What the NBA draft combine means for Drew Timme and Julian Strawther's future at Gonzaga May 20, 2022

Show notes

Four Gonzaga Bulldogs, Andrew Nembhard, Julian Strawther, Drew Timme, and Chet Holmgren, participated in at least part of the 2022 NBA draft combine this past week. Holmgren and Nembhard aren't coming back to Mark Few's squad next year, but Timme and Strawther's performance this week gives us some clues as to whether the pair will be back in Spokane next season or not.

Today's episode discusses what some of the results mean for our Zags. Strawther shot the heck out of the ball, but will his underwhelming measurements and the fact he didn't participate in the scrimmage hurt his draft stock? Timme played well in the scrimmage and has a very desirable wingspan, but his agility testing was subpar - so what does that mean?

The second segment is a seven minute interview with Gonzaga transfer Efton Reid, conducted by KREM's Brenna Greene. Reid talks about his time in the transfer portal and why he believes GU is the perfect fit for his game.

Finally, we end the week sharing a lovely story of passionate fandom for Gonzaga, starting with Ronny Turiaf's afro and ending with the passing of baseball associate head coach Danny Evans for Fan Story Friday: https://linktr.ee/LockedOnZags.

Previewing the WCC Tournament for the Gonzaga Bulldogs Baseball program May 19, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs team have been one of the best stories in college baseball this season, heading into a weekend series against San Diego in first place in the WCC and on track to host a regional for the first time in school history.

Joining Locked on Zags today is Shotgun Spratling, who writes at D1Baseball.com and covers west coast college baseball. Shotgun and Andy talk about Gonzaga's emergence as a baseball powerhouse, the pitching of Gabriel Hughes, Tristan Vrieling, and William Kempner, and of course some words on the tragic passing of coach Danny Evans.

The pair also preview the upcoming series against the Toreros and the new-look WCC Tournament, which features six teams instead of four, and Shotgun tells us which teams to watch for in Omaha and why he believes college baseball is behind basketball and football for national relevance.

Mailbag Monday: Analyzing a Hunter Sallis and Nolan Hickman starting backcourt for Gonzaga May 16, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs already added Efton Reid for next year's roster, but Mark Few and his staff could be looking to make even more additions, particularly to this team's young, inexperienced backcourt. Would Tyrese Hunter or Kevin McCullar push one or both of Nolan Hickman or Hunter Sallis to the bench? What about a return from Rasir Bolton? Should Zag fans be satisfied if Sallis and Hickman are both starters next season?

Today is mailbag Monday, and discussing GU's backcourt is just one of many topics covered, including:

Who would win, US born Zags or International born Zags?
Giving out awards for the Zags in the NBA
A proposed solution to the NIL situation
Revisiting Gonzaga's potential move to the Mountain West
Is this already the most successful Gonzaga baseball season of all-time?

And more!

Gonzaga's not the only WCC team adding talented players via NCAA transfer portal May 13, 2022

Show notes

Four Gonzaga Bulldogs, Andrew Nembhard, Julian Strawther, Drew Timme, and Chet Holmgren, were invited to participate in the NBA Draft combine next week. Noticeably absent is Rasir Bolton - could the transfer guard return to Spokane for one more year under Mark Few?

Today's episode discusses what the draft combine means for our Zags, and we also take a full look around the WCC and the transfer additions, including two huge newcomers for Steve Lavin and the San Diego Toreros - Jaiden Delaire from Stanford and Eric Williams from Oregon - while also looking at BYU and USF's recent additions.

Finally, a quick look at the GU baseball program ahead of their weekend series against Santa Clara, and we end the week sharing a lovely story of friendship and Pryzemek Karnowski for Fan Story Friday: https://linktr.ee/LockedOnZags.

Discussing NIL opportunities for Gonzaga student-athletes with Friends of Spike's executive team May 12, 2022

Show notes

NIL has dominated the conversation around college athletics over the past year, including at Gonzaga University. Student-athletes are now getting paid for their name, image, and likeness, and a new initiative called Friends of Spike now exists to help these student-athletes earn compensation, now that the NCAA has (finally) allowed them to do so.

Joining Locked on Zags today is the executive leadership team at Friends of Spike, former Gonzaga hoopers Matt Santangelo and Shaniqua Nilles. Matt and Shaniqua discuss how they got involved with Friends of Spike and how the reception has been for the program so far.

The pair also discuss how they would have reacted to NIL opportunities when they were in school, how it helps these student-athletes in the short term and long term, the concern about fair compensation for student-athletes in women's programs, and of course share how you, dear listener, can get involved if you so choose.

Gonzaga Bulldogs season in review: The Five Walk-Ons May 11, 2022

Show notes

Mark Few's Gonzaga Bulldogs were an extremely deep and talented bunch during the 2021-22 season. Chet Holmgren, Drew Timme, Andrew Nembhard, Julian Strawther, and Ras Bolton gave the Zags one of the best years in school history, but they weren't the only reason this team went to the Sweet 16 for the eighth year in a row.

Here at Locked on Zags, our season-in-review series is wrapping up, and the twelfth and final episode in the series is all about Gonzaga's five walk-ons - Will Graves, Matthew Lang, Joe Few, Abe Eagle, and Colby Brooks. We take a look at their contributions in late game situations last season, as well as reviewing the best and worst case scenarios from before the year began.

Finally, we take a look at the future for these five guys. Will Will Graves land at the D-1 level after entering the transfer portal? Is Matthew Lang going to come back? What about Eagle and Brooks - who have been here two years but haven't stepped onto the court in a game yet? All that and more here: https://linktr.ee/LockedOnZags

Gonzaga's transfer portal targets, and why this bracket buster proposal could save college hoops May 10, 2022

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs aren't done updating their roster for the 22-23 season, even after adding LSU big man Efton Reid. Iowa State's Tyrese Hunter and Texas Tech's Kevin McCullar are both priority targets for Mark Few and his staff, and the team could do even more depending on the future of Rasir Bolton, Drew Timme, and Julian Strawther.

Joining Locked on Zags today is Connor Hope, Connor is a Zag grad and CBB analyst for HeatCheckCBB. Connor and I discuss Reid's fit with the Zags, whether he would play well alongside Drew Timme, and his defensive chops in the first segment. Then we dig in to 2023 recruit Dusty Stromer and who his game reminds us of - and why he fits well in Spokane.

The pair also discusses both Hunter and McCullar, how they would fit at Gonzaga, and Connor offers who he thinks is the better (and more likely) candidate to end up in the blue and white next year. Finally, the show ends with some discussion about the latest Bracket Busters proposal, how it would impact the Zags, and which types of opponents Gonzaga will hopefully run into if this proposal comes to fruition.
