Talkin' Gonzaga, Chet Holmgren, Bubble Madness, and the WCC with Tristan Freeman Mar 11, 2022

Show notes

Gonzaga has nearly two weeks off while we await the results of Selection Sunday and the start of NCAA Tournament, so Tristan Freeman of Busting Brackets joins the show. Andy and Tristan discuss his love for Gonzaga - even as a Pittsburgh native - and his thoughts on this year's team compared to last year's and the emergence of Chet Holmgren.

Then, in the second segment, Andy and Tristan discuss the upcoming tournament and which high level teams Gonzaga would match up well against (Villanova, Purdue) and which teams might present more of a challenge (Auburn, Duke). The guys also touch on the bubble madness currently taking place, and what it could mean for San Francisco and BYU.

And finally, Patton and Freeman discuss the WCC at-large, touching on what the conference can do to sustain this run of success by utilizing the transfer portal and keeping their current coaches, while embracing the role mid-majors play in the college basketball landscape.

A jam-packed, fun episode for Gonzaga fans!

What Drew Timme's latest NIL deal could mean for his future with the Gonzaga Bulldogs Mar 10, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs have a long gap before their next game, so in today's episode we take a look at some recruiting updates, including the de-commitment of Skyy Clark from Kentucky (could he be the next Nolan Hickman?) as well as an update on priority recruit Anthony Black and 2023 target Dusty Stromer, as well as a graduate transfer the Zags have expressed interest in.

We also talk about Drew Timme's latest NIL deal and what it could mean for his future at Gonzaga.

The second segment is dedicated to the NCAA Tournament bubble after losses by Wake Forest and Xavier have opened the door, ever so slightly, for BYU to sneak back into the conversation.

Finally, the Gonzaga Baseball team is 10-2 after sweeping Cal-State Fullerton and Oklahoma State, so they get plenty of love in the final segment.

Backcourt dominates as Gonzaga Bulldogs secure WCC Championship with win over Saint Mary's Mar 09, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are WCC Champions once again, defeating the Saint Mary's Gaels by a score of 82-69 despite an off-shooting night from Chet Holmgren and low production from Drew Timme, as the pair had just 18 points combined. Andrew Nembhard had 19 on his way to the Most Outstanding Player award, while Julian Strawther added 16 and Rasir Bolton had 18.

The Zags likely locked up the overall No. 1 seed with this victory, meaning they should play in Portland in the first two rounds. Who will be the No. 2 seed in their region? What does this mean for Arizona? How about Saint Mary's?

Finally, Andy discusses the Lady Zags who punched their ticket to the big dance with a WCC Championship victory over BYU. Locked on Zags - Part of the Locked on Podcast Network.

Gonzaga Bulldogs advance to WCC championship despite sloppy second half against San Francisco Mar 08, 2022

Show notes

Host Andy Patton recaps the Gonzaga Bulldogs' win over the San Francisco Dons on Monday night. Chet Holmgren, Drew Timme, and Anton Watson each had huge nights against a short-handed USF team, while Andrew Nembhard nearly recorded a double-double as the Zags advanced to their 25th consecutive WCC championship game.

However, Gonzaga's play in the final five minutes was uninspiring and, frankly, cause for concern - which is what Patton discussed in the second segment. Will the Zags respond well to full-court press in the NCAA Tournament? Why was Mark Few unwilling to put the pedal to the medal against Todd Golden's squad?

Finally, Andy reviews the other WCC semifinal game between Saint Mary's and Santa Clara, and previews the upcoming rematch between the Zags and the Gaels slated for Tuesday evening.

Gonzaga's Chet Holmgren and Drew Timme take home hardware as WCC Tournament gets underway Mar 04, 2022

Show notes

Host Andy Patton begins the show talking about the first round of action in the WCC Tournament, with USD defeating Pepperdine and LMU blowing out Pacific. While these games likely won't impact Gonzaga, they could impact the NCAA Tournament bubble if they can pull off upsets on Saturday.

Then, Andy talks about the WCC Awards and some NCAA awards as well, including Chet Holmgren and Andrew Nembhard who are up for the Karl Malone and Bob Cousy awards, respectively, while Chet is also up for Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and already won WCC Newcomer and Defensive Player of the Year. Drew Timme was the conference's Player of the Year, while Julian Strawther and Rasir Bolton were named All-conference honorable mentions.

Finally, Andy discusses a group of former Zags, including Brock Ravet who is now an assistant basketball coach in Washington, Kevin Pangos who did not report to CSKA Moscow after signing with the Russian team, and NBA updates on Jalen Suggs, Corey Kispert, Rui Hachimura, and Brandon Clarke.

Ken Pomeroy shows love to Gonzaga and the WCC, and discusses Chet Holmgren and Drew Timme Mar 03, 2022

Show notes

Host Andy Patton is joined on today's episode by the godfather of college basketball analytics, Ken Pomeroy. Ken talks about how his vision for college basketball analytics 20 years ago turned into this go-to site for the sport, and his mentality to go create something that didn't previously exist. Ken and Andy also discuss Gonzaga's meteoric rise, as well as his recent article discussing the Zags record against Power-6 schools over the past five years (39-11) and how they are doing that against elite level competition, while absolutely dominating the WCC.

Then, in the second segment, Andy and Ken discuss Chet Holmgren and the difference he makes for this team as they head into the NCAA Tournament. They also discuss Anton Watson and how hard it is to quantify defensive accomplishments in basketball, and Drew Timme and his case for the National Player of the Year - even though the national media has taken him out of the conversation.

And finally, Patton and Pomeroy discuss the WCC and the season Randy Bennett and Saint Mary's have had, as well as the resurgence from San Francisco and a developing Santa Clara squad. Will the bottom half of the WCC catch up with the top half, and will that impact how people view the conference and Gonzaga in the future?

A jam-packed, fun episode for Gonzaga fans!

Talkin' Chet Holmgren, WCC Tournament, Lady Zags, and more with Brenna Greene of KREM Mar 02, 2022

Show notes

Host Andy Patton is joined on today's episode by KREM sports director Brenna Greene. Brenna discusses her upcoming week covering the WCC Tournament, what it's like be in the Kennel now that fans (and students) are back, and now NIL deals have afforded media more opportunities to interact with athletes.

Then, in the second segment, Andy and Brenna discuss Gonzaga's men's team and their strengths and weakness heading into the WCC Tournament. Will poor bench play once again hurt them in the Field of 68? Is Chet Holmgren a big enough difference-maker defensively? What's going on with Anton Watson? And how much does this team miss Kaden Perry?

And finally, Patton and Greene discuss the women's team and their path to the NCAA Tournament. A win over BYU has eluded the Lady Zags so far, but they may not need it to still make the Field of 68. Melody Kempton, Cierra Walker and the Truong Twins will need big time performances for this team to make some noise in March, however.
