    20 Years of InuYasha: A Retrospective Nov 13, 2016
    Show notes

On November 13th 1996, Rumiko Takahashi's feudal fairy tale InuYasha began its serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday, where it would continue to run for a nearly 12-year run. From the very beginning, InuYasha was wildly popular and successful both in Japan and internationally, and its popularity and influence on anime fandom are still indelible nearly a decade since it's conclusion. In honor of 20 years of InuYasha, Manga Mavericks' resident Rumic World expert LumRanmaYasha has recruited their brother and previous guest VlordGTZ to discuss the legacy of the series. We explore the origins of why InuYasha was created, how several characters came to be, and the history of InuYasha in North America. Then, we answer some Q&As asked of us by fans on Reddit, and discuss our favorite moments from the series, as well as commenting on Rumiko Takahashi's own. So sit, boy, and listen to us talk about everyone's favorite dog-eared half-demon. Don't worry, we promise it won't take as long as actually reading/watching the series! Disclaimer: You may hear a lot of sirens going off in the background of this episode. Let's just say the neighborhood I live in is always very noisy. Normally, we've been able to edit them out, but this week was a no-go, unfortunately. Just a heads up for those of you wondering what the heck that's about. Editor's Note, 2020: In this episode, Lum repeatedly refers to themselves with an epithet that includes an unfortunate slur. We were much younger and not as socially and critically conscious back then as we are now, and in retrospect, we find the use of this pejorative in a self-deprecating sense excruciatingly in poor taste and cringey. We humbly ask you to keep in mind that the use of this term in this podcast does not reflect upon what we consider acceptable to say now. Manga Mavericks EP. 19: I'll Get Around To It...Someday Oct 20, 2016
    Show notes

I'm not watching any anime this season. I'm not watching anything that's airing on TV (except South Park). The time I have for recreation has become limited, and so the amount of what I can watch has become more select by necessity. I don't have the time to watch an entire season of Luke Cage on Netflix, or the four hour-long DC shows airing weekly on the CW, much less the dozens of new anime that came out this season. These days, after exhausting myself from long hours of work on little sleep, I'd rather listen to podcasts or curl up in bed with a good manga to read. Does that mean that I'll never get back into TV and anime? Not necessarily. I'm interested in checking out some of those things. Basically, I'll get around to it...someday. Luckily, you're not here to see us talk about TV or anime, but manga! And this week, the Manga Mavericks have A LOT to discuss. Not talking about news for a month will do that to us! So, as you can imagine, this episode is extra long as your titular mavericks, Colton and Sid, will be joined by some special guests and go over all the new manga licenses Kodansha and Viz announced at Comic Con, Takashi Miike directing a series of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable live-action films, MediBang's exciting new manga contest in collaboration with Weekly Shonen Magazine, among a plethora of other news! Plus, I dish the dirt on my New York Comic Con experience and meeting Yusei Matsui, and we have a lengthy and thorough discussion on Shueshia's new Dragon Ball-focused department, Dragon Ball Room! Do we think it's a good or bad sign for the franchise? Is Trunks' hair pink? Cause...it's blue in Super. It's super confusing. Super is finally being simulcast on Crunchyroll starting this Saturday, btw. Which I think is just super. It also makes our discussion on Dragon Ball Room super timely! Get it? Because the show is called...oh, just listen to the damn episode. Trust me, it's super. Podcast Breakdown: 00:22 - Introducing Our “Special Guests” 10:55 - Amalgam of Distortion Discussion 22:23 - Sid’s New York Comic Con 2016 Experience 41:58 - New Spice & Wolf Novels Are On the Way! 43:48 - Kodansha USA’s TEN New Manga Licenses! 50:22 - Viz Media’s New Manga Licenses! 56:20 - RWBY is Coming to Weekly Shonen Jump! 1:07:35 - NYT Best Selling Manga List: Week of October 2nd-8th 1:18:00 - Monthly Bookscan List: September 2016 1:20:05 - The U.S. Manga Market is Now Worth $85 Million USD 1:22:41 - Anime NYC Is Coming in November 2017! 1:25:08 - Osamu Akimoto Won the 64th Kan Kikuchi Prize! 1:26:08 - Nobuhiro Watsuki Is Drawing Another Rurouni Kenshin Mini-Series 1:30:53 - The Rose Of Versailles Is Also Getting Another Mini-Series 1:33:53 - Natsume Ono’s Drawing a New WebManga Called "Somewhere, Somebody Is Also Eating” 1:35:00 - A Space Brothers/Iron Man Crossover Manga Happened 1:36:57 - Takashi Miike is Directing a Live-Action JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable Film Series 1:40:25 - ReLife Is Also Getting a Live-Action Movie 1:42:40 - Kodansha Has Acquired Ichijinsha 1:44:03 - Amazon Japan Has Removed 1000 Kodansha Manga Titles From Their Kindle Service Without Warning 1:45:35 - DMP Planning a Kickstarter for Osamu Tezuka’s Under the Air and…The Crater?! 1:52:00 - MediBang and Weekly Shonen Magazine’s Manga Contest 1:55:56 - Dragon Ball Room Discussion 2:19:08 - Wrap-Up Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha. Our next Manga Fight will be centered on InuYasha to commemorate the series’ 20th anniversary, which we’ll be recording with special guest Josh Dunham on Friday, October 28th and plan to release on Sunday, November 13th. Manga Mavericks EP. 17: We Need to Read More Shoujo Manga... Sep 21, 2016
    Show notes

We talk about a top 10 shojo manga list in this episode, and we'd only read about one and a half of them. We really need to read more shojo stuff. That's why I'm glad Viz has been having a lot of digital shojo manga sales recently. I picked up the entirety of Ceres and From Far Away recently, and they've got Basara for sale right now. These sales are great if you want to get into older and out of print titles like those especially. You have to budget yourself just right if you want to get full series though. I'd love to pick up Basara, but I already blew my budget this month on Ceres and From Far Away. There's always next time, I suppose. My point is that if you really want to get into more shojo manga, trying out at least the first volume of one of the series Viz has been putting on sale every week would be a good place to start. That, or refer to the list we talk about in this episode and select a title from there. There's really a lot of variety in shojo titles that may surprise you. Last saturday was a real turning point in manga history, though. After four decades of continuous serialization, Kochikame finally ended it's run. A kudos to Akimoto-sensei for keeping a long running series going for four decades, a feat only a few other titles have done. But it's strange to live in a post-Kochikame world. Perhaps stranger if you live in Japan. After all, Kochikame was a part of the lineup for so long, it became something you took for granted. It was something you'd expect to see every week in Weekly Shonen Jump. A comforting reminder of how as much as things chance, some things stay the same. Still, all things must come to an end, and Kochikame ended on Akimoto's own terms, and during a resurgence of popularity. That's a fine way to go out. Akimoto is still kicking, though, and not done with manga yet. I really hope to see both Kochikame and his future works make their way to the west sometime in the future. Kochikame is about half of what we talk about this week, but there's plenty else we go over. This week your titular mavericks, Colton and Sid, discuss the recent two NYT Best Selling Manga Lists, debate all three of the latest Jump Starts, run down a Top 10 Shoujo Manga to recommend to men list, and unveil our exciting plans for the next episode? What could that be? Listening to the podcast will reveal all!

Manga Mavericks EP. 16: You Can Never Have Enough South Park ... Sep 07, 2016
    Show notes

Oh my god, they've killed Colton! Those b@st@rds! Wait...WhatwhatWHAT? Relax, guy. I'm not being seriously. He's fine. He dies in every episode! Inside. Because editing so many podcasts makes him want to suck Chef's chocolate salty balls. Last week he went insane and said "screw you guys, I'm going home." Last I heard he went off to hunt for ManBearPig with Al Gore in a quiet pissant mountain town. Don't know where he is now, but he's probably fighting the frizzies, at eleven. They mostly come out at night. Mostly. Me? I'm super! Thanks for asking. But with Colton MIA I had to get someone to sub for him. So I some calls and got Rod Stewart to play a gig at New Year's in Las Vegas...but it turns out he doesn't read manga, so he wouldn't come on the podcast. So, I just got my brother Varun aka VlordGTZ to come on instead! And if you don't like it, well...you go to hell! You go to hell and you die! Or blame Canada. Their cartoons destroyed Colton's fragile little mind Plus, they bombed the Baldwins. Those uncle farting savages. Well, you gotta do what you gotta do. As long as what you're doing is cool and popular with everyone. This week we go over a couple of lists that highlight some anime adaptions and Shonen Jump heroines that are about as popular as Scott Malcomson. Plus we run down some other hella kewl news including Spice & Wolf author Isuna Hasekura coming to New York Comic Con, Active Gaming Media's Tezuka-inspired digital card game, and the upcoming Manga Translation Battle Contest! Sweeeet. Manga Mavericks EP. 15: Some Things Never Die (Like Pokemon) Aug 24, 2016
    Show notes

It's kinda crazy that Pokemon is more popular than ever internationally twenty years later. Pokemon Go was a phenomenon, the hype for Sun & Moon grows more and more like an Exeggutor every day, and there was a huge uproar over Ash losing his match with Alain in the finals of the Kalos League in the anime. With the games, anime, and manga all better than ever, this has been a great year to be a Pokemon fan! Heck, with this much vitality, Pokemon is sure to be going strong another 20 years! On that note, screw the Olympic Committee's reasoning for not including Pokemon among the anime and gaming franchises representing Japan in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. So apparently Pokemon is not as popular internationally as Yo-Kai Watch? Suuuurrreee.... While some franchises like Pokemon will never die, most series are finite. That's especially true of manga. It's unbelievable just how many long-running and popular titles have ended this year. Just this month alone, there's been Nisekoi, Billy Bat, Genshiken, and as of this week, Bleach. It feels surreal to live in a world where Bleach is over. It ran for fifteen years, and was among the formative series for an entire generation of anime and manga fans. Once a part of the so-called "Big 3," it had a dramatic fall from grace about half-way into it's run, and never recovered afterwards. Opinions on the series vary, but there's no denying it left an impact in the community and the industry. It's unlikely to continue on as a franchise like Naruto has, but it's unlikely to be forgotten all the same, and sure to be a subject of heated debates between shonen fans for many years to come. But we've got more to talk about this week than the ending of Bleach! This week's Manga Mavericks features plenty of new licenses, movie announcements, and neat little tidbits to keep you up to date on the latest happenings in the manga industry! Plus, we discuss the new Shonen Jump simulpub series, Astra Lost in Space by Kenta Shinohara of Sket Dance fame! We all know that Colton is a big fan of Sket Dance, but what did he think of Shinohara's latest creation? No need to be lost searching through the episode for it - this week I've got a breakdown to help you jump right to it! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha. If there’s something you want to ask that’s too big to tweet, drop us a line in the comments below, or e-mail us at mangamavericks@gmail.com! Thanks for listening!

Manga Mavericks EP. 14: Equal Rights for All Comics! (#EFAC) Aug 09, 2016
    Show notes

Manga Mavericks might be a manga podcast, but that doesn't mean we don't enjoy comics from countries outside of japan! Be it manwha or bande dessinees, we believe that every comic in the world has the right to be loved (except for the really bad ones)! All-Comic.com is one of the few comic sites out there that shares the love for comics made around the world in equal capacity. That's why we're called All-Comic! Can't get more inclusive than that! I think it's time to start a movement. Equal rights for all comics! #EFAC! Spread the world! Share the love! Read some comics! If you believe in that mission statement, then maybe you can help us out a bit. Now, I don't want to go all NPR on you guys, but the site's grown too big to be funded out of pocket, which is why we need readers like you to pitch in and help support the reviews and podcasts you want to read. Keep in mind no one on this site is actually getting paid. This is just site maintenance cost stuff. To keep the site afloat for another year, we'll need about $800 CAD, and right now we're about an eighth of the way there. If you enjoy reading the reviews and listening to the podcasts on this site, then we'd really appreciate if you'd head on over here to contribute whatever you can. Thanks! As for this week's installment of Manga Mavericks, it's back to basics as Colton and Sid go over all the latest manga news and announcements. From speculating on the new Jump Starts debuting later this month, to running down all the manga ending in August (and man, there sure are a lot of them!), this episode is jam-packed with good discussion!

13: Happy Accidents Jul 27, 2016
    Show notes

Manga Mavericks was almost in a real crises this week folks. We normally record the show on Friday afternoons, but I was out on a trip during our regularly scheduled recording time, and Colton was too busy over the weekend to do the show on any other date. We had too options: either delay the show another week or two, or Colton getting someone to sub for me in my absence. Luckily, the man of the hour, esteemed anime podcaster extraordinaire Josh Dunham of Senpai Coast to Coast and Wave Motion Canon fame answered the call, and the fate of the podcast was secured! Then it turned out that they’d be recording at 7pm Friday night, and I’d be home by then, so I could do the podcast anyway. Which we could have just rescheduled to in the first place, making all our worrying for naught. Woops! But it was a happy accident, because while this was a short week of news, with our first-ever guest on board there was plenty to talk about! So join us this week as your titular Manga Mavericks and special guest dive right in to another two weeks worth of manga news, discussing the latest BookScan monthly report, the merit of the upcoming My Hero Academia spinoff series, and Oda’s claim that One Piece is 65% complete! Plus, Josh theorizes about the downfall of Bleach, and Colton postulates about what might very well be the worst manga ever made! The number 13 has never been luckier! Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha, and Josh Dunham at @Josh_Dunham! If there’s something you want to ask that’s too big to tweet, drop us a line in the comments below, or e-mail us at mangamavericks@gmail.com! Thanks for listening!
