Chicago White Sox baseball is back. Dylan Cease takes on Jose Abreu and the Houston Astros Mar 30, 2023

Show notes

Chicago White Sox baseball is back. Dylan Cease takes on Jose Abreu and the Houston Astros. The last game of the 2022 season for the White Sox, a 10-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins, was the final memory of a very disappointing season. The past is a place to learn from, not live in. The White Sox, under the leadership of Pedro Grifol, are ready to get back to work. The Houston Astros are the defending World Series Champions and reloaded with South Side staple, Jose Abreu. The Sox were (3-4) against the Astros last year and lost two of their three games in Houston. Dylan Cease has not fared well against Houston but nobody from Houston's lineup has really done well against Cease. Houston's left-handed starter, Framber Valdez, is a good one and has had success against the White Sox throughout his career. There are some new faces to the White Sox roster like Andrew Benintendi and Oscar Colas and some faces that we hope stay on the field all year long like, Eloy Jimenez, Luis Robert and Tim Anderson. The Sox and Astros kick things off Thursday night on ESPN.

The Chicago White Sox are not getting much respect from the baseball world but that could all change in 2023 Mar 29, 2023

Show notes

The Chicago White Sox are not getting much respect from the baseball world but that could all change in 2023. National baseball pundits and prognosticators are not picking the Sox to win the AL Central or even grab a wild card berth. Flying under the radar might be a good thing for the White Sox and playing with some urgency at the beginning of the season could change the trajectory. The Sox wrapped up Spring Training with a loss to the Chicago Cubs. Romy Gonzalez and Andrew Vaughn went deep. Michael Kopech was not terribly sharp during his final tune up but he got his work in a left the game healthy. What are the big obstacles for the White Sox to have success? Who are the difference makers and the players that the Sox can't live without? Who will be a breakout star and what Sox players will actually return to accustomed levels? The Sox kick off the season against the defending champions, the Houston Astros. Dylan Cease vs. Framber Valdez. Jose Abreu has been waiting for this series for a long time.

Final game of spring training has arrived for the Chicago White Sox as they prepare to turn their focus to Houston Mar 28, 2023

Show notes

Final game of spring training has arrived for the Chicago White Sox as they prepare to turn their focus to Houston. There were more roster decisions being made and some clarity on what the bench as well as bullpen might look like. Romy Gonzalez, despite a slow start the spring, has come on lately and is rumored to have made the ballclub. Right hand pitcher, Gregory Santos, might also make the ballclub instead of Nick Avila or Bryan Shaw. Aaron Bummer has returned to action and has looked pretty good in his brief Cactus League outings. Infielder, Hanser Alberto, should find out on Wednesday that he officially made the team but he had a scare in the 5th inning of Monday's game when he was hit by pitch in the hand and had to leave. White Sox say that he is fine. Pedro Grifol understands that there is no such thing as a perfect lineup and values versatility but he also provides some insight into the process of picking his roster. Andrew Vaughn retuned to action after a lower back issue but Yoan Moncada is still suffering from his lower back problems and is day-to-day.

It's decision time for the Chicago White Sox and if Leury Garcia is out, then will Hanser Alberto be in? Mar 27, 2023

Show notes

It's decision time for the Chicago White Sox and if Leury Garcia is out, then will Hanser Alberto be in? Reports spread quickly though social media on Sunday that Leury Garcia, the longest tenured Chicago White Sox player, will NOT be on the Opening Day roster. It's a surprise since he has money owed and time left on his contract. Infielder, Hanser Alberto, has had a very special spring and if he is awarded a roster spot, it's because he absolutely earned it. Rumored swirled that right fielder, Oscar Colas, will also make the Opening Day roster. Colas has had an impressive spring and deserves the opportunity. Sox fans also got word recently that Dylan Cease will get the start on Opening Day, a spot held by Lucas Giolito in the past. Cease had a nice tune up on Friday against Oakland and seems to be in a great place. The White Sox also announced that AJ Pierzynski will be throwing out the first pitch during the Home Opener on April 3rd. Michel Kopech will get the start for the White Sox.

It was a rough day at Camelback Ranch for Michael Kopech as the White Sox lost to the SF Giants, 6-3 Mar 24, 2023

Show notes

It was a rough day at Camelback Ranch for Michael Kopech as the White Sox lost to the SF Giants, 6-3. Michael Kopech had a lot to say about his performance and it was not a surprise that he was disappointed. Kopech struggled to find the zone in his four innings of work. He got out of a few self-made jams but also gave up a three run homerun to cap off a tough day. Sox offense did not do much to help him out. Seby Zavala and Romy Gonzalez each had a homerun. Eloy Jimenez played in his second game in a row since returned to action after the leg cramp issue earlier in the week. Jimenez said he left the game for precautionary reasons and feels very good. Jimenez, along with four other White Sox players, made ESPN's list of Top 100 MLB players. There are some clarifications to the new MLB rules and the official broadcast schedule came out which will feature the White Sox in eleven nationally televised games.

Mailbag Wednesday: The Chicago White Sox will win 90 games and win the AL Central... if healthy Mar 22, 2023

Show notes

Mailbag Wednesday: The Chicago White Sox will win 90 games and win the AL Central... if healthy. MLB.com made some AL Central predictions recently and they like the White Sox to finish in first place and win 90 games. The prediction, of course, is reliant on a healthy roster. Are the recent injuries to Yoan Moncada and Eloy Jimenez a fluke or is there serious concern? Jimenez should be back in the lineup on Wednesday and Moncada is still day-to-day but maybe, just maybe these recent injuries are just that: injuries. Perhaps there is nothing major to read into and life will go back to normal any day now. Maybe. Lucas Giolito had a solid outing against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday afternoon as he fine tunes a few things before the season starts. Sox beat the Brewers by a score of 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon. Michael Kopech gets high praise from pitching coach Ethan Katz and catcher Seby Zavala. It has not been made official but it seems like a foregone conclusion that Dylan Cease will be the Opening Day starter... and things are lining up for that to happen.

Yoán Moncada and Eloy Jiménez are day-to-day as the injury bug has made it's annual visit to the White Sox Mar 21, 2023

Show notes

Yoán Moncada and Eloy Jiménez are day-to-day as the injury bug has made it's annual visit to the White Sox. Getting out of spring training without any player ailments seems like an impossible mission. The White Sox have been fairly healthy until a few days ago. Moncada collided with a teammate during the USA/Cuba game and has a bruised rib. Then on Monday, Jimenez, left the game early due to a cramp in his right calf. Both players are day-to-day however both players have a history of spring training injuries that have forced them to miss considerable regular season games. If the Sox do not decide to use a closer by committee then Reynaldo Lopez should get serious consideration for the 9th inning role. Either way, Lopez will get plenty of action this season in high leverage situations. New kid on the block, Andrew Benintendi has had a quiet spring but manager Pedro Grifol does not focus a lot of time worrying about him. Benintendi seems to be healthy and happy where his swing is at. His defense and lefty bat should be a key contributors to the 2023 Sox season.

The Chicago White Sox ended the weekend on a high note and Oscar Colas hit his third HR of the spring Mar 20, 2023

Show notes

The Chicago White Sox ended the weekend on a high note and Oscar Colas hit his third HR of the spring. The White Sox beat the Seattle Mariners on Sunday afternoon by a score of 6-2. Dylan Cease got the start. He went four innings and only gave up one while striking out six. It was a rough first inning but he definitely got better as the game went on. Seby Zavala had a HR and a double. Michael Kopech saw action on Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was not as sharp as he was in his first outing but Kopech refused to give up an earned run in his two plus innings of work. Mike Clevinger pitched on Friday against the Cubs. He gave up a pair of home runs but seemed to be working on some specific things during the 65 pitch outing and was not fazed. Other happenings: Are the Los Angeles Dodgers trying to trade for Tim Anderson? How long will Andrew Vaughn's back keep him out of the lineup? Now that Oscar Colas as a banner hanging along 35th street, does that mean he is a lock for starting right field on Opening Day?
