Manga Mavericks @ Movies #14: Ghost in the Shell/Power Rangers May 11, 2018
    Show notes

Welcome to Manga Mavericks @ Movies, the show where we don’t talk smack about movies, except when we do! How’s that for a catchphrase! Hey, at least it’s more accurate than the old one. It’s no secret that we recorded a ton of @ Movies episodes that we haven’t released yet. Nearly two dozen in fact. I’d been thinking of the best way to release them, and I figured – why not all at once? That’s right, we’re motoring through the @ Movies backlog this month in a special event I’d like to call Manga Mavericks @ Movies Month! Since the beginning of May, I’ve been posting a new @ Movies review every day on our Youtube channel. We’re about 10 days in now, and I’m really happy that we’ve been able to keep it up so far. Of course, these reviews were never meant to be Youtube exclusive, and now I’m finally starting to release the official podcast versions on our feed! I’ll be posting a new @ Movies episode every few days until we’ve cleared our backlog, or at least most of it. It’s an insane undertaking, but I’ve just graduated college and have a short reprieve before I resume working full-time this summer, so it’s now or never! Today we’re going way back to the oldest recordings in our archive, discussing two movies that were released back in March 2017. Coincidentally, both happen to be remakes of beloved franchises from the 90’s: Ghost in the Shell and Power Rangers. Fans expected these movies to suck, but were surprised to find that the worse of the two wasn’t what they expected. In fact, one of these movies is arguably good! Which of these two movies did the Mavericks seriously loathe and which did they sorta like? Our friend Ethan joins us to find out! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:18 – Intro 03:42 – Ghost in the Shell (2017) 47:48 – Power Rangers (2017) 1:06:13 – Wrap-Up Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and subscribe to us on Youtube. You can follow the hosts on twitter at @LumRanmaYasha and @VLordGTZ, and our friend Ethan on Facebook. Don’t forget to also subscribe to us on iTunes and leave us reviews to help us curate the show and create better content! We take your suggestions and feedback very seriously and want to figure out more ways to reach out and interact with you guys, so please leave some responses! Manga Mavericks EP. 46: Takamagahara Apr 18, 2018
    Show notes

For this episode of Manga Mavericks, the part of Sid will played by both Maxy Barnard and Bomber D Rufi, as Sid had this thing called “school” to focus on until he is finally finished with that and is ready to get back to slaving away at all the unfinished podcasts he still has to edit. Anyway, while Sid is off on his own ventures, Colton takes care of the show this week and covers the news with the help of Shonen Sunday fanatic, Bomber D Rufi (@kiirobon), as they talk about the usual new upcoming manga serials, licenses and live action films! Some highlights include a list of the biggest first printings from the biggest manga publishers within the last year, Viz Media licensing of Dragon Ball: That Time I Was Reincarnated as Yamcha, as well as some new info about Hiro Mashima’s upcoming new series! Afterwards, Maxy Barnard (@MaxyTheBee) from Friendship! Effort! Victory!, joins the show to discuss and dissect Takamagahara from Jyuuzou Kawai. Another prematurely ending Shonen Jump manga that ran simultaneously in English and Japanese via Viz Media before the era of Jump Starts! Colton and Maxy discuss how they feel about the series in relation to its many unexplored ideas and themes that were shadowed by both some less than stellar storytelling and various production issues behind the scenes. Next episode, we’ll be discussing our thoughts on Viz’s latest round of Jump Starts, as well two recent one shots from both Hiroshi Shiibashi (Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan) and Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro (Toriko). Sid’s Note: As of this post I am hopefully finished with the bulk of my academic obligations. I had hoped to never miss an episode, but alas it was an unavoidable inevitability considering my workload this semester. Sadly, the last few weeks have been highly traumatic and stressful, but hopefully this ordeal is all over with and I can return to the podcast unburdened. I must extend a huge thanks to the wonderful Maxy Barnard and Bomber D Rufi for covering for me this week. They are always a delight to listen to, and I’m looking forward to personally talking with them again in future shows. I’m also very grateful to Colton for creating this week’s thumbnail and writing up this post and the podcast breakdown, tasks I normally do but simply did not have time for this week. You guys are great friends and I’m very thankful this podcast has allowed me to meet all of you. I’m looking forward to continuing doing more projects with you all! And on the subject of all those unedited episodes of Manga Mavericks @ Movies…well, I can’t concretely confirm that they’ll be coming closely, but MAYbe. ;) PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 0:00 - Intro 04:20 - Monthly Bookscan March List 07:46 - Biggest 1st Printing from the Big 3 Publishers 24:04 - Chiho Saito previews new manga 25:16 - Orange's Ichigo Takano Launches New Manga on April 25 26:38 - Shinobu Ohtaka launches new manga in Weekly Shonen Magazine 31:05 - Hiroshi Fukuda launches new manga on April 25th 35:27 - Akame ga Kill artist to launch new series 36:21 - Satoshi Mizukami launches 'Planet With' Anime/Manga 42:22 - Updates on Hiro Mashima’s New Series 47:26 - Bozebeats ends in Issue 20 of Shonen Jump 52:38 - Juni Taisen to end in 4th volume 56:02 - Everyone's Getting Married Manga Ends on May 8 56:33 - D.N.Angel Manga Annoucned to Return 1:01:23 - Welcome to the Ballroom continues its hiatus 1:04:53 - Naruto gets new 3-novel book series 1:06:39 - Listing for After The Rain from Vertical on Amazon 1:07:40 - Vertical’s Anime Boston Licenses 1:11:27 - Yen Press Anime Boston Licenses 1:18:27 - Viz Media Anime Boston Licenses 1:27:08 - J-Novel Club licenses Mari Okada’s autobiography 1:27:38 - Dark Horse Comics to release Eromanga-sensei 1:29:12 - Dark Horse Licenses Danganronpa 2: Ultimate Luck and Hope and Despair Manga 1:29:34 - Udon to Launch Otherwordly Izakaya Nobu Manga in September 2018 1:30:33 - One Peace Books Licenses Hinamatsuri and others 1:33:12 - Ni

Manga Mavericks EP. 45: The Big News Roundup! Apr 09, 2018
    Show notes

BIG NEWS! Because our Kenta Shinohara podcasts were delayed we didn’t get around to covering a lot of important news from the past couple months. To remedy that, we decided to record a big news-focused podcast to get everyone up to speed! …This was a big bad idea. We accumulated nearly twelve pages worth of news, tallying to over one hundred stories in total! To make matters worse, we began recording late at night after I was already exhausted from drawing for nearly 20 hours that day. Thanks to a spotty internet connection, we ended up needing two recording sessions and over four hours of rough audio to cover everything we wanted to. Needless to say, recording this was a tiring process. You can definitely hear the exhaustion in my voice by the end of this podcast, alongside Colton’s groans of impatience. Though frankly, listening back to this episode I did most of the talking, so it’s kinda funny that Colton was more vocally upset by the experience. ^^, Regardless of how frustrating the process was, this was a necessary podcast to make. Discussing manga news is the reason this show originally came into being, and doing a purely news-focused episode brings us nostalgically back to the roots of our early episodes. Did we go a little overboard in the mountain of content we attempted to surmount? Perhaps. But hopefully you’ll find this podcast as valuable as we found these stories important to discuss. From lists to licenses, endings to sequels, controversies to scandals, and adaptations to anime this podcast is jam-packed with all the stories you need to know to understand where the manga industry is at as of Spring 2018! Manga Mavericks EP. 43: Astra Lost in Space Mar 10, 2018
    Show notes

Our Kenta Shinohara Month ended up ballooning to a quarter-year! Sorry about the delay on this episode folks. Life stuff happened, which is pretty usual. Also, my (LumRanmaYasha)'s audio got messed up and had to be completely re-recorded, which was very unusual. But all these setbacks couldn't stop this podcast from coming out! We kept the mantra of Astra's world - Per Aspera Ad Aspera: "Through hardships through the stars" - in our minds and hearts. And like the Astra crew, we overcame all the hurdles in our way and became better and stronger people for it! Continuing off from last month's interview, we're joined once again by Marlene First, editor of Astra Lost in Space for Viz Media! We discuss all the reasons why Astra captured our hearts, from its lovably nuanced characters to its intriguing sci-fi concepts. We also answer some Q&As from Reddit listeners, addressing changes made to the Viz editions of the graphic novels and clearing some misconceptions about why it ended. So join us as we journey through everything that makes Kenta Shinohara's latest series so astra-ordinary! Awe yeah! LumRanmaYasha and VLordGTZ convene to give their predictions on this year's Oscars!... ...Say what? You're telling me that the awards are already over? We already found out what won everything? Darn it! Yeah, we meant to get this podcast out before the Oscars, but some mishaps prevented us from getting it edited in time. Even so, we think it'll still be fun to hear what we wanted to win and thought would win, and see if any of our predictions actually happened. We also devoted a lot of time to some often overlooked awards, particularly the short film categories. So join us to celebrate some of the best movies of 2017 as we discuss the nominations for the 90th Academy Awards! Manga Mavericks @ Movies is starting the new year strong with our first ever crossover podcast! LumRanmaYasha teams up with Just a Gintama Podcast’s Doctor and Manga Mavericks co-host and Life Lessons: The Gintama Mangacast’s Colton to discuss the live-action Gintama movie! One discussion recorded for three different podcasts, each with their own unique beginnings and endings! It’s like playing a branching route in a fighting game! So, did these three die-hard Gintama fans enjoy this film? Have they adapted the Benizakura arc too many times for us to care anymore? Is this another failure in a long line of attempts to make live-action cartoons? Will LumRanmaYasha ever edit those thirty+ unreleased episodes of this show we recorded last year? All these answers will be solved by the end of this podcast! Manga Mavericks EP. 42: Getting to Know Marlene First! Feb 05, 2018
    Show notes

My long-awaited review of Astra Lost in Space volume one was really well-received! I want to thank everyone who commented on it, and especially Viz Media for retweeting it and following both the podcast and myself on Twitter! It’s a huge honor and it made me really happy as a longtime fan of theirs. I really put in a lot of time and love writing the Astra review to make sure I highlighted everything that makes it one of my all-time favorite series. You can bet that I’m not done talking about it yet. In fact, you’ll be able to hear me talking about it for a good two hours very soon! Speaking of Astra and Viz, we have a very special guest this week! Marlene First, editor of Astra Lost in Space alongside numerous other series, joins us for an incredibly informative interview about her career, what being a manga editor entails, her amazing life experiences, and of course, why she loves the works of Kenta Shinohara. We also recorded a lengthy retrospective about Astra Lost in Space itself, which was originally intended to be the focus of this episode, but since this interview already runs for nearly two hours and the Astra discussion is just as long we decided it would be best to split it up into two different episodes. Don’t fret, our Astra discussion is in the process of being edited, and we’ll release it within the next two weeks. Sorry for the lateness! We got lost in space ourselves. Or more accurately, in a vacuum of life problems that made editing difficult. But hey, all that means is that our Kenta Shinohara month is now a Kenta Shinohara month-and-a-half! You can never have enough discussion of his series, can you? So in the meantime, let’s get to know Marlene First! Bozebeats 26:23 - How did Marlene get into Manga? 33:33 - What was Marlene's First Exposure to Weekly Shonen Jump? 40:00 - Why did Marlene decide to become a Manga Editor? 46:30 - How Marlene inspired a character in Gatchman Crowds! 58:11 - What are the Responsibilities of a Manga Editor? 1:01:35 - What are the Differences and Challenges editing Simulpublished Manga compared to Graphic Novels? 1:05:33 - What is the Toughest Part of a Manga Editor’s job? 1:08:07 - What is the Most Rewarding Experience being a Manga Editor? 1:08:53 - What do Editors look for when Choosing Series to Pitch as Possible Acquisitions? 1:10:58 - Reading Manga For Fun as an Industry Professional 1:13:17 - Interacting with Fans as an Industry Professional 1:20:40 - What makes Kenta Shinohara’s Manga so Appealing? 1:39:40 - Wrap-Up Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @manga_mavericks, on tumblr at mangamavericks.tumblr.com, and now on Youtube! Manga Mavericks & Anime #01: Black Clover Dec 31, 2017
    Show notes

We’re not done yet! We’ve got one last podcast for you guys before the year is over. Something that I’ve been meaning to get out for a while now. Welcome to the first episode of a recurring show I like to call Manga Mavericks & Anime, a show where we’ll talk about anime, naturally. In this first installment we discuss our thoughts on the Black Clover anime with Annaliese Christman, letter of Black Clover for Weekly Shonen Jump, and Maxy Barnard, host of Friendship! Effort! Victory! We recorded this the weekend after the first episode aired, and I intended to release it the week after, but because of other priorities it’s taken me until now to finish editing it. But hey, better late than never, right? The Black Clover anime has been plenty controversial, and we approach it from a rather optimistic and appreciative standpoint compared to most reviewers you might’ve listened to. We talk about our expectations for the anime, what we think about the animation, the voice acting, and common criticisms about the series. While our discussion is centered around the first episode, what we talk about is still relevant to the discourse on the series as a whole and is a lot of fun to listen to. It’s a great conversation to close off 2017 and look forward to what’s on the horizon in 2018!
