45: Jon drops a HUGE surprise on our Atlanta road trip May 26, 2016
    Show notes

The guys talk about the trip from their homes to Atlanta, GA where they had some amazing interviews planned to feature on upcoming shows. Since the trip produced a lot of great content, we will be releasing a show weekly over the next several weeks to get this content out as quickly as possible.

After our planning session for episode 46, the guys unpacked the gear and did a mock setup and test run to make sure all of the recording equipment was working properly. During the chat Jon dropped a bomb on Rich and Rico!

    Ride to Atlanta:

    • Jon left Durham, NC around 6:30am.
    • Jon met up with Rich at D&D in Charlotte, NC around 9:30am
    • Rich loaded up Della (WRX) with his stuff and left around 10:00 am.
    • Met up with Rico at 11:30am and went to Yard House for lunch.
    • The guys jumped on I-85 South and rode off to Atlanta, GA
    • Hit Atlanta, GA around 4:15 pm - just the right time for rush hour traffic, which took the next hour to get to the hotel
    • After a little refresh - back into Della for the 3.5 mile drive to dinner, which only took 30 minutes! Got to love big city traffic...
    • Sena Update - Works great with two, but once a third party was added there was open mic noise. Didn't matter who started intercom. Will have to play around with the Sena more to see if they can figure out the problem. If you have any ideas, reach us on our Feedback page

    Audio Test and Jon's news:

    • Guys unpack gear and test the setup for the next day
    • Jon harassed the guys into doing an audio test
    • Rico started by asking Jon about his ride down
    • While chatting Jon casually drops a bomb! You'll have to listen to find out. :)

44: Long Ride Planning Part 2 and Rico rides the Ducati Multistrada Enduro and XDiavel May 13, 2016
    Show notes

Tonight the guys talk about how they go about planning out a long road trip or not. Rico was able to stop by for a Ducati demo ride and gives us his take on the Multrstrada Enduro and the XDiavel.

What the guys sipped on during the show:

    • Rich - Skull Splitter (The Orkney Brewery)
    • Rico - Jefferson Stout Sweet Potato (Lazy Magnolia Brewing Company)
    • Jon - Hard Ginger Ale (Coney Island Brewing)

    Long Trip Planning:

    • The guys sat down and used the Furkot site and planned out a 9 day ride.
    • Ride covered ~2100 miles, average ~260 miles per day, and ~7 hours in the seat.
    • The trip avoids highways thanks to Furkot option.
    • Rich has nickedname the trip - Loud Pipes Automotive Tour due to stops planned out. The following are places planned to stop and see on trip:
      • Wheels Through Time
      • Corvette Museum and Factory
      • Indianapolis Motor Speedway
      • Henry Ford Museum
      • Niagara Falls
      • D.G. Yuenglins & Son
      • Harley-Davidson York, PA
    • The route needs more details, but overall this is good starting point to build on.

Rico was able to get a little time in to stop by Ducati demo and get to take a couple of bikes for a little spin. Rico thoughts.....

    Multirstrada Enduro:

    • Really enjoys bike, and now gets the idea of adventure bikes
    • This one adds to the stable to bring the total to four
    • Comfortable ride, could use a backrest
    • 40 minutes including traffic and some nice back roads
    • Tried touring and sport modes
    • Main negative was a lot of shifting to find the power band. Felt like engine ran out of breath too soon

    xDiavel

    • Loves the look of the bike!
    • FAST Bike
    • Stop light comment about how nice the bike looks
    • Took bike on same roads with the Multristrada Enduro
    • Felt like the bike could do wheelies in 1st or 2nd gear with no problems
    • Had the bike in sport mode the entire demo ride
    • Just like the Multistrade, felt like the engine ran out of breath
    • Rico is still smiles thinking about the XDiavel

    Events:

Upcoming events that one or more Loud Pipes! members plan on attending:

    • Ducati XDiavel demo Ride in June or July
    • Moto Vlogging Meetup - May 20th-22nd.
    • 12th Annual Barber Vintage Festival (October 7th-9th, 2016)

43: Long Ride Planning Part 1 with Ted from the Motorcycle Men Apr 28, 2016
    Show notes

Tonight we kick off their long ride planning talking about preparing your bike and yourself. We are joined by Ted from the Motorcycle Men podcast to share his experience with long riding.

Rich called into the Motorcycle Men podcast during their Episode 22 recording.

Rich, Rico, and Ted all where able to get out on their bikes as the east coast weather has made a turn toward warmer weather.

What the guys sipped on during the show:

    • Ted chocolate milk.
    • Rich Hoppy Blonde Ale from New Belgium
    • Rico Lazy Magnolia Pecan Ale

    TOPICS:

Rich views a long ride as riding all day on the bike - not going out meeting guys and just hanging out. A good example of this would be mountain ride discussed in episode 42.

Reading recommendation for preparing the mind and body for long distance riding:Building an Iron Butt (source: BikeBandit.com)

    Rich:

Focus on getting hydrated couple of days before ride
Get a good amount of quality rest
Do a nut and bolt check of bike a few weeks before ride, so you have time to correct larger issues
Plan out a realistic route with some options for change

    Rico:
Perform bike check- breaks, tires, tire pressure, fluids, and chain/belts
Focus on yourself - eat light, hydrate, stretch, etc
Check the weather so know what type of gear you need
Have right gear for the type of riding you plan to do
Have reflective gear if riding at night to make sure you are seen by others

    Ted:
Carry a tire repair kit and tire pump
    Have extra oil and fuel
A must is to have zip ties as they can be very useful in many cases
    Tool kit
Wear compression gear to help with blood flow
Camelbak to allow you drink while riding so you stay hydrated.
Use the street view in Google Maps to have and idea what road will be like.

    Jon:
Have route planned out and everyone be familiar with an overview of the route.
Furkot used to plan trip, which allows you to export to other devices.
Alternative to using dedicated GPS unit - check out an app called Co-Pilot.
For group riding, make sure everyone knows where next stop will be in case group gets split
Carry USB battery pack to provide extra power for devices

    • Check out OutsideHow for some great trip planning information related to camping.

Harley announces a new Sportster: The Roadster The guys really like the bike and how it looks.

One of Patron members Markus sent us a how Harley should have done it. Ted doesn't like and Rich loves it.
Rich gets Ted's opinion of the Moto Guzzi Flying Fortess. Ted - doesn't like the heads sticking out of side. Says batman would buy this bike if he was looking for a bike, also thinks the bike is ugly. Rich loves the bike and is really looking forward to being able to ride it after the release in Sturgis.

The guys talked about the Ducati XDiavel. Ted was able to sit on bike and said the cockpit is too small for his size, but loves the look. Rich and Rico are planning on riding it June, stay tune as there will for sure be a show talking about the XDiavel ride.

    U-TURN:

After the recent helmet tech episode, we spin around and take a quick look at a patent from Honda for blind spot monitoring for bikes. The guys don't really like this nor want it on their bikes.

42: Rico returns, Bagger Mountain Ride, plus Indian and Victory Demo Rides Apr 15, 2016
    Show notes

In this episode we welcome Rico back from his vacation, recharged and ready to rock the show. Rico returns with a bang and the guys get right into talking about a day riding in the mounts. Rich jumped on a rented Street Glide for the occasion to have some Bro-Time and we mix conversation from Rico's attendance of an Indian / Victory Demo days event.

    TOPICS:

    • Rico gave the guys a little review of his vacation with his wife Wendy to Costa Rica.
    • Rich and Rico talk about their meet up and day ride through Caesars head, Brevard (The Square Root Restaurant), Sierra Nevada Brewing, Lake Lure, and OMB as the final stop.
    • Rico attended and Indian / Victory demo event
      • Chief Vintage - Bike was OK, but front felt heavy and didn't like the windshield due to height and his size. Had a rock fly up over windshield and hit his helmet.
      • Chief Dark Horse with stage 1 tuning - Rico was blown off the seat and not due to the lack of windshield and back rest, but the stage 1 tuned motor. All that power and overall feel of the bike, put a smile on his face.
      • Springfield - New bike for 2016 and Rico liked this one as much as the Chieftain.
      • Scout - Fun bike, but was unable to hit the red line (9,000) and Rico's wife Wendy likes it and can see this being her first bike.
      • Scout Sixty - OK bike, nice package for a first bike or perhaps if you intend to only ever buy one, this may fit your bill. Rico would say go with the Scout over the Scout Sixty for him or Wendy.
      • Victory Magnum - Sees why Rich likes the bike. Instrument panel is further away from you when compared to Indian bikes. It still has a good amount of wind buffeting. Bike is very fast and corners well. Overall Rico really enjoyed the bike, and would add it to his stable if he had the funds! Also, Rico labels the bike as the Cadillac due to performance and smooth ride, whereas the Indian is more Lincoln plush and comfy. :)

    Events:

Upcoming events that one or more Loud Pipes! members plan on attending:

      • CVO Pro Street Breakout
      • Rich took video and plans to give more details on the bikes, so keep an eye out on RDub Studios YouTube channel
    • Kevin rented an Indian Chieftain while in Las Vegas. Overall bike was good, but was a little uncomfortable due to his height, placement of the floor broads, and handlebars
    • Rich has completed and released the video from EasyRiders 2016 Bike Show Tour in Charlotte, NC. If you are a Patreon supporter, then you've had access to this video for the past two weeks. :)
    • New Technology - the guys talk about helmets that offer riders either communications, cameras, and even HUD
      • Skully helmet offers 180 degrees, turn by turn for navigation, music, etc. Cost for this helmet is $1500
      • BMW has HUD and it will integrate with a BMW motorcycle
      • Samsung has came up with a smart windshield. Our guest Kevin from the throttled podcast recently covered this topic, check it out for more detail
      • Cranium Helmets currently only a prototype and similar to the Skully helmet. Differs in that is had dual projectors and 210 degree camera coverage
      • Bell has developed a helmet with a 360 degree camera

40: Heated Gear, Harley Custom Kings, Ape Hangers, and More Ride Planning Mar 17, 2016
    Show notes

Matthew Williams joins us again to talk about his new heated gear this season, the Honda Magna project bike, and a big ride coming up in May. Matthew previously appeared on Episode 32

Reminder of our long ride contest. Send us your planned destinations of what you consider a long ride to feedback@rdubstudios.com or use our feedback page. We'll also draw two names from the responses and send you a Loud Pipes t-shirt. Submission deadline is May 1, 2016.

A big thanks to our first Patreon supporter Markus for joining the monthly Patreon production meeting. If this is of interest to you, check out our Patreon page for detail. There are also three more "first five" t-shirts remaining as well at the $5/month level.

    U-TURN

    • Harley's Custom Kings build off is underway, this time with Sportster as the base.

    NEW TOPICS

    • Matthew has been shaking down some new heated gear. We get his take from this winter season and talk about riding in general.
    • http://www.cyclegear.com/SEDICI-HOTWIRED-Heated-Leather-Gloves-With-Controller

    Pros:

    • gets warm very quickly (also a con, see below)
    • windproof and not overly bulky

    Cons:

    • Was hoping the gloves were more a gauntlet, however the do not fit over his textile jacket sleeves
    • Lights on gloves are very hard to see in daylight, Red (Hottest)/ Yellow (Midway)/ Green (Min). Somewhat difficult to turn on when hands are in the gloves. Also, the gear starts at the highest setting.
    • No good documentation on any of the kit, especially wattage.
    • Coat appears to be 90W and gloves are 22W combined. Important to know as a bike's electrical system only supports so much load. ALL heated gear manufacturer's should stress more about this.
    • Be mindful of the polarity, if this is reversed you gear is on full high all the time!

Rich offers an alternative to keep your neck warm

Update on Matthew's Honda Magna project bike

    • Magna needs new carb boots and the front calipers need rebuilding. About $150 in parts to get it fully back to where it should be.
    • Rich likes that V4 sound and is considering a used VFR project bike

    MotoBlogging Meetup

    • Various moto-vloggers from NC, SC, TN, an GA are meeting up in the North Carolina mountains. There will be a group ride, some camping, and the usual shenanigans.
    • We got into some of the planning details, which leads us toward our long riding episode later this year.
    • Possible routes include: The tail of the Dragon, the Skyway, Devil's Whip, and other great roads in the area.
    • Congrats to Matthew for almost reaching 100 subscribers on his YouTube Channel.
    • Sena - Rich has taken step to tech side on bike - Jon and Rich split cost for dual pack Sena 20s.
      • Matthew and Jon tested out with bike to car with Sena
      • Rich - test out bike at all? No, but I did take it out of the box :)

    Events:

    • Auto fair Charlotte Speedway April
    • Long range: Barber - October 2016

39: The Fashionista has an IRON BUTT Mar 03, 2016
    Show notes

Our special guest Deb Gasque from The Fashionista has an IRON BUTT, joins us to share her long distance riding experience. Being someone who likes coffee as much as do, we swapped our usual barley with beans for this episode

    Background

Originally from Utah, Deb moved to South Carolina and lives with her husband and garage full of bikes. Starting out in 2006 as a passenger riding with her husband, she decided to take hold of the bars and ride her own.

    Bikes

SV650 was the first bike, but the husband felt this may be a bit much to learn on (see the next bike).

Honda Rebel 250 - In response to the first bike, Deb was a little put off by the "baby bike" but eventually came to appreciate the weight for learning, especially picking it up.

BMW GS650 (named GOAT after dropping a few times riding in the mountains)

    1994 BMW R1100 RS

    1994 BMW R1100 RSL - "new" bike :)

    The idea

During winter while not much riding is going on, Deb reads and article about about the Iron Butt. Being a lover of a good challenge, Deb started mapping out how to complete the Iron Butt SaddleSore 1000.

    The rides

After some conversation with her husband, the planning was on and off she went. After completing the first Iron Butt ride Deb fell in love with long distance riding and has been hooked since.

In 2015 Deb completed the Bun Burner 1500 within the 36 allotted hours and covered 1600 miles. This year she is planning to do the 50CC. The plan is to leave from Jacksonville, FL and ride to San Diego CA. On her way back she is planning to stop at the Barber Vintage Festival. Look for the Loud Pipes crew to be there for an update on the ride as we enjoy our second trip to Barber.

This episode was great fun for us and we look forward to catching up with Deb in the future.

    Show notes

    CONTEST TIME!

As we start preparing for our big trips of this year, we are working on an episode around the idea of big trips/long rides. We would like to get your feedback on where you are planning to ride this year, for what you would consider a big trip. We will then aggregate the places and add them to the discussion in a future episode. Names will go into a hat and we'll draw two winners to receive a Loud Pipes! t-shirt.

Another way to receive a t-shirt is to support us on Patreon at the $5+ level and there are four remaining as of this posting.

Tilting Motor Works - A revers trike conversion kit that allows you to tilt. Standard kit starts at $9,995 and $12,995 with tilt lock.

Jon asks the guys - If you could go back in time and change something in your life - would you and what would it be.

Jon - Yes - The biggest thing would have been spending more time with his dad and the secondary item would be have taken some cooking classes in college.

Rich - Yes - he would have liked to start his own business sooner.

Rico - Yes - he would like to have spent more time with his grandfather and learn from him about farming.

    Windshield updates

    • Rich - no update as has not been out on road.
    • Rico - works well and helps a lot. Have not ridden at night so not sure how the tint will be yet.

Rico has been working on a 2002 Dodge Dakota SXT 5 speed that his wife picked up for a few hundred. Took all interior out and did a major cleaning, upgraded speakers, and gave it a major detailing.

Rich took the A4 into shop. They had to keep it for a few days so the dealer ship lent him an Audi A6. Really enjoyed the car and had a lot of tech, but for ~65k is a little much for his taste.

    Show notes

In this episode the guys talk about attending the Triumph Bonneville launch party, Rich's take on the Charlotte Easyriders show, and Harley releases two new models. Plus we have Aaron Smith join us from Hawaii.

Rich mentioned that we have our first Pateron sponsor - Markus Arebom from Sweden. Per his Facebook comment the first LoudPipes! t-shirt is headed to Sweden.

We hope all our mid-atlantic and northeast listeners are doing alright with their snow events this season. But not to rub it in, less than week after the storm hit North Carolina we had temperatures in the mid 60's. This allowed for Rich and Rico to get out and take a nice mid-winter ride.

    Easyriders - Charlotte 2016

    • Light crowd and limited bikes on display, Very few cars and vendors
    • Plenty of big wheeled baggers, but Rich saw some he would actually ride
    • One particular bike of interest was a Harley Davidson FL with a half pan head and knucklehead motor (1945/1947)
    • Rich's prediction on next custom trend - Custom Dyna
    • Rico is working on Rich's video he took from show and will be on YouTube very soon.

Rich wished both Rico and Jon a happy birthday. Rico's special day was on December 27th and Jon's was on December 31st.

Jon explained that he was unable to attend Episode 35 due to doggie not doing very well and went to pick her up from the vet hospital. Jon and Natalie had to make a hard choice and have to put Roxy to sleep. She had a great 14 years with Natalie and 12 years with Jon. She was also very loving on Rich when he visited.

Jon also thanked Rich for making a surprise visit to his birthday party that Natalie planned for his 40th birthday.

    • Rich purchased a windshield for the Harley.
      • Another option might be a bat wing style fairing from Memphis Shades
      • It was very easy to install and can be removed without leaving anything on the bike.
      • Rich is still testing, but so far over 70 MPH is not comfortable
