Grand Canyon's path to the NCAA Tournament | Stopping Drew Timme key for an upset | Can Arizona State upset TCU? Mar 17, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are set to take on Grand Canyon, who won the WAC automatic bid despite finishing fifth in the regular season. They went off in Las Vegas, with Bryce Drew's team coming from behind in three tournament games thanks to their hot shooting - 38% from deep as a team.

Kyle Harrison of the WAC Hoops Digest joins to discuss Grand Canyon's path to the NCAA Tournament, and how they will attempt to defend Drew Timme and what the recipe is for them to potentially pull off a stunning upset in March Madness.

Then, we look at conference realignment and whether Grand Canyon and Gonzaga could someday be conference partners in the WCC. We also discuss if SeattleU is a realistic candidate for the WCC, and why Kyle thinks another school from the WAC could be the actual addition for Stu Jackson and the West Coast Conference.

Closing out the show with discussion about Arizona State's big win over Nevada and whether they could parlay that momentum into an upset win over TCU and a date with the Bulldogs in the Round of 32.

How the Gonzaga Bulldogs can avoid first round upset to Grand Canyon | Kaylynne Truong is an All-American Mar 16, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have not lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament since 2008, but a date with a very good shooting Grand Canyon team has the recipe for an upset written all over it.

The Lopes, coached by Bryce Drew, didn't have a great regular season - going 24-11 and only beating one NCAA Tournament team in Montana State. But they got hot in Las Vegas and won the WAC Championship, and with a 38.3% mark from deep as a team and a star in Ray Harrison they are a dangerous 14 seed for Mark Few's team to take on.

Today we look at five keys for the Zags to secure a victory, including pounding the ball to Drew Timme, pressuring GCU's guards, and defending that precious perimeter.

We close out the show discussing the Lady Zags and their 8-9 matchup against Ole Miss at Stanford. Kaylynne Truong and her outside shooting will be a key for a Bulldogs victory - and we also celebrate her being named an All-American Honorable Mention.

Why Gonzaga will win the National Championship | Why they won't | Drew Timme was snubbed Mar 15, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are the highest scoring offensive team in the country, while also boasting the second best field goal percentage, 11th best three point percentage, and 12th best assists per game mark. All that points to Mark Few's team being serious contenders to make a surprise run to the Final 4 and perhaps winning their first National Championship.

Of course, this team also struggles to protect the rim, in pick and roll defensive situations, and even guarding the three point line. No team has won a championship with a KenPom adjD number higher than 22, and Gonzaga's is currently 76. Will that be an issue for the Bulldogs in March?

We close out the show discussing Drew Timme being named an All-American second teamer, for the third year in a row. With a career-high in points, rebounds, and assists, and Gonzaga's toughest schedule yet, should Timme have received first team nod over Marcus Sasser or Jalen Wilson?

Could we get a Gonzaga-Saint Mary's rematch? | Previewing West region | Will Malachi Smith be back? Mar 14, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs and Saint Mary's Gaels are both in the west region, although a matchup between the two is unlikely barring a big upset by the Gaels over Kansas, or perhaps a gift from Arkansas in an early win over the Jayhawks.

Today is a delayed mailbag episode and we discuss who the biggest key for a deep Zags run in March is, Malachi Smith's status for next year, the epicness of Las Vegas as a college basketball conference tournament destination, which team in the west could pull off a major upset, if Marquette deserved a two seed, and whether auto-bid winners should have to participate in the play-in games or not.

We close out the show discussing Saint Mary's with Zack Farmer of the unofficial WCC hoops podcast, including if a rematch is plausible, their draw against VCU, and having to travel across the country to Albany.

GREAT draw for Gonzaga Bulldogs | How Grand Canyon could pull off an upset | Lady Zags in Seattle Mar 13, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs landed a three seed in the west region of the 2023 NCAA Tournament, a favorable draw by the Selection Sunday committee pitting the Bulldogs against WAC opponent and potential future WCC member Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon shoots over 38% from deep and is led by Ray Harrison, but they finished fifth in the WAC and shouldn't be too much trouble for Mark Few's team. A second round matchup looms with a six seeded TCU team missing star forward Eddie Lampkin, or if the play-in winner between Arizona State and Nevada beats TCU.

We take a look at the rest of the region as well, including a banged up UCLA team, a fading Kansas squad, Saint Mary's as the five seed, former No. 1 team UConn as the four seed, and even Boise State and Northwestern as an intriguing 7-10 matchup.

We close out the show looking at Lisa Fortier's program, who received a nine seed in Seattle facing No. 8 Ole Miss - with a potential date against Stanford looming in the second round.

Nolan Hickman key to deep March run for Gonzaga | What new WCC commissioner Stu Jackson means for Gonzaga Mar 10, 2023

Show notes

Drew Timme and Julian Strawther are the most important players for a deep March run by the Gonzaga Bulldogs, but the ceiling for Mark Few's team will come down to the performance of Nolan Hickman - who has redefined his game this season and is playing the best basketball of his career.

Stu Jackson is the new commissioner of the West Coast Conference, and as a SeattleU alumni we discuss if that will factor into the WCC's future plans - while also discussing Jackson's introductory press conference and how his appointment will impact Gonzaga, who doesn't seem like they are going anywhere anytime soon after more comments from Brett Yormark of the Big-12 indicated they are waiting to see what happens to the Pac-12 before making more moves.

Finally, we close out the show discussing Baylor's loss to Iowa State, Marquette's narrow win over Saint John's, and the loss of Jaylen Clark for UCLA and how all of it could impact the Bulldogs on Selection Sunday.

Gonzaga SHOULD pursue Fardaws Aimaq in transfer portal | Why Anton Watson will be a 2024 draft pick Mar 09, 2023

Show notes

Texas Tech big man Fardaws Aimaq is back in the NCAA transfer portal after being a high-priority target for Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs last offseason. With Drew Timme making it official, will Aimaq choose to come to Spokane this time? And after an injury-riddled and up-and-down season in Lubbock, should Gonzaga still make him a high priority?

Anton Watson has not committed to leaving after his fourth season in Spokane, so we discuss what him returning could look like and why he could easily play his way into the 2024 NBA draft conversation if he returns.

Finally, we close out the show discussing Gonzaga's 2023-24 frontcourt as a whole - what it would look like with Aimaq and Watson together, where Ben Gregg and Efton Reid would fit in, and what next year might hold for Kaden Perry, Braden Huff, and newcomer Alex Toohey.

Gonzaga Bulldogs dominate Saint Mary's Gaels to win WCC Championship | Why this team can win it all Mar 08, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs dominated the Saint Mary's Gaels in Las Vegas on Tuesday to win the WCC Tournament Championship. Drew Timme had 18 points and broke Gonzaga's all-time scoring record, set by Frank Burgess over 50 years ago, while Anton Watson had another outstanding performance and Nolan Hickman hit four threes.

The Gaels shot just 33% from the field in a disastrous game for Randy Bennett's team, and GU's improved defense showcased how this team could shock the world and make it to the National Championship game.

We also discuss what this win means for bracketology, whether it could help the Zags land on the two line, and which games fans should be paying attention to this week for seeding purposes.

Finally, we close out the show discussing Lisa Fortier and the women's team losing to Portland, and what it means for their seeding in March. A potential second round matchup with South Carolina is less than ideal, but might be "fair" considering this team's subpar NET ranking.

Gonzaga Bulldogs advance to WCC Championship with win over San Francisco, setting up SMC rematch Mar 07, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs defeated the Dons of San Francisco in the WCC semifinals at the Orleans Arena on Monday night, setting up a showdown against the Saint Mary's Gaels for the championship.

Anton Watson had 20 points and Ben Gregg hit four threes, as USF chose not to defend Gonzaga's big men around the perimeter - a decision that may have cost them the game and ended the legendary career of point guard Kahlil Shabazz.

Saint Mary's sent BYU out of the WCC without having ever won a conference title, although the Cougars kept things interesting in the second half by using a press to stop the Gaels. Will Gonzaga once again utilize that 1-2-2 zone press to stop Aidan Mahaney, Logan Johnson, and the Gaels?

That is one of a handful of keys to a GU victory, including getting Drew Timme involved early, letting Julian Strawther cook, and trying to get into Randy Bennett's bench.
