José Abreu heads to the Houston Astros and the Chicago White Sox begin a new era Nov 29, 2022

Show notes

Jose Abreu heads to the Houston Astros and the Chicago White Sox begin a new era. It's been a long goodbye and on Monday, White Sox fans had to face the inevitable. Jose Abreu reportedly signed a three year, roughly $60 million dollar deal to play for the Houston Astros. Abreu spent nine seasons in Chicago and was beloved by Sox fans. He won the AL Rookie of the Year in 2014 and captured the AL MVP in 2020. Abreu will go down as a White Sox legend and should see his number 79 retired by the organization eventually. The White Sox front office did not do enough to surround him with the necessary talent to make a serious run at a title. Also, we found out that Mike Clevinger's deal with the Sox is for one year, $12 million dollars. The Sox were aggressive on Clevinger so early in the offseason. It's a surprising move but hopefully focus can now be shifted to other areas of need.

Chicago White Sox sign former Cleveland and San Diego starting pitcher Mike Clevinger Nov 28, 2022

Show notes

Chicago White Sox sign former Cleveland and San Diego starting pitcher Mike Clevinger. The White Sox were looking to add another starting pitcher and it looks like they got their man. It has been reported that the White Sox and Clevinger are in agreement on a one year deal, pending a physical. Clevinger spent parts of five seasons with Cleveland before being traded in August of 2020 to the San Diego Padres. Clevinger did not pitch in 2021 due to his second Tommy John surgery and started the beginning of the 2022 season on the injured list. This past season was a mediocre showing for Clevinger and Sox fans are hoping pitching coach, Ethan Katz, can work his magic on the latest reclamation project. Signing Mike Clevinger to a low risk deal is definitely not the exciting move fans wanted but the finances might allow the Sox to addressed the multitude of other team needs. Brining in Clevinger is a move and hopefully it's not the last move.

Coaching staff decisions have yet to be announced for the 2023 Chicago White Sox Nov 23, 2022

Show notes

Coaching staff decisions have yet to be announced for the 2023 Chicago White Sox. We know that Pedro Grifol's coaching staff will look different aside from pitching coaches, Ethan Katz and Curt Hasler. We also know that former Toronto Blue Jays manager, Charlie Montoyo, will be the new bench coach but what about the rest of the staff? Question marks remain in terms of the first base and third base coaches. There was a report earlier this month claiming that KC Royals hitting coach, Matt Tosar, will be joining the White Sox in a similar role but there have been recent reports mentioning that AAA hitting coach, Chris Johnson, will be making the jump to the big leagues. Also, prepare yourself for the eventual White Sox oriented conversations that you will most likely have with family and friends this holiday season.

Could Chicago White Sox legend Mark Buehrle get a call from Cooperstown? Nov 22, 2022

Show notes

There's a case to be made for Chicago White Sox legend Mark Buehrle's enrichment into the Hall of Fame. Buehrle is on the ballot for the third time and needs some luck. Buehrle played for 16 seasons and spent his first 12 years with the White Sox. He was a five time All-Star, won four gold gloves and won a World Series with the 2005 Sox. Buehrle pitched a no-hitter and a perfect game. He was also extremely close to pitching at least 200 innings for 15 straight seasons. The White Sox retired Buehrle's number '54' in 2017 but could Cooperstown come calling one day? If the White Sox do not answer their second baseman issue internally, does it make sense to go after Jean Segura? Also, it was three years ago that Jerry Reinsdorf made sure Jose Abreu stayed in a White Sox uniform.

The Chicago White Sox non-tender Adam Engel, Danny Mendick and Mark Payton Nov 21, 2022

Show notes

The Chicago White Sox non-tender Adam Engel, Danny Mendick and Mark Payton. The White Sox 40-man roster is now at 35. The decision to non-tender Engel, Mendick and Payton was not surprising but it creates even more questions marks for the Sox. Mendick probably would have provided good competition at second base while Engel should always be considered a far better outfielder than Gavin Sheets, it's just that Engel is not a lefty bat. Could Jose Abreu land with the San Diego Padres? Sounds like there is strong interest. It's still a little surreal that Abreu might very well end his career with a different team. Also, it was three years ago when the White Sox signed Yasmani Grandal to the richest contract in team history.

Chicago White Sox pitching coach Ethan Katz wants another starter as he provided updates on the pitching staff Nov 18, 2022

Show notes

Chicago White Sox pitching coach Ethan Katz wants another starter as he provided updates on the pitching staff. Katz made it very clear that the White Sox need another starter. His comments were refreshingly direct but will the White Sox actually prioritize a starting pitcher this off-season? Katz also provided updates on Michael Kopech, Garrett Crochet, Reynaldo Lopez and weighed in on Dylan Cease's 2nd place finish in the AL Cy Young awards. Friday is an important date for MLB teams to tender contracts to arbitration eligible players. Could Adam Engel or perhaps Danny Mendick be non-tendered?

Fans wait for significant moves to be made by the Chicago White Sox while Dylan Cease will wait for his Cy Young Nov 17, 2022

Show notes

Fans wait for significant moves to be made by the Chicago White Sox while Dylan Cease will wait for his Cy Young. It was a minor move but it was still a move by the White Sox. The Sox recently acquire left-handed reliever, Nate Fisher, to help with the shaky left-handed Sox bullpen. It wasn't anything flashy but waiting for impactful moves to be made by the front office is something White Sox fans have unfortunately gotten used to. Sox starter, Dylan Cease, will have to wait his turn for the Cy Young award. Cease was runner up to Justin Verlander for the 2022 AL Cy Young. Cease had a remarkable season and finishing 2nd to Verlander should not dimmish those accomplishments. Also, 50 years ago Dick Allen had one of the greatest seasons in a White Sox uniform and won the AL MVP award.

The Chicago White Sox added infielders Bryan Ramos and Jose Rodriguez to the 40-man roster Nov 16, 2022

Show notes

The Chicago White Sox added infielders Bryan Ramos and Jose Rodriguez to the 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 deadline. Ramos is the 5th ranked prospect in the system and Rodriguez is ranked 7th. Ramos and Rodriguez provide even more depth for the White Sox, especially at second base. Rodriguez provides plenty of threat on the basepaths while Ramos might actually be best suited for a corner outfield position but of course, time will tell. The White Sox roster is now at 38 players and there are nine infielders. We won't now for a while what the actual White Sox roster will look like come spring training but if everything that has been said is true, the White Sox should be a much better prepared team under Pedro Grifol in 2023.

The Chicago White Sox are hoping to get a boost in 2023 by players returning to form Nov 15, 2022

Show notes

The Chicago White Sox are hoping to get a boost in 2023 by players returning to form. It's been no secret that the White Sox are not planning to spend a lot of money this off-season to address critical needs. The Sox are planning to explore the trade market but are also hoping key players return to their accustomed levels. A resurgence by Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal should be one of the organization's top wishes. Grandal is staying in Chicago this off-season to best prepare himself for spring training. Aside from players returning to form, what else needs to go right for the Sox to recapture the AL Central? Rule 5 and non-tender deadlines are this week. Who will the Sox protect and could the White Sox actually extend Dylan Cease before he ever hits free agency.
