Coming to terms with José Abreu's departure from the Chicago White Sox as MLB free agency is in full swing Nov 11, 2022

Show notes

Coming to terms with José Abreu's departure from the Chicago White Sox as MLB free agency is in full swing. José Abreu has been a staple on the South Side since 2014 and if all the speculation is true, Abreu will sign with another team in the near future. Abreu is a White Sox legend and his accomplishments will hopefully never fade away. As MLB free agency gets going, will the White Sox be aggressive or continue to operate like a small market team? If the White Sox elect to use the trade market as a means to improve, could Lucas Giolito really be dealt? And since the fall of 2016, when the great rebuild was initiated, the Chicago White Sox have just two playoff wins and one division title. It was not supposed to be this way.

Rick Hahn addressed areas of concern for the Chicago White Sox at the GM meetings in Las Vegas Nov 10, 2022

Show notes

Rick Hahn addressed areas of concern for the Chicago White Sox at the GM meetings in Las Vegas. Hahn spoke recently about the White Sox internal options at second base but did not rule out the chance for external help. Players like Romy Gonzalez, Leury Garcia, Danny Mendick and Lenyn Sosa are all options but White Sox fans are hoping for something better. With A.J. Pollock declining his option, the White Sox will need to address the outfield. Could Oscar Colas be the right fielder on Opening Day in 2023? Hahn was noncommittal, of course, but spoke highly of Colas and recognizes his talent. What will the Sox do about solidifying the starting rotation? Could 2023 be the year of Davis Martin? And, you will not want to hear where Jose Abreu may be headed.

Dylan Cease is a Cy Young finalist and A.J. Pollock decides on his future with the Chicago White Sox Nov 09, 2022

Show notes

Dylan Cease is a Cy Young finalist and A.J. Pollock decides on his future with the Chicago White Sox. It seemed like a sure thing but A.J. Pollock surprised a lot of Chicago White Sox fans by declining his $13 million 2023 option. Pollock decided on a $5 million buyout instead and has provided the Sox with perhaps an unforeseen scenario. How will the White Sox use that money? Hopefully it will be used to address the various roster question marks. White Sox starter, Dylan Cease, is a finalist in the Cy Young voting. How have the White Sox fared over the years when it comes to MLB Awards. Maybe the White Sox should just celebrate their own history instead of waiting for national recognition? The Sox had a top payroll in 2022 but missed the playoffs. It's not necessarily how much you spend but what you spend it on.

Tim Anderson is in and Josh Harrison is out... so what does that mean for the Chicago White Sox in 2023? Nov 08, 2022

Show notes

Tim Anderson is in and Josh Harrison is out... so what does that mean for the Chicago White Sox in 2023? Both decisions were expected but will the White Sox now make a big splash at second base or simply go with internal options? It was around this time last year that the White Sox declined an option on Cesar Hernandez and Sox fans thought that a long term solution at second base would be what the White Sox would target. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The White Sox need to address the starting rotation. Could a homecoming by Chris Bassitt, Jose Quintana or Carlos Rodon actually happen? Historically, November has not been a month where the White Sox have attacked the trade or free agent markets but maybe with a new manager and direction, the Sox will change tradition.

The Chicago White Sox have decisions to make before a potential new look roster can take shape Nov 07, 2022

Show notes

The Chicago White Sox have decisions to make before a potential new look roster can take shape. With the World Series wrapped up, free agency has begun and the trade market is open for business. This is a time of hope and sometimes delusion for White Sox fans. How high will White Sox owner, Jerry Reinsdorf, allow the spending to go? Spoiler: It's usually a question of, how low will the spending go. The White Sox have financial constraints but have opportunities to make their money go far. Will the White Sox bring Josh Harrison back? Is Jose Abreu in the cards for 2023? Deciding on Harrison and definitely Abreu will show what characteristics the roster will have under Pedro Grifol. We know defensive will be a priority as will offensive analytics. Sources point to Matt Tosar being appointed as the new hitting coach. The Pedro Grifol era has begun and the White Sox have a lot or work to do.

The Chicago White Sox made it official and announced Pedro Grifol as their new manager Nov 04, 2022

Show notes

The Chicago White Sox made it official and announced Pedro Grifol as their new manager. The White Sox held a press conference on Thursday morning to introduce Pedro Grifol as the 42nd manager in franchise history. General manager, Rick Hahn, was also on hand to talk about Pedro Grifol and provide insight into the hiring process. Grifol said all the right things and laid out some early plans on what fans can expect from the White Sox in 2023. Grifol prioritizes: communication, playing with passion as well as pride and fundamentally sound baseball. Hahn appeared very pleased to be taking the White Sox into this new direction. Former Toronto Blue Jays manager, Charlie Montoyo, will be the new Sox bench coach and Ethan Katz as well as Curt Hasler will be retained but fans should expect many new faces on the coaching staff. Grifol has an impressive resume however this will be his first MLB managerial experience. Can he get the players to buy into his message?

AJ Pollock should be exercising his option as the Chicago White Sox will be exploring their own Nov 03, 2022

Show notes

AJ Pollock should be exercising his option as the Chicago White Sox will be exploring their own. Pollock is set to make a lot of money and there's no reason he will turn down that opportunity to test the market. Pollock was traded to the White Sox for Craig Kimbrel just a week before Opening Day 2022. Finally, the White Sox had an answer to their outfield struggles. Pollock put up solid numbers in 2021 and brought a veteran presence as well as playoff experience. Pollock's arrival was met with a lot of excitement on the South Side but an inconsistent April led to a shaky season. Pollock battled a hamstring issue early on and struggled to get into a groove once he returned to the lineup. His numbers fell off from 2021 and he bounced all over the outfield for the White Sox. With Pollock most certainly in the fold for the White Sox in 2023, what other options does the team have?

Pedro Grifol is expected to be named the next Chicago White Sox manager Nov 02, 2022

Show notes

Pedro Grifol is expected to be named the next Chicago White Sox manager. No shortage of rumors, reports and statements that claim longtime Kansa City Royals coach, Pedro Grifol, will be named the next White Sox manager perhaps before the World Series ends. Grifol has been the Royals bench coach for the last few seasons but has held a variety a different roles within the organization since he came over in 2013. Apparently, Grifol thoroughly impressed during his interviews and Jerry Reisndorf, Kenny Williams and Rick Hahn were all in consensus. Grifol does not have prior managerial experience and has not been part of a championship team since 2015 but he is an outside hire. More rumors circulated that several White Sox coaches will not be asked back and former Toronto Blue Jays manager, Charlie Montoyo, will be the next White Sox bench coach. It appears that the White Sox are interested in change... hopefully it does not stop with Pedro Grifol.

Liam Hendriks continued to be a force both on and off the field for the Chicago White Sox in 2022 Nov 01, 2022

Show notes

Liam Hendriks continued to be a force both on and off the field for the Chicago White Sox in 2022. Hendriks came to the White Sox in January of 2021. It was a huge off-season move for the White Sox as they prepared to transition from 'rebuild' mode to 'win now' mode. Hendriks was an All-Star in 2021 and won the AL Reliver of the Year award. Hendriks offers no shortage of emotion and passion when he's on the mound. He's got electric stuff and was once again an All-Star for the White Sox in 2022. An injury sidelined him for three weeks in June and limited his ability to pitch more than one inning at a time down the stretch. Hendriks is hoping a normal off-season will help him get healthy and perhaps get him back to his 2021 form. Hendriks is a fan favorite and vocal leader for the White Sox. He did not mince words in regards to the White Sox shortcomings this past season. Hopefully he gets healthy and his ready to contribute in 2023.

Josh Harrison was the latest in a long list of Opening Day second baseman for the Chicago White Sox Oct 31, 2022

Show notes

Josh Harrison was the latest in a long list of Opening Day second baseman for the Chicago White Sox. Since 2013, there has been a different second baseman on Opening Day. In 2022, Josh Harrison was the choice. Harrison was signed just a few weeks before the season started and ended up playing 90 games at the position for the Sox. In total, seven players occupied second baseman over the course of the 2022 season for the White Sox. Harrison could potentially be back in 2023 if the Sox pick up his option but perhaps the White Sox need to invest in a long term solution? The White Sox need to get better defensively and also should look to acquire some power at the second base position. If it's not Josh Harrison in 2023, there are several in house options but whatever the Sox decide to do... hopefully they find some consistency.
