Manga Mavericks EP. 36: One Piece (FEAT. Sam Leach) Jul 30, 2017
    Show notes

Yo! Here’s how the story goes you find out. About a manga in Shonen Jump, there’s no doubt. The podcaster whose eye is on it he’ll say “I’ll be making a podcast, s’what I’m gonna be making!” So we set sights on One Piece, Eiichiro Oda’s monolithic manga that has been enthralling fans worldwide for over 20 years. To help us commemorate this hardy occasion, we brought aboard Sam Leach, a shipmate over at the One Piece Podcast, to help us make merry over our One Piece memories. During the course of our three hour reminiscence, we’re reminded how through it all - through all the troubled times, through the heartache and through the pain - we know that One Piece will be there to stand by us, just like we know we’ll stand by it. We are on a cruise, and have been for the last twenty years. No matter how much longer this journey may last, know that there is always room for you if you want to be our friend and join this adventure with us. Together we will find everything that we’re looking for. So come aboard and bring along all your hopes and dreams! Being a One Piece fan will satisfy them like no other manga will. Oh, and we talk about news for a bit too. It was a pretty great month for manga in North America! Lots of Bookscan representation, Berserk was finally made available digitally, and there were some great licenses from Viz Media at Comic Con! Back in Japan there was a controversy over Yuna of Yuragi Manor that we spend quite a bit of time dissecting, and probably will come back to as a broader discussion topic on fanservice down the line. It was pretty fortuitous that the One Piece live-action tv show was announced the week we recorded this so we wouldn’t have an awkward transition between topics! Editor's Note, 2020: This podcast was recorded before the revelations about Nobuhiro Watsuki and the subsequent failure to prosecute him for his crime. As a consequence of the Watsuki situation, we've since reevaluated our feelings on Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's own allegations and are less enthusiastic and supportive of him and his work. We still feel our discussion of his comic essay about Eiichiro Oda is worth including, but we wanted to note that our feelings on this comic and its creator are more complicated and critical now. This podcast is very much a product of its time, and we humbly ask you to keep this in mind as you listen to it. The Story of Pokémon Adventures | PokéSpe Retrospective #02 Jul 29, 2017
    Show notes

I want to be the best there ever was. To beat all the rest, yeah, that’s my cause. Unfortunately, just like Ash, I keep getting stuck in set back after set back, taking far too long to make any real progress. Until now! After spending three months in editing hell, the long-awaited second half of the Pokémon Adventures retrospective is finally here! In this special podcast I’m joined by Annaliese Christman, the official letterer of Pokémon Adventures for Viz Media, as well as fellow Pokémon fanatic Johnathan Lewis to discuss the entirety of the Pokémon Adventures manga from the beginning. That’s right, we talk about all fourteen arcs – you can see why this podcast ended up so long, right? Topics of discussion include the manga’s fidelity to the games, the missed opportunities of the FireRed & LeafGreen arc, difficulties in translating the manzai jokes in Diamond & Pearl, why Ruby is so fabulous, and tangents about all sorts of random things! All in all, we had a great conversation about what makes this series so special and I’m glad to finally be able to share it with you guys! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:00 - Intro Thoughts on Each Arc: 03:10 - Red & Blue 20:02 - Yellow 31:22 - Gold & Silver 45:17 - Ruby & Sapphire 1:02:20 - FireRed & LeafGreen 1:13:46 - Emerald 1:21:58 - Diamond and Pearl & Platinum 1:37:20 - HeartGold & SoulSilver 1:44:56 - Black & White 1:53:00 - Black 2 & White 2 2:02:20 - X & Y 2:13:20 - OmegaRuby & AlphaSapphire 2:15:40 - Sun & Moon 2:21:30 - Final Thoughts About Why Pokemon Adventures is Great! Manga Mavericks EP. 35: Anime Expo and LGBT Manga Jul 18, 2017
    Show notes

Part of the problem with doing a bi-weekly podcast is that you’re always a week late to the discussion, even if you made plans before everyone else. First, ANNCast did a Rumiko Takahashi retrospective last month when I’d already planned to do one this October to celebrate her 60th birthday, something I’ve had in mind for the past year. Then, Wave Motion Cannon, Manga Machinations, and Manga In Your Ears all put out an episode on My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness within a week of each other after we had just finished recording ours. And now, practically every anime and manga-related podcast is doing an episode complaining about Anime Strike!, including Colton who cucked me and went off on his own to record one with Buggy and Doctor even though he knew me and VLord wanted in. What am I supposed to add to the conversation now, huh? Why couldn’t we all be on the same page…well actually we all were on the same page...but why couldn’t we all done one big collaboration instead of all these fragmented discussions? Why does no one return my calls and e-mails? Why do all my friends ignore me? Why does it take so long to edit podcasts? Why does Audacity always freeze up and make editing on my crappy laptop so tedious? Why is the second half of the Pokemon Adventures retrospective not out yet? Why do I keep recording new episodes of Movie Mavericks Manga Mavericks @ Movies when I haven’t released one in months? Why do I even podcast? Talking about My Lesbian Experience in Loneliness and My Brother’s Husband made me remember why. These manga are not just great stories for the LGBT community, but communicate universally relevant and relatable messages. Both are about very different things, but about equally important subjects, and are two of the finest manga to come out this year. They are the kind of manga that inspire me, the kind of manga which reminds me why I love manga. They are the kind of manga that you can’t help but want to talk about after reading, and the kind of manga that should provoke thoughtful, meaningful discussions from everyone in this community. Which is why I’m linking to other podcasts that discuss My Lesbian Experience in Loneliness in this post, to help spread the word and unite our voices in our love for these manga. While they’ve been getting plenty of attention and exposure, they deserve even more critical analysis and discussion, and I’m hoping these podcasts will help stimulate that conversation. But you should listen to ours first, of course. This is one of the longest episodes of the show in a while, easily double the length of the last few, and for good reason. After all, Anime Expo happened. Yeah. We’ve got almost 40 minutes worth of pure licensing news from the con to go over, and another half an hour of happenings to talk about too. Not to mention there’s two new Jump Starts to tackle, one among the best in recent memory, and the other one of the worst. Luckily, our good friend Maxy Barnard joins us to help discuss these alongside My Brother’s Husband and My Lesbian Experience, making for some great and insightful conversations about what makes them so great (and so irredeemably awful, in a certain manga’s case). Considering how long this episode is, you better stop reading and start listening! You don’t want to be late to the party like we were, ha ha….ha ha…haaaaaa… PODCAST BREAKDOWN: Part 1: News 0:22 - Introductions & Plans 1:24 - Dr. Stone Gets 2nd Printing of Volume 1 6:04 - Fairy Tail Confirmed to End with Chapter #545 7:24 - New Shonen Ashibe Manga About the Characters in High School 10:57 - Akira Himekawa Are Creating a New Fantasy Manga Called Kamdo 12:43 - Cells at Work Gets Spinoff About Cells That Don’t Work 14:10 - Spinoff Novel of Your Name Gets Manga Adapataion in July 17:15 - Udon Publishes Daigo the Beast 20:00 - Crunchyroll to Publish Final Fantasy: Lost Stranger, Knight's & Magic, & Restaurant to Another World Manga Simultaneously With Japan 23:10

Manga Mavericks EP. 34: Welcome to the Ballroom Jun 29, 2017
    Show notes

They say that dance is the only art of which we ourselves are the stuff which it is made. Unless it’s a dancing manga, in which case it’s made of paper and ink or pixels if it’s digital. Today the Manga Mavericks find their rhythm and explore the meaning of dance through Tomo Takeuchi’s Welcome to the Ballroom, a resoundingly popular dancesport manga whose anime adaptation promises to be one of the best shows of the upcoming summer season. Considering Colton was not a fan of similar dancesport manga Straighten Up!, will the Mavericks be able to get into the groove of the series, or will they lose their footing and fall out of step with its story and messages? Well if the only way to describe dance is to show dance, then the only way to learn what people think is to hear them, so listen away! Of course we’ve got news to cover first. Colton cheats on the show with another podcast, so Sid is forced to recruit VLordGTZ yet again to discuss the latest happenings in the world of manga. From great deals like the Fairy Tail Humble Bundle, to game-changing strategies to support your favorite creators directly, the newest exciting worldwide manga contest held by Shonen Jump, and the cavalcade of incredible guests at Anime Expo, there’s a lot to be excited about this week! No discussions of the recent Jump Starts on this week’s episode, because we’ll be discussing them with Maxy Barnard on our next show, and let me tell you will he have some choice words for Cross Account... Manga Mavericks EP. 33: Delicious in Dungeon Jun 15, 2017
    Show notes

Ever wanted to know what a slime monster tastes like? Apparently mangaka Ryoko Kui did. This week the Manga Mavericks fill up on her D&D-inspired cooking manga Delicious in Dungeon, recently published over in the west by Yen Press. Did it whet the boys’ appetite for a fantasy cooking manga, or did it leave a bad aftertaste? If you’ve read my review of the first volume, you can probably guess, but listen and find out anyways! Before that, we’ve of course got news to deal with! We run down Oricon’s latest semi-annually top-selling charts, exciting upcoming new manga, and changes going on in Weekly Shonen Jump’s lineup, including the addition of two new Jump Starts, Shudan! and Cross Account! Shudan! already debuted in this week’s Jump, and it’s one of the best first chapters I’ve read in a while. Definitely look forward to us discussing it more in-depth on the next episode of the show. Between the news and our Dungeon discussion, this is a short but sweet episode that’ll be sure to satisfy your cravings for great manga talk! Oh, and in case you didn’t know I made an anti-piracy rap. I was inspired by the Anime Cypher challenge and wanted to so something like that. Except none of the people I tagged have answered the call. Guess I’m the only real gangsta in this community after all! The History of Pokémon Adventures | PokéSpe Retrospective #01 Jun 05, 2017
    Show notes

Pokémon Adventures is perhaps the most famous and by far the best Pokémon manga ever made. To celebrate its 20th anniversary, LumRanmaYasha is once again joined by Annaliese (Ace) Christman, the official english letterer for the series for Viz Media, as well as the self-proclaimed Pokémon fanatic Jonathan (Vix) to discuss the series and its legacy. In the first part of our two-part retrospective, we reminisce about how we discovered the manga, and naturally, how we got into Pokémon in the first place. What results is the realization that Pokémon is more than just a franchise designed to make kids waste their money trying to collect everything associated to it, but rather a lifestyle, one that an entire generation has collectively grown up with. We’ve made friends, learned to read, and even gotten jobs thanks to Pokémon; it’s become an irreplaceable part of our lives. Thanks to Pokémon, every day along the way, we have been prepared. With every challenge, we have gained knowledge to be shared. And in our hearts, there’s no doubt of who we are. We’re right here, standing strong, with lots of friends beside us. We put ourselves to the test to be better than all the rest. We all live in a Pokémon world. So, question is, do YOU wanna be a master of Pokémon fandom? Do you have the skills to be a number one nerd? If so, you’ve got the power right in your hands. Click play, and let us bring you back to the early days of Pokémon fandom, as we begin exploring what is truly the pinnacle of the Pokémon franchise – the Pokémon Adventures manga! Manga Mavericks EP. 32: Descending Stories Jun 03, 2017
    Show notes

Even if rakugo was a dying art form, manga surely isn’t! The anime adaptation of Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu was critically acclaimed among anime connoisseurs in the west, so the Manga Mavericks take a look at the original manga, licensed and renamed Descending Stories by Kodansha USA. Can a manga capture the essence of rakugo as an auditory performance art in a soundless medium? Or is this another case of an anime adaptation transcending the limitations of its source material to transform a good story into a masterpiece? But first, news! Colton’s back from buying cigarettes at Anime St. Louis, and rejoins Sid in discussing the latest happenings in the world of manga. We feign enthusiasm for the return of Hunter X Hunter, speculate on the potential of a Hollywood-produced Saint Seiya live-action film, and salivate over Seven Seas’s latest tidal wave of manga licenses, including the likes of Devilman and Captian Harlock! So sit down and get comfy as we deliver a podcast as entertaining as listening to a rakugo performance itself! Manga Mavericks EP. 31: My Hero Academia Q&A Extravaganza!! May 20, 2017
    Show notes

Rounding off our My Hero Academia podcast trilogy is this long-awaited Q&A special! We received so many questions for our Manga Fight we couldn't possibly use them all, so we organized this special episode to answer them! Both Jeff Ruberg and Doctor return to give their takes on your questions, and what results is the realization that all podcasters are evil, Stain is best girl, Mineta should make a Spirit Bomb out of sticky balls, and lots of lucrative ideas for ScrewAttack! Before we get to all that we have to cover the news first, but because Colton abandoned the podcast to go to Anime St. Louis to buy cigarettes, I had to find another co-host for the week. Thankfully, that scumbag VLordGTZ just happened to be in the room so I pulled him over, sat him down, and forced him to talk about the latest happenings in the manga industry for fourty-five minutes. We discuss how confusing Yu-Gi-Oh! is now, dance on Fairy Tail's grave, and speculate on the Attack on Titan/Madagascar crossover that is totally definitely going to happen one day. We close off talking about a list of japanese readers' favorite Shonen Jump mangaka. Did MHA's Kohei Horikoshi make the list? Listen and find out! Manga Mavericks EP. 30: Great Teacher Onizuka (w/Nick Rowe) May 04, 2017
    Show notes

Who's the greatest teacher in manga? Korosensei? Zetsubou Sensei? The Ultimate Otaku Teacher? Ha! Posers, all of them! They pale in comparison to the original gangsta, the one and only, Great Teacher Onizuka. To celebrate the GTO manga's 20th anniversary, we're schooling you guys a crash-course on the fundamentals of GTO. Fellow All-Comic manga specialist Nick Rowe joins us to give us the 101 on how the old folk discovered GTO back in the days of Tokyopop and how filthy rich GTO's creator Tohru Fujisawa became because of it's success. Not only do we talk about the original manga in depth, we touch upon the prequel, sequels, and spinoffs as well! Everything you ever wanted to know about GTO is covered in this erudite educational episode. But first, we've got about an hours' worth of news to peruse through! We correct the previously misreported circulation numbers for One Piece, butt heads on whether Keijo!!!!!!!! was unfairly canceled, and are simultaneously bemused and amused over the recent controversy over Sword Art Online being in an Idaho Middle School's library. Oh, and we discuss To Love Ru being licensed by Seven Seas. Finally, the greatest softcore porn manga in Shonen Jump's history will be available in bookstores everywhere. Can't wait for the inevitable school library controversy over that one. Manga Fights EP. 05: My Hero Academia May 01, 2017
    Show notes

It’s time for another episode of All-Comic Presents: Manga Mavericks Presents: Manga Fights sponsored by Geoff Martin Art Sales (not really)! Operating in the same fashion as Screen Junkies’ Movie Fights, Manga Fights features passionate manga fans debating it out over manga-related several topics both intriguing and insane. With the Manga Mavericks as your hosts, intelligent conversations, heated arguments, and unintentional comedy is always sure to abound! Manga Fights returns for a three-month hiatus with a fight of heroic proportions! Continuing where we left off with our My Hero Academia debate, Doctor rejoins us to debate Jeff Ruberg, mobile developer for Viz Media, in a series of MHA-related topics! For the very first time ever, every topic picked for this episode was a listener suggestion! Not knowing just what to expect, Jeff and Doctor argue over what makes a good hero and villain, what defines a "comic-book style," and most importantly, who the best girl and best boy in the series are! The debates get so heated that the judges start arguing themselves! With some smart answers, snappy humor, and surprise special guests, this is a fight that's not to be missed! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:30 - Introductions!! Debate Round: 5:20 - Round 1: What Makes a Good Hero? 19:05 - Round 2: What Makes a Good Villain? 35:30 - Round 3: Which Character is Criminally Underused? 49:10 - Round 4: Which MHA Hero Should Get Their Own Comic-Book Style Solo Series? 1:03:00 - Round 5: Who is the Traitor? Speed Round: 1:18:15 - Round 6: Who is Best Girl? 1:21:25 - Round 7: Who is Best Boy? 1:24:20 - Round 8: Which Characters Should Get Their Turn in the Limelight? 1:27:40 - Round 9: Is Deku a Relatable Character? 1:38:30 - Round 10: In Which Arc Do You Appreciate Deku's Character the Most? 1:46:40 - Wrap-Up Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and now on Youtube! You can also follow the hosts at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha, and special guests Doctor and Jeff Ruberg at @ssaapodcast and @jeffinitelyjeff! Due to the number of MHA-related questions we received, we will be recording a separate MHA Q&A special to be released on Friday, May 19th! We’ll be recording on Sunday, My 7th, so make sure to send any MHA-related questions and debate topics suggestions for us to discuss on the show before then! The next Manga Fight will differ from the usual format, instead tackling a genre instead of a specific series. Said genre will be MONSTER GIRL manga!! If you guys want to send questions and topic suggestions for that episode, you may do so on twitter, the Manga Mavericks forum on Animation Revelation, or e-mail us at mangamaverics@gmail.com. Don’t forget to also like and subscribe to us on Youtube and iTunes and leave us reviews to help us curate the show and create better content! If there are any topics, series or mangaka you would like to see us talk about on the show, drop us a line in the comments below, or e-mail us! Thanks for listening!
