There are millions of reasons why Leury Garcia will be on the 2023 Chicago White Sox team Mar 17, 2023

Show notes

There are millions of reasons why Leury Garcia will be on the 2023 Chicago White Sox team. Have you tried to predict the reserve infielder spot for the upcoming season? Hanser Alberto has had a pretty good spring and seems to have a major advocate in manager Pedro Grifol. Leury Garcia, on the other hand, has not had a very good spring but is owed millions of dollars in the upcoming season. Although Grifol would probably choose Alberto over Garcia... it's almost a foregone conclusion that Garcia will break camp with the Sox and head to Houston. The White Sox lost to the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday afternoon by a score of 5-1. Sox went with Nick Avila to start the game and his only inning of work was rough. After loading the bases, Avila gave up a grand slam to Josh Naylor. Sox offense scored an early run but did not do much after that. Andrew Benintendi had the lone RBI for the White Sox. Legendary organist, Nancy Faust, will be playing during the game on Friday as the White Sox host the Cubs at Camelback Ranch.

The Chicago White Sox bullpen has a few question marks but there's doubt about the importance Mar 16, 2023

Show notes

The Chicago White Sox bullpen has a few question marks but here's doubt about the importance. White Sox manager, Pedro Grfiol, has reiterated that the Sox will not have a 'ninth inning guy' but will approach the closer role based on matchups and scenarios. The pitch clock will definitely help pitchers to get out of their head and into a rhythm but max effort pitchers might suffer from a lack of time to recover. With limited moments between pitches and in between innings, starting pitchers will have to manage their stamina which means the bullpen will be extremely important, especially early on in the season. The Sox have a depleted group right now as they are missing Garrett Crochet and Liam Hendriks. Aaron Bummer has yet to pitch in a Cactus League game but should be ready by Opening Day. The Sox announced new concession deals for Tuesday games this season and continued construction around the ballpark produces all kinds of questions.

Mailbag Wednesday: Hoping WBC success translates to the regular season for Chicago White Sox participants Mar 15, 2023

Show notes

Mailbag Wednesday: Hoping WBC success translates to the regular season for Chicago White Sox participants. Lance Lynn and Tim Anderson had exciting performances for Team USA against Team Canada recently. Eloy Jimenez and Yoan Moncada have also faired well in the tournament. Tim Anderson looks focused and seems to be enjoying the spotlight. Can Anderson use the national attention and competitive play to his advantage during this upcoming season? Are innings logged on a big stage more desirable than innings logged in a Cactus League game? Lance Lynn has had a solid spring so far and any WBC successes should be viewed as a major positive for the upcoming White Sox season. Dylan Cease returned to the mound against the Oakland Athletics. The Sox beat the A's and Cease had a much better outing than his previous one. Also, Pedro Grifol and his coaching staff do not like wasting time and how they run their camp is all about 'quality over quantity', according to the new second baseman.

Yoán Moncada headlines a class of Chicago White Sox players that need to have a breakout season Mar 14, 2023

Show notes

Yoán Moncada headlines a class of Chicago White Sox players that need to have a breakout season. Herb Lawrence, co-host of the CHGO White Sox podcast, joins the episode to talk all things Chicago White Sox. There are so many players on the Sox roster that must have breakout years if the Sox reach their potential. Yoan Moncada has been experiencing some success with Team Cuba when it has mattered most. Could Moncada be one of the more likely candidates to live up to the hype in 2023? Is it more likely for Lucas Giolito to have a bounce back year or Dylan Cease to take a few steps back? Leury Garcia is owed a lot of money in 2023 but will he even break camp out of Arizona? There has been a lot of talk centering on culture, chemistry and togetherness. How important are those really when it comes to a big league club and is Pedro Grifol the right man to facilitate the change?

Oscar Colas added a pair of home runs to his spring resume and Michael Kopech shined in his debut for the White Sox Mar 13, 2023

Show notes

Oscar Colas added a pair of home runs to his spring resume and Michael Kopech shined in his debut for the White Sox. The Sox had a little but of everything happen this past weekend. They beat the Chicago Cubs, lost to the San Diego Padres and tied against the Los Angeles Angels. Lucas Giolito and Michael Kopech turned in very solid outings. Kopech looked in command and controlled any first game jitters he had by throwing a perfect three innings on Sunday. Jake Burger continues to try and hit his way on the ball club. He blasted two home runs this past weekend. Up until this past weekend, Oscar Colas has had an impressive spring but zero home runs. Colas changed that on Saturday when he blasted a pinch hit home run, then followed it up with another home run run on Sunday. Pedro Grifol brought in many of the coaches that round out his staff. What are the benefits to working alongside your friends?

It's just the spring and the last couple of days for the Chicago White Sox have made that apparent Mar 10, 2023

Show notes

It's just the spring and the last couple of days for the Chicago White Sox have made that apparent. There are peaks and valleys during Spring Training and the Sox didn't have much to show for their play on Wednesday and Thursday. Dylan Cease had an extremely short and frustrating outing again the Kansas City Royals. He was tagged for 11 runs in just two-thirds of an inning. Cease could not locate his breaking stuff... or really any of his stuff for that matter. Cease took his outing in stride and does not seem overly concerned. He has liked his bullpen sessions and at the end of the day, he's got his health. On Thursday, the White Sox went with what appeared to be a very secondary lineup against Team Columbia. The Sox lost by a score of 5-4. Thankfully, it's just the spring. There is more praise for Hanser Alberto, the journeyman infielder that is trying to make the team. Pedro Grifol had some very positive things to say about his game as well as his personality. Also, the White Sox release a second wave of promotional night and stadium giveaways. Dylan Cease finally gets the bobblehead treatment in August.

Opening Day is in three weeks. How are you feeling about the Chicago White Sox since Spring Training began? Mar 09, 2023

Show notes

Opening Day is in three weeks. How are you feeling about the Chicago White Sox since Spring Training began? This question was presented on social media and there were many, many responses. Most of the fan replies were of a positive nature. Lots of optimism now that Elvis Andrus is back and for the way Pedro Grifol has been running camp. Oscar Colas has also generated buzz amongst fans. There is still some negativity out there, which is understandable. At the end of the day, the same owner and front office is still in place. There were also some fans that are indifferent. Naturally, there's excitement for a new year but a 'wait and see' approach is sometimes best. All in all, fans seem to be feeling a whole lot better about the White Sox than they were before Spring Training started. Luis Robert, Jr. and Andrew Vaughn get some national attention for their potential to be breakout players in 2023. And, is Tony La Russa off the hook for what happened to the Sox last season?

Mailbag Wednesday: Pedro Grifol preaches fundamentals and the Chicago White Sox beat the Milwaukee Brewers Mar 08, 2023

Mailbag Wednesday: Pedro Grifol preaches fundamentals and the Chicago White Sox beat the Milwaukee Brewers. As White Sox spring training continues to plug along, fans hear more and more about the initiatives of first time manager Pedro Grifol. He has emphasized culture and chemistry while also focusing on fundamentals. Could Grifol be the difference maker? Will he be the reason this team is successful in 2023? It's too early to tell but fans seems to like what they have seen and heard so far. The Sox have tough decisions to make when it comes to certain roster spots, specially with regards to the utility/bench roles. Romy Gonzalez, Leury Garcia, Hanser Alberto, Gavin Sheets, Billy Hamilton and Victor Reyes are all vying for essentially three spots. Who's in and who's out? Tim Anderson talks about Jose Abreu's recent comments regarding the 2022 team. Anderson agrees with Abreu that the Sox were not a family and Anderson believes that's why it's so very important for the Sox to come together sooner rather than later.

Hanser Alberto continues to make the most out of his opportunity with the Chicago White Sox in AZ Mar 06, 2023

Show notes

Hanser Alberto continues to make the most out of his opportunity with the Chicago White Sox in AZ. Since Elvis Andrus rejoined the Sox, there are not as many position battles as fans anticipated. One particular battle is for the utility role. The White Sox have options and are of course looking for versatility with not only the bat but also the glove. Infielder, Hanser Alberto, can play multiple positions and has impressed with his bat so far in Glendale. The Sox have won two of the last three games during Cactus League play. Giolito and Cease logged some innings recently, still shaking off the rust and getting accustomed to the pitch clock. Andrew Vaughn and Yasmani Grandal have been flexing the power and Oscar Colas continues to hit. Pedro Grifol opens up about his first spring training as a big league manager. It appears as if Grifol is operating a player director, manager facilitated Sox camp. Also, MLB concludes their investigation into Mike Clevinger. According to MLB, Clevinger will not be suspended.
