. That's when you know you've made it, baby!

Manga Mavericks EP. 3: I Hate It! Feb 25, 2016
    Show notes

Welcome to the third installment of the Manga Mavericks podcast! And before you ask, no, we still don't have a catchphrase. Alas, it seems some things just aren't meant to be. We've made peace with that. Well, at least Colton has. Sid's kept up at night thinking about it. It haunts his dreams. But hey, who needs sleep when there's such a wide array of manga news and tidbits to discuss! Join your titular mavericks, Colton and Sid, as we give a rundown of the latest New York Times Best Selling Manga and BookScan's Top 20 Graphic Novels lists, talk about the impending endings of a few pretty prominent series, and discuss Weekly Shonen Jump's latest Jump Start, Kimetsu no Yaiba! Plus, Colton convinced Sid to finally read Sket Dance, and they chat about the first couple of volumes, the noticeable similarities it shares with Gintama, and how shockingly sad a certain someone's backstory was! Who would've ever guessed a character with such a silly quirk would have such a devastating reason for it? Who are we talking about? Did Sid like the series? Does the title of this episode answer that question? Listen on and find out! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha. If there’s something you want to ask that’s too big to tweet, drop us a line in the comments below, or e-mail us at mangamavericks@gmail.com! Thanks for listening!
