Locked On Zags - Daily Podcast On Gonzaga Bulldogs Basketball

Latest Episodes:

Grant Nelson is the unicorn of the transfer portal, does he fit at Gonzaga? | Tre Woodbury profile May 02, 2023

Show notes

North Dakota State star forward Grant Nelson entered the NCAA transfer portal. Nelson's ability to stretch the floor, handle the ball, and protect the rim make him one of college basketball's biggest unicorns, and Mark Few and Gonzaga know how to handle these kind of players. Could he be a fit in Spokane despite the Bulldogs crowded frontcourt?

There's no doubt the Zags have a greater need in the guard room, and Utah Valley graduate transfer Tre Woodbury might be a perfect fit in the Malachi Smith mold, having played a big role for the Wolverines and emerging as a sharpshooter.

We close out the show discussing Taran Armstrong, who ended up not transferring up and instead will play next year in the NBL. Is this good or bad for college hoops?

Aziz Bandaogo is the PERFECT transfer portal target for Gonzaga | Updates on Efton Reid & Dom Harris May 01, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs made huge transfer portal additions in Ryan Nembhard and Graham Ike last week, but with spots remaining it makes sense for Mark Few to continue to pursue players to bring to Spokane. Today we discuss Utah Valley center Aziz Bandaogo, who replaced Fardaws Aimaq and finished third in the entire NCAA in blocks last year. He's a double transfer so he might have to sit out a year, which could make him even more appealing to Mark Few's team.

Speaking of double transfers, Efton Reid is currently deciding between joining Hunter Sallis at Wake Forest or transferring back to his hometown and playing at VCU, where he would almost certainly get a waiver. Why is the system set up to punish transfers unless they play closer to home? The NCAA's inconsistent policing of double transfers needs to change.

We close out the show discussing Dominick Harris, who is planning to visit BYU and now has a connection at Cal after his girlfriend, former Gonzaga wing McKayla Williams, transferred to join the Golden Bears.

Gonzaga Bulldogs transfer portal target: Toledo guard RayJ Dennis | Zags history in the NFL Draft Apr 28, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs made huge transfer portal additions in Ryan Nembhard and Graham Ike last week, but with spots remaining it makes sense for Mark Few to continue to pursue players to bring to Spokane. Today we discuss Toledo point guard RayJ Dennis, who entered the portal on Wednesday and immediately ranked third among available players. Dennis played for Gonzaga assistant coach RJay Barsh at Boise State, can that connection help bring him to Spokane?

The NFL Draft is this weekend, and we throw it back to 2014 when a former Zag - Demetri Goodson - was drafted in the sixth round by the Green Bay Packers after he spent three years playing defensive back at Baylor.

We close out the show discussing the Gonzaga baseball team and their current four game losing streak, and how they can break the trend at home this weekend against Pacific.

Gonzaga's Anton Watson declares for 2023 NBA Draft | Hunter Sallis transfers to Wake Forest Apr 26, 2023

Show notes

Gonzaga Bulldogs forward Anton Watson is among the five Zags who declared early for the 2023 NBA draft, joining Drew Timme, Julian Strawther, Malachi Smith, and Steele Venters. We look at reasons why Watson should return to Spokane, even after Mark Few's team added Graham Ike, and why it makes sense for him to go through the draft process and hear from scouts and analysts.

We then discuss the other four NBA draft entrants and give odds on whether they will be back in Spokane next season or if they will remain in the draft process and what that could look like for each of them.

We close out the show discussing Hunter Sallis transferring to Wake Forest, where he will play under Steve Forbes. Forbes turned transfer guards Alondes Williams into the ACC Player of the year and Tyree Appleby into a All-ACC player, can he do the same with Sallis? And where will Efton Reid and Dominick Harris end up?

Gonzaga Bulldogs transfer portal targets: FSU center Naheem McLeod & UT-A guard Chendall Weaver Apr 25, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs made huge transfer portal additions in Ryan Nembhard and Graham Ike last week, but with spots remaining it makes sense for Mark Few to continue to pursue players to bring to Spokane. Today we discuss former Florida State center Naheem McLeod, a 7'4 shot blocking machine with untapped offensive potential who assistant coach Rjay Barsh is trying to bring out west.

The Zags haven't yet been connected to UT-Arlington transfer guard Chendall Weaver, but he was the WAC Freshman of the Year last year and would give the Bulldogs reliable outside shooting off the bench and a developmental prospect.

We close out the show discussing what's next for the Lady Zags, who still added Naya Ojukwu from Utah and lost McKayla Williams to the portal.

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs sent a message with Ryan Nembhard commitment: We are still top dog Apr 24, 2023

Show notes

Gonzaga landing both Ryan Nembhard and Graham Ike in the NCAA transfer portal was a statement from Mark Few to the rest of the NCAA: we are still a power player. Despite perceived disadvantages from NIL and worry that Tommy Lloyd was the mastermind behind Gonzaga's recruiting success, Few and the staff went ahead and stole a huge target from under Arizona's nose in Nembhard - is that addition enough for the Zags to sneak into the preseason Top 10? Or does it depend on Anton Watson, Malachi Smith, and a few other potential portal additions?

We close out the show discussing Graham Ike, a 6'9 forward from Wyoming who averaged nearly 20 and 10 with the Cowboys in 2021-22. Ike spoke about why he chose Gonzaga and how his foot is healing and when he'll be ready to contribute next year.

Gonzaga Bulldogs land transfer portal stars Ryan Nembhard and Graham Ike! | And they aren't done yet Apr 21, 2023

Show notes

Ryan Nembhard shocked the college basketball world and picked Gonzaga and Mark Few over Tommy Lloyd and Arizona, following in his brother Andrew's footsteps and instantly giving the Zags one of the better point guards in the country.

As if that wasn't enough, the Zags also landed Graham Ike, a 6'9 forward from Wyoming who averaged nearly 20 and 10 with the Cowboys in 2021-22. How healthy he is and how he meshes with Anton Watson remains to be seen, but this Gonzaga team is not messing around.

We close out the show discussing what's next for the Zags, who still have one open scholarship and need another guard.

Gonzaga Bulldogs 2022-23 season in review: Guard Nolan Hickman | Will he be starting PG next year? Apr 21, 2023

Show notes

Gonzaga Bulldogs forward Ben Gregg had his best season in Spokane last year, passing Efton Reid on the depth chart and showcasing his tenacious offensive rebounding and outside shooting. We discuss his history, how he ended up at GU a semester early, and his performance this past year.

We then look at my best and worst case scenario projections for Gregg from October of last year, and how true they ended up coming this season.

We close out the show discussing Gregg's role next season, and what that could look like without Drew Timme or Reid. Will Anton Watson come back? Are Kaden Perry and Braden Huff playing time threats? What about Graham Ike? All right here!

Former Gonzaga Bulldog stars Domantas Sabonis and Rui Hachimura dominate NBA playoff headlines Apr 20, 2023

Show notes

Former Gonzaga Bulldogs center Domantas Sabonis is making headlines for his scuffle with Golden State forward Draymond Green, which resulted in Green getting suspended for Game 3 of the series between the Warriors and Kings. Is Sabonis too physical, or is the NBA pushing back against an old school player? How will his injury impact the rest of this series?

Sabonis isn't the only former Zag making NBA headlines, as Rui Hachimura has scored 20+ points in back-to-back playoff games, becoming the first Laker to do so off the bench since Magic Johnson in 1996. Is Playoff Rui a real thing?

We close out the show discussing the Gonzaga Baseball team, who is 3-6 this month and needs a big series victory this weekend in Portland against the Pilots.

Gonzaga Bulldogs offer pair of elite class of 2025 recruits | Why Graham Ike is a great fit for Zags Apr 19, 2023

Show notes

The Gonzaga Bulldogs extended offers to a pair of high ranking recruits in the class of 2025, Wasatch guard Isiah Harwell and forward Nik Khamenia. Harwell plays at Nolan Hickman's old school, while Khamenia played AAU ball with Colby Brooks. The Athletic's Tobias Bass joins me today to discuss Gonzaga's recruitment of these two top-65 players, and how they might fit in Spokane.

Then, we discuss the visits of both Graham Ike and Ryan Nembhard. Is there a chance Nembhard comes to Gonzaga or is he locked in at Arizona? And why Ike is a great fit, especially with a lack of top tier centers available in the portal.

We close out the show discussing Taran Armstrong, who remains a solid fit for the Zags, and how his addition could change the role for Nolan Hickman in a significant (but good) way! We also discuss another potential target for Mark Few, Aaron Estrada, who has played at Saint Peter's, Oregon, and two years at Hofstra where he won CAA Player of the Year.
